[Bug 350772] [NEW] [Jaunty Beta] playing MMS / .ASX with totem needs manual install of codec package

2009-03-29 Thread Sander Jonkers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

On Jaunty Beta, Ubuntu will not automatically find the codes for MMS /
ASX content: errors will occur and content will not be played.

Workaround: manual install of package "Gstreamer plugins for mms,
wavpack, quicktime, ..." via Add/Remove.

Real solution: totem / Ubuntu should install automagically.

Long description

totem can not automatically play the MMS / ASX content
"http://www.omroep.nl/live/thema/nos_journaal24-bb.asx";.
FWIW: vlc does play this URL.

Ubuntu tries to find a codec, but fails:

"The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install
suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that
supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported."
After clicking on Search, I get the message:

"No packages with the requested plugins found
The requested plugins are:
Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol source"

I have enabled all software sources: main, universe, restricted,
multiverse.

Karaoke Modea (like rockbox) should be added, which does a pretty good
job of removing vocals from songs. It's an amazing thing to show off,

[Bug 350523] Re: Policy violation - Conflicts: nautilus-cd-burner

2009-03-29 Thread Savvas Radevic
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: brasero

Since no clear reason was added in the changelog, I believe that
"Conflicts: nautilus-cd-burner" was added due to this announcement:
  http://mail.gnome.org/archives/devel-announce-
  list/2009-January/msg6.html

Namely, brasero is replacing nautilus-cd-burner feature-wise, but no files
seem to be overwritten!
Using Conflicts in this situation is regarded as a policy violation and the
"Conflicts: nautilus-cd-burner" should be removed.
nautilus-cd-burner and brasero can co-exist until nautilus-cd-burner (in
universe repository?) is not supportable anymore.

- As ScottK has suggested in IRC, the nautilus-cd-burner/brasero
- replacement should be a rule issued for update-manager,

[Bug 349774] Re: cannot change background color on parts of panel

2009-03-29 Thread Thomas Heidrich
I got the same problem on three different machines. All three are normally
using the "Human" theme. The problem occurred on 27th after I have installed
the daily updates.
Switching to the "Human-Clearlooks" theme solved the problem for me either.
Please fix the "Human" theme. It's much better.

I've been following this guide:

As a newbie I'm not sure what to do to fix this or would it be just fine to
ignore it and continue by the guide.

[Bug 350849] [NEW] gnome-power-manager says hibernate failed

2009-03-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After hibernating my PC, at resume the system pop-up a notification message
that sayd "Problem in the pause (this issue doesn't happen every time so I have
not way to reproduce it). The computer failed the hibernation.." (my
message was in Italian, so I try to translate it). The syslog says:
gnome-power-manager: hibernate failed.
The strange thing is that resuming after hibernation seemed that went ok.

Tested with Ubuntu Hardy Heron and gnome-power-manager

FYI: hinting highly depends on the font you use and the dpi settings of
your screen. So, we will need font specific settings anyways.
For example: The DejaVu family contains instructions. Therefor you would
want to disable auto-hinting and set your hinting style to "full" for
this family. But with a higher dpi setting, for example 125 dpi, you
would want to disable hinting altogether. The same goes for bigger font
sizes (in point). We will try to deliver a good set of font specific
fontconfig settings for Karmic.

[Bug 350850] [NEW] Glchess (gnome-games) crashes on 3D mode

2009-03-29 Thread Christian Mackintosh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

The problem: When selecting "3D Chess view" from Glchess I'm directed to
install python-gtkglext1 and python-opengl. Upon doing so and restarting
glchess, if I select that option again then glchess crashes. Glchess
will continue to crash every time it's started unless either python-
gtkglext1 or python-opengl are removed, at which point it will give the
same message about needing one of the packages and revert to 2D view.

Expected behaviour: Python-gtkglext1 and python-opengl are installed,
user selects 3D Chess view, glchess switches to 3d view.

[Bug 350520] Re: nautilus crashes upon moving a file to a sftp:// location

2009-03-29 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 349850] Re: Autohinter should be enabled by default in Jaunty to avoid font rendering inconsistencies

2009-03-29 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Thanks for the reply, Arne. It sounds very interesting. But I'm always
talking about the default Ubuntu font, i.e. the font Ubuntu uses when
you just installed it (or when you use the desktop CD as a Live CD). The
default font looks bad in full hinting style, but looks OK in slight
hinting. The autohinter solves that inconsistency, so this is why I
think setting autohinter enabled by default could be a good thing. It
will benefit many users (the vast majority of newcomers, for instance).

I'm using the default Ubuntu font and the dpi that Jaunty enables by
default for my 19" LCD monitor: 96 dpi, for a 1280x1024 screen
resolution.

[Bug 307751] Re: support comicbook formats: cb7, cba, cbt...

2009-03-29 Thread Florent V.
Hello,

Testing on Jaunty beta, with those packages installed:
evince 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
libevdocument1 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
libevview1 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
lzma 4.43-14ubuntu1
p7zip 4.58~dfsg.1-1
p7zip-full 4.58~dfsg.1-1

I archived a folder in different formats using the contextual menu entry in
Nautilus, and the following formats:
- 7z
- cbz
- tar.7z
- tar.lzma
- zip
I renamed all the archives to a .cb7 extension, except the .cbz one, and the
.zip one that I renamed as .cbz.

Results with Evince:
- can't open 7z (error along the lines of "Archive file type 7-zip
(application/x-7z-compressed) is not supported");
- can't open cbz (same error);
- can't open tar.7z (same error);
- can't open tar.lzma (same error);
- CAN open zip.

Note: the CBZ file it could not open was recognized as application/x-7z-
compressed, not as a ZIP archive. This is a bug in Nautilus or the
application that the "Create an archive" context menu in Nautilus calls
(not sure how it works). A normal ZIP archive renamed with a .cbz
extension will be handled fine.

So if I want to create a CBZ archive (which will be recognized by all
comic book viewers on all platforms, including Evince and Comix on
Ubuntu), I need to stay clear of the cbz option in Nautilus, use zip
instead, then manually rename to .cbz. Maybe that should be a separate
bug report?

2009-03-29 Thread Timotheus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

1) Ubuntu 9.04 Beta (x86)
2) Version from installation DVD.
3) I just want to enter my login/password and log in.
4) Frozen logon screen with some graphical glitches.

Machine configuration:

 - AMD Athlon XP 2500+
 - 1.5 GB of DDR RAM
 - ATI Radeon HD 3650 512mb GDDR2 (AGP Version)

What have I tried to do:

   ++
   logged in
   $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
   [OK]
   $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
   [OK]

result: Same frozen logon screen.

P.S.
Gdm could not start in live session either. I used text mode installation. And

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 329146] Re: nautilus unable to start on login

2009-03-29 Thread arand
Daisuke_Ido: Could you have a look at your dmesg and see if it is
libbrasero that causes things in your case, you can use the command:

cat /var/log/messages | grep nautilus

And see if you also get strings like:
[ 42.636631] nautilus[3660]: segfault at 98a0008 ip b5d9755d sp b5d85fc0 error
4 in libbrasero-media.so.0.1.1[b5d87000+1e000]

If not it may be a different issue. Or it may be that the fundamental
error isn't in brasero after all...

This is NOT a definite indication, since it has to go on for a while
before you see a few crashes (only very few of the hundreds of nautilus
apps do crash and generate this message, and depending on the case maybe
none will crash like this?)

[Bug 350955] [NEW] cpufreq-applet: cpu scaling starts always with "performance" should be "ondemand"

2009-03-29 Thread Robert Entner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

On Intrepid the cpu frequency scaling was set to "ondemand" after
reboot. In Janty beta it is now "performance". Is this on purpose? Then
it should at least respect my last setting before shutdown.

On multi-core I have to change the scaling on each cpu separately. On
Intrepid changing CPU0 to "ondemand" changed the behavior on both -
which I find more reasonable.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: gnome-applets 2.26.0-0ubuntu4

Re: [Bug 349994] Re: No preset radio source

2009-03-29 Thread ellery
Hi Sebastien

I just tried a guest session, within which rhythymbox initially works fine
with the radio sources. Randomly I picked one radio station, the RB did not
respond after forced quiting the program and restarted, no resources
showed up.

Therefore, it probably like you said, a "local installation issue". But how
can I fix it? Thanks.
