2008-11-16 Thread sipiatti
 * Is this reproducible?
definetelly. It is the same always. Can open with ooo, but when saving, I got
the same error every time.

 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
mount an smb share. open a file with openoffice, edit something in it and try
to save.

 * Does nautilus manages to copy files to this directory?
nautilus works fine, also I can copy move delete files via console.

Nikolaus wrote:

I understand this configuration of FUSE has been chosen because of
security concerns, as opposed to using its allow_users or allow_root
  options.

This is not a valid concern. In Ubuntu, allow_root is by default
 enabled in /etc/fuse.conf.

In my untouched 8.04 /etc/fuse.conf, both mount_max and user_allow_other
are commented out, meaning the file has no active options.

So even if gvfs does not use --allow-root, a malicious user can simply
mount a filesystem of his choice manually and with --allow-root.

It's my understanding that Ubuntu have set up automounting of user
filesystems (non-FUSE ones) so a malicious user can have root mount
their concocted filesystem anyway, so I'm not sure what the current
troublesome, non-Unix, FUSE configuration is protecting us from?

2008-11-16 Thread Lorenzo
I get exactly the same problem with both the about and the version with
the following locale output:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8

LC_ADDRESS=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

Fact is that upon upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 with ubuntu-studio
packages all the system got screwed up, so this is not a big bug itself,
but would be useful to know if it is a manifestation of something more
serious, as currently I cannot successfully re-install ubuntu-studio
with rt kernel.

[Bug 298554] Re: Rhythmbox 0.11.6 crashes when trying to play an audio CD

2008-11-16 Thread Pablo W
Hi. I would like to report an update. I re-installed the Medibuntu
Repository that I had already installed before. That is: sudo wget
http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list --output-
document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

and:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring sudo
apt-get update

I had already installed these right after installing Ubuntu, so I wonder
if this changed anything or not. Then I installed for the first time
this:

sudo apt-get install w32codecs

and this

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

After all that, things seem to be working now :) I don't know what/if I
did something wrong, so feedback from the experts will be appreciated.

I also have a different question. Sorry to post it here. If this is not
the right place I hope someone can guide me as for where I should post
it:

I have installed Ubuntu 8.1 from a CD, allocating 15 GB to it, out of
the 80 that the hard drives has. Since I'm liking Ubuntu, I would like
to give it more space. From what Wubi said during the installation, I
know I should leave at least 5 GB free in the drive (that I'm sharing
with Windows). Now my question is how do I allocate more hard drive
space to Ubuntu? Is it something you can do from Ubuntu or should I
uninstall everything (hope not!) and start from scratch with Wubi.

Again, sorry for posting this here, But all this is new to me and I'm a
little bit lost. Thanks.

[Bug 298658] [NEW] gthumb does not contain latest modifications

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I've seen that in the latest release of Ubuntu, Intrepid Ibex, not the
latest gthumb version (from the GNOME trunk) is included but only
2.10.10.

The latest version from the trunk contains some new functionality,
especially the importing of photos based upon its creation time. This
allows photos to be imported into separate sub-folders if they are taken
on a different day or month.

I've tried to build the latest version by hand to test it, but I get

Re: [Bug 249592] Re: Brasero: hangs during mp3 file loading

2008-11-16 Thread stek79
Hi, I've found a test case that makes brasero hang in a repetable way.

It is enough to perform the following steps:

1) open brasero
2) click on audio CD
3) go to a place where you have some mp3 files
4) select the first
5) holding shift, select the last

That sequence makes brasero hang. See the attached screenshot.

I've taken some system measurements after the hang and I can say that no
hardware resource is busy - i.e. no CPU, memory or IO activity. Brasero just
hangs indefinitely (after several minutes I killed it)

Pedro, let me know what are your thoughts.

[Bug 298658] Re: gthumb does not contain latest modifications

2008-11-16 Thread Tormod Volden
A Ubuntu release will usually ship with what was the latest stable
upstream release at the time of the given Ubuntu release's Feature
Freeze. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureFreeze

Trunk versions (= under development) are rarely considered for inclusion
in Ubuntu.

If Gnome releases a new version of gthumb before the feature freeze of
Ubuntu 9.04, you'll get it in 9.04. Also, since Gnome has a standing
Feature Freeze Exception, the new version may slip into Ubuntu after the
normal feature freeze. In some cases a version from the newest Ubuntu
release (or the one under development) can be backported to a previous
Ubuntu release. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

[Bug 298721] [NEW] Calculator doesn't operate as expected

2008-11-16 Thread NickSpencer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

Using the calculator to perform a simple sum (e.g. 16995 - 17.5%) I
punch in the required numbers in that manner and instead it performs
16995 - (17.5 / 100)

I know it seems trivial to a number of computer users that this would be
obvious but my father was confused by this behaviour as by offering a single
line in which to enter operations, the percentage function does NOT operate as
expected.
He expected:
16995 - (16995*(17.5 / 100) )

Trivial I know, but hey - It's a usability bug in my opinion. Mark as

[Bug 298234] [NEW] Gnome panel appears over maximized window when using multiple monitors

2008-11-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I use multiple monitors, one above the other, there are some issues
regarding where the panels are positioned. I have a laptop screen and an
external monitor. As stated in another bug (which I understand is an
issue, but is not the point on this bug), when I turn the external
monitor on (positioned under the laptop screen), the panels are moved to
the external monitor. When I move the panels back to my laptop screen
(as described in the bug workaround), the bottom panel is ignored by
maximized windows, and they use that space without considering the
panel. This leads to the bottom few pixels of each maximized windows
(usually containing a status bar, or the next command to be typed in a
terminal) to be hidden. The attachment explains it better.

[Bug 296021] Re: DBus error when plugging an ext3 formated external usb harddrive in GNOME on 8.10

2008-11-16 Thread Daniel Rentzsch
Okay, I tried to reproduce it and I again got that error.

Then my harddrive crashed and now it is unaccessible. Before, it worked
still fine with my Hardy system.

So there are two possibilities:

a) My harddrive just had some serious issues and Intrepid has something
like a detector for that ;)

b) Intrepid killed my harddrive

As long as my harddrive does not work anymore I can't test any further
what's wrong. When I'm able to recover it, I'll test it again, if I'm
not able to do this I'll close this report.

[Bug 297317] [NEW] Huge tray icons when using double-decker task bar

2008-11-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Basically, I've skinned Ubuntu to look as much like XP as possible. So
naturally I'm trying to create a task bar clone. In XP I usually have a
large number of windows open and thereby use a double-decker task bar
set to auto hide. It appears the only way to do this in Ubuntu is to
increase the vertical height to 60 pixels. Great I sayexcept now
all my tray icons like for pidgin and the start menu (aka menu
button) are HUGE. Also the horizontal line running down the middle is a
little annoying.

I've attached a screenshot of the desktop so you can see what I'm
talking about. Since Ubuntu is supposed to be configure how you want
it, I don't see why there is such a huge (pun not intended) problem
with double-decker task bars. So what I'm looking for is either a
method or solution/fix to getting multi-row tray icons and to shrink the
non-tray icons present in the panel.

[Bug 298743] [NEW] f-spot can't export to CD correctly

2008-11-16 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

When exporting some images to CD, f-spot started to complain about unreadable
files (which is wrong, all files are clearly readable by f-spot). Hitting
Abort on one of the many dialogs complaining about this spurious error and
selecting export to CD again, F-spot says that there are already images to
export. If I then just click export, F-Spot crashes, and the next time I
start it and select export to CD, the list of images to export contains
another copy of every file to export, with the usual duplicate names (see Bug
#250899), up to four or five copies of every file, depending on how often you
try to get the program to do what it is told. You can not emty this list of
files to export, no matter what you do.
If you select export only these images, F-Spot writes only the copies named
dsc.jpg and dsc-1.jpg to the CD, and the resulting ISO image has
the same size F-Spot reported as the resulting size on the very first try to
export, i.E. it indended to export every picture twice from the very beginning.
This is on a pristine installation of intrepid, x86.

Apart from that, F-Spott litters .xsession-errors with
(f-spot:5713): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion
`dest_height 0' failed

Another error I got:
=
Got a SIGABRT while executing native code. This usually indicates
a fatal error in the mono runtime or one of the native libraries
used by your application.
=

I think ubuntu should get rid of F-Spot (and maybe the whole of mono, as
F-Spot is a best of breed mono application, according to Miguel) until

[Bug 298747] [NEW] f-spot crashes during slideshow

2008-11-16 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Sometimes (not often fortunally) f-spot crashes during slideshow.
Today this happens:

- I imported some photos from my photo-camera into f-spot;
- I tagged these photos;
- I started slideshow (my photo-camera was still plugged in);
- After two photos f-spot crashed

I don't know if the same issue happens to me, in the past, always after
importing photos. Now I will look out for this every time I will import
my photos.

[Bug 298755] [NEW] drag and drop desktop to folder hangs

2008-11-16 Thread DaveR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

With nautilus displaying folders and the side pane displayed if I drag a
file from the desktop to a folder and pass over any area of the side
pane that contains text the drag freezes and Nautilus tries to drop the
file in the / folder. In order to successfully complete the d 'n d
operation I have to pass over a blank area of the side pane. I expect
to be able to complete the d'n d operation successfully no matter what
the drag passes over on the way to the destination.

Re: [Bug 225361] Re: ~/.gvfs causes various errors

2008-11-16 Thread Nikolaus Rath
Ralph Corderoy [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
 Nikolaus wrote:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/225361/comments/11
I understand this configuration of FUSE has been chosen because of
security concerns, as opposed to using its allow_users or allow_root
  options.

This is not a valid concern. In Ubuntu, allow_root is by default
 enabled in /etc/fuse.conf.

In my untouched 8.04 /etc/fuse.conf, both mount_max and
user_allow_other are commented out, meaning the file has no active
 options.

Hmm. I'm running 8.04 as well, and here it is enabled. I don't
remember changing it either. However, this is not a fresh install but
has been upgraded several times, so maybe the setting survived from an
older release.

Yes, I don't see any point in that either.

Best,

[Bug 247480] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in e_cal_menu_target_new_select()

2008-11-16 Thread Alan Johnson
I can confirm the exact behavior described by Svt. I still wonder if
the latest version would fix this. The version I references before were
off a bit. The current Ubuntu version 2.22 and the latest stable from
the Evolution project is 2.24.

TJ, could you get the entire 2.24 release into your repo for testing?
Or is that what you meant by cherry picked. I get the feeling that
cherry picked meant you only grabbed certain bits of the 2.24 code
release in your package, but I would be very interested and happy to
test the full 2.24 if it were available in a .deb somewhere.

Please advise. Thanks!

[Bug 185693] Re: [Hardy] Desktop Folder reported twice changing language in automatic changing folder name

2008-11-16 Thread Ashley Hooper
Same problem for me, after changing the language of the computer from
English to French.

I fixed by moving all contents of my old ~/Desktop folder to the new
~/Bureau, including the hidden file '.directory'. After that I logged
out and logged back in and all was well.

[Bug 298778] [NEW] Rhythmbox can't read Ogg FLAC comments

2008-11-16 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a set of Ogg files that use FLAC as the codec (as opposed to
plain .flac files). Rhythmbox can play them, but it can't read the tags
for display, editing, or cataloging. A quick look at the file in a hex
editor shows that the tags are indeed in the file. They use the same
format as an Ogg Vorbis file, so it should be easy to make this work.

[Bug 152648] Re: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error

2008-11-16 Thread Frodon
Let me join the group.

I experience xsession crashes with intrepid ibex with nvidia driver 173 and 177
present in the repos. For me this issue is not random and i have been able to
identify each time what to do to make session crash :
1- right click any Gdesklet
2- play with system-monitir

The strange part in my case is that if i enable metacity composite
manager then i can't reproduce the crash, it goes the same if i replace
metacity by xfwm4 the xfce WM.

Anyone tried the 180 driver and can confirm if it solved the issue ?

Glad to see that at least i'm not alone.

[Bug 298305] Re: evolution crashes when empting trash

2008-11-16 Thread maxadamo
The package broken is: evolution-data-server
The workaround is to downgrade to the previous version by issuing the following
command_
apt-get install evolution-data-server=2.24.1-0ubuntu1
evolution-data-server-common=2.24.1-0ubuntu1 evolution=2.24.1-0ubuntu2
evolution-common=2.24.1-0ubuntu2 evolution-plugins=2.24.1-0ubuntu2
evolution-plugins-experimental=2.24.1-0ubuntu2

i don't know if you have to downgrade all the staff, but this workaround
will fix the problem.

My two cent:
a bad practice in the Linux world is to continuously release all those minor
updates, without any good testing (I hope nobody wants to say that tests were
good if I cannot empty the trash...)... in this case the update were broken (I
am also upset as I have an UMTS with limited data consumption per day. That's
why I am bothering here :-) ).
Furthermore in the real world of desktop users, these kind of bugs are to be
considered severe usability issues. I use Ubuntu with Evolution at work, and I
am much worried about these usability issues than security concerns and so
on

[Bug 226216] Re: Clock applet consistently displays different timezone after reboot

2008-11-16 Thread BlackAdder
Yesterday was one of these days: found myself two big SCSI harddisks (4.6GB
+ 9.1GB) and a matching 53c825-based PCI SCSI card and installed Intrepid Ibex
(aka Ubuntu 8.10 desktop edition).
Afterwards - i.e. after installing the latest patches - the version of the
clock panel turned out to be 2.24.1.
I configured the ntp servers (*.be.pool.ntp.org), added my location as
described above and shut the machine.
Today, upon rebooting, the time zone was still Europe/Brussels. It would seem
the problem is fixed!
