[Bug 260805] [NEW] Nautilus hangs when copying to external HDD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I have an 1TB external HDD (ext3) which is hooked up to my computer using firewire. When i create a new folder in the drive, there is a significant delay, and the first time i tried it it froze. I am trying to copy files onto it and as soon as i told it to merge two folders, it froze. When it freezes it will simply hang and i can't kill the process. I have to restart my computer. [Bug 260800] [NEW] Totem only plays first track of audio cd
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem CD playing in Totem sure is crippled.. First, the autoplay bug, then the need for a codec not remotely saying anything about audio cd's (musepack etc just because one happens to depend on libcdaudio). The "Play audio cd" option is always greyed out. So the user needs to find out the way to playing a cd is via an url of cdda:// - not exactly user-friendly. Now the bug. [Bug 210313] Re: Evince sticks at "Loading..." on start when compiz enabled
This only happens with compiz, so it is assumed to be a compiz issue. Closing for evince. I still have not seen this on Intrepid, so I'm pretty sure this has been fixed in compiz 0.7.7. [Bug 230879] Re: Will not subscribe to podcast address when I add it. It just ignores the input and lists zero podcasts.
same here. no error message, .. the podcast just doesn't show up in my list. I successfully added a few podcast, (chinesepod.com/feed and spanishpod.com/feed). but more recently http://feeds.feedburner.com/German-podcast and http://www.arabicpod.net/feed/lessons just don't show up when I add them. No error messages or anything like that, ... they just don't show up. Also, maybe this is a separate bug. .. but is inline with the same general issue of lack of error handling: I tried multiple times under the config menu to change the directory to which podcasts are downloaded. Every time, if I closed the app and re- opened, it was set back to my home directory. I tried adding a couple of other podcasts (which successfully showed up in the list of podcasts) but which failed to downloaded the actual mp3 files. There were no informative error messages, it just said "failed". I changed the download directory to ~/Podcasts/, and now those podcasts that were failing to download files are downloading properly. I don't want these in my home directory (it's in a partition that I don't want to use for file storage)... and I don't want to have to copy them all manually. The partition where I am trying to store the files is a fat32 partition. I do have write permission on that directory, ... but it's possible that rhythmbox is trying to do something like change timestamps or permissions or something in a way that can't be done, and then just failing ungracefully when it doesn't work. Whatever the problem is, the interface should at a minimum give some kind of feedback about why the podcast didn't download, or didn't add, etc. -- Will not subscribe to podcast address when I add it. [Bug 260785] [NEW] "clear the list of locations" message
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Sorry if I'm doing this in the wrong place; I'm not sure where this should be done. In a Nautilus window, click Go and Clear History. This message is shown: - Are you sure you want to clear the list of locations you have visited? - If you clear the list of locations, they will be permanently deleted. That's scary! It's just a list of locations, but the bad wording makes it sound like the locations themselves will be permanently deleted. Why not simplify this to a single sentence saying: - Are you sure you want to permanently clear the list of locations you have visited? Or even leave out the "permanently". [Bug 146946] Re: Gnome settings daemon randomly does not work
I'm having precisely the same problem as BruceBeare, and almost exactly the same backtrace. :) I downloaded the debug symbols, and this is what I got: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. [Switching to Thread 0x7f1966f937a0 (LWP 19394)] set_touchpad_enabled (state=) at gsd-mouse-manager.c:420 420 gsd-mouse-manager.c: No such file or directory. in gsd-mouse-manager.c (gdb) bt #0 set_touchpad_enabled (state=) at gsd-mouse-manager.c:420 #1 0x7f195a26a8cd in gsd_mouse_manager_start (manager=0x660af0, error=) at gsd-mouse-manager.c:836 #2 0x7f195a2697f7 in impl_activate (plugin=0x660ac0) at gsd-mouse-plugin.c:78 #3 0x00404f0c in gnome_settings_plugin_info_activate () #4 0x00403c85 in ?? However, the set_touchpad_enabled() function in plugins/mouse/gsd-mouse-manager.c (which was introduced by debian/patches/08_extra_touchpad_options.patch) uses XListInputDevices() to get a list anyway: static int set_touchpad_enabled (gboolean state) { int numdevices, i; int values[2]; XDeviceInfo *devicelist = XListInputDevices (GDK_DISPLAY(), &numdevices); [...] for (i = 0; i < numdevices; i++) { if (strcmp (devicelist[i].name, "Synaptics Touchpad") == 0) { The problem, as you can see in the gdb conversation above, is that if devicelist is NULL, numdevices is *not* set to zero by the call to XListInputDevices. Later on, the for loop will segfault in the first strcmp() call. I've attached a patch which fixes at least this particular problem. ** Attachment added: "Fix segfault in plugins/mouse/gsd-mouse-manager.c:set_touchpad_enabled()" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17041472/09_extra_touchpad_options_fix.patch -- Gnome settings daemon randomly does not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 22119] Re: [network-admin] Dial out does not work
I have had this problem with Ubuntu 8.04, and later 8.04.1, even with all the latest updates. I use a dial up modem and phone line to access the internet. After installing Ubuntu, I can go to System - Administration - Network, put in the correct information, and access the internet. If the computer is left on after disconnecting from the internet, I can connect again, as many times as I like. However, if the computer is turned off, then restarted, and an attempt is made to connect to the internet, the modem beeps as if it is beginning to dial the number then stops, and does not connect to the internet. I have found, if I untick the box, enable this connection, which deletes all of the information, reboot the computer, enter all of the information in again, it works. I have overcome this by installing KPPP, which I use to successfully access the internet. I am using a 667 mHz computer with 512 mb of RAM, with a Banksia Wave sp 336 external modem. There is a possibility it may work OK on faster computers. However, most people now use broadband. [Bug 256586] Re: does not start in intrepid
I think there's more than one issue here. The ConsoleKit interaction problem is an error in the default /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ConsoleKit.conf since ConsoleKit 0.2.10 (see http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=ConsoleKit.git;a=commitdiff;h=f0fb2d1cfd0f0ea3ad922175e895a9e751498a03 for fix). However I find that fixing the config file and reloading dbus config still doesn't make the screensaver start. It seems to be starting, then instantly getting some sort of event and halting. This is confirmed when I manually lock the screen: the screen blanks but the password entry dialog box comes up instantly, as if the mouse was moved, and only clicking "cancel" makes the screensaver actually start. So I think there's a small bug in ConsoleKit (config file problem) and a larger bug in gnome-screensaver (instantly stopping) but this could also be a hardware problem or something else entirely. -- does not start in intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256586 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher
It is quite possibly an infelicity in the way Metacity and Emacs interact. There are not a few of these. GTK-Emacs is not your ordinary GTK application, since it has the Emacs event loop and GTK's event loop and possibly a few other things running at once. I don't know whether it happens in other window managers, and if anyone feels like checking they should go ahead, but anyone who can reproduce the bug in Metacity should turn on logging as described at http://blogs.gnome.org/metacity/2008/03/07/logging/ , reproduce the bug, restart Metacity, and then attach the log here (or mail it to me or someone else who knows Metacity's guts) for analysis. -- desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: f-spot I am using f-spot 0.4.3.1 on ubuntu 8.04. I have a bunch of tif images from a photo cd that I am trying to import. Document viewer also has trouble with these files, but gthumb can open them just fine. [Bug 260671] Re: evolution crasches when enabling html mail when a new mail windows is open
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. Workaround: It appears that you need to run one instance of a panel for each screen. This rules out: gnome-panel kicker (KDE's panel) xfce4-panel As none of them allow multiple instances. However fbpanel appears to allow this, i have a notification area on each screen using fbpanel.
