[Bug 307855] [NEW] screen resolution monitor doesn't refresh when dual monitor is plugged

2009-01-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am very happy to see improvements in the dual monitor settings in
ubuntu.

I have a laptop and an external full HD monitor, Ubuntu 8.10 which I am
able to make function after spending some time configuring the displays
(and rebooting). I am only able to make it work using Nvidia X Server
settings.

The problem is that when I open Preferences - Screen Resolution, the external
display doesn't show.
I do press the Detect Displays button in the Monitor Resolution Settings
window, but NOTHING HAPPENS.

On the other hand, Nvidia X Server settings does refresh and shows both
screens.

Re: [Bug 316848] Re: times played counter for the last track in the album is not updated

2009-01-14 Thread Lukasz Walewski
Yes, the bug is reproducible. It affects all albums in my collection -
every last track in the album has the counter set to Never.

To reproduce the bug set the view so it includes the times played
column in the tracks part of main rhythmbox window and play some album.
When playing comes to the last track observe the times played counter
for this track: you will see that it does not change its value after the
track finished playing.

[Bug 316726] Re: startup crash after 2.24.3 update

2009-01-14 Thread Hakan Urhan
Although hggdh stated that the update will be available soon, here is
resolution for the people that can't wait for it (like me).

I downloaded the source package from (Thanks to hggdh for the link)
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/evolution-exchange/2.24/evolution-exchange-2.24.3.tar.bz2

and I had to install the following packages to be able to compile it (I
use Ubuntu 8.10 2.6.27-11)

evolution-dev libcamel1.2-dev libedataserver1.2-dev libnspr4-dev
libsoup2.4-dev libsqlite3-dev intltool libebook1.2-dev libecal1.2-dev
libedataserverui1.2-dev libegroupwise1.2-dev libebackend1.2-dev
libexchange-storage1.2-dev libedata-book1.2-dev libedata-cal1.2-dev
libldap2-dev

then
./configure
make
sudo make install

solved my problem. I removed the extra dev packages afterwards.

[Bug 310586] Re: evolution startup hangs with assertion `E_IS_SEARCHING_TOKENIZER (st)' failed

2009-01-14 Thread Foobar
I get the same messages, but after I copied the evolution folder and
gconf folder from another machine. The headers show up, but it's
impossible to get to the actual mail. When the program is in this state,
it's also not possible to close the program in a normal way. So, there
is a code path leading to this error. In the mean time, can you suggest
a version of Evolution that's relatively free of defects?

thank you for your bug report, that's not a bug though, the update is a

list those as not upgradable yet and wait until it's built on your
architecture, if you use other tools and acknowledge the changes without
reading what the tool suggest installing or not that's not an ubuntu bug
but an user error, standard users should wait until the upgrade goes to

[Bug 317057] [NEW] Movie fails to play after auto download and install of codecs etc

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston
Public bug reported:

Have included details per Please include, if possible as follows :

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu.
ubuntu 8.10 desktop i386 installed from the Live iso cd image (its excellent)

the installation is minimal - details hopefully in the bug report collected
info - will add details if required but not sure exactly what you will want so
briefly listing these -

* installed on a 40 gb hard drive partitioned to dual boot with whingedoze XP
partitioned as follows -
-- 5gb windows on sda1
-- sda5 to sda15 partitioned in chunks max 5gb but smaller for /boot and /tmp
and /swap
boot selection via grub

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
totem:
  Installed: 2.24.2-0ubuntu4

3) What you expected to happen
Expected the movies to play.
used normal DVDs -
a) No Quarter - Jimmy page and robert plant - Unledded
b) TopGear - The challenges
c) The Brittas Empire - complete series 2

4) What happened instead
No quarter gave a message saying it couldnt play the disc after totem had
automatically initiated a download of some package updates for codecs etc.
message box was shown with messages an error occurred and Could not read
from resource.

Top Gear and Brittas Empire both just hung and didnt respond so I ended
up force closing totem.

I noted there is a later candidate version available so as soon as I can I will
try that and update the bug report.
Meanwhile, please let me know whether the details provided enable you to

[Bug 317002] Re: Evolution broken with this mornings upograde and uninstalled

2009-01-14 Thread Hein van Rensburg
Sebastiaan,

Under updates I had all 4 tabs checked and I used the Ubuntu update
manager which told me there where updates available. When it run it told
me that it will remove Evolution. I thought that I needed to reinstall
it again afterwards, but as can be seen from bug report it broke my
installation and does not allow me to reinstall evolution at all.

This is my primary PIM and I have all my contacts and hundreds of emails
which is now inaccessible. I have done the same procedure many times
before and am not alone in this. Ubuntu needs to take care of this
situation because it has already broken many installations which did the
same as I this today. It has catastrophic results and is a real crisis
which locks ubuntu users out of their main application software. This
needs a action now by Ubuntu bug or no bug. Could you pls forward this
to the the responsible people in Ubuntu.

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston
ran apport to collect info about the fail when playing dvd No Quarter which
gives the message an error occurred, Could not read from resource.
tried to lodge it by subscribing but dont know if the extra attachments were
added because the bug report system gave me the message you are already
subscribed to this bug (of course, because I lodged it and was just trying to
provide extra info).
It might be a single bug, or 2 different problems for the different dvds.

I eagerly await your advice and help.

Of course, same problem and same situation here.

But this is anyway a blocker, as the application can't be used, and I
do not agree the importance field set to medium.

Or should we really consider consider recompiling evolution is a workaround?
The workaround is to use the webmail (hoping you don't have other mailboxes
configured in Evolution).

cheers.

[Bug 310575] Re: A3 pdf file is cropped and printed on A4 paper

2009-01-14 Thread ferro
I can confirm that if you specify explicitly A3 it prints correctly. But is
this the way it should be? If i print to Lenny cups queue or Sarge, i don't
have to specify anything and i have mixed format PDFs in a directory and just
do a
lpr -P xerox1 *.pdf
and each document is printed correctly, no matter if A3 or A4. This does not
work with 2ubuntu6 version. I strongly disagree that it is a correct and
expected print processing that If i print an A3 document it comes out cropped
on A4 paper?? It can be better, the information is there, cups has just to use
it, it it obviously worked as expected in other/older versions.

And i am not talking about printing from GUI applications like evince or
acroread, just because you have to click on thousand buttons to get what
you want, which makes it error prone.

Sebastian, it might be, as you suggest, concerning the fact that gnome-

#67188. Please consider this.

[Bug 316877] Re: Nautilus freezes completely when accessing large exterior hard drive (500Gb)

2009-01-14 Thread Greya
So, I've tried to do what's described in the wiki. This is the first
time I debug a program, so I probably did something not quite correctly,
cause I couldn't get (gdb) backtrace full in the beginning. But
somehow I managed to have it working (following all the instructions).

I will attach several gdb logs:

1) Backtrace through running the program == gdb-nautilus-1.txt
How I got this log:
I tried to start the program as described
 gdb nautilus 21 | tee gdb-nautilus.txt
(gdb) handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
(gdb) set pagination 0
(gdb) run
Then in the so opened nautilus window I tried to access some directories
(external drive, File system) - nautilus hung up and nothing could open there
except for my Desktop and Documents directory, but this time I could Stop it
(through Stop button) and close the nautilus window.
So, I tried to continue in terminal with (gdb) backtrace full - it wrote me
No stack, and for (gdb) info registers - it wrote No registers. (as I've
got no backtrace in gdb-nautilus.txt, I don't attach it)

Then I've restarted the procedure all over to try it again - at this
stage nautilus was probably already not working - you will see it in the
log - nautilus didn't open through (gdb) run, but! I could get the
backtrace this time (gdb-nautilus-1.txt) :)

The I had to reboot cause no desktop again and nautilus not working(((
and performed step 2 below

2) Backtrace for Already running programs == gdb-nautilus-1.txt

This time I did:
 pidof nautilus
replied: 7185
Then gdb 21 | tee gdb-nautilus-2.txt
(gdb) handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
 (gdb) set pagination 0
 (gdb) attach 7185
Then (gdb) continue
no nautilus window opened (I don't know whether it should have opened). So, I
opened nautilus /home/greya/ and tried to go to File System from the left panel
- nautilus freezed completely. I did Fore Quit - everything on desktop
disappeared again, nautilus not working.

3) Then, in this completely freezed state I tried to do the backtrace
procedure again to see what errors it will show. I did again :

 pidof nautilus
replied: 7185
Then gdb 21 | tee gdb-nautilus-freezed.txt
(gdb) handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
 (gdb) set pagination 0
 (gdb) attach 7185

and that's what it replied this time:

Attaching to process 7185
ptrace: Operation not permitted.
(gdb) Hangup detected on fd 0
error detected on stdin

(see gdb-nautilus-freezed.txt)

OUHH! now I cannot attach you the log files from my home directory -
While I was writing all this - nautilus must have hang up again!!! I
only opened the 3 log files concerned to copy some lines in here and now
when I try to attach a file here - my home directory doesn't open. I had
to copy these files onto my Desktop to attach them here!!!

And in general, when nautilus hangs up and when I can stop it quickly
(stop button) - I cannot access not only the external drive, but File
System directories, my home directory neither (as now) :((

[Bug 316862] Re: Nautilus fails to browse windows shares

2009-01-14 Thread Mark Ellse
Can't use Jaunty - flaky with my hardware. Am using Intrepid on live CD
(same behaviour with Hardy) and Intrepid on two installed machines, one
of which is an LTSP server. These have latest updates.

On live CD machines I connect by clicking Places, Network, then double-
clicking Windows Network, Staff (the name of the workgroup). When
browsing is working properly, this displays the contents of the
workgroup. When browsing isn't working, the address bar shows
'smb://staff/' and Nautilus reports '0 items'. When browsing is working
properly, the hosts on the workgroup are displayed.

On the fully installed machines I connect by clicking Places, Network.
When browsing is working properly, this displays the contents of the
Staff workgroup because of Workgroup=Staff in smb.conf. When not working
the behaviour is as above.

I can always browse the student network and see and browse the student
server. (There is nothing else to see because the other machines are on
a different VLAN.)

If I type smb://172.19.53.n/, where n is the machine number, I can see
the machine in question and browse it.

I cannot browse a machine by typing smb://staff/hostname/ in the address
bar.

I observe that Nautilus, heirachically:
WILL browse a Windows network and see the workgroups,
WILL NOT (always) browse a workgroup to see the hosts on it
WILL browse a host on the network once it is contacting it via its IP address.

Smb4K will always browse the workgroup.

The behaviour is intermittent. When it occurs, none of the Ubuntu
machines will browse the workgroup. This leads me to think it is a
change in the Windows 2000 network that initiates the problem and the
way that Nautilus interrogates the Windows browser service for a
workgroup.

2009-01-14 Thread Mark Ellse
Dear Zack,

Thanks for taking this seriously. I've spent a few hours on it this morning
and added to the bug report what I have found.

For your information I attach to this email the screenshots of what I
observe. By the way, for historical reasons, our staff workgroup is given
the awkward name fo27183142, not Staff.

Cheers,

Mark

2009/1/13 Zack Powers zpow...@umflint.edu

Testing this in Jaunty on 4:40PM EST, Jan 13th.

When using the Connect to Server... dialog in Place-Connect to
Server..., Nautilus gives an error when attempting to browse a share.

When opening Nautilus and using the Network shortcut to browse the
network root, browsing various shares and workgroups work fine.

When pasting smb:// URLs into the nautilus address bar browsing also
 works fine.

Mark Ellse, could you clarify which method you used to browse the
 shares?

Status in nautilus source package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nautilus

Forgive long explanation below detailing, as well as the range of the
problem, some experiments to isolate the problem.
 Windows peer-to-peer network with
 (a) about twenty Windows 2000 and 98 machines
 (b) one Ubuntu machine running Samba server for student purposes (smb.conf
Workgroup = Students, Dapper LTS Server)
 (c) one LTSP network with three terminals running Samba server for staff
purposes (smb.conf set to make Staff the workgroup) (Intrepid, latest
 patches as of 13/1/09)
 (d) one standalone Ubuntu Intrepid machine (smb.conf Workgroup = Staff,
Intrepid, latest patches as of 13/1/09)
 (e) two Ubuntu machines running from the live CD for test purposes. (No
 workgroup set)

It's a school. There are two workgroups: Staff and Students.

Windows (Staff) machines (a) always show the presence of the other machines
 on their (Staff) workgroup.
Nautilus on (b) to (e) intermittently displays the Windows machines on the
 Staff workgroup.
When Nautilus works, Places, Network on machines (c) and (d) displays the
machines on the Staff workgroup, and also the Windows Network icon, through
which you can find the Student workgroup. On machines (e), where no
workgroup is set, one has to go through the Windows Network icon to the
 Staff network.
When Nautilus doesn't work, only the Windows Network icon is visible.
Clicking that makes the other Windows networks visible, but no shares on the
Staff workgroup are visible. But (b) on the Student network, is always
 visible.

BUT, Smb4K is installed on (c) and (d), and even when Nautilus is off,
using Smb4K, one can seek, browse, connect to other machines on the Staff
 network.

The two machines (d) using live CD's are there for test purposes. They
observe the same behaviour with Intrepid, Hardy, Gutsy live CDs.

post-Gutsy problems. But now it is clearly evident in Gutsy. That makes me
think that the problem may have arisen not through a change in Ubuntu, but
from a change in the Windows network. I did wonder if this was a consequence
of a Windows 2000 security update, possible affecting the Windows browser
 service.

ii) I noticed that that attempting to browse the Staff workgroup via
Places, Network, Windows Network, Staff results in an extremely rapid return
of '0 items', whereas when browsing the other default (empty) workgroups
(WORKGROUP, MSHOME) it takes about six seconds before '0 items' is
displayed. This means that there is something on the network that is rapidly
telling Nautilus that there is nothing there.

[Bug 317057] Re: Movie fails to play after auto download and install of codecs etc

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston

actions taken so far -

per info in answer to question 49761 -
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+question/49761

searched for the following packages -
libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2

libdvdread3 and libdvdnav4 were already installed and were up to date.
Could not find libdvdcss2 but it showed three packages for restricted-extras -
kubuntu-restricted-extras
xubuntu-restricted-extras
ubuntu-restricted-extras

I searched for and found packages for
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
(the search for libdvdcss2 found the packages listed above)

since the description for ubuntu-restricted-extras seemed to cover the
things listed for the other 2, I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras
and its several dependencies.

tried again to see whether the restricted extras solved the problem but
got same result for No Quarter dvd

have now upgraded the totem package version 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
the disc was still in the player so I started totem from
Applications-SoundVideo and then selected play disc from the movie menu.

same result. error message Could not read from resource.

please advise.

[Bug 317057] Re: Movie fails to play after auto download and install of codecs etc

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston
as noted, I have now upgraded the totem package version 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
the disc was still in the player so I started totem from
Applications-SoundVideo and then selected play disc from the movie menu.

same result for No Quarter - error message Could not read from
resource.

same result for TopGear - totem just sits there with the rotating
system busy mouse pointer icon and I end up giving up after a couple of
minutes of no result.

I searched for totem bug reports and found a couple that might be related -
Bug #219062 reported by bmdavis on 2008-04-18 (low)
Could not read from resource error when playing encrypted DVD
looks like the one that I get when I try playing the No Quarter dvd

Bug #280780 reported by Murray Cumming on 2008-10-09 (medium)
Totem hangs when asked to play DVD
is similar to what happens when I try playing dvds TopGear and Brittas Empire
series 2.
but the symptoms are slightly different - the disc name is unaffected on the
play movie option under the movie menu - it shows the dvdname ok all the time
in the menu option, it just doesnt play the movie, just as for bug 280780

Can this bug report #317057 be linked to both #280780 and #219062 rather
than just closing it as a duplicate of only one of those ?

[Bug 316224] [NEW] Low battery power suspend inhibited by audio player

2009-01-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I was working on battery power, cutting things to the wire, and noticed
that when gnome-power-manager attempted to suspend my machine (to save
it from dying), Rhythmbox inhibited the suspend because it was playing
audio.

Clearly saving data / avoiding disk corruption is more important than
playing audio, so in this instance, the suspend inhibit ought to be
overriden.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 219062 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219062

I reread some of the info in bug #280780 and realised that libdvdcss2 is
not packaged as a separate package, which is implied from some of the
comments and instructions.

I ran the script libdvdcss2 from package libdvdread3 and it fixed the problem
for the TopGear dvd
It now plays OK.

That suggests that bug #280780 is actually a packaging problem.

[Bug 317098] Re: Epiphany browser crashing while surfing, ubuntu 8.10

2009-01-14 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

could you try to run sudo apt-get upgrade and copy the log there? that's
not a gnome-games bug but rather a command called during the

[Bug 219062] Re: Could not read from resource error when playing encrypted DVD

2009-01-14 Thread David Johnston
yep that was brilliant, Milan.
Thanks for your explanation.

I tried playing the dvd No Quarter again after running the libdvdcss2
script and it now plays OK.

since it isnt part of the official package, it would greatly help if the
comments attached to the ubuntu-restricted-extras package could be updated to
note that it may be necessary to run the script
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh once they are installed.
I think that would save a lot of bug reports being lodged.

Anyway, thanks again, Milan. All my current dvd problems are now solved.

[Bug 219062] Re: Could not read from resource error when playing encrypted DVD

2009-01-14 Thread Milan
This is not actually a packaging problem. libdvdcss2 is only available
from medibuntu repositories since it cannot be included due to legal
issues about decrypting DVDs. What I'd like to see is a dialog allowing
to run the script in one click.
