[Bug 378891] [NEW] Resume from suspend/hibernate chooses when to function
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Of course, for now, it varies greatly between both desktop and laptop users of Ubuntu as to whether or not the Suspend/Hibernate buttons work. For me, however, I've found that my system is a little different from the existing bug reports, but I'm sure I'm not alone here. My system (HP DV6446us/2GHz AMD64 Turion Dual Core/2GB/nVidia GeForce 7150M/160GB/32-bit Ubuntu 8.04.2) used to always malfunction when suspending or resuming, however, now it seems like it chooses when to actually function. It, at first, seemed like it had to do with luck, but it seems that if I try to immediately resume the system, it malfunctions, if I leave it for 5 minutes or so, it functions correctly, but if I wait more than 10 minutes or so, it also malfunctions. I know that everyone is trying to fix this for good, but I believe that this information may come in useful for anyone trying to solve this bug, knowing that time does seem to be an issue, at least for me. Users of Ubuntu in general, and getting more and more specific until it reaches users of Ubuntu 8.04.2 with the same hardware I have can attempt to recreate this. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete -- Resume from suspend/hibernate chooses when to function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 183846] Re: google calendar source does not show all events
Oh, and I was wrong about "on the web" being the same as CalDAV. I just tried adding my google calendar using the CalDAV method described by Rich's link above, and it works quite nicely. Evo hung up a bit at first, but recovered on its own, I'm getting recurring events AND I can create events from Evo up to Google (with the right time and everything!) [Bug 183846] Re: google calendar source does not show all events
I'm on Ubuntu 9.04 + Evolution 2.26.1. Two days ago I wasn't getting any recurring events synced from my Google calendar. I tried adding as a Google calendar and as an "On The Web" calendar (is that caldav?) Neither was giving me recurring events. Today I was gonna add my two cents to this thread, when I looked at Evolution again and wha?? The recurring events are there! But only on the "On The Web" version of the google calendar. The "google" version of the google calendar still doesn't show any recurring events. And here's something else I realized that changed: Before, every time I fired up Evolution, it would prompt for my google calendar password, even though I always checked the "remember this password" box. Now it's not doing that anymore. I haven't run any updates in the last two days, so either Google is changing stuff, or.. here's another totally harebrained theory: this morning I needed to encrypt an unrelated text file, using Seahorse. To do so I had to create a new PGP key, because this is a fresh Ubuntu install. I don't see why this has anything to do with it, but I can't help but notice that... 1. I did something password/key related, and then a password/key related issue went away in Evolution. 2. The recurring events problem went away at (it seems) the same time as the password issue. So.. perhaps Evolution needs to log into the google account repeatedly for recurring events; and perhaps some sort of keyring issue is preventing that; and perhaps running seahorse (gnuPGP) for the first time "fixes" the keyring issue? As I said, harebrained. But it would explain a lot, like why such a serious bug is happening to only a few users, and generally not to programmers (who are most likely to be able to fix it AND most likely to have already touched their keyrings) hm. -- google calendar source does not show all events https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: "BadWindow" X error under Xvnc
The resolution not being configurable by the vnc client is expected I think. Xvnc and I assume vnc4server don't support xrandr so you can't change the resolution from what is configured on the server when the display is created. So I think that one is a limitation rather than a bug. You can make multiple virtual displays on the server, each at different resolutions to suit different client devices (netbook vs. laptop). [Bug 378849] [NEW] Epiphany browser lacks printing option to ignore scaling and shrink to fit page
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser After perhaps a couple dozen sheets of paper (caused by an ever-so- careless blind frenzy of print job queuing), I realized that my pages were not printing the way that they did in Firefox! I know, you'd think it was a different browser or something. Anyway ... The right-hand side of each document was being cut off, which was not good. I explored the print options for ways to get around this, but there was no landscape mode; only a scaling option with a percentage scale, which did not seem very useful since I didn't know exactly how much I would need to shrink my documents. There also was no option to "ignore scaling and shrink to fit page width," the way that there was in Firefox ... apparently, this option is what allowed those enormous tables to print out properly. An option like this might be very handy! It might almost make a good default, seeing as how the alternative is wasted paper ... or at least, it was for me. >.> ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: epiphany-browser 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: epiphany-browser Uname: Linux 2.6.27-7-generic x86_64 ** Affects: epiphany-browser (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug -- Epiphany browser lacks printing option to ignore scaling and shrink to fit page https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378849 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to epiphany-browser in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it. Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally, in the report please include: 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System -> About Ubuntu. 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by checking in Synaptic. 3) What happened and what you expected to happen. The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures . Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make your bug report much more complete. In > Ubuntu 9.04 this module still shows up, right? > > [81601.434729] usbcore: registered new interface driver libusual Oops, sorry, that's what I get for not checking the driver names more closely. libusual is mostly harmless; it's the mapping function that arbitrates between ub and usb-storage drivers. The USB low performance device driver is ub.ko, normally found in, kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko: % find /lib/modules -name ub.ko /lib/modules/2.6.27-9-generic/kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko You really, really, *really* want to avoid using the low performance USB driver at all costs. Fortunately at least with modern kernels libusual defaults to trying to prefer the usb-storage driver. I'm not sure of the time frame, but a while ago, some distributions were defaulting to using the ub driver, and *boy* was that a disaster. The ub driver is useful in embedded devices where you might not want to have the full USB stack (udev, hal, etc.), but I'm not sure why it anyone would want it to use it on a normal system Simon's observation is quite right, some flash devices are just slow. Note that "1x" flash devices will only write at 150k/s. A "16x" device will write at 2.4 MB/s. And this is assuming the filesystem doesn't get in the way. This is the speed rating used by Compact Flash or Secure Digital (CF or SD) cards. USB sticks generally don't have speed ratings at all, and depending on what you've purchased, they could be quite slow indeed. Note that with SD cards, sometimes the high speeds advertised (i.e., 150x) may not apply at all unless you have special hardware --- or sometimes the manufacturers are just lying. But given that there do exist "1x" flash devices that only write at 150k/s should be a warning that some flash devices Are Just Slow. Hence my request that people who are really interested in debugging this should use USB hard drives, and not USB flash devices --- there's no way for us on the other side to know whether you are using a high quality or low-quality flash device, and so the speed problem could just be normal operation. In general, sometimes small writes will seem to go fast, because they get cached in memory. But just because the write operation seems to have completed doesn't mean that it's really done, or that it's safe to remove the flash device. So when you see an LED on a USB stick flashing, that's a sign that it's still writing out. If you write a very large file, eventually there's no more memory available, and so now the slow write speed becomes visible to the user. So this is why I'm becoming more and more convinced that we should just nuke this bug from orbit and start over. Naive users who don't understand this, can often see normal system performance, and report a "me too!", and this just gums up the works. There ***may*** be a real bug hiding in here somewhere, by some users. Or it culd be a configuration bug; or a hardware bug. But there are too many users who are saying, "I'm seeing this too!", when in fact they may just be seeing normal system behaviour. - Ted -- file transfers on USB disk are very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
Night64: No, you're using usb-storage device driver for both the pendrive and the ipod. The messages that you quoted as coming from the ipod just means that the usb-storage module had gotten unloaded, and when it was loaded as a module, it prints those lines to the kernel log. The fact that things were fast going to the ipod and variable when you write to the your USB flash device tends to indicate that the problem is specific to the flash device; it might just be that the flash device is sometimes slower because writing to flash can be slower sometimes, and it might be exacerbated by the FAT filesystem, which is never known as a speed demon. yes, this is reproducible. just watching a movie will (after the timeperiod for putting the display to sleep as in power management preferences) trigger a dpms off of the monitor. note, that the screensaver is disabled (tested by setting 15 min dpms timeout and 10 min screensaver). mplayer, which is more verbose, tells, that it disables screensaver, but the monitor will nevertheless go off. just guessing, it may be not totem's but gnome-screensaver's fault (2.24.0-0ubuntu6). Steps to reproduce: 1) Click on any panel launcher, Result: Launcher, erm, launches, and an orange 'highlight' box placed on top of launcher icon indicating its selection. Expected Result: Launcher launches and *without* leaving launcher highlighted! ALTERNATE (more consistent) reproduction method: 1) Click and hold down button on panel launcher. 2) Move mouse off of launcher to blank panel space (i.e. grey space.) 3) Release mouse button. Result: Orange 'highlight' box placed on top of launcher icon indicating its selection. I can get rid of the box by clicking on any other panel item (including Applications/Places/System.)
