[Bug 310854] Re: Printing Photos with Canon original drivers stopped working in Intrepid

2009-01-18 Thread krisse
Anyone tried the Poppler fix?

Running an up to date Ubuntu 8.10; printing with canon's drivers.
Experiencing problems similar to the ones reported above. Specifically
the error 32 stuff, which leads to nothing being printed.

Odd-sized printouts was fixed by manually creating a page-size. I seem
to recall that width/height was to be reported as opposite that seemed
what would have been intuitive to me (as in: what I thought was "width"
had to be entered as "height"); but it might be I just understood that
part wrong, so ignore it at will.

It's a case of not-my-computer-and-I-want-to-mess-with-it-as-little-as-
possible, which is why I'm asking, before trying myself, if the poppler
packages in -proposed solves something for someone having problems with
pixma-printing.

[Bug 318508] Re: Unable to mount ISO file using Archive Mounter

2009-01-18 Thread Chris Crisafulli
Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

I followed the steps you outlined.
I right clicked on and .iso file, chose Open with Archive Mounter. The new
device appeard on the left in the area with the rest of the mounted drives. As
soon as I clicked on it, My nautilus window immediately closed itself. I am on
Intrepid Ibex 8.10 not 64 bit though.

[Bug 318508] [NEW] Unable to mount ISO file using Archive Mounter

2009-01-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If I try to mount an ISO image using Nautilus menu->Open with->Archive Mounter,
the CD Image appears in the left panel listing available devices and has icon
of unmounted drive.
If I click on the new device nautilus crashes.

I don't know where to find debugging info from Nautilus. Runing it from
terminal has no effect, becouse it doesn't block the terminal, which it
is run from. It does only Nautilus run under root. By runing `sudo
nautilus', I get the following error message immediately after clicking
the "Archive Mounter" in Nautilus menu:

Added new job source 0x1827820 (GVfsBackendArchive)
Queued new job 0x18278a0 (GVfsJobMount)
send_reply, failed: 0
register_mount_callback, mount_reply: 0x18201e0, error: (nil)

However, Nautilus run under root doesn't add new device to the list. So
I can't reproduce the crash from it (or I don't know how).

Furthermore, Nautilus prints the following into /var/log/syslog
immediately before crashing:

Jan 18 19:39:18 DESKTOP-Linux kernel: [34246.594629] nautilus[21945]:

libglib-2.0.so.0.1800.2[7f818f1cf000+c3000]

I use Ubuntu Intrepid x86-64.

PS: I'm really not sure where is the problem, so please change the
package accordingly.

[Bug 300017] Re: Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match

2009-01-18 Thread Octavio Alvarez
I fail to see how "enabling the menus unconditionally and showing an
error if gvfs fails to create a folder after the user requested it"
would lead to a nautilus breakage. More over, Nautilus is already broken
by disallowing a permitted user to create a file or folder.

Looks to me that ssh is only guilty for not providing a way of detecting
session permissions, and that's one part of the issue and should be
addressed separately. Given this problem with ssh, constraining the user
for creating any file or folder (or pasting) if he actually is allowed
to do so sure is a Nautilus or gvfs bug.

I would expect this bug to be either left as new in case a fix is
released by other means, or to be marked as triaged and wait for a
developer that wants to pick it up, mark it as wontfix or
redirected/reassigned to a more proper package. I'm resetting it to new,
in the hope for a different action to be taken.

terminate the startup sequence (this is what I get for not reading the

[Bug 318629] Re: [jaunty] nautilus sets urgent wm hint when not needed

2009-01-18 Thread A. Walton
This is happening because libunique calls gtk_window_present() on the
window inside of unique_app_real_message_received; whenever a second
Nautilus instance fires up, it sends the message to the running instance
and libunique "presents" the list of windows that it is watching again.
The "fix" is to remove the watch.

The following patch should do the trick:

2009-01-18 Thread rajesh
** Description changed:

I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till
2 days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started.
I have checked in the forums and confirm that:
dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.*

The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time
(around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were
no [OK] for the hal daemon.

Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof
  hal returns no pids.

- P.S: Also, my eth0 is not detected. I am not able to use internet to
- post the logs from there. If information is provided regarding how to
- enable network from text mode, it will be fine to give more details from
- linux system. Currently I have to reboot the system to post the bugs.
+ --
+ Now I have upgraded my dist by dist-upgrade, and now hal daemon is started
correctly. But still, the gdmgreeter is not started. The gdmgreeter is
restarted repeatedly without showing the login screen.
+ I could see the gdmgreeter pid changing in process status, implying that a
new gdmgreeter is being started again repeatedly. I even tried restarting gdm
manually, but with no use:

[Bug 277325] Re: gnome-sound-properties capture has not been a working feature for a few releases

2009-01-18 Thread komputes
The UI for the new volume control in Jaunty is simplified and removes
many options (which is a good thing). There is a live volume level so
you can tell if your microphone is capturing properly. Mine is not but
that's a completely separate bug. There is no test functionality to see
if the sound is recorded properly (confirming any mangled audio or
static audio bugs we may have in the future). Would/Should we push to
incorporate this functionality or should we just be content with the
volume levels included in Jaunty?

[Bug 318629] [NEW] [jaunty] nautilus sets urgent wm hint when not needed

2009-01-18 Thread Sebastian Keller
Public bug reported:

Nautilus seems to set the urgent hint to windows that don't really need
any attention.

Steps to reproduce
1. Close all currently open nautilus windows.
2. Open a nautilus window, navigate to "Desktop" (or any other folder than home)
3. Move that nautilus window to a different workspace so you don't see it
anymore.
4. Click on Places and open your home folder
-> The nautilus window on the other desktop sets the urgent hint and the
tasklist entry starts blinking.

[Bug 318625] [NEW] Rhythmbox shouldn't set illegal / special characters on filenames (i.e. "?"; question mark) when ripping to NTFS volumes

2009-01-18 Thread John Ward
Public bug reported:

Whenever a song name has a special character like a "question mark" (?)
in it (for example, "Where is my Mind?" or "Are You In?"), Rhythmbox
rips the song to the drive and names the file with the special

On NTFS volumes (and probably FAT32 and lower) these characters (such as
"?"; question mark) are illegal and make the file inaccessible and
useless within Windows because it doesn't recognise or read files with
illegal characters. It becomes impossible the deletion, renaming or
reading of the file within Windows systems.

TEST CASE:

[1] - Rip a song from a CD using Rhythmbox that has a special character
in its name like a "?" question mark (Where is my Mind?) and make sure
it rips to an NTFS volume.

[2] - Exit Linux, go into a Windows system and try and play, delete or
rename the file that has the special character in it. You'll find that
you get an error message about the usage of illegal characters anytime
you try and delete or rename the file and the file will not be playable
by programmes within Windows that are designed to read it, such as
Windows Media Player, Winamp or VLC etc.

[3] - Conclusion: When illegal characters are set on files by Rhythmbox
(or Linux in general) on NTFS volumes, those files become completely
inaccessible within Windows. You have to to return to Linux to delete,
rename or read / play the files.

Maybe this is an issue for the NTFS-3g driver, it should prevent the
incorrect naming of files that go onto NTFS volumes.

There should probably be an option within Rhythmbox to strip special
characters from the filename (not necessarily the tag, as there they are
compatible) or replace them with something compatible.

This above proposal is similar to bug # 264283.

Since the vast majority of these are reporting a very specific set of

[Bug 318597] [NEW] 'Attach' Photo/FIle Icons too Small to be Used

2009-01-18 Thread Merlinpilot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I try to attach photograph files to an Evolution email message,
everything works fine except that the preview images alongside the file
names for photographs are so small as to be unusable. This situation
arises particularly when replying to an email and trying to add a photo
to the reply.

Selection of the correct file is very difficult and I keep Nautilus open
alongside to get big enough images to identify the correct file - this
is a rather untidy workaround.

Is there a way to have bigger preview images in the email attach window,
or is this a basic shortcoming of Evolution - in which case this becomes
a suggestion for improvement?

I am using 8.10 and Evolution 2.24.2.

Screenshot attached (I hope)

[Bug 277404] Re: hp laserjet postscript text print does not print some characters

2009-01-18 Thread Till Kamppeter
As lp3.ps displays correctly with Ghostscript ("gs l3.ps") it is
possible that we are hitting a bug of the PostScript interpreters in
many HP printers here (or even more than one bug, as the HP LaserJet
P3005 crashes). So it is not necessarily to be fixed in Poppler but by
perhaps by HP in their PPDs.

The simplest fix HP could do is following Ron Morse's suggestion to
switch their PPDs to PostScript Level 2 by changing the
"*LanguageLevel:" lines. Perhaps their are more sophisticated solutions,
like adding a "*JobPatchFile"s, but this only the developers at HP can
now.

Reopening HPLIP upstream task.

[Bug 297472] [NEW] There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

2009-01-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I run hardy heron x86_64. Never had a problem. Today after 3 updates
came in, I turned off the machine and later at night started it and
after I enter my login info I have a hang time of about 5 mn, and then I
have this message:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.
The last error message was:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

I did not change any settings in appearance. Same problem on my wife's session
(different theme, icons, wallpaper...)
I am convinced the three updates today produced this bug.
Thanks for your help.

Dolphin, the KDE file manager, seems to work as you would hope. So that

[Bug 300017] [NEW] Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match

2009-01-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If you connect to a remote SFTP folder, the UID and GID is interpreted
using the local users and groups database. This makes the "Create
Folder" and "Create Document" options to be greyed out.

I'm aware of bugs like 229270 and 9252, but I am reporting this as a
separate issue because it is not the same to display ownerships than to
prevent the user from doing working.

If SFTP permissions are known to be misinterpreted, just don't make the
Create Folder / Create Document / Paste menu items availability depend
on those while the bug is being fixed.

I'm sure I do have correct permissions: if I log in to the SSH server
and cd to the path, creating the folder through the shell works.

[Bug 292504] Re: Use embedded icons for executable files

2009-01-18 Thread Endolith
It would be better to use the extracted icon as the file's actual icon,
instead of as a thumbnail, in the same way that you can set a custom
icon for a file using the Properties dialog.

Again, I'm not sure if there's any precedent for this, though (using
different icons for files of the same MIME type based on their content)

[Bug 294677] Re: Wrong description for Word documents and Excel spreadsheets

2009-01-18 Thread Krzysztof Kosiński
I can still open Word templates from Nautilus after I manually remove
those entries. If you remove those lines from openoffice.org-common.xml,
Nautilus will be fine, because it's the .desktop files that say to
Nautilus what a given application can open.

MIME packages define how to recognize a given mimetype, not how to open
it. The problem arises from bogus mimetype definitions in openoffice
.org-common.xml overriding the correct ones from shared-mime-database.

[Bug 318563] [NEW] File selector dialogs are not centered

2009-01-18 Thread Sebastian Keller
Public bug reported:

The file selector dialog in every app is not centered anymore. Thats because
when it gets shown, it is a small window, which is centered, but then it gets
resized and thus is not centered anymore. I guess it first should get shown
when the actual size has been set so the window manager could center it
correctly.
Also sometimes after the first resize there is a second resize making the
window small again, I guess thats some kind of race condition.

Steps to reproduce:
 - start gedit
 - press ctrl+o (or click on the open button)
 - for less then a second you can see a small version of the open dialog

[Bug 315623] Re: [jaunty] weird crash is specific directory

2009-01-18 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Hi Connor, thanks for helping. I can't do that exactly because of bug
#314212. However I made a backtrace as indicated at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

The backtrace above happens with the source for amarok-1.4.10. I got
that originally with "apt-get source amarok", but since the Jaunty
repositories passed to amarok2 you might need to get it from somewhere
else. Apt gave me amarok_1.4.10-0ubuntu3.dsc,
amarok_1.4.10-0ubuntu3.diff.gz and amarok_1.4.10.orig.tar.gz. I only
untarred the orig.tar.gz file* and I didn't apply the Ubuntu diff.**

(*: apt does the unpacking itself, but I had deleted the unpacked directory for
space.)
(**: my original report was with the diff applied. This backtrace is without
it, though.)

Then I entered amarok-1.4.10 and ran gdb as demanded in the Backtrace
wiki page. I ran nautilus with "run amarok/src", which is the directory
that makes it crash.

Anyway, I can obtain crashes inside the amarok2 source, too (the ./src
folder).

Let me know if I can help more.

[Bug 318535] [NEW] right-click on album → burn to CD

2009-01-18 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I tried to teach my mom how to burn an audio CD using RB, and failed to
do so. Turns out the process is too complex for her.

Would it be possible to right-click an album in the browser and get a
right-click menu with a "burn to CD" menu item?

Maybe even right click an artist to get the same possibility, in which
case RB would ask for a new blank CD for every different album belonging
to that artist.

Geert, i'd follow Jonathan Marsden's advice if i were you. Be patient and keep
trying out the stuff that people suggest. Try to write down what you tried, and
where it failed. Also keep in mind that making correct sentences without
spelling mistakes makes it more likely that you'll get an answer. This is
because people might otherwise think that you're not making an effort, so why
should they bother helping you.

In the new Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 3 this behaviour is the default. Firefox

search for something that is not on the page (firefox). If find this
very annoying because it is very loud, also when you are in college and
you already muted the sound so you dont disturb anyone.

[Bug 318530] [NEW] Mijn Evolution is voor een grotere scherresolutie bestemmd.

2009-01-18 Thread geert.vl2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Gegroet Mensen.

[Bug 318523] [NEW] "application/msword-template" is not a legal mimetype name

2009-01-18 Thread Krzysztof Kosiński
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

shared-mime-info uses "application/msword-template" for MS Word

Please mark this bug as invalid on shared-mime-info and file a separate
bug for application/msword-template if you don't like it, because that
mimetype not complying to IANA rules is completely irrelevant to this
bug, which is about OO.o MIME package overriding shared-mime-info

[Bug 318517] [NEW] Word wrapping is not respecting indentation

2009-01-18 Thread drx
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When wrapping a line it would be awesome to have gedit indent the
wrapped line just like the original line.

Imagine "_" being a space character, the current wrapping works like
this

hello hello hello hello hello
hello hello hello

It would be better if it worked like this:

hello hello hello hello hello
hello hello hello

While editing this makes code-indentation readable even if the editing
window is resized to be very narrow. It is also very helpful for
unavoidable long lines, like regexps or URLs. It makes formatting less
of a pain with generated code. etc etc etc

KDE editor component and Eclipse both have this behaviour, it was also
present in the famous EditPlus editor for Windows.

I am sure i am not the first person requesting this feature, so i wonder
if there is a philosophical stance against this wrapping style or if a
plugin is available to handle it.
