same results.

[Bug 378891] [NEW] Resume from suspend/hibernate chooses when to function

2009-05-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Of course, for now, it varies greatly between both desktop and laptop
users of Ubuntu as to whether or not the Suspend/Hibernate buttons work.
For me, however, I've found that my system is a little different from
the existing bug reports, but I'm sure I'm not alone here.

My system (HP DV6446us/2GHz AMD64 Turion Dual Core/2GB/nVidia GeForce
7150M/160GB/32-bit Ubuntu 8.04.2) used to always malfunction when
suspending or resuming, however, now it seems like it chooses when to
actually function. It, at first, seemed like it had to do with luck,
but it seems that if I try to immediately resume the system, it
malfunctions, if I leave it for 5 minutes or so, it functions correctly,
but if I wait more than 10 minutes or so, it also malfunctions.

I know that everyone is trying to fix this for good, but I believe that
this information may come in useful for anyone trying to solve this bug,
knowing that time does seem to be an issue, at least for me.

Users of Ubuntu in general, and getting more and more specific until it
reaches users of Ubuntu 8.04.2 with the same hardware I have can attempt
to recreate this.

Still present in the second update to Ubuntu 8.04. Ubuntu 8.04.3 will

be a good time to just apply the patch and get this bug fixed in Ubuntu

[Bug 183846] Re: google calendar source does not show all events

2009-05-20 Thread rg
Oh, and I was wrong about "on the web" being the same as CalDAV. I just
tried adding my google calendar using the CalDAV method described by
Rich's link above, and it works quite nicely. Evo hung up a bit at
first, but recovered on its own, I'm getting recurring events AND I can
create events from Evo up to Google (with the right time and
everything!)

So far, CalDAV is working way better than the built-in "Google"
approach.

[Bug 183846] Re: google calendar source does not show all events

2009-05-20 Thread rg
I'm on Ubuntu 9.04 + Evolution 2.26.1. Two days ago I wasn't getting any
recurring events synced from my Google calendar. I tried adding as a
Google calendar and as an "On The Web" calendar (is that caldav?)
Neither was giving me recurring events.

Today I was gonna add my two cents to this thread, when I looked at
Evolution again and wha?? The recurring events are there! But only on
the "On The Web" version of the google calendar. The "google" version of
the google calendar still doesn't show any recurring events.

And here's something else I realized that changed: Before, every time I
fired up Evolution, it would prompt for my google calendar password,
even though I always checked the "remember this password" box. Now it's
not doing that anymore.

I haven't run any updates in the last two days, so either Google is
changing stuff, or.. here's another totally harebrained theory: this
morning I needed to encrypt an unrelated text file, using Seahorse. To
do so I had to create a new PGP key, because this is a fresh Ubuntu
install. I don't see why this has anything to do with it, but I can't
help but notice that...

1. I did something password/key related, and then a password/key related
issue went away in Evolution.

2. The recurring events problem went away at (it seems) the same time as
the password issue.

So.. perhaps Evolution needs to log into the google account repeatedly
for recurring events; and perhaps some sort of keyring issue is
preventing that; and perhaps running seahorse (gnuPGP) for the first
time "fixes" the keyring issue?

As I said, harebrained. But it would explain a lot, like why such a
serious bug is happening to only a few users, and generally not to
programmers (who are most likely to be able to fix it AND most likely to
have already touched their keyrings)

hm.

[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: "BadWindow" X error under Xvnc

2009-05-20 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
The resolution not being configurable by the vnc client is expected I
think. Xvnc and I assume vnc4server don't support xrandr so you can't
change the resolution from what is configured on the server when the
display is created. So I think that one is a limitation rather than a
bug. You can make multiple virtual displays on the server, each at
different resolutions to suit different client devices (netbook vs.
laptop).

Pity g-s-m is still crashing on jaunty though!

[Bug 378873] [NEW] Network shares unmount during file transfer

2009-05-20 Thread nonoitall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I've experienced this problem in new installations of Hardy, Intrepid
and now Jaunty as well.

I can browse to a Windows network share by going to Places->Network.
Then I copy a number of files/directories (totaling ~30GB or so) to a
local destination. I expect the transfer to take 1-1/2 to 2 hours on
our network. However after a certain amount of time of successfully
transferring files (time varies anywhere from less than 5 minutes to
half an hour) the transfer hangs, not progressing at all, due to the
share having become unmounted. (And the only way to cancel the transfer
is to log out, as the cancel button does not work.)

File transfers from manually mounted shares work fine, but using the
'user-friendly' method always hangs.

[Bug 378867] [NEW] System Monitor Panel Applet doesn't show encrypted disk usage

2009-05-20 Thread meist3r
Public bug reported:

When I add the hard disk option to the system monitor panel applet I
always get 0% disk usage display. I use an lvw encrypted drive with an
unencrypted boot partition and the rest in one large lvm volume which is
split into root, home and swap. See screenshots for details. I would
expect the applet to display a visual representation of the current disk
size and how much of it is used. Instead I get "0% in use" all of the
time.

Version is Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 installed from DVD and gnome-system-
monitor 2.26.0.1-0ubuntu1

Is there any way to display not overall disk usage but disk activity in
the system monitor? That's what I'm looking for but the feature is
broken anyway.

[Bug 378861] [NEW] access errors when using tabs

2009-05-20 Thread Nordware
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I wanted to import my files from a external drive to my internal ntfs drive,
where i store all my non-os-data.
So i opened the ntfs disk in the first tab and the external disk (ntfs, too) in
the second one.
Now, if i right click in the window (first tab) and choose to make a new
directory, file or whatever, it is written to the folder un my external drive,
which i have opened in the second tab.
Also, i cannot delete a file from the local disc because the external drive is
read-only.
If i open the two drives in two separate windows instead of tabs it works
alright.

I hope you understand what i mean, it is really difficult to explain.
Maybe i will record a video showing what happens and post a link...

[Bug 378849] [NEW] Epiphany browser lacks printing option to ignore scaling and shrink to fit page

2009-05-20 Thread Murrquan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

After perhaps a couple dozen sheets of paper (caused by an ever-so-
careless blind frenzy of print job queuing), I realized that my pages
were not printing the way that they did in Firefox! I know, you'd think
it was a different browser or something. Anyway ...

The right-hand side of each document was being cut off, which was not
good. I explored the print options for ways to get around this, but
there was no landscape mode; only a scaling option with a percentage
scale, which did not seem very useful since I didn't know exactly how
much I would need to shrink my documents. There also was no option to
"ignore scaling and shrink to fit page width," the way that there was in
Firefox ... apparently, this option is what allowed those enormous
tables to print out properly.

An option like this might be very handy! It might almost make a good
default, seeing as how the alternative is wasted paper ... or at least,
it was for me. >.>

[Bug 378001] Re: bbb

2009-05-20 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

Oops, sorry, that's what I get for not checking the driver names more
closely. libusual is mostly harmless; it's the mapping function that
arbitrates between ub and usb-storage drivers. The USB low
performance device driver is ub.ko, normally found in,
kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko:

% find /lib/modules -name ub.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.27-9-generic/kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/block/ub.ko

You really, really, *really* want to avoid using the low performance
USB driver at all costs. Fortunately at least with modern kernels
libusual defaults to trying to prefer the usb-storage driver. I'm not
sure of the time frame, but a while ago, some distributions were
defaulting to using the ub driver, and *boy* was that a disaster.

The ub driver is useful in embedded devices where you might not want
to have the full USB stack (udev, hal, etc.), but I'm not sure why it
anyone would want it to use it on a normal system

Simon's observation is quite right, some flash devices are just slow.
Note that "1x" flash devices will only write at 150k/s. A "16x"
device will write at 2.4 MB/s. And this is assuming the filesystem
doesn't get in the way. This is the speed rating used by Compact
Flash or Secure Digital (CF or SD) cards. USB sticks generally don't
have speed ratings at all, and depending on what you've purchased,
they could be quite slow indeed. Note that with SD cards, sometimes
the high speeds advertised (i.e., 150x) may not apply at all unless
you have special hardware --- or sometimes the manufacturers are just
lying. But given that there do exist "1x" flash devices that only
write at 150k/s should be a warning that some flash devices Are Just
Slow. Hence my request that people who are really interested in
debugging this should use USB hard drives, and not USB flash devices
--- there's no way for us on the other side to know whether you are
using a high quality or low-quality flash device, and so the speed
problem could just be normal operation.

In general, sometimes small writes will seem to go fast, because they
get cached in memory. But just because the write operation seems to
have completed doesn't mean that it's really done, or that it's safe
to remove the flash device. So when you see an LED on a USB stick
flashing, that's a sign that it's still writing out. If you write a
very large file, eventually there's no more memory available, and so
now the slow write speed becomes visible to the user.

So this is why I'm becoming more and more convinced that we should
just nuke this bug from orbit and start over. Naive users who don't
understand this, can often see normal system performance, and report a
"me too!", and this just gums up the works.

There ***may*** be a real bug hiding in here somewhere, by some users.
Or it culd be a configuration bug; or a hardware bug. But there are
too many users who are saying, "I'm seeing this too!", when in fact
they may just be seeing normal system behaviour.

- Ted

regardless of the folder I spectify for my music in Preferences. My
music is stored in a directory called "Music", with the capital 'M' as
is the current Gnome naming convention.

Thanks for the info, Ts'o. But your comment about libusual caught my eye. In
Ubuntu 9.04 this module still shows up, right?

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-20 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
Night64,

flash devices are slow and the only reason the transfer appears to be
fast at the beginning is that data is written to OS memory and then
later to disk. Use dstat to monitor disk performance as explained on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance, And open new bug
reports please (though not in this case since your device is just slow,
unless you can demonstrate better performance using Windows everything
is as expected).

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-20 Thread Theodore Ts'o
Night64:

No, you're using usb-storage device driver for both the pendrive and the
ipod. The messages that you quoted as coming from the ipod just means
that the usb-storage module had gotten unloaded, and when it was loaded
as a module, it prints those lines to the kernel log. The fact that
things were fast going to the ipod and variable when you write to the
your USB flash device tends to indicate that the problem is specific to
the flash device; it might just be that the flash device is sometimes
slower because writing to flash can be slower sometimes, and it might
be exacerbated by the FAT filesystem, which is never known as a speed
demon.

Note that this might not be true for other users on this bug report ---
which is why I've suggested everyone file separate bug reports. People
using Ubuntu 8.10 might possibly have been using the Low Performance USB
storage driver, which Canonical inexplicably configured into older
Ubuntu kernels. Anyone using that will definitely see massive
performance problems --- and this has been known for ages. (Another
reason why many kernel developers aren't happy trying to clear up
Ubuntu-specific bugs) In any case, this kernel configuration bug
doesn't seem to be a problem for Ubuntu 9.04; libusual.ko doesn't appear
to be built any more, which is a Very Good Thing. Some users from a
year ago who might have been using the low performance USB driver might
have a very different problem than yours --- which is why it's better
for each user to open separate bug reports.

Remember that most of the people with the experience and knowledge to
help are volunteers. If Ubuntu users continue to make life difficult,
kernel developers will simply stop volunteering to wade through the
cesspit of Ubuntu launchpad bugs

Stay:

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-05-20 Thread Simon Holm Thøgersen
MVDHR,

and why should we care? This bug has been open for a year and 50 people
have commented here, so news would be that the problem actually went
away. You give no information that helps further debug the issue, please
read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance and diagnose your
problem according to the tips given there before posting anything
further. And please, please, please open a new bug once you've followed
through with that page since it actively hurts when people hi-jacks
other peoples bugs for what might be a completely different issue.

[Bug 378744] Re: totem does not disable dpms

2009-05-20 Thread ibotty
yes, this is reproducible. just watching a movie will (after the
timeperiod for putting the display to sleep as in power management
preferences) trigger a dpms off of the monitor.

note, that the screensaver is disabled (tested by setting 15 min dpms
timeout and 10 min screensaver). mplayer, which is more verbose, tells,
that it disables screensaver, but the monitor will nevertheless go off.

just guessing, it may be not totem's but gnome-screensaver's fault
(2.24.0-0ubuntu6).

(btw: this is a karmic fully updated from 20th may 09)

[Bug 378780] [NEW] Panel Launchers Retain Focus

2009-05-20 Thread Matt Gagne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I tried reopening bug #18361 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-panel/+bug/18361), but was told to instead open a new bug. So I
have done so:

I seem to have a regression of bug 18361. Instead of dotted lines, I get
the Gnome 'icon selected' orange highlight/box around my launchers.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Click on any panel launcher,

Result: Launcher, erm, launches, and an orange 'highlight' box placed on top of
launcher icon indicating its selection.
Expected Result: Launcher launches and *without* leaving launcher highlighted!

ALTERNATE (more consistent) reproduction method:
1) Click and hold down button on panel launcher.
2) Move mouse off of launcher to blank panel space (i.e. grey space.)
3) Release mouse button.

Result: Orange 'highlight' box placed on top of launcher icon indicating
its selection.

I can get rid of the box by clicking on any other panel item (including
Applications/Places/System.) Please note that this occurs using *both*
Compiz and Metacity.

Specifications:
HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop
Gnome Version: 2.26.1
Linux Kernel: 2.6.28-11-generic
gnome-panel 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu7 (jaunty)
I am running Jaunty with all current updates.
