[Bug 367138] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_region_copy()

2009-05-04 Thread jeff3211
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evince

I'm sorry this is my first bug report, and my first use of LiveCD ubuntu
9.04. It may not be a valid bug, but I am incompetent to determine
validity. I was reading the installation documentation for win4lin pro
and scrolling with the scroll wheel on my logitech VX revolution
wireless mouse when the app suddenly closed. I am using a pentium 4
prescott processor, ECS mother board with 1 Gb RAM and I am loaded from
LiveCD with my Ubuntu 9.04 distro. I have not checked the hash, and my
machine has been buggy lately, I have either a faulty RAM chip or a
failing Motherboard, so my machine may be the source of the bug. I
intend to build a new 64 bit machine when parts arrive Monday and I was
researching information for my new build to migrate away from Windows,
so you may find this bug report worthy of an early death! However if you
decide to investigate further, I will be happy to answer any questions
to the best of my ability. The application shows these details from the
  drop-down help menu about...Document Viewer 2.26.0 Using poppler 0.10.5
(cairo) you probably know the rest of the details about this program. I
was reading a pdf document from the win4lin pro website which was the
user's guide. I also had several windows open along with my firefox
browser. I had also clicked on the win4linISO file just before the
user's guide disappeared. I was scrolling up in the document to an
earlier page when the window simply closed. I hope the automated bug
reporter has properly selected the appropriate source package because
most of the details in your instructions are still over my head!

+ update
+ As of 2009-05-05 I am unable to recreate this crash. I have downloaded the
pkg for valgrind debugging memory issues and though I'm a newbie I figured out
how to launch the necessary program from within the valgrind program. There is
a difference in system properties, however... I had already disassembled this
computer and built another one using some of it's components. I pirated the DVD
drive, the EIDE interface cable and the power supply for use in the new build.
I installed different components in the suspect computer to recreate the crash.
In addition, the system hasn't been on a comparable period of time as of yet. I
will wait until late tomorrow night and try to recreate the crash again after
the unit has sufficiently heated up to a comparable temperature. If I am still
unable to recreate the crash it appears probable that it may have been hardware
related and not a valid complaint against the OS. The new computer which
utilized the pirated hardware has operated flawlessly to date. I will update
immediately if the issue returns, or if it appears with the new unit.

[Bug 357204] Re: mouse sensitivity has no effect in Jaunty Beta

2009-05-04 Thread Pelládi Gábor
This is always the case for me on an Asus EEE 901. Touchpad sensitivity is very
slow, and the sensitivity slider (System->Preferences->Mouse) does nothing. The
acceleration slider works, though, but it is not what I want.
Is there an other way to adjust sensitivity, as a workaround for this bug?

[Bug 372043] [NEW] Can't change name of default task list

2009-05-04 Thread Shahar Or
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Dear friends,

1. Open evolution.
2. Go to tasks.
3. Change the name of the default task list (the first one, which was created
automatically)
4. Quit evolution.
5. Open evolution.

The task list's name has been reverted to it's original name.

I think it should be expected that the name will still be what the user
has written.

Many blessings.

I agree that an association with a simple script which checks for the
execute bit sounds like a good idea. How do you deal with the race
condition when the file is changed after the executable bit is
checked, and before the file would be executed?

The special execute bit is a feature: random files downloaded from the
Internet have to be granted the execute privilege, explicitly, before
they can execute, and do any damage. Furthermore, there is a
perfectly valid open operation, which is opening the JAR with the
Archive Manager. Executing is accessible via the context menu.

Jan.

[Bug 371759] Re: Super zoom out on use of index

2009-05-04 Thread Bob Appleyard
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evince

This looks like it's a regression of #49340, but it could be a different
bug. Given the example pdf on Jaunty, evince will zoom out to ridiculous
levels (claiming it to be 50%) every time one clicks on the index.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Open the provided pdf.
+ 2. Arrange it so that the index is visible in the side pane (selecting it
from the relevant drop-down box).
+ 3. Click any of the items in the index.
+
+ The desired outcome is that it remains at the level of zoom. The
+ observed outcome here is that evince zooms out enormously.
+
+ I don't know how many documents are affected by this. I'll try checking
+ out some of the attached files in #49340

My proposal here is to do the same thing I'm experimenting with for

[Bug 371959] Re: Evolution puts notifications outside the notification area

2009-05-04 Thread Chris Coulson
That icon is actually the indicator-applet. Evolution has no control
over the position of that, and because it is a panel applet by design,
it won't appear in the notification area. You can drag the applet
anywhere you like with the mouse though.

[Bug 371958] [NEW] Workspace Switcher 'shakes' when switching workspaces under compiz

2009-05-04 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have 4 horizontal workspaces and I have compiz activated, when I
switch to the next workspace the miniview of the WorkspaceSwichter
applet 'shakes' or flicks during the animation, which is kind of
irritating (Being using workspace since twm/fvwm era, so it looks like
something is not working right...).

If I disable 'desktop effects', the windows in the miniview
representation keep in their place as expected. I know it's not a
serious bug, but is kind of annoying to see moving things out of their
place.

I'm attaching an small video while I'm pressing CLTR+ALT+(LEFT/RIGHT
arrows).

Thanks,

[Bug 371959] [NEW] Evolution puts notifications outside the notification area

2009-05-04 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Evolution in Ubuntu 9.04 puts it's notification icon - the little
envelope - in the user's area of the panel, instead of in the
notification area where it belongs.

See screenshot below - the vertical line is the lefthand edge of the
notification area. Left of there is my panel - so what is Evo doing
displacing my panel icons with it's notification icons?

Re: [Bug 371086] Re: USB Thumb Drive Mounts but is inaccessible

2009-05-04 Thread Larry M
Hello Sebastien,

Here's what I attempted. I also tried another type of thumb drive with
the same results. And yes, I did try a command line to view the
contents via ls and the results were null. The thumb drives were
mounted but not showing any content.

I was having some other minor issues and I wasn't overly happy with the
new installation. So, I sanitized the disk and did a complete
re-installation but this time I started from the live system rather than
a straight installation. The problem with the thumb drives is gone.
I'd like to say that I didn't do anything different but I've heard that
too many times over my career from users. There had to be something but
I can't figure it out in any manner what it might have been. Just out
of curiosity I'm going to start all over once again and go back through
the process that I did originally but starting the installation straight
from the CD rather than the live system. Also, in both instances, I did
go through the software updates and apply all outstanding updates. So
that shouldn't be part of the original issue.

I'll try to do the fresh installation before the end of the week and let
you know the results. I've got to believe that there is something that
I did that caused such an issue.

[Bug 371956] [NEW] doesn't show finish project

When I try burn a cd, the status goes fine in some point, after that point, it
start a percentage progressive, and never finish the project. If I wait a
several minutes and click in Cancel button, it show me a message "Done", and
the cd are ejected. The same error appear when I try eraser a cd in complete
mode. In faster mode it's work fine.
I think its because the several times to try burn or clean an cd, but will try
use K3B to verify if is not problem with my CD/DVD drive.

[Bug 23810] Re: Size of preference dialog too big

2009-05-04 Thread Caleb
Hi, I just noticed this issue on Jaunty. Many laptops, especially 13"
models, use 1280x800 screens. The dialog would fit in this resolution,
but with Ubuntu's default gnome-panel setup, the panels take up too much
vertical space. With the recent proliferation of netbooks, monitor sizes
are taking a turn backwards -- for instance, the Eee PC 1000 has a 10"
monitor with a resolution of 1024x600, onto which the dialog would
certainly not fit. It would be nice to see a lighter design for the Evo
preferences window to increase usability on small-screened systems and
to help reduce unnecessary screen real-estate usage.

[Bug 366963] Re: nautilus "open with" property no longer available for folders

2009-05-04 Thread Sam
Hi, just a follow up, to sort out and avoid misconceptions.
I came along finding users having the problem that places menu open with a
specific application, e.g. Totem, VLC, which wasn't expected, (especially after
a dist-upgrade).

Hence I think, this might be one reason for removing this tab, because making a
file to open with a certain app results in an entry in
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and has something to do with inodes.
For some it helped to remove the entry there, others open places -> computer to
right click on a folder to choose 'open with folder' again. On the other hand
users with Jaunty miss the tab now in case to correct misbehaviour.

It appears there are two separate scenarios. This command:
xdg-mime query default inode/directory
results in
nautilus-folder-handler.desktop
and here:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
is e.g. the entry
inode/directory=totem.desktop;nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;nautilus.desktop;

If my thoughts go the wrong path please correct me, thanks.
Though I asked myself, why I was never affected by this. It occurs I never
right click e.g. a music file to open it with a different app. I either double
click on the file or I open an app and choose file or directory from within the
app.
The question is/was how do users open their files and is it rational to have
many different choices, regarding the underlying concept.
##Note: I'm not familiar with correlations, rather were looking for a helpful
answer for someone else with all the mentioned issues.

Re: [Bug 371516] Re: Rhythmbox music status not shown by Pidgin

2009-05-04 Thread Peter Belew
It's a Pidgin plugin, actually. So the bug should probably be
transferred to Pidgin. A similar bug was reported on Pidgin under
8.04, but the music player was VLC. That person is upgrading to 9.04
now, and will update his bug report.

It was suggested that I report this directly to Pidgin developers, but
the bug report button on Pidgin reports to Launchpad, so I felt it was
appropriate to report my bug that way, and I don't know how to report
directly to Pidgin developers.

[Bug 371900] [NEW] gconf key disable_log_out does not work

2009-05-04 Thread Volker van Nek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hello,
I installed Ubuntu 9.04 (gnome-panel 1.2.26.0) on a kind of public computer
with just one user who is logged in by default and I don't want this user to be
able to log out, he only should be able to shut down.
I played around with some gconf keys and I observed that both the keys
/apps/panel/global/disable_lock_screen and /apps/panel/global/disable_log_out
 do not cause any effect.
The key /desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_lock_screen works as intended. So
there is this alternative to disable screen locks.
Is there a workaround which allows to disable logging out?
Thanks in advance
Volker van Nek
