[Bug 329638] Re: Document Viewer 2.24.1 closes viewing .pdf-files larger than 20 MB

2009-02-15 Thread Hew McLachlan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 329650] [NEW] Auto mounted CD should always have an Explore option. Right click menu should also have a Properties item.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

A friend recently gave me a DVD which contained a couple of VOBs of his
band playing gigs from which he wanted me extract a couple of songs for
YouTube.

So I insert the DVD into my Linux machine, it was auto mounted, and an
icon appears on the GNOME panel with the options of Play and Eject
$DVD_LABEL. Sadly neither of these options are of use as I want to
know where the DVD is mounted so I can browse it.

Additionally when I right click on the icon in the panel the menu
doesn't contain a Properties item which would allow me to see where
the DVD has been mounted.

I therefore have *no clue whatsoever* where the item has been mounted or
how to get to it so I can access the files it contains (in reality I
know that DVDs are mounted in /media so I was able to find the files
but the GNOME desktop gives me no idea where the DVD had been mounted)

I therefore propose two things.

Firstly that the menu shown against all removable media (anything that
causes an icon to be added to the panel) should always have an option
for Explore on it. No exceptions. When this option is selected the
item in question should be explored. If necessary the volume should
also be transparently automounted first.

Secondly it should be a standard that everything visible to the user as
an icon should have a Properties item available on it's right click
menu that will always give basic information about the object. i.e.
similar to the item available when you right click an item in the right
hand pane of a Nautilus Window (note this is only on the right hand
pane, again this functionality is missing from items in the left hand
Nautilus panes)

In Windows Explorer you have the option to double click an object
representing removable media which will launch the default action for
the item (for DVDs this is to play them with the default media player)
However there is always an Explore action available which, for users
like me, is regularly used (In fact I never double click media icons as,
even though I run with it switched off, this could also cause the items
autoplay rubbish to be run infecting my machine with a Sony rootkit
etc. etc.).

Again in Windows when you right click almost any icon (or list view
item) you can get a properties window which will give you basic
information about the item. Invariably the General tab contains the
location of the item in the file system which is invaluable.

Without this functionality GNOME is severly lacking when compared to
Windows.

[Bug 329655] [NEW] Launchpad bug reporting should have a preview function.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Firstly I'm sorry to raise this against nautilus but there is no
option to raise bugs against Launchpad itself, I couldn't raise a bug
against any package that contained the word Launchpad (despite them
being offered in the Choose dialogue) and I couldn't find anywhere
else to raise the such a bug (Googling for how to do this simply gives
thousands of hits on how to use Launchpad to raise bugs against various
products) .

This feature request therefore relates to the behaviour of page:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug#form-start

When using launchpad to report a bug it would be nice to have a
preview function which would allow me to see the bug report as it will
look when posted. That way I might catch my spelling and grammar errors
before a bug is posted (it's far easier to read text on a page as
opposed to in an edit box)

This function should work similarly to the preview function used in many
bulletin boards (PHPBB) and Slashdot, etc. where an edit box is always
presented with a submit and preview button. In fact it's not a pain
to be always forced to preview your post at least once as I, for one,
don't seem able to spot mistakes in an edit control as easily as I can
when I'm reading a page (probably because my brain is in edit rather
than read mode :)

I have the same problem. If I update to 8.10 then the problem is fixed.
But then I have a problem with Mythtv volume control. So at the moment I

To fix my problem I start with a new install.
Then
sudo umount /home/yourhome/.gvfs
sudo rmdir /home/yourhome/.gvfs
sudo apt-get remove gvfs-fuse

Restart and then update your system and add your other applications

[Bug 58205] Re: Should provide Right-Click-Format...

2009-02-15 Thread Mikko Saarinen
I agree that this is a bug and was indeed going to write a bug report
myself but came across this one. Thanks Paul :)

Paul has mentioned all the places where an average user would search for
this task, but here is what should also be taken into account:

1. Formatting an usb stick should NOT request admin priviledges.
- In a business environment, this should be a task that a user can do himself,
without contacting the support personnel (this is why I had to take my
workplace's usb stick home to be formatted, as our office's Windows XP did not
let me do it...).

2. There should be a choice for which file system to use.
- This should default to the one already residing on the stick for a fast
re-format, but should the user need to, there would be an options-button for a
full list of file systems to use.

Thanks,
Mikko

With Totem if a play a video or i'm playing a song with visual effects
shadows are not correct when over the video. They are like a solid black

[Bug 328378] Re: gnome-panel doesn't respond

2009-02-15 Thread Martijn van de Streek
That backtrace is still not OK, but I've been trying for almost an hour,
and I can't seem to get a good one either.

I think the problem is either with threading (in the panel itself, or
libedataserver1.2-11) or the gnome-keyring calls it does (that's where
most traces end up). I keep seeing connection refused calls to the
g-k-d socket. The environment variables don't match the real gnome-
keyring PID for some reason.

[Bug 329429] Re: GIMP Print Size several millimetres off

2009-02-15 Thread Tomas Ingo
Thanks!

I tried downloading GIMP 2.6.2 from getdeb, but it refused to install.
gimp-data conflicts with gimp-python, and ubuntu-desktop is dependent of
gimp-python. In other words I have to remove ubuntu-desktop in order to
install gimp-data. I searched the Ubuntu Forums and some people said
that removing ubuntu-desktop shoud be fine, so I guess I can do so
safely unless I want to make a distro upgrade in the future? I prefer
clean installs, so that's okay with me as long as removing ubuntu-
desktop doesn't give me any other troubles.

Any thoughts? I know this isn't the right place to discuss this, but if
you know what to do about this ubuntu-desktop package, then please let
me know. Just tell me if I dare to remove or not so I can proceed
without trembling hands :)

The description of ubuntu-desktop:

This package depends on all of the packages in the Ubuntu desktop system

It is also used to help ensure proper upgrades, so it is recommended that
it not be removed.

[Bug 237721] Re: Secure attention key

2009-02-15 Thread Fred
John McCabe-Dansted,
Alt-SysReq-K restarted my X.
It kind of worked, but in Windows it is more flexible because you can resume
sessions, and switch sessions I think, without killing all the sessions.
Also, it would be preferable if it used the same key combination as Windows,
since everyone knows that. Ctrl+Alt+Del is much easier to remember than
Alt-SysReq-K.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-02-15 Thread Uphaar Agrawalla
Perhaps an extra piece of info which may be useful - I've recently bought a
Western Digital Passport portable hard drive. The USB transfer rates with this
drive are good (7-10MB/s).
However the USB flash drive performs as described by others above. The speed
decreases after some 70-80 MB is copied and comes down to ~400KB/s.
Running an up-to-date Intrepid.

[Bug 306557] Re: won't open an http uri

2009-02-15 Thread Brian J. Murrell
So, I figured out what the cause of this is/was.

Totem fails to work properly if it cannot connect to a DBUS.

To reproduce my failure above, ssh to a remote machine and try to play
an http:// URI in Totem. It should fail.

Now try to do the same thing with dbus-launch:

$ dbus-launch bash -c totem http://...;

and it should work.

Should Totem really fail to play an http:// stream just because it
cannot connect to a DBUS?

close {presumably after failing to start and quitting similarly to

- solid colour.
+ manual launch below}).

If I launch nautilus from terminal I get this message:

expired, or the network connection was broken.

After the last message all starting file manager instances dissapear (or
rather, stops being spawned, and closes one by one until window-list is empty).
Whereupon they start spawning all over again, with exact same behaviour.

I've had odd things when the issue seemed to go away after I ran apt-get
upgrade (which added several packages, none of which directly nautilus-
related I think), and then after restart it only happened for ~10s after
login, and then after shutdown and start it's back to original

I've had comments suggesting it may be unrelated to nautilus itself.

Issue started after recent upgrade (~12 feb GMT)

Running Jaunty on vmware, fully upgraded as of now (13 feb GMT).

Still experiencing same problem, fully updated.

Wallpaper shows up randomly when the bug happens, i.e. it may or may not show
up whilst nautilus is erroring (but no icons).
Wallpaper always shows up along with icons when error stops.

Error usually stops at some random point after login, anything from 10
seconds to 2 hours according to experience.

[Bug 300017] [NEW] Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match

2009-02-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If you connect to a remote SFTP folder, the UID and GID is interpreted
using the local users and groups database. This makes the Create
Folder and Create Document options to be greyed out.

I'm aware of bugs like 229270 and 9252, but I am reporting this as a
separate issue because it is not the same to display ownerships than to
prevent the user from doing working.

If SFTP permissions are known to be misinterpreted, just don't make the
Create Folder / Create Document / Paste menu items availability depend
on those while the bug is being fixed.

I'm sure I do have correct permissions: if I log in to the SSH server
and cd to the path, creating the folder through the shell works.

[Bug 329810] [NEW] Display is un-dimmed when idle time sets in

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

uncheck Activate screensaver when computer is idle and check Dim
display when idle.

After 30 seconds of idle, my display is dimmed. But after 5 minutes,
it's un-dimmed again. My guess is, that it's because the screensaver

module following this

Thank you penguins :)

[Bug 315922] Re: 2.6.27-11 makes brightness not work [2.6.28-4.10 also affected]

2009-02-15 Thread Dana Goyette
For me on Jaunty, the 2.6.28-7-generic kernel has been fixed now -- it
seems they've reverted the don't use _BCM and _BCL patches. I'm not
sure about the Intrepid kernel, though. Also, this is not quite a
duplicate -- it's more of a fixing that one broke this one issue.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2009-02-15 Thread Andre Chudio
On a fresh installation, I have just removed the
/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-antialias.conf file
and the font appearance in gnome-terminal behaves correctly (hinting and
antialiasing )
In fact, the smoothing on small fonts is the main reason that hurts my eyes.
After deeper testing, I notice that the hinting setting in System -
Appearance Preferences - Details
does not affect the gnome-terminal.
So I suggest as other persons to remove all 10-* in /etc/fonts/conf.d

$ cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
$ sudo rm 10-*

I made my testing using the msttfonts (Verdana and Courrier New) and
liberation fonts (Sans and Mono) size 10

System - Appearance Preferences - Rendering = Monochrome

System - Appearance Preferences - Details - Resolution = 96dpi
System - Appearance Preferences - Details - Smoothing = None
System - Appearance Preferences - Details - Hinting = Full
System - Appearance Preferences - Details - SubPixelOrder = RGB ( not use
because Smoothing is None )

See the result in attachment.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2009-02-15 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I should have been more specific. Try Subpixel smoothing, full hinting
and a font of size 8 or smaller, then compare the results in the
terminal window with those in the Fonts tab of the Appearance
Preferences window. With or without the 10-* symlinks removed, the
result is that which I have attached earlier.

[Bug 25827] Re: Thumbnails for Openoffice.org documents

2009-02-15 Thread Michael Nagel
i dont think this is correctly filed against tracker.

the bug i am talking about is that you do not get thumbnails for odt
files in nautilus like you get for pdfs.

i do not know too much of the technical details about thumbnail
generation, but the only two programs that make sense to be responsible
for generating and displaying the thumbnails are nautilus itself (or a
plugin/addon) and the word processor (i.e. open office) (or a
plugin/addon).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.

The menu entries you are talking about, do they all show in the main
menu or in the menu editor (alacarte) only? If they only show in the
menu editor can you pick 1 of those duplicate entries, check their
properties (Properties button) and post them here?

Thanks!

[Bug 329881] [NEW] Weather applet uses defunct station for Berlin weather

Public bug reported:

When Berlin is selected as a location in Gnome's weather applet or clock

Tempelhof airport closed on Oct 30 last year, it's not very surprising
that the last weather report for that station is on that same day.

Up until fairly recently, the weather applet showed three choices for
Berlin - Tegel, Tempelhof, and Schoenefeld. Now it only shows one
choice, and just happens to be using the defunct Tempelhof weather
station. It was certainly a little surprising to see it reporting 4° C
for the last month or so, day and night, even when it was snowing
outside.

The next best station for Berlin would probably be Tegel, which is
station code EDDT.

[Bug 301201] Re: Won't play music after switching CDs

2009-02-15 Thread peterzay
I use 8.10 as a Live User on a stock HP m7747c desktop. I boot from the
DVD-ROM drive and try to play an audio CD from the CDRW drive. Ubuntu
recognizes the drive, the WAV files, and displays a musical JJ icon for
each file. Double clicking on the file launches RhythmBox but nothing
happens.
