Re: [Bug 386536] Re: voice recording impossible

2009-06-13 Thread Marc Tabar
Hi,
thanks for your help but it hasn't changed much.
I have attached various screen captures so that you can see what settings I
have.
The microphone works but recording through the microphone is impossible.
By the way I am certainly not a computer geek so that means that
explanations have to be as simple as possible.
Anyway thanks very much for your help

 Thank you for reporting here. Are you using ALSA ? if you go to the
 terminal and type in alsamixer you should get to a screen showing more
 audio settings, make sure your mic and/or line in is not muted. If you
 use the arrow keys to navigate through the selections you can increase
 or decrease the levels with the up and down keys. Let us know if this
 is any help.

[Bug 386199] Re: Long delay before new/compose window appears

2009-06-13 Thread Craig Ringer
Cloning my comment from the GNOME bug, since I've identified pretty much
exactly what factor controls whether or not this issue happens:

If you enable your local X server to listen on TCP/IP (on most GNOME desktops,
edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf (may be /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf depending on
distro/version) and change DisallowTCP=true to DisallowTCP=false then
restart GDM, you can reproduce this running directly on your normal X server.

If you run with DISPLAY=:0.0 (assuming you're on DISPLAY 0) the compose
window appears in about a second. If you run with DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
it takes 15 or more seconds to appear.

Here's an interesting example. I have two terminals, with prompts T1$
and T2$ . In T1 I'll launch Evolution, talking on a UNIX domain
socket. On T2 I'll then time how long it takes to open a compose window
by using the command time evolution mailto:t...@nowhere.org;. The
remote invocation only terminates when the mail window has displayed, so
we can time how long it takes to display quite accurately. Once I've
timed that, I'll exit evolution on T1, reopen it with a TCP/IP
connection, and repeat the test on T2. Observe the difference:

T1$ DISPLAY=:0.0 evolution
** (evolution:26183): DEBUG: EI: SHELL STARTUP
** (evolution:26183): DEBUG: EI: mail_read_notify
** (evolution:26183): DEBUG: MAIL SERVER: Count changed: 0
T2$ time evolution mailto:t...@nowhere.org
real0m0.830s
user0m0.160s
sys 0m0.030s
T1$ DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 evolution
** (evolution:26236): DEBUG: EI: SHELL STARTUP
** (evolution:26236): DEBUG: EI: mail_read_notify
** (evolution:26236): DEBUG: MAIL SERVER: Count changed: 0
T2$ time evolution mailto:t...@nowhere.org
real0m16.742s
user0m0.180s
sys 0m0.030s

0.8 seconds vs 16.7 seconds. The only difference is TCP/IP vs UNIX domain
socket comms.

[Bug 107969] Re: Please add a graphic equalizer in rhythmbox

2009-06-13 Thread Paul Swanson
Oh come on! Include a graphic equalizer in Rhythmbox ... Gstreamer
already has the plugin available just give it a GUI!!

It's only on issues like this that I regret using GNOME. If GTK+/C
weren't so convoluted I might consider having a go at developing one
myself. But life is just too short for GTK+/C. It's kind of ironic, the
minimalist desktop environment is powered by a pig's breakfast of a
development stack, and the most offensively cluttered desktop
environment is powered by a very rational one. Why?!! Could someone
please rebuild GNOME in QT/C++ :P

[Bug 386646] [NEW] Ekiga crashes upon startup

2009-06-13 Thread Fibonacci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

As the title says, Ekiga crashes upon startup. I see no window, no
configuration menu, no nothing.
When running ekiga from a terminal, all I see is Segmentation fault.

I've obtained a full backtrace (thread apply all bt full) on GDB.

I don't know if this is the same as bug #380146 or not, but I think it's
not because the OP for that bug did manage to see the window for half a
second. That doesn't even happen in my case.

[Bug 386199] Re: Long delay before new/compose window appears

2009-06-13 Thread Craig Ringer
It's a gtkhtml bug, or possibly a libgtk+ bug.

A workaround is to patch libgtkhtml and rebuild it. Instructions:

$ sudo apt-get install fakeroot build-essential wget
$ sudo apt-get build-dep gtkhtml3.14
$ mkdir $HOME/gtkhtml
$ cd $HOME/gtkhtml
$ apt-get source gtkhtml3.14
$ wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27859768/bug585626.diff
$ patch -p0  bug585626.diff
$ ( cd gtkhtml3.14-*  fakeroot debian/rules binary )
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Your changes WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REPLACED next time gtkhtml is
updated, so this is only a quick-and-dirty fix. (Yes, you can use
pinning or the like to retain them, but if you need to know how to unpin
later, remember to , etc, or things may go pear-shaped, so I won't
explain that here).

When going to Edit Tag and clicking the Icon, one gets the option of
picking from predefined icon, an external photo, or from a photo that
has been tagged with the chosen tag. There's a caption under these
tagged photos, saying e.g. Photo 1 of 12. Using the spin box (Which
should've been a slider, cf. http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-
book/stable/controls-spin-boxes.html.en) one gets to go through all of
these photos and pick one (or parts of one) for the tag icon.

What happened instead:

One can only pick from the (n - 10) first photos. In my example given
above, I would only be able to use Photos 1 and 2 for icons. The rest
would not be available to pick from.

I don't know if it's a good idea to use standard emblems, unless someone

[Bug 386698] [NEW] Brasero will not write single FLAC file with cuesheet to audio CD

2009-06-13 Thread Reed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I'm using Brasero 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 9.04. I use RubyRipper to
rip my cd's to a single FLAC file, and a cuesheet (.cue) for each file.
The FLAC file then contains all the audio data for the cd, while the
cuesheet provides the information regarding track starting and ending
points, including any gaps. This makes complete restoration possible,
including all gaps. I'd like to be able to use Brasero to burn this
format to a black CD-R, as is possible with K3b, but can't seem to get
it to work. The manual seems to indicate this should be possible, using
Burn Image function, but when I attempt this, Brasero returns the
error, '[.cue filename].cue' could not be found.

If I manually decode the FLAC first, and then change the FILE
reference within the cuesheet to reflect the filename of the new .wav
file, Brasero will burn the cd happily. It seems then, that the problem
lies in identifying the FLAC file, and then properly decoding it.
Attached is the error log Brasero provided, and the following is the
cuesheet used (WhileImWaiting.cue):

[Bug 386697] [NEW] gedit + sshfs + wlan-connection-problems = long gedit freezes when saving

2009-06-13 Thread fabb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

i often work on source code in gedit which i have integrated into my filesystem
with sshfs. my wlan connection aborts from time to time. when i save then (or
shortly before) in gedit, gedit turns dark and unaccessible, sometimes even
minutes after the wlan connection has been restored already.
another bad thing with a hanging gedit is that other tabs also aren't
accessible.

i suggest doing the saving in a background threat with a timeout and show a
gedit message if saving wasn't possible + maybe even backing up the file
somewhere in the home directory.
also let other tabs unaffected by this one tab.

[Bug 223671] Re: wnck and rsvg should be provided in seperate packages not requiring gnome

2009-06-13 Thread Didier Roche
Fixed in related branch :

gnome-python-desktop (2.26.0-0ubuntu4) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * debian/control.in:
- move quilt to lower the diff with debian
- sanity cleanage in removing deprecated Replaces/Conflicts packages
- add some Replace/conflicts to be similar to the debian version
- split in multiple binary packages and make python-gnome2-desktop a
  dummy package to be coherent with debian current packaging
  * debian/rules:
- remove unneeded .PRECIOUS
- change quilt call to be compliant with debian original package
- destdir is now debian/tmp and not debian/python-gnome2-desktop
- add dh_install to handle .install files
- remove mv in 'install:' target as they are now handled in .install file
- add dh_pysupport call
- put dh_strip in a loop
  * add debian/*.install:
- one file for each new package
- python-gnome2-desktop-doc.install to handle the doc package
  * remove debian/python-gnome2-desktop-dev.dirs (no more needed with
new install file)
  * add new debian/*.examples files and remove python-gnome2-desktop.examples
  * remove debian/patches/build_bugbuddy_without_builddep.patch and
debian/patches/autotools.patch as having a build-dep on bug-buddy

[Bug 386309] Re: Brasero gives Unknown Error

2009-06-13 Thread Tan Kah Ping
ok here's the relevant lines i think:

Manufacturer:'MCC'
Media type:  '004'

I can burn discs with brasero. It just gives me Unknown Error and I
have to try another way to get it to burn, which is annoying.

After login, brasero gives me this error when I try to burn a DVD, so I
try going through CD/DVD Creator and that works. The next time I login
to my PC and try going straight to CD/DVD Creator, _that_ gives me this
same error, so I try brasero and it works. Trying the same app again
after the first error won't work it just gives the same error again.
That's about all I've managed to figure out on my own so far.

[Bug 386022] [NEW] No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: totem

There are clearly deep problems in the Jaunty audio system, I'm
reporting this as a symptom. At the moment, flash audio works fine, but
totem is showing the visualization and producing no sound. Totem has no
control to see what it thinks it is doing, what audio system it thinks
it is using, or anything about why it might not be working. There is
no error message about the situation, but it seems to know something is
up because the volume control is disabled.

[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread David Stansby
Sebastian, if you are going to claim that this doesn't seem to be a
totem one, could you either explain why it is not a totem issue, ask the
reporter for more information or assign another package. Just saying
that the issue doesn't seem to be a totem one is in no way shape or
form helpful to either the reporter of triagers of this bug.

David, please could you try playing audio with another audio player such
as rythmbox, to try and see if the problem is totem specific or not.
Also, could you try running totem from the command line and seeing if
any error messages appear. If they do, please could you add them to a
comment on this report please.

[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread David Fox
At this time Totem is working on my system. I believe that what happens
is that one of the many sound systems (pulse, esd, alsa, oss) gets
stuffed up, and totem stops working because it happens to use that
interface. It seems like Skype is what usually leads to the messed up
sound system. Rhythmbox is generally not affected. However, at times
the sound system gets further jammed so that the flash plugin in firefox
siezes up. So this is probably more of a design limitation in Totem
than a bug, but the error reporting in Totem could be improved.

I used to be a developer for a Linux distribution, and if I still were
I'd write a diagnostic application to show which sound systems were
installed on the system and test how each of them was working.

[Bug 386377] Re: trashapplet doesn't appear in panel

2009-06-13 Thread Alexander Gieg
Thanks for your reply. My .xsession-errors as of after I reload the
applet is attached. The only difference between this and the way it is
before I pkill trashapplet and click the reload button are the last
two lines:

** (gnome-panel:3819): DEBUG: Removing applet 19.
** (gnome-panel:3819): DEBUG: Adding applet 19.

By the way: The lines about Skype, Del.icio.us and YouTube come from
Gnome Do addons. I don't think they're relevant, but in doubt I left
them intact. Also, two or three lines had Brazilian Portuguese text, so
I translated them into English.

[Bug 386309] Re: Brasero gives Unknown Error

cdrecord.berlios.de points you to the latest tarball which is usually
the best.

MCC is high quality (Verbatim) but you still did not mention the media type

If a DVD-RW has been written to by growisofs before you usually need to
call cdrecord blank=all (takes a long time) in irder to make it usable again.

[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread David Fox
Totem could explain why it has disabled the volume control and suggest
where a user might look to resolve the issue. Whether that is a bug
depends on the project manager and the policies for pre-installed system
components. Given that the current state of the Linux audio system is
a turd pile in a cesspool on a cruftberg it couldn't hurt to be ready
for anything.

[Bug 386778] [NEW] gnome-power-manage not detecting when running on battery

2009-06-13 Thread Patrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hi there,

Using Karmic, gnome-power-manager doesn't work fine. It won't detect
that the battery is discharging or even running on battery. Also, when
pluging in the AC to charged, it acts flacky.

When running on battery:
atr...@patrick-laptop:~$ acpi -ab --details
Battery 0: Unknown, 34%
Battery 0: design capacity 5200 mAh, last full capacity 4587 mAh = 88%
Adapter 0: off-line

When running on ac:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ acpi -ab --details
Battery 0: Charging, 34%, 01:12:51 until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 5200 mAh, last full capacity 4587 mAh = 88%
Adapter 0: on-line

Running on battery and plugging the AC:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
20:27:54.653: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.remaining_time = 1569 (0x621) (new)
20:27:54.659: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.percentage = 33 (0x21)
20:27:54.662: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.rate = 0 (0x0)
20:27:54.665: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.design = 56976 (0xde90)
20:27:54.668: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.last_full = 50259 (0xc453)
20:27:54.671: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.current = 17060 (0x42a4)
20:27:54.688: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.reporting.current = 1557 (0x615)
20:27:54.689: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.rechargeable.is_discharging = true
20:27:54.690: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.reporting.rate = 0 (0x0)
20:27:54.691: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.voltage.current = 10957 (0x2acd)
20:27:54.770: computer_power_supply_ac_adapter_ADP1 property ac_adapter.present
= true

Running on ac and unplugging:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
20:28:26.272: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.remaining_time = 4357 (0x1105)
20:28:26.279: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.current = 17504 (0x4460)
20:28:26.280: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.reporting.current = 1577 (0x629)
20:28:26.282: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.voltage.current = 11658 (0x2d8a)
20:28:26.367: computer_power_supply_ac_adapter_ADP1 property ac_adapter.present
= false

Both acpi and hal will detect the change from battery to charging
IMMEDIATELY, but gnome-power-manager won't. It doesn't detect it's
running on battery at all: the icon is like when running only on AC
(only the plug icon), and if under preferences running on ac tab I
pull the brightness down, it will decrease the brightness. In the
general tab, the icon will only display if Display always is checked,
the other 3 options hide the power-manager icon. Also, as stated before,
when pluging the ac, it will first display discharging (even though it
acts as when on AC, icon displayed is a battery) and after half a minute
it will show the correct charging state (battery with the plug)

Also, when going from AC into battery, the brightness won't decrease,
but will decrease and immediately increase again when connecting the AC
from on battery.

The only issues with the power-manager I have in Jaunty is that the
battery reports incorrectly the Charged and Discharging states, and thus
when running on AC the icon acts as it was Charged and when running on
AC with fully charged battery it shows a battery, even though the
computer knows where it is running from and decreases/increases
brightness fine and applies changes in a power-management script I have
under /etc/pm/sleep.d and power.d.

That is: I tested it on printing this very webpage from firefox on a networked

that file from evince works OK. The result is the same.
Only the list of subscribers is printer through the other text, but that also
happens when making a pdf
I didn't test other applications yet.

[Bug 367024] Re: Connection failed to the dictionary server

2009-06-13 Thread Milan Kupcevic
Connect to 127.0.0.1:2628 instead of connecting to localhost:2628,
gnome-dictionary is not able to resolve 'localhost' for unknown reasons.

Reassigning to firefox, but it's equally likely a problem with one of
the langpacks.
