I have normal visual effects (and I might have changed some minor things in ccsm). In my case, the terminal was on the upper left side of the screen, with no title bar. The title bar appeared e.g. if I moved the terminal to another workspace. I cannot test it nor give you a screenshot at the moment because my compiz fell back to metacity because of a critical bug. I have been frustrated by this problem for a long time through several different Ubuntu releases... I run Ubuntu as a virtual machine and switching from fullscreen to windowed mode produces this behavior often... The trouble is that this behavior can occur with a reboot or a simple update-manager update... I have coded up my own script to restore a default panel layout... I do believe this needs to be addressed in Karmic ... preferably with little or no user intervention... Hi Sebastien. I click 'Places' in the top panel, followed by 'Network' from the dropdown menu and my 3 currently connected machines appear in the file browser window. I am working on machine 1 (Ubuntu 8.04), so I double click the icon for machine 3 (Ubuntu 8.04) and the shares on that machine appear in the browser window. If I repeat the operation but double click the icon for machine 2 (Win XP) then the rotating symbol appears briefly and then disappears again and the file browser window is blank, ie the shares on the XP machine are not displayed. If I double click the icon for my own machine the shares are displayed fine. I can repeat this from machine 3 and the results are the same in that I can see the shares on the 2 Ubuntu machines (1 and 3), but again not the shares on the XP machine 2. If I click 'My Network Places' on the XP machine, all shares on all 3 machines are displayed fine. Just for the record, the removal of Wl,--as-needed is also required, otherwise the daemon crashes when it loads libsexy. The reason seems to be that libsexy is not mapped into memory from the daemon. So when the theme engine module is loaded it maps libsexy and registers with the gobject system. Now when the engine changes the module is unloaded and a new one is loaded. This contains also libsexy but mapped to a different adress. It seems that this confuses the gobject system and the crash happens.
