[Bug 203782] Re: [Wishlist] Vinagre is very bandwith demaning and should support using lower color depth

2009-01-27 Thread pt123
What is the deal with all these new remote desktop applications even
though they are newer they are so slow compared xvnc4viewer which was
developed so long ago. I thought with open source, applications improve
over time as the previous code is available.

Vinagre and gtkvncviewer suffer from this.
https://launchpad.net/gtkvncviewer

The only hope left for us is this application called
Grdc - GTK+/Gnome Remote Desktop Client
http://grdc.sourceforge.net/

Which seems to support color depth
http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=248852&ssid=97818

But unfortunate there are no Ubuntu packages to test

[Bug 49127] Re: Long file names are truncated without warning

2009-01-27 Thread Jeffrey Theobald
Just confirming that while there is a dialog telling you that filenames
are too long, it won't tell you which filenames are too long and
magically helps you.

I also want to second the comment about it truncating filenames that
are too short (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-cd-
burner/+bug/49127/comments/4), for anyone burning disks of photos that
use filenames as descripters, 64 characters is really not enough.

K3B doesn't have this problem (but then I can't burn an entire disk with
it because it crashes midway through taking my entire XFS partition with
it until I reboot).

Did you mean to send this to another email address? Mine is or should

someone else wrote the 'fix committed' message.

At any rate, thanks for everything you're doing; Ubuntu is a really

[Bug 322181] [NEW] Yelp contains references to Ubuntu when it could be distro-neutral

2009-01-27 Thread Twisted Lincoln, Inc.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

In Yelp's table of contents page, as well as the description of the
program via it's GNOME launcher, Ubuntu is referenced specifically
(usually in the form of "Get help with Ubuntu").

There is no reason to specifically reference Ubuntu at all in yelp
itself -- yelp should be a distro-neutral help display system. Instead
references to the specific distribution should go in the actual help
docs themselves (in Ubuntu's case, the ubuntu-docs package).

Removing these specific references would allow derivative distros to use
yelp without having to first modify it to remove the trademarks.

Bump. Seems to stutter for sample rates of 12000 and below, but not for

alsasink

stutters but

gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location="tmp-12k.mp3" ! mad ! alsasink

plays smoothly, so it seems like the "mp3parse" plugin is the culprit.

Bls: [Bug 321812] Re: brasero cannot read cdrom device for burning

2009-01-27 Thread deru
Your welcome. But I have resolved this bug when I found chmod for my
cdrom is not read & write for user, so I change it and my brasero can
read my device, and burn it all again. Thanks for your attentions.

Hi deru.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We need more information in order to investigate your
problem.

First of all can you attach the following file:

1. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
2. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

so that we can have more information about your hardware configuration.

Can you post the error message (if any) that you have gotten from
brasero?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Bug 5465] Re: ID3 tags not recognised

2009-01-27 Thread MSchadone
I cannot confirm. The problem was with mp3's having multiple tags written to
them and RhythmBox not
being able to identify that fact. I have not found any program that writes
multiple tags of the
same version to an MP3 file (which was not the issue with RhythmBox);
therefore, I cannot produce a
test.

1. A source MP3 file has multiple ID3v2 tags written in the meta data.
2. RhythmBox is unable to rewrite the tag (it writes to the first one, but
displays the last one).
3. RhythmBox is not responsible for the creation of second or subsequent ID3v2
tags in the same MP3.

So, there is no way to test this scenario. Multiple ID3v2 tags are against the
standard and appear
to be the issue here and not RhythmBox.

Solve: Use a program designed specifically for ID3 tag manipulation and remove
all ID3 tags from the
file (i.e. remove tags multiple times until it shows up blank), then create
your own tags. This
will fix the issue with RhythmBox and any other media player which displays ID3
tag data.

[Bug 322160] [NEW] Evolution doesn't offer options to open attachments with content-type of application/octet-stream

2009-01-27 Thread PeterK47
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am reporting this bug even though it is being reported as fixed - see
bug #273736. I perform all updates regularly and the bug is still not
fixed. Evolution will not offer options to open attachments when the
mailer program incorrectly lists the Content-Type as application/octet-
stream. I realise that this is more a problem with the sender's end but
it worked perfectly in Hardy and only stopped working after upgrading to
Intrepid.

System info:
Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid)
Kernel 2.6.27-9-server
Evolution 2.24.3

In my opinion a bug should not be reported as fixed until the fix is in
the intrepid-updates repositories not just the intrepid-proposed
repositories.

[Bug 307306] Re: upgrade to 2:1.2.99.2-0ubuntu1 makes session utterly slow

2009-01-27 Thread Max Bowsher
Some additional information on my problems reported in comment 33:
(which, to recap, are that gnome-power-manager still stimulates Xorg
into using excessive CPU with the patches applied, but not as excessive
as without them, and that the CPU usage stops after a while)

I turned off autostart of g-p-m in gnome-session-properties and instead
ran it manually as 'gnome-power-manager --no-daemon --verbose' so that I
could capture its logging. I am attaching the result. Of particular
relevance, note that in the logs there is a gap of 2 minutes 26 seconds
in the log timestamps at line 86 of the file - it is during this
interval that the CPU usage is occurring. If the log output is anything
to judge by, it looks like g-p-m may be blocked waiting on Xorg during
this time. Once this situation unblocks, a HUGE quantity of various
gpm_brightness_xrandr_* calls are logged.

[Bug 322154] [NEW] 1*1,6=16

2009-01-27 Thread Michael.Heimann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

As the summary sais, it's ignoring the comma. I tried to use a dot as a
seperator but it correctly uses a comma.

*Might* be a problem that in Germany you use a dot to seperate thousands
etc. and a comma to write decimal numbers...

nevertheless - it's useless in the way it's now!!!

[Bug 322153] [NEW] Evolution 2.24.3 hangs while fetching email

2009-01-27 Thread bhoth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Binary package hint: evolution

Running on Ubuntu 8.10 with 2GB of memory, an Intel 2.13 GHz Dual
processor, and a 1TB hard disk that is 90% available. Evolution version
2.24.3

I have been using the Evolution program without a single problem for a
few weeks. Today, the application started crashing while retrieving
email (i.e., while the status bar displays "Fetching mail.") At the
beginning, I could often attempt to close the program and would receive
the option for Force Quit. Most recently, that stopped working and I had
to start manually ending the process.

I have restarted Ubuntu a few times and, of course, Evolution. I'm not
sure what else to try.

I really like this program and feel that it is most similar to MS
Outlook. I want it to work!

The package is installed via the Synaptic package manager.

[Bug 192629] Re: "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?" on NTFS / VFAT partitions

2009-01-27 Thread YannUbuntu
no decision taken for this bug? someone working on it?
i see no activity on http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=514697 :-(

i think "importance" should be increased: this bug is a pain for new
Linux users (who generally use a Win/Linux dualboot for a soft
transition, with FAT or NTFS partition for Win/Linux doc exchange), as
it prevents from deleting songs in Rhythmbox, pictures in EOG, files in
Nautilus...

Please warn them of the security problem (with an option for more
security if you want) but don't make their "transition to Linux" a pain!

One more point: as far as i remember, there wasn't this bug in Gutsy.
Can someone confirm?

This is my scenario:

- samba server ubuntu 8.10 x6_64

The credentials used by rhythmbox are stored in the gnome keyring,
properly unlocked.

Hope this helps tracking down the source of the problem.

[Bug 281633] Re: Can't burn/erase cd using brasero

2009-01-27 Thread Derek White
I am getting the same problem on my Sony DVD drive (DRU-830A) using
Brasero.

Downloaded a mp3 for a friend: http://podcast.kingschurchjax.com/012509samw.mp3
Opened Brasero, clicked the button to start an Audio CD
Dragged the mp3 from my desktop to the Brasero window and dropped it
After a minute or two (its a big mp3 and I'm on a 1.5Ghz) the info loaded, and
I changed the title/artist
Put in an 80 minute CD, canceled Ubuntu's blank CD auto-run dialog
Brasero automatically selected the CD I inserted
Clicked the Burn button, then clicked Properties
At this point, I see my weird speed listings: Max speed, 31.9 x (CD), 23.9 x
(CD), 16.0 x (CD), 8.0 x (CD), 8.0 x (CD)

[ A tiny tangent. ]
Yup, that's two 8.0x speed settings. (Why? Another bug? Been like that forever,
since my first Ubuntu: 7.10.)

Selected 16.0 x (CD) [As I said, I have a slower system - it can't keep up with
24x (or 23.9 x - stupid Brasero) and definitely not 32x]
Burn directly, and burnproof both checked
Simulate is grayed out
Eject is checked
Temp files set to /tmp with 3.9GB free-space
Clicked OK to start the burn process

Brasero took awhile (again) to prepare, then started burning it.
It got to roughly 7%, then started fixating the drive for some reason, like it
would do when finished burning.
The dialog never went away. After about 5 minutes the graphics on the dialog
would not redraw after minimize/restore and I clicked X, waited for it to not
respond, and let Ubuntu stop it.

I removed the CD, it was partially burnt, Ubuntu loaded it up as an
audio-cd with Japanese/Chinese text, lol, now part of my Tesla coil
collection. I restarted Brasero, and started over using the same process
detailed above, except I choose the top-most 8.0 x (CD) setting for the
speed and unchecked burn directly without saving. When I hit OK to start
the burn, I immediately got the "Session error : the drive can't be
locked (ongoing burning process) (brasero_burn_record burn.c:2524)"
error.

I closed down Brasero, checked System Monitor for Brasero, cdrecord,
anything out of the ordinary. The only thing I found was that gvfsd-burn
was open and using a third of a MB of memory; gvfsd-http was also open
using half a MB, even with firefox closed down after dl'ing the mp3.

[ Questions about bug. ]
It seems like gvfs has been going through major updates lately, could
gvfs-backends (which includes -burn) be causing this? Or is -burn only used
with nautilus...

Anyways, that's where I am. I am sure a reboot would fix this, but there
should be no reason for that.

My drive can be opened, closed, mounted, ejected, etc. all OK, why does Brasero
think it's in use?
What does Brasero use to lock the drive for burning?
How can I reverse it, since the force quit of Brasero left it there?
Can this be done automatically when Brasero starts? (i.e. - check to see if
drive is REALLY in use?)

[ Other thoughts. ]
Finally, if anyone can help me, why did Brasero start fixating after 7%?
Shouldn't burnproof have prevented a buffer under-run?

P.S. - 'Places' > 'CD/DVD Creator' > Add a file...or more > 'Write to
Disc' lists 37.6x, 28.2x, 18.8x, & 9.4x as my speeds. Why is everything
different? My drive really can't do all this...shouldn't it be
calculated the same way in all programs across the board?
Inconsistencies should not be this apparent for the same drive.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ok I'm a programmer.

My development platform is VS2005.NET, so I'm new with Linux so I really
thanks for help before anything.

I made a web system where I convert my gridview in PDF, I am trying to
check why when I open my document with de viewer documents I cannot
change the default size paper.

Almost always appears in A4 format, but I need Letter, and It's supposed
to be my default inside my development.

And by these reason My "default" size is change for the viewer
documents, could you be so able to let me know the way to perform this,
please.

so my basic question is ...

How can I change the size default of the viewer documents at
Ubuntu??

Thanks any way.

[Bug 315782] Re: Change of capitalization in filenames on FAT32

2009-01-27 Thread hggdh
This has been discussed on the coreutils mailing list some time ago:

- no real conclusion, except that there was an agreement that there were
doubts on the behaviour;

where the suggestion is to do a two-way mv: mv a B; mv B A;

Also, given that we currently have a block on the kernel (on comment 8
above), I really do not see much sense on adding an upstream task for
coreutis; in fact, I see no reason for upstream tasks that are not
linked to an upstream bug (or whatever). Back to the problem, even if
'mv' supported it right now, the kernel issue would still block it.

Personally, I would rather have it work, though.

[Bug 322111] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon xrandr plugin gets wrong resolution on external monitor

2009-01-27 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Using gnome-settings-daemon to activate my external monitor (using the
XF86Display (Fn+F7) key on my thinkpad, which I've configured as the
binding in /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings/xrandr), in jaunty

[Bug 292813] Re: RDP viewer forgets window size after fullscreen session

2009-01-27 Thread Peter D'Hoye
Good point. I tried compiz and metacity, and this only seems to happen in
compiz.
I will add that I use the binary nvidia driver though I'm not convinced this is
the cause.

to reproduce:

1. start a session, have the window about half the height and width of your
display
2. switch to fullscreen (press F11)
3. switch back (press F11 again)

observe that the window is no longer half the height and width of the
display, but something seemingly random. Sometimes the window is moved
partly off-screen, making it impossible to close by clicking the [x]
button.

Please let me know if you need more input or even screenshots to
illustrate the bug.
