[Bug 104957] Re: users with no password can't log in with gdm

2008-07-30 Thread Steve Langasek
The other way to fix this, rather than disabling nullok_secure (which
isn't a good idea as a default), would be to add your X console to
/etc/securetty. Can someone test and confirm that this works?

I'm not sure whether doing that by default would be a good idea, either,
from a security standpoint. I think we would want to be able to
distinguish local X sessions from XDMCP sessions for such a change, and
I'm not sure how that's possible. Sebastien, perhaps you have some
thoughts on this?

[Bug 114620] Re: GDM has no change password option

2008-07-30 Thread Steve Langasek
Sorry, but this is not a PAM bug. Password changing is a completely
separate application entry point from authentication, in PAM; it is the
responsibility of the calling application to handle a return of
PAM_NEW_AUTHTOK_REQD from pam_acct_mgmt(), indicating that the user must
change his password. If gdm isn't doing that, that's a gdm bug.

If gdm *is* handling PAM_NEW_AUTHTOK_REQD correctly, then the problem is
that this is never the value that's being returned, which means one of
two things: either the PAM module in use is buggy (which I don't think
is the case here because I've used pam_winbind+password expiry fine in
the past with no problems), or the Windows domain is configured to
immediately lock accounts out upon password expiry. The last case is
certainly not something that we can fix...

Separately, there seems to be a wishlist request (in the upstream bug)
to allow a user to change their password from within GDM itself even
when it's not expired. I don't know how that would work, because the
information that the password will expire /soon/ is entirely advisory
and not part of the PAM spec, so the user would never see this
information until after they'd successfully logged in. That part is
probably a general GNOME bug rather than a GDM bug, then.

I'm skeptical of the assertion that this is a bug in PAM given that

case it's fixed in more recent releases, so marking this bug as 'fix
released'. If someone is able to narrow down the source of this

[Bug 241579] Re: gvfsd-cdd prevents cd drive from opening

2008-07-30 Thread atarax
i guess you talk about a terminal command? if so it does, but it's
pretty much the same behaviour as if i open the drive manually: the tray
opens only for one second then closes again.

one exeption:

i just had one incidence where i let grip rip and encode a single track,
after that the auto eject failed to work as usual. i entered 'eject
scd0' in the command line and the tray opened for a second and closed
again. when i entered 'eject scd0' for a second time the tray opened and
remained open.

i repeated this process but not using the command line but the physical
eject button of the drive. here when first pressing the eject button the
tray opens only for a second and closes. but when i press the eject
button again, the tray remains closed until i press it for a third time.
but maybe it's only that you have to wait some time anyway for the drive
to be ready for an eject process, because it needs to be unmounted
etc. i have always been surprised, why grip always freezes completely
everytime while you mount or unmount the cd drive...

sorry no real hard evidence for bug tracking but that's all i have.
btw: did you get any similar behaviour on your machine?

[Bug 251431] Re: Evolution crashes when editing/creating calendar items.

2008-07-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 253227] [NEW] Difficult to control monitor resolutions, and bad handling of plugging and unplugging external screen

2008-07-30 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on a Toshiba Portege R500 laptop. I use my laptop
at home and at work, and have an external monitor at work (a BENQ
T241WA). I often suspend my laptop when travelling, rather than shutting
it down.

After disconnecting an external monitor and waking up from suspend, the
panel at the bottom of my desktop is not visible (presumably it is on
the missing external screen). In this case I have to go to
System-Preferences-Screen Resolution to rescan the screens and remove
the external one.

When I run Windows (this is a dual boot system) it is easy to choose
whether to use the external screen in full resolution and just disable
the laptop screen, or to use both (with different resolutions and
different content). Both of these choices are difficult in Ubuntu, where
the default behaviour seems to be to put the same content on both
screens, but if one is screen is smaller, only show what you can from
the top left corner. It doesn't seem to help to drag the screens in the
Monitor Resolution Settings window to different positions relative to
each other. Clone Screens is not set.

When waking Ubuntu from suspend, there seems to be some trouble using
the external screen. When I connect it, I get Out of range errors on
the screen. This usually works after rebooting, however.

When I have 2 screens connected at different resolutions, I seem to be
experiencing some oddity when opening new windows. Terminal, for
example, opens as a frame with transparent content, except for the line
with the prompt, which is white. Clicking anywhere in the window, using
alt-tab to switch windows, otherwise causing a refresh/redraw, makes the
window turn the expected white. New windows also open a semi-transparent
frame that is larger than the window itself, and that remains semi-
transparent on the desktop. This also disappears when I do something to
cause a refresh.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to report these problems.

In order to deal with the problems within it is much easier
to have bug reports about single issue, so I'd like to split
your report up.

Firstly, the last issue is not a problem with gnome-control-center,
it seems to either be your video driver, or the window manager. Could
you please report a bug on one of those that describes that problem?

I would like it very much if you could take the other issues
and split them out in to a bug report per problem. You can
retitle this report and modify the description for one of them.

Thanks,

James

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

with as a '.crash' file.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using

[Bug 251169] Re: evolution missing arrow tooltips in 'Contact Editor Personal Information'

2008-07-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
don't specify the version to the title, the issue is not specific to
hardy and that creates confusion and extra work, you can use the
description to list the versions you are using

** Summary changed:

- [hardy] evolution missing arrow tooltips in 'Contact Editor Personal
Information'
+ evolution missing arrow tooltips in 'Contact Editor Personal Information'

[Bug 250809] Re: Evolution doesn't starup properly after upgrade on July 18 2008

2008-07-30 Thread savvid
when I tried CLI, it's the same. It will eventually bring up the
evolution, but it didn't start at the begining.

I have to use Virtual Box with my Microsoft email for office mail.

Now, it seems Evolution recovered. Don't know why.

thanks
Peng
