[Bug 260805] [NEW] Nautilus hangs when copying to external HDD

2008-08-23 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have an 1TB external HDD (ext3) which is hooked up to my computer
using firewire. When i create a new folder in the drive, there is a
significant delay, and the first time i tried it it froze. I am trying
to copy files onto it and as soon as i told it to merge two folders, it
froze. When it freezes it will simply hang and i can't kill the process.
I have to restart my computer. When i copied files onto it using USB
from my other computer, i had no trouble.

[Bug 260800] [NEW] Totem only plays first track of audio cd

2008-08-23 Thread Curaga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

CD playing in Totem sure is crippled..
First, the autoplay bug, then the need for a codec not remotely saying anything
about audio cd's (musepack etc just because one happens to depend on
libcdaudio). The "Play audio cd" option is always greyed out.
So the user needs to find out the way to playing a cd is via an url of cdda://
- not exactly user-friendly.

Now the bug. Totem only plays the first track of the cd. No crash, no errors,
just one track.
The same CD plays fully on Mplayer and all stand-alone players I have.

[Bug 210313] Re: Evince sticks at "Loading..." on start when compiz enabled

2008-08-23 Thread Hew McLachlan
This only happens with compiz, so it is assumed to be a compiz issue.
Closing for evince.

I still have not seen this on Intrepid, so I'm pretty sure this has been
fixed in compiz 0.7.7. I am therefore closing this issue against compiz
(it does not qualify for Hardy SRU). Please reopen against compiz if you
experience the problem on Intrepid.

[Bug 230879] Re: Will not subscribe to podcast address when I add it. It just ignores the input and lists zero podcasts.

2008-08-23 Thread nairbv

same here. no error message, .. the podcast just doesn't show up in my list.

I successfully added a few podcast, (chinesepod.com/feed and
spanishpod.com/feed).

but more recently http://feeds.feedburner.com/German-podcast and
http://www.arabicpod.net/feed/lessons just don't show up when I add
them. No error messages or anything like that, ... they just don't show
up.

Also, maybe this is a separate bug. .. but is inline with the same
general issue of lack of error handling:

I tried multiple times under the config menu to change the directory to
which podcasts are downloaded. Every time, if I closed the app and re-
opened, it was set back to my home directory.

I tried adding a couple of other podcasts (which successfully showed up
in the list of podcasts) but which failed to downloaded the actual mp3
files. There were no informative error messages, it just said "failed".

I changed the download directory to ~/Podcasts/, and now those podcasts
that were failing to download files are downloading properly.

I don't want these in my home directory (it's in a partition that I
don't want to use for file storage)... and I don't want to have to copy
them all manually.

The partition where I am trying to store the files is a fat32 partition.
I do have write permission on that directory, ... but it's possible that
rhythmbox is trying to do something like change timestamps or
permissions or something in a way that can't be done, and then just
failing ungracefully when it doesn't work.

Whatever the problem is, the interface should at a minimum give some
kind of feedback about why the podcast didn't download, or didn't add,
etc.

[Bug 260785] [NEW] "clear the list of locations" message

2008-08-23 Thread Silvio Ricardo Cordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Sorry if I'm doing this in the wrong place;
I'm not sure where this should be done.

In a Nautilus window, click Go and Clear History.
This message is shown:

- Are you sure you want to clear the list of locations you have visited?
- If you clear the list of locations, they will be permanently deleted.

That's scary! It's just a list of locations, but the bad wording
makes it sound like the locations themselves will be
permanently deleted. Why not simplify this to a single
sentence saying:

- Are you sure you want to permanently clear the list of locations you
have visited?

Or even leave out the "permanently".
Hell, it's obvious that if you clear a history, it will be lost.

Nice work. Using #ifdefs like the upstream code may be a good idea, but
you seem to have found the cause of your issue.

The bug report is about a different issue though it seems, but that doesn't
mean we can't fix yours.

Thanks,

[Bug 146946] Re: Gnome settings daemon randomly does not work

2008-08-23 Thread Dimitry Andric
I'm having precisely the same problem as BruceBeare, and almost exactly
the same backtrace. :)

I downloaded the debug symbols, and this is what I got:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

#7 0x00403ad8 in main ()
(gdb) print devicelist
$1 = (XDeviceInfo *) 0x0
(gdb) print numdevices
$2 = 32537

In my case, I'm running a GNOME session under VNC server, which does NOT
support the XInputExtension. However, the set_touchpad_enabled()
function in plugins/mouse/gsd-mouse-manager.c (which was introduced by
debian/patches/08_extra_touchpad_options.patch) uses XListInputDevices()
to get a list anyway:

static int
set_touchpad_enabled (gboolean state)
{
int numdevices, i;
int values[2];
XDeviceInfo *devicelist = XListInputDevices (GDK_DISPLAY(),
&numdevices);
[...]
for (i = 0; i < numdevices; i++) {
if (strcmp (devicelist[i].name, "Synaptics Touchpad") == 0) {

The problem, as you can see in the gdb conversation above, is that if
devicelist is NULL, numdevices is *not* set to zero by the call to
XListInputDevices. Later on, the for loop will segfault in the first
strcmp() call.

I've attached a patch which fixes at least this particular problem.

[Bug 22119] Re: [network-admin] Dial out does not work

2008-08-23 Thread Guy S
I have had this problem with Ubuntu 8.04, and later 8.04.1, even with all the
latest updates. I use a dial up modem and phone line to access the internet.
After installing Ubuntu, I can go to System - Administration - Network, put in
the correct information, and access the internet. If the computer is left on
after disconnecting from the internet, I can connect again, as many times as I
like. However, if the computer is turned off, then restarted, and an attempt is
made to connect to the internet, the modem beeps as if it is beginning to dial
the number then stops, and does not connect to the internet. I have found, if I
untick the box, enable this connection, which deletes all of the information,
reboot the computer, enter all of the information in again, it works.
I have overcome this by installing KPPP, which I use to successfully access the
internet.
I am using a 667 mHz computer with 512 mb of RAM, with a Banksia Wave sp 336
external modem. There is a possibility it may work OK on faster computers.
However, most people now use broadband. People using dial up modems may have
given up if they had this problem and changed to other operating systems.

[Bug 256586] Re: does not start in intrepid

2008-08-23 Thread Ben Aisen
I think there's more than one issue here.

The ConsoleKit interaction problem is an error in the default
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/ConsoleKit.conf since ConsoleKit 0.2.10 (see
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=ConsoleKit.git;a=commitdiff;h=f0fb2d1cfd0f0ea3ad922175e895a9e751498a03
for fix).

However I find that fixing the config file and reloading dbus config
still doesn't make the screensaver start. It seems to be starting, then
instantly getting some sort of event and halting. This is confirmed
when I manually lock the screen: the screen blanks but the password
entry dialog box comes up instantly, as if the mouse was moved, and only
clicking "cancel" makes the screensaver actually start.

So I think there's a small bug in ConsoleKit (config file problem) and a
larger bug in gnome-screensaver (instantly stopping) but this could also
be a hardware problem or something else entirely.

[Bug 260753] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties space backgrounds not available

2008-08-23 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

2) The version of the package you are using:
Installed: 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4.1

3)What you expected to happen
Expect all images from /usr/share/backgrounds to be available as
possible background options in gnome-appearance-properties.

4) What happened instead
space*.jpg images are not available to be set as backgrounds.

Also placing images in that directory does make them appear for
selection either.

Use case:
Peter runs a small company. He has 3 corporate wallpapers. He wants
to put them in a global folder so that employees can choose one they prefer.

[Bug 254016] Re: File timestamp lost when copying files (nautilus) to a NTFS volume

2008-08-23 Thread Crossland
I had overlooked this.

I'm curious, as I installed standard 8.04 (although it was an update to

On the other hand, I got 3 machines with Ubuntu, and maybe I'm just
confused.

It is working.

Thnx.

Not a good summary, right? I'd agree, but after reading the bug report you may
know why I'm reporting it that way. These are the things that don't work on
f-spot on my wife's computer.
- Closing, just open the program and try to close it. It won't, it freezes, you
have to kill it.
- Try to open the preferences dialog, freezes, have to kill it.

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher

2008-08-23 Thread Thomas Thurman
It is quite possibly an infelicity in the way Metacity and Emacs
interact. There are not a few of these. GTK-Emacs is not your ordinary
GTK application, since it has the Emacs event loop and GTK's event loop
and possibly a few other things running at once.

I don't know whether it happens in other window managers, and if anyone
feels like checking they should go ahead, but anyone who can reproduce
the bug in Metacity should turn on logging as described at
http://blogs.gnome.org/metacity/2008/03/07/logging/ , reproduce the bug,
restart Metacity, and then attach the log here (or mail it to me or
someone else who knows Metacity's guts) for analysis.

[Bug 260706] [NEW] some tif images fail to import ("object reference not set to an instance of an object")

2008-08-23 Thread Pam Griffith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

I am using f-spot 0.4.3.1 on ubuntu 8.04. I have a bunch of tif images
from a photo cd that I am trying to import. The jpg versions import
just fine, but the tif versions give me the import error, "object
reference not set to an instance of an object." If I select "skip" the
program continues happily importing more jpgs, but it will give me that
error for every one of the tif files.

Document viewer also has trouble with these files, but gthumb can open
them just fine. I opened one of them in Gimp and re-saved as another
tif file and that can be imported just fine, so it's something about the
specific encoding that's not being supported, I think. I will attach
both files.

[Bug 260671] Re: evolution crasches when enabling html mail when a new mail windows is open

2008-08-23 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 23332] Re: impossible to create openoffice files in nautilus

2008-08-23 Thread Chris Cheney
Just read some of the old comments in this thread. Yes, copying files
into the users home directory probably should not be done. Perhaps
extending Nautilus to read something like /usr/share/templates and then
manage that directory closely so it doesn't become a mess for the
average install of Ubuntu is something that would be useful?

[Bug 23332] Re: impossible to create openoffice files in nautilus

2008-08-23 Thread Chris Cheney
Reassigned to nautilus to have someone on the desktop team more familiar
with this topic to determine what should be done. Since no programs seem
to setup templates for use properly perhaps there is a reason this has
been done this way?

It is not possible to create openoffice documents from nautilus by right
clicking and selecting "Create Document". In my case it says "no templates
installed". This is something that even Windows does quite well so I really
think such functionality should be built into Breezy if at all possible. Please
reassign if I haven't got the package right.

Doesn't fix it for me. I wonder how many other directories with stale
stuff are still an issue -- people have suggested beagle, nfs, but
ultimately socket reads and network filesystem reads can take a long
time to time out, but it should not hang an application that is not
reading/writing form/to them. So it's a bug in gtk. KDE applications
do not have this problem.

[Bug 256378] Re: [radeon] Desktop Not Present on Reboot

2008-08-23 Thread Andreas Moog
Reassigning to gnome-desktop as i think its not an xorg issue.

** Summary changed:

- Desktop Not Present on Reboot
+ [radeon] Desktop Not Present on Reboot

** Description changed:

This just started recently, and i have not made any system changes.

When i restart my system, everything comes up except my desktop. I don't
mean my image, as that is there, but no icons are shown and i can not
click the desktop to deselect everything. I didn't know how to summarize
that, but that is what it means.

The fix to this is relatively easy, but it should not be necessary. To
fix this i just: Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X-Server or what ever
that is, and then it works fine. Thanks

PS: This is every reboot, not just every or something.
+
+ From .xsession-errors:

assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

[Bug 128735] Re: Notification Area on second screen's panel doesn't work

2008-08-23 Thread CShadowRun
Workaround:
It appears that you need to run one instance of a panel for each screen. This
rules out:
gnome-panel
kicker (KDE's panel)
xfce4-panel

As none of them allow multiple instances.
However fbpanel appears to allow this, i have a notification area on each
screen using fbpanel. I also had a notification area on each screen by running
gnome-panel and kicker :p

So this is definatly a bug in the panels, they are all affected. Looks
like a --only-current-screen switch is desperately needed (just like in
compiz fusion)

[Bug 234961] Re: battery monitor not working

2008-08-23 Thread gary kuehn
Yes, this is still any issue. The monitor from power up is non-
functional. If I force a suspend, upon return the monitor displays
values. I have not tested if the values properly reflect reality.

To replicate the monitor failure re-boot or cold start the system while
on battery power. My notification preference is set to: "only display an
icon when charging or discharging". Upon startup the battery monitor
indicates a completely discharged cell. (Laptop battery discharging 0%)

Please find attached a tar file containing the resultant log files
requested.

Kind Regards
Gary
