[Bug 355480] [NEW] [LENOVO 0768BXG] Brightness does not increase properly

2009-04-05 Thread Neil Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Jaunty Beta.

The laptop system is receiving input from the Brightness controls on
this laptop (Fn + F10 and Fn + F11), but the power manager moves the
brightness slider up and down fairly randomly and the screen merely
flickers. This is with AC power connected and disconnected.

If I kill the power manager then the brightness controls work correctly
(although I don't get a sexy translucent graphic on screen :)

same issue for me: automatic login works, but ctrl-alt-backspace
restarts X to an "authentication failure" error on the gdm login screen
preventing progress. The system boots into the desktop fine.

Same critical error in syslog.

I had added:

@include common-pamkeyring

to /etc/pam.d/gdm

about to try with this commented out.

2009-04-05 Thread Sebastien Bacher
there is no need to add "+1" useless comments there, that doesn't bring
any value to the bug, the issue is a GNOME one discuss it on the GNOME
bug if you are constructive comments to add, the setting is low because
the google calendar option in evolution is only a calendar feature and
never really worked correctly, the setting could be change but that will
not make it work automatically without work there

I have just experienced exactly the same issue as the op. Started up

up jumped two apport windows, one for Evolution and one for Stellarium.
Neither of theses apps had been started manually and neither are in my
'start up' list.

I'm running AMD64, Jaunty (as updated a few minutes ago from main
server). nspluginwrapper is NOT installed. flashplugin-nonfree is NOT
installed (I am using libflashplayer.so). nvidia drivers are NOT

[Bug 355546] [NEW] Brightness down key doesn't work properly on dell mini (Jaunty Beta)

2009-04-05 Thread anselm.reisner
Public bug reported:

Version of Ubuntu: jaunty (Beta)
Version of gnome-power-manager: 2.24.2-2ubuntu7
Hardware: Dell Inspiron mini 9
Last known working version: Intrepid

When I hit the brightness down key it reacts strangely. Sometimes the
brightness is reduced as expected but often brightness remains the same or is
increased. Especially if the brightness is already quite low. When I kill
gnome-power-manager I can adjust the brightness properly. Of course without
visual indication.
The attachment is the output of (I hit brightness down 10 times) :
gnome-power-manager --no-daemon --verbose > verbose-mode-output.txt

output of xev after I killed gnome-power-manager (I hit the key only once):
keycode 232 = (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), state = 0x0

Probably the google calendae feature only wraps the caldav setting, see here:

did not have time to try it, but on another installation of

2009-04-05 Thread Gerhard
First of all in my opinion it's not an useless comment. It is quite
obvious that for Matthijs, Askar and for me this is a important bug.
And therefor I think the importance should be higher then low. This
calendar feature worked very well in Intrepid and in Fedora 10.

And if the importance of a ubuntu bug doesn't have any influence what is
this option for?

2009-04-05 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
@Sebastien:

I've exactly the same problem. It seems to be a compiz issue, because
the problem only appears when I have the desktop effects enabled. The
problem is reproducible even with a newly created user, so I haven't got
any custom settings apart from the default ones.

I attach an screenshot to illustrate the problem. You can see that the
calendar shows behind the active window (the gnome-terminal), but it
shows in front of the firefox window.

[Bug 355565] [NEW] Very poor performance when extracting audio CDs

2009-04-05 Thread Charlie Halford
Public bug reported:

1) Release: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Beta

2) apt-cache policy rhythmbox: 0.12.0-0ubuntu2

3) When extracting audio CDs in other operating systems on the same
computer, the conversion process takes under 5 minutes, and allows me
full use of my computer as the process takes place.

4) When extracting an audio CD in rhythmbox, the process took well over
5 minutes, and took a large amount of CPU, leaving my computer very
unusable. Attempts to play other music within rhythmbox while the
extraction was taking place results in stuttering playback.

While the extraction process is a computationally expensive operation,
it should NOT leave the system in an unusable state.

2009-04-05 Thread david_kt
Siegfried,
Thank you for your feedback and you are right. After I downgrade to wget
1.10.2, it works. So I edited the script as follow:

wget -nd -c --read-timeout=300 --retry-connrefused --header "Accept-
Encoding: gzip,deflate" http://www.tartet.com/target_file 2>&1 | sed -u
's/.*\ \([0-9]\+%\)\ /\1\n# Downloading /' | zenity --progress --auto-
close --title="Downloading File..."

The new script works with both wget 1.10.2 and the new one (wget 1.11.4).
Closing this bug.

[Bug 355580] [NEW] Screensaver not disabled when running XBMC

2009-04-05 Thread Turniphead
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I'm running a fresh install of Jaunty with all updates as of 20090404
and running XBMC from SVN repository

When watching a video using xbmc the screensaver kicks in at the time
set in the screensaver preferences. This was not the case with intrepid.
I would have expected the screensaver to remain off while running this
app as it contains its own screensaver.

I reported it to the XBMC dev team but they are of the opinion that it
is out of their reach. It may not be the most important bug, but it's
one of the very few I have come across so far.

My quick fix was to make a custom app launcher, which runs a script
disabling the screensaver, starting xbmc then re-enabling it on exit.
Seems to work.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are

you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 355602] [NEW] Rhythmbox fails to load after DBus object creation

2009-04-05 Thread Charlie Halford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1) Release: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Beta

2) Rhythmbox 0.12.0

3) Expected: Rhythmbox should load correctly.

4) Actual: After a day of using Rhythmbox on Jaunty, I closed the
program, wanting to report another bug with it's plugin detection
continually asking for plugins it couldn't find. I ran the command
rhythmbox --debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt, but Rhythmbox did not load.
Looking at the attached debug file, all I can see at the end is the text
"going to create DBus object", then "THE END". Attempting to launch
Rhythmbox through the menu now fails as well.

The only different thing I did before the last close down was enable the
"Watch folder for new files" option in preferences.

[Bug 355627] [NEW] Display brightness dim/restore not consistent on UNR

2009-04-05 Thread mangaranga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Starting from AC, unplug the power cable. The display is dimmed to 50%
of the initial level as expected. Change the display brightness. Restore
the AC power. The display brightness level is not restored. Switching
now again to battery mode will further decrease the luminosity to 25% of
the starting value (50% of current level).

Having always a 50% decrease of the brightness from then current value when
switching to battery is sometimes leading to brightness levels too low. For
example if I have the AC power plugged in but I use a 50% brightness because
the environment light is low, turning off AC will lead to a brightness of 25%
which is too low to be able too see anything
on the screen (and to easily find the keys to turn up the brightness).

Perhaps would be better when switching to save the current level and
restore to it rather than to a percentage from the current one. For the
first switch the user can provide the percentages from the maximum
brightness to be used via Power Management Preferences panel. For the
AC mode the user can already set the default display brightness but for
the battery mode the user can only choose to dim it (looks to be 50%
from current level).

My system details:

Well, if I've not misread the specification, the problem is that the
icon must be shown even if the plugged device is not mass storage. So
this is also valid for webcams and others.
The conclusion is for me that gvfs/nautilus should not be touched.

Maybe hal?

[Bug 355636] [NEW] Mahjongg: Wrong behaviour of buttons "Pause" and "Resume"

2009-04-05 Thread Tiefflieger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

See Screencast: When I start Mahjongg, both buttons "Pause" and "Resume" (in my
german version, they are called "Pause" and "Fortsetzen") are displayed, resume
is not greyed out.
When I start a new game, the appearance is like I think it's supposed to be:
Only the Pause button is visible, but greyed out.

Furthermore, the size for the first 3 Buttons (ie "New", "Restart" and
"Pause" or "Resume") in the button bar seems to change when I pause /
resume a game, which is needless and a little ugly in my eyes.

[Bug 341141] Re: Baobab reports incorrect sizes

2009-04-05 Thread JohnLM
OK I did a bit more tests.
I didn't look at the actual code yet, but I grabbed three gnome-utils tarballs
from gnome.org and built them.
So I built them on my already mentioned Interpid box within home folder (so I
don't break preexisting gnome-utils).
Then run both compiled and repository versions side by side to see what they do.
Results:
2.20.0.1 does everything right!!!
2.24.1 behaves exactly as baobab from repository package.
2.26.0 (currently upstream) does exactly the same thing as 2.24.1

What I could learn that bug is indeed within gnome-utils package, cause I built
all of them against the same developer libraries.
I also added three screenshots to see how it looks on screen.

Well for those affected by this bug... my current recommendation would
be to revert to 2.20.0.1 (simply install Hardy's package or compile from
source).

[Bug 341389] Re: gnome-open keeps re-running itself if set as default opening application

2009-04-05 Thread Simon Woolf
Confirmed. I've just been hit by this myself (on Intrepid).

It took about half an hour to work out that it was gnome-open, because
neither top, nor htop, nor gnome-system-monitor were any use at all.
All three showed 100% total CPU usage, but none showed what was using
it: adding up the CPU totals for all processes usually came to about
10%. gnome-open, on recausing the problem and checking now, was right
at the bottom, shown using up no CPU whatsoever.

I only finally worked out that it was gnome-open using atop: using the
'c' (show command line) option showed a large number of ""
lines. The brackets indicate that the process "finished during the last
interval" apparently: it was restarting itself over and over, but only
one copy was ever running at one time; hence why top and htop only
showed one.

So how did this happen? At some point, I think I set Opera to display
shell scripts with "gnome-open", in the belief that this would just
cause it to open them with Gnome's default handler (which at the time
was gedit). Apparently that must have caused gnome-open to be set as
the default file handler for scripts.

[Bug 155438] Re: Compiz - workspace switcher shrinks and workspaces do not work corectly

2009-04-05 Thread Maykel Moya
I fixed the problem setting
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops to the current
number of desktop I have. It is has value of 1 I still have 8 desktops
but the workspace switcher applet use only the top half of its height.
After setting number_of_desktops to 8 the applet uses its full height.

Regards,
maykel

[Bug 254309] Re: UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy

2009-04-05 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Martin, is this still an issue for you? Try running lsusb with and
without the usb cable connected. Also, watch the output of dmesg while
connecting and disconnecting the usb cable.

Since your usb ports otherwise work fine, like you mentioned, it might
be your UPS that's broken (even if there's no driver for your ups, it
should at least be visible as an unsupported device in lsusb)

2009-04-05 Thread hurga
Its hard to catch this bug, since it occures randomly. I am just an user, not a
developer, i am happy to report bugs, but its asked a bitch much to constantly
run the gdb when i should do work on my computer.
Still the Problem exists..
