[Bug 258734] [NEW] nautilus crash when unmounting an nfs disk if nfs server is down

2008-08-17 Thread Antoine Pairet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This procedure involves 2 computers:
1. NFSServer
2. NFSClient

Step to reproduce:
1. Mounting an NFS disk on NFSClient
2. Shutting down the NFSServer
3. In nautilus/on the desktop, right clicking on the NFS disk and trying to
unmount it
4. Nautilus crash

Symptons:
After the crash, nautilus process is still active, but there are no icons on
the desktop anymore, going to Places - Home just doesn't work and there's no
error message. Trying to execute nautilus trough a terminal doesn't work and
gives no error

Workaround:
If you right clicked on the icon on the desktop: Go to System - System Monitor
- Kill Nautilus
If you right clicked under nautilus: Close the window and confirm the fact that
you want to kill process

After killing nautilus, everything works fine but the NFS drive is still
mounted. Trying to access gives no result.

xterm and other terminals I've tried correctly handle the standard `ESC
[ 8' and `ESC [ 4' escape sequences to alter the size of the terminal
window.

# Sets terminal to 100x40 characters.
$ echo -n '@[8;40;100t' | tr @ \\033
# Sets terminal to 200x200 pixels.
$ echo -n '@[4;200;200t' | tr @ \\033

gnome-terminal doesn't, which is wrong. This is despite vte's vteapp.c'
resize_window() which tries to handle both escape sequences. I suspect
there's something lacking in gnome-terminal to make use of this.

Not supporting these escape sequences means gnome-terminal, the default
Ubuntu terminal, is unsuitable for some legacy console apps, and it also
means it's not possible to work around bug #217167.

[Bug 217167] gnome-terminal is Always 80x24. No global or per-profile setting available.

2008-08-17 Thread Ralph Corderoy

Hi Sam, my `global' in the bug's title means `not per-profile for a
single user', not `for all gnome-terminals across all users', so
although that solution may work for you, I have other users on this
machine so it isn't suitable. And files under /usr/share aren't
intended to be edited by a user or admin. of the machine.

I think this bug is probably really two. The lack of configurability
over the terminal size, with per-profile settings, means I can't, for
example, quickly open a new log-file monitoring terminal, or a new IRC
client one. A user can match profiles to uses rather than just
appearance, e.g. a dark blue background is log-file monitoring with a
small font size but that needs a particular terminal size too.

The second issue is gnome-terminal's lack of compliance with the `ESC [
8' and `ESC [ 4' sequences. This is a hard, concrete bug; not a
`wishlist' item. I've opened a second bug for that, bug #258775, so
this bug can concentrate on the lack of per-profile setting.

[Bug 258794] [NEW] gtkprint doesn't use the ppd default paper size

2008-08-17 Thread poiuyt
Public bug reported:

Release of Ubuntu: hardy (no proposed and no backport packages).
Version: libgtk2.0-0 - 2.12.9-3ubuntu4

When adding a printer using either the CUPS configuration interface or the
system-config-printer tool, one can choose the default paper size of the
printer, among several other options, depending on the driver.
An interesting consequence is that one can add multiple print queues with
different configuration options, and especially different paper sizes, which
can be very useful for multifunction printers (such as the Canon MPxxx series
for example). These options are stored into the PPD files located in
/etc/cups/ppd/.

For instance, a typical configuration, for a MFP, could be:
- one print queue for normal text printing (with A4 paper size, 600x600 dpi,
colors),
- one print queue for draft text printing (A4 paper, 300x300 dpi DRAFT and
grayscale),
- one print queue for photo printing (4x6 inches paper, 2400x2400 dpi, glossy
photo paper, vivid colors).

The GTKPrint dialog allows the user to set several options, but not the
paper size, which can be instead set on the Page Setup dialog, located
into the File menu (for applications implementing GTKPrint).

The problem is that the paper size selected on the Page Setup dialog always
overrides the default page size defined into the PPD file, and GTKPrint doesn't
seem to use the paper size defined into the PPD file at all.
So, considering the default paper for the system is A4 (as for every European
locales), whenever the user wants to print a photo using the associated print
queue (#3 in the examples above), he has to set the paper size on the Page
Setup dialog first.

This is counter-intuitive, since it requires the user additional steps to print
a picture, while he already defined a default paper size when installing the
printer.
A correct behavior would be for GTKPrint to use the default paper size set into
the PPD files, while the Page Setup dialog would be used to *optionaly*
override this setting.

The Page Setup dialog should also have an option to store the default
settings per application (Set as default).

Several applications are impacted by this behavior:
- evince, evolution, openoffice, eog, f-spot, etc.

Note: in hardy, f-spot doesn't even have the Page Setup dialog
available, so it's not even possible to print photos using a MFP with
a4 as the system-wide default paper size.

[Bug 208181] Re: Optional Information Needed to Connect to Samba Share

2008-08-17 Thread Pajari Räsänen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 216104 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216104

I'm afraid I rejoiced too early, i.e. the problem persists. Yesterday I
could mount the shares after checking a few boxes in Guarddog, but the
host machine (my desktop acting as a file and print server, as well as
my kids' gaming machine) was running Windows at that moment. Today I
tried mounting the shares and printing from my Ubuntu laptop while also
the desktop was running Ubuntu (installed on an external HDD partition),
but could not.

Is this bug really a duplicate of #216104? I wonder, because the error
message differs slightly (here No application is registered as handling
this file, there The specified location is not mounted). Perhaps I'm
just ignoring something (as a strictly non-technical — but well-meaning
— user).

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-08-17 Thread BlueWine
That 'fix' actually made things less usable. If I was running Flash,
Rhythmbox would finish what it was playing then stall when starting the
next song. The only solution was to close everything that was using
sounds (Firefox, Pidgin, Rhythmbox) and start it all up again.

Whatever what 'fix' did must've made Flash queue for use of the sound
card, but Flash still wasn't releasing the card afterward. Psuedo-techie
guess anyway ^_~

I have reverted, will keep updating as I progress.

I've filed a bug for a more generic version of the bug (I think :)), see

The paper size used by gtkprint should be the one set in the PPD files,
and optionaly overridden by the Page Setup dialog options.

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2008-08-17 Thread Richard
This is a real pain on larger displays (e.g. mine is 1680x1050). It's
also an accessibility issue - those with motor control problems may find
it very hard to position the mouse to drag a window even on smaller
displays such as 1280x1024 17 monitors.

Having switched from KDE, where this is a simple configuration option
and the first thing I set up, I'm really surprised that GNOME doesn't
allow this. Windows has of course allowed this for a very long time,
certainly Windows 95 if not Windows 3.1.

Installing Emerald is reasonable workaround I suppose but that's hardly
new user friendly - it would be much better if this was configurable.
Having to search for a theme with wider borders is a pain, you might
well end up with a theme you don't like for aesthetic reasons. As
someone said, it's the small things that put you off when you are trying
out Ubuntu for the first time. (I've used Ubuntu for a few years and
Linux for ages but am setting up Ubuntu for an elderly relative who has
some trouble with precise mouse movements.)

RE: [Bug 257715] Re: Gnome appearance properties is started but does not show

2008-08-17 Thread ledenjes
You're welcome.

I think it is not reproducable, since I no longer have encountered this problem.
When it happened, the gdm had started twice, which caused it all.

However, since then, the gdm does not start at boot, at all, anymore.

Regards.

[Bug 258876] [NEW] Evolution Alarm Notification Disappears WAY WAY too soon!

2008-08-17 Thread l33ting disorder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Hi,

My problem is specific to the evolution alarm notification.

When I set a calendar appointment in Evolution with an alarm, all I get
for notification is a 5-second notification bubble and a tiny icon in my
system tray.

The tiny icon in my system tray is useless, as I keep my gnome-panels on
auto-hide (as do many other people) making the system tray hidden.

EVERY SINGLE calendar application I've ever used (on Windows AND on Mac)
require the user to dismiss the notification bubble/pop-up before it
goes away. The evolution notification pop-up always disappears after
ONLY FIVE SECONDS, making it virtually useless unless I spend every
waking minute in front of my screen so I can catch those 5-second
windows of opportunity.

I'm assuming this is a bug or a shortcoming in the Evolution code, since
(as mentioned) EVERY SINGLE other calendar app for EVERY MAJOR OS
requires the user to give the notification window permission to
disappear. I can't imagine the Evolution developers would have made the
conscious decision to build the code with such a shortcoming, so it must
be a bug... Either a bug in the program or a bug in the development
process ;)

In any case, I'd like to extend the life of the notification pop-ups so
that the Evolution calendar goes from useless to incredibly useful
but I've tried looking everywhere and can't seem to make Evolution work
properly.

I've looked through all of the Evolution preferences and plugin options.

I've looked through every option in gconf-editor - apps - evolution

I've basically come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to edit the
source code and recompile with custom source in order to achieve this
BASIC function. (The problem there is that every time there's an
evolution update, I'll have to re-edit and re-compile the source... But
I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now I just want to get it
working properly!)

I've looked through the source code to try to find a constant or
variable with a name like $notification_popup_timeout or
$notification_bubble_expiry or anything along those lines but after
combing through every line of the source code I still haven't found what
I'm looking for.

Can any Evolution dev's tell me where exactly I need to look in the
source-code in order to change the constant/variable and make the
notification popups stay on screen for, say, 5 seconds
instead of just a measly 5 seconds?

Or, even more ideally, here's a workaround I'd like to try:

Evolution puts a tiny little icon in my hidden system tray. When I click
that icon, it brings up a PROPER alert notification dialog (ie, it has a
snooze function and it doesn't disappear unless I TELL IT to do so!)

Can anyone explain how to make Evolution skip the tray-icon stage and
just assume that I would have clicked on the tray icon immediately, thus
presenting the proper (snooze-able) notification dialog right off the
bat?

Perhaps a 3rd-party app that monitors the system tray for a specified
icon and then sends that icon a click command as soon as it notices
its presence?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Evolution is an AWESOME
calendar application - WAY better than EVERY SINGLE calendar I've found
on EVERY MAJOR OS - the only thing that makes it UTTERLY USELESS to me
is the fact that the notification bubbles seem to give themselves
permission to disappear instead of waiting for my confirmation.

PS - I'm not sure whose idea it was to give the notification bubbles
their own autonomy but we've all seen Tron so we all know the trouble
that can come when programs are given permission to make their own
decisions!!! ;)

Re: [Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2008-08-17 Thread Vikram
Hello,
I am having a little difficulty understanding your problem, but what I get to
know from your email is  that you are having problems setting up a new monitor
and some other little resizing problems.  You should check your graphic card
and you might have to get a good graphic card to a higher resolution like the
one you are using.  Try ATI 4850 and also check that someone has not messed up
the display settings that are on your monitor buttons, that might help you
getting the borders you want.
Sorry I wasn't able to help much,
Vikram

Subject: [Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The preferences, contacts and personal information are all too big for a

[Bug 191316] Re: Fspot reports error for importing Nikon D80

2008-08-17 Thread Broomer68
I upgraded to Intrepid yesterday, and it is still not working right,
although the symptoms are slightly different.

as I connect there start 2 programs, the first is f-spot (0.4.4), which
report as above mentioned, only instead of the unspecified error, I get
an error like screenshot 3.

The second is a window from Nikon corp (nautilus?) where i can choose
wheter or not to start fspot. (see screenshot-4)

When using the unmount-button in the nikon-window, I can use F-spot to
import allright.

[Bug 258660] Re: Evolution crashes when I open an html mail from imap

2008-08-17 Thread Lani
Thank you for responding so soon.

I have tried to install the packages that you listed, but I had some
problems.

These packages installed fine:
evolution-data-server-dbgsym
evolution-dbgsym
libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym

But I could not install libcamel1.2-13-dbgsym. It is not listed in the
repositories that I use and the version of libcamel that I have
installed is libcamel1.2-11 and I successfully installed
libcamel1.2-11-dbgsym.

The libglib2.0-0-dbgsym package could not be installed either, It gave the
following error message:
Depends: libglib2.0-0 (=2.16.4-0ubuntu3) but 2.16.4-0ubuntu2 is to be
installed

Maybe these dependencies problems is the source of my problem?

I have attached new log files. Just let me know if you need me to take
additional steps and produce new log files. I have also attached my
sources.list file, in case I have made some mistake there while adding
the debug repositories?

Thank you for your support in this.

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2008-08-17 Thread Thomas Thurman
Vikram:

I don't think he has a problem with the resolution. I think he wants
that resolution, but with thicker borders on all themes for the sake of
accessibility, which is a perfectly reasonable request.

I am bouncing ideas around in my head about how to fix this one.

[Bug 231988] Re: Files with extended (spanish) characters in the name

2008-08-17 Thread Alejandro Hernandez
I think is not a problem of file-roller, but of winrar port for linux.
I had the same problem, so i tried then to extract the files with the console
client, i saw there was problems even in listing the files with winrar.
Later i tried the p7zip-rar, wich seems to work fine, a possible solution may
be changing the backend of fileroller, making it p7zip-rar instead of winrar
port. It can be optional to. why not?. By the way, is there a way without
re-compiling of doing so?, i mean to change the backend in my computer at least.

Thanks, and have a nice day.

[Bug 258900] [NEW] Sharing dialog misleading label

2008-08-17 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is in hardy.

In order to share a folder so that *I* can write to it from another
machine, it appears I have to click Allow other people to write in this
folder. If that's the case, the label is misleading; it should say
something like Allow remote machines to write in this folder.
Otherwise, if there I alone am supposed to have remote write permission
without checking that box, I'd like to know how, because it's not
working for me accessing the share from windows or macos guests. Yes, I
have the same password on the remote machines as on the server.
