I've 8.04.1 AMD64 installed and this has not been fixed yet.

Should't it be marked as "Confirmed"?

Re: [Bug 264800] Re: wallpaper dissapeared, not being applied

2008-09-04 Thread gobble
Pedro
It worked for another user. After a reboot, everything looks fine. I
did not mention that all my desktop icons lso went missing and the
right-click on desktop was not working or showing a menu.

I guess meta-gnome is the natural choice for anything broken with
gnome, when you don't know which package is the problem.
sorry about that.

The reason I opened a bug report and not mailed the forum was because
I want to emphasize that such things should never happen *especially
when a user has not tinkered with any settings*. Imagine this for a
corporate desktop when you login to do some critical urgent work and
all your icons and desktop links dissappear. The Issue is not about
if there was a workaround that resolves the matter by asking a few
questions on the forum (that may involve hours to research for an
unfamiliar user, or being forced to reboot) . A user should never have
to encounter such a basic problem. I think most people will
appreciate it if no matter what is broken, the desktop and basic
functions always work.

I run Ubuntu 8.0.4 Gnome 2.22.3.
Thanks for your time, and I hope something can be done about this.

PS: What is the correct package for this? I mean which of the 100+
packages do I start researching to locate where the fault lies? (mind
you I was a www.linuxfromscratch.org user in 2003-2005 and I am not
averse to it :) ). And honestly do you think a windows user migrating
to Linux will research this? ( wink ;) [ all in good humor] )

Cheers

[Bug 209520] Re: SMB error: Unable to mount location when server configured with security=share

2008-09-04 Thread gregphil
I also experience the ubuntu 8.04.1 inability to display shares from WindowsXp
boxes , but it displays shares from CentOS 5.2 boxes just fine. On a parallel
install (on another disk) of kubuntu 8.04.1 with Samba and all the other
setting as identical as I can make them, the GUI browsing works in the KDU app
Konquorer. HOWEVER to make this work I had to fix the /etc/hosts files. The
"new format" DOES NOT WORK, even with smbtree or smbclient. It is necessary to
add the NetBios name aliases to the 127.0.0.1 line, the entry on the 127.0.1.1
line is not seen or not understood. For example I use
127.0.0.1 localhost LIVING-ROOM LIVING-ROOM.MYGROUP
127.0.1.1 LIVING-ROOM.MYGROUP

Back in the ubuntu 8.04.1 install, the GUI browsing fails, but smbclient
or smbtree can report all the shares. I am using the default encrypted
passwords and security = user. The gnome nautilus network file browser
(ver 2.22.3) will show the computers with shares on the network, but
clicking on a Windows machine icon does NOT show the shares. If I
switch the nautilus "Location" dialog to text, and append a valid share
name to the computer name, such as smb://laptop/C, then a full
successful mount is made and I can see and use the shared files. Once
mounted, if I unmount and try again to click on a Windows machine icon
it still fails to mount.

I think I have tried every possible combination of smb.conf auth entries
(ntlmv2 auth = etc). It is really broken. Please fix

[Bug 264927] [NEW] some MP3's get "internal gstreamer problem; file a bug"

2008-09-04 Thread Zac Witte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Suddenly, perhaps when I upgraded to hardy, about 1/2 my music
collection started producing errors in Rhythmbox:

Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug

so filing a bug is what I'm doing. It doesn't seem to give me an option
to get more info, though. I ran rhythmbox -d from the console and
streamed the output to a file, which I've attached. The problem files
always seem to be the same one and naturally I get the same problem in
any GStreamer app. They work fine in VLC though.

[Bug 158840] Re: Totem starts maximized and without window borders

2008-09-04 Thread Dommo
the system is up to date. i've gotten this error for months now.

This is a bug that happens sporadically. it seems to be caused by compiz. the
temporary way to fix it is to turn off compiz, then turn it back on if you want
to keep on using compiz.

when you open a video or audio file, totem runs with the following
argument:totem %U

The work around I've found is to run totem in the terminal as just
totem

when i get the error, i run totem %U in terminal and i get the following output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ totem %U
** Message: Error: Resource not found.
gstfilesrc.c(977): gst_file_src_start (): /play/source:

Just did a clean install of Heron on my HP Pavilion a620n and i'm
getting

cooling device [1f18] 'on'

every 6 sec in my kern.log, messages, and syslog sections of the system
log viewer. Yes, all the fans are on and working just fine. I did a
clean install because i was originally getting this in Heron so i
upgraded to Ibex and was still getting the same ACPI fan message (diff
address).

I went ahead and attached a txt file of the messages log from the first
boot after the clean install. I've run the updates since then and still
getting same message spam.

I'm going to upgrade to Ibex (again) and see if the problem persists.

[Bug 211004] Re: [hardy] seahorse-agent should only be started in GNOME session

2008-09-04 Thread Kevin Wallace
The bug still exists in Hardy, but the seahorse-agent is no longer used
in Intrepid (its functionality was integrated into gnome-keyring[1]).
Thus, this bug is invalid as of Intrepid (Gnome 2.22).

[Bug 198531] Re: Connecting to SSH or Samba server gives "The specified location is not mounted" error

2008-09-04 Thread finkey
In current updated Ubuntu Hardy,

On connect to Windows Shares Server, an error box pops up that says
"Can't display location...The specified location is not mounted." But
whoops, there it was, right on the desktop, no problem showing the
shares. Lucky, my settings are to show mounted deviices. Otherwise,
I'd believe the message.

Thank goodness for Connect to Server. The Network icon in Places can't
detect the Windows Share Server at all! But it does detect my Ubuntu PC
in a separate "WORKGROUP". Using Configuration Editor to change the
value of /System/smb to the same name as Windows Workgroup in order to
join it, didn't change a thing.

For now I have bookmarked the location, and rely on that to get over to the
Windows Share Server.
Thanks for your kind attention. If you know where to find the fix mentioned
above, please point me to it.

OK. The problem is, how do you change the video driver Totem uses? The
preferences available in the GUI are quite minimalistic and I couldn't
find any information on this.

And if it is a video driver bug rather than a player bug, can somebody
reassign the bug to the relevant package?

[Bug 264836] [NEW] nautilus svg preview fonts incorrect.

2008-09-04 Thread lummie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Release Ubuntu 8.04.1

I recently created an SVG in inkscape. As part of the SVG, I used a true
type fonts that I had downloaded and installed into my ~/.fonts folder.
Inkscape correctly picks up the font and renders the text, as does Eye
of Gnome.

When the SVG preview is shown in nautilis, the font displayed in the
preview is incorrect.

I have tried moving the fonts to /usr/share/fonts/truetype but the
preview is still incorrect. (see attached screen shot).

** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #543905

** Also affects: evince via
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=543905
   Importance: Unknown
   Status: Unknown

** Summary changed:

- evince should Suggests tetex-bin for dvi
+ evince reports "incorrect format" for DVI files when no TeX distribution is
installed.

** Description changed:

- When I open a folder in nautilus contening a .dvi file, evince-
- thumbnailler start to make a thumbnail of it and show it in nautilus.
+ When opening a DVI file with evince, if no TeX distribution is
+ available, the error claims that the DVI file is at fault, rather than
+ the installation.

- At that moment, the CPU usage goes up to 100% and all the other programs
- I want to run are really really slow. When I stop evince-thumbnailler,
- every things go back to a normal state.
+ "Unable to open document", and below that, "DVI document has incorrect
+ format". The DVI document, however, may be perfectly fine; the issue is
+ that evince doesn't have DVI support installed. The error behavior
+ should be changed to make this clear.

[Bug 264834] [NEW] RFE: Add gesture to start onboard and mousetweaks at login (patch supplied)

2008-09-04 Thread Francesco Fumanti
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu supplies onboard as onscreen keyboard. However there is no
gesture defined in AccessDwellMouseEvents to start it during the login.
The same is also true for mousetweaks.

So I created a patch to add the definitions to start onboard and
mousetweaks to gdm-2.20.8/gui/modules/AccessDwellMouseEvents of the
source package.

As I have only very little experience with patching, I will also add the
original and the modified file to this thread.

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl

2008-09-04 Thread Alex Demko
Bryce, thanks for the update.

I'm glad that some fixes are being deployed in Intrepid, but I just wish
some of them would be backported to this LTS release. There doesn't seem
to be to much confidence about these Java fixes, never mind not even
knowing (ETA) about when the real fixes could be applied. As it stands
now, I can't deploy hardy with confidence, and have to wait to Intrepid
and then follow the non-LTS releases.

Older, proprietary apps *do* break, this is fact. Hardy is still
relatively young, and most people don't care/can't be bothered to file
bugs, so they won't show up here. I have an install of IDL and UT2004
that do not work under hardy, but fine under previous versions.

I love Ubuntu for its polish and fixing all the corner cases in typical
user experiences. I hope Canonical doesn't feel they have to re-
architect core systems (libx11, pulse audio) just to stay "hip and
modern." "Just works" is a really strong point for Ubuntu.

Or at the very least, keep the experiments to the non-LTS releases.

Thanks again.

[Bug 264814] Re: Nautilus shows two folders on desktop for one path

2008-09-04 Thread Chris Coulson
Confirming, and assigning to Nautilus. The issue you're experiencing is
because Nautilus is showing mounted volumes on your desktop. It does
this even for volumes that are mounted in folders on the desktop.

[Bug 193578] Re: Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio

2008-09-04 Thread kenden
Same problem here on Hardy.
The problem also happens when resizing Firefox, not only scrolling. Resizing
another application, say Pidgin, does not interrupt the sound from Rhythmbox.

[Bug 264814] [NEW] Nautilus shows two folders on desktop for one path

2008-09-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: sshfs

Behavior:
When mounting a folder with sshfs/fuse nautilus on the desktop

Expected Behavior:
I see one folder for one path.

Repeatable: Yes
$ mkdir ~/Desktop/foo
$ sshfs -f [EMAIL PROTECTED]:. ~/Desktop/foo

looking at the desktop you see two copies of the folder, one had a disk
icon the other shows just a folder.
