[Bug 370541] Re: Jaunty's GDM Autologin doesn't work anymore

2009-08-02 Thread Rami Autiomäki
Autologin did not work on my compal jfl92 notebook. It seems that
disabling AHCI in bios fixed this for me. Also boot speed was very slow
with AHCI on.

[Bug 407698] Re: Don't show Stretch Icon... in context-menus by default

2009-08-02 Thread Lightbreeze
FWIW, Zoom in/out/normal would have been added only to the right-click
menu for the Desktop, and not the menu for files on the Desktop. I just
meant to illustrate there might be other ways to do this.

I see you want more thought on this. I never meant to blindly remove
functionality without consideration.

@A. Walton, I don't want to play UI designer on this one. I just want a
sensible discussion _with_ UI designers who are willing to re-look at
the functionality. I realise it is more appropriate to discuss this on a
mailing list. I'll create a thread asking how people are using the
functionality before coming back here with feedback.

[Bug 407903] [NEW] Evolution crashed on startup

2009-08-02 Thread Mart van Ineveld
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I use Ubuntu 9.04. Bug information is assembled and has been sent.

Evolution displayed an empty window on startup, and did not react
anymore (window went gray). After that I clicked on the Clock-applet,
and then the panel froze completely, so I had to restart Gnome. I cannot
replay this situation: after a restart of GDM Evolution started as to be
expected.

[Bug 407621] Re: Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons

2009-08-02 Thread Andreas Nilsson
Setting the two gconf keys to true specifically for Ubuntu is quite
possible (as it's just a default setting that changed, no icons have
been removed for those who wish to keep the old behavior), however, when
mpt, Mark Shuttleworth and myself discussed this at the GNOME User
Experience hackfest in October last fall, all three of us agreed it was
a good idea (it might even have been Mark that first suggested it) and
mpt have been very driving behind this change upstream.

[Bug 407621] Re: Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons

2009-08-02 Thread mac_v
From upstream comments , i dont think mpt was driving this change.
He was more reluctant against this move...

Comment #14 from Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt)
2008-12-29 11:25 UTC [reply]

I agree with Jeff Schroeder (comment 12) in that merely setting
menus_have_icons=false by default, and doing nothing else, would not make
anyone happy and therefore should not be done. I think this bug report is a bit
confused because it started with a proposed solution rather than with a
problem.

He has been always driving for a better implementation of the idea rather than
simply removing the icons...
Well... maybe his stance on this issue has changed ...
*only mpt can clarify on this* .

Consistency is essential but not at the cost of making *everything*
bland .

[Bug 407942] [NEW] unable to add tomboy applet to gnome panel

2009-08-02 Thread wtan
Public bug reported:

Some time after a fresh install of jaunty, I started to experience
troubles with Tomboy. It wouldn't want to sync, then it started in
system tray instead of in panel, then it crashed, similar to bug
#287241. I uninstalled it, purged, installed again, purged again and
installed from source, then found the workaround in bug #287241, and
since then tomboy didn't crash again and loads normally when launched.
But. It only loads into my system tray. I cannot add tomboy applet to my
gnome panel. Right-clicking on panel - Add to panel - it isn't there.
I purged tomboy again and installed from source version 0.15.1 - the
latest dev version, but no luck.

[Bug 407491] Re: [karmic] gnome-power-preferences not storing settings

2009-08-02 Thread Arnaud Faucher
Attached is a screenshot of a faulty gnome-power-preferences --verbose
session.

Shutdown was selected in the When laptop lid is closed combo setting
on AC, but as we see this in the log:

- Changing /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac to hibernate

The same faulty behabior happens when gnome-power-preferences starts and
fills the combos, overriding the gconf values even when nothing is
changed in the dialog.

I'm going to have to go with Kalle and say that the real solution is to

papercut is not a bug in any icon set, but with nautilus. You can't
change the icon without affecting other apps that use that icon

[Bug 408029] [NEW] Monochrome icons in notification area

2009-08-02 Thread Wouter Stomp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

It would be nice if all icons in the notification area would be all
colored monochrome. You can see a similar effect in how icons on the Mac
OS X panel are all black: they look great and bring contrast to the
notification area. Monochrome icons are also much less distracting,
color could be used is your attention is really necessary (like when the
battery is almost empty).

Examples:
http://www.jonobacon.org/2009/07/12/icon-theme-hacking-progress/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/DustTheme (original mockup image)

[Bug 408054] [NEW] drag and drop bug makes file-roller UI unusable as a whole and puts desktop at risk

2009-08-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is a bad one. Open an archive in file-roller and try to navigate
the directory tree.

I submitted a test case. Open my testcase.tar.gz in file-roller, and do
exactly the following:

1) double click on dir1
2) double click on dir4 REALLY FAST (or even sorta fast), or try
triple-clicking on dir4 to more easily demonstrate it
3) you will notice that the drag-and-drop for file3, the element under dir4, is
activated. either that or there is a drag and drop activated for the broken
pointer of dir4 and it won't stop. to get rid of it, try double clicking on an
empty spot in the listview of file-roller a few times or go to a VT and type
killall file-roller.

This is dangerous because people could lose data when file-roller is
holding their X session hostage with a drag and drop. It also makes
file-roller frustrating to use.

[Bug 399492] Re: Feature request : Possible improvements for notifications

2009-08-02 Thread Scott Howard
new ppa is up: https://launchpad.net/~showard314/+archive/ppa

Pretty much finalized low and critical battery notifications:

from the todo
- [DONE] write a check to see if any other battery device peripherals(PDA,
phone, wireless mouse/kb, UPS) exist on the system, if they do the title should
remain Laptop battery low

- [WON'T DO] we might need to make the message 25 minutes remaining
(10%) since the % is more accurate than the time -- if the battery is
low/critically low, all that matters is the amount of time left, not the
% left - so we don't need to tell users %. Same with shut down in X
minutes, you have Y minutes remaining They don't need to know how much
battery is left (Y) is their computer will be turned off in X minutes.

2009-08-02 Thread Kees Cook
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 390134] [NEW] change password too well hidden

2009-08-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've observed that new Ubuntu Linux users have difficulty figuring out
how to change their login password. It's not obvious to them that they
can:

1) do it a GUI way via the Change Password button if only they think to open
System - Preferences - About me
2) do it a CLI way by opening a terminal window and typing passwd.
3) do a different GUI way via System - Administration - Users and Groups -
properties

Could we add a Change my password item to the System - Preferences menu that
brought up the existing About me dialog with the Change password button
pre-selected? Or add a new division to the user/logout widget with
About me ... and Change password ... items between the users and the
logout/shutdown options?

[Bug 349774] Re: cannot change background color on parts of panel

2009-08-02 Thread Paganini
Ubuntu has had this problem as long as I've been using it - since 5.04!
It is *NOT* specific to any single theme. I can see why it is low
priority - it doesn't stop anything important from working - but it is
very annoying.

The panel looks fine in the screenshots taken by the maintainers of the
the various themes. Obviously it is not their fault that the gnome panel
in ubuntu can't follow instructions.

[Bug 399492] Re: Feature request : Possible improvements for notifications

2009-08-02 Thread mac_v
@Scott:
Just tested your ppa, there are some problems,
-the panel icon used doesnt change with the theme, it uses *only* the gpm
hicolor icons
-the brightness notifications are now using the old notifications-daemon rather
than notify-osd.

Also i dont know if this has been removed from gpm or just missing from
the ppa, there is No on battery tab in the power preferences.

Ah... Found the error, themes label the icons for *panels* ,
/gpm-primary-***-charging.svg
/gpm-primary-***.svg

Seems you have it coded to use the gpm-battery-* ,
[i had suggested using the gpm-battery-* for the notifications only]

-Icons are not used in the power notifications.

-The notification for battery full uses the gtk-dialog-info icon. it
needs to use the battery full icon.[or maybe battery-full-charging icon]

[Bug 408095] [NEW] Disable touchpad while typing should ignore modifier keys when monitoring keyboard activity

2009-08-02 Thread Dag Asheim
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

The Disable touchpad while typing option is useful to avoid accidental
touchpad actions while typing. But the current implementation makes it
inconvenient to press e.g. Ctrl and Left touchpad button
simultaneously. (This opens a link in a new tab in Firefox, so it is a
handy combination when browsing using a computer with less than three
touchpad buttons.) It would be much better if the modifier keys where
ignored when monitoring keyboard activity.

I don't know if everybody else use modifier key combos as often as me,
but for me this qualifies as a potential papercut. At least the bug
has the papercut-quality of being trivially fixable; it is just to start
syndaemon with a k option in gnome-settings-
daemon-2.27.5/plugins/mouse/gsd-mouse-manager.c:

args[0] = syndaemon;

Re: [Bug 399492] Re: Feature request : Possible improvements for notifications

2009-08-02 Thread Scott Howard
I'm just working on the strings and not touching the icons yet. This
is because the strings patch will go upstream and the icons/notify-osd
patch should be done within Ubuntu. I'm getting close to finishing it
and sending it upstream.

Ubuntu used to have it's own notify-osd patch, but Martin Pitt has
disabled the notify-osd patch for GPM
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/406396)
since upstream has changed how they handle notifications.

The notify-osd patch needs to be rewritten, see bug #406396. Would
either of you be able to work on that side of it? I took a stab at it
here: bug 390669, but that patch was written against 2.27.1, I updated
it to 2.27.2, and soon we will have 2.27.3.

 Status in Gnome Powermanager: Confirmed
Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu: In Progress

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

 Hello,

I'm writing this feature request because I believe power notifications can be
greatly improved by being simplified to the strict necessary.

I began a discussion about this subject, that you can find on the Ayatana ML
 ( https://lists.launchpad.net/ayatana/msg00146.html ), and I ended up
drafting new triggered and non-triggered notifications, as follows (preview
 of the result here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkdaiXXcv8w ) :

 Icon info
 Title Power information
Body Computer is running on battery power
Laptop battery 1 hour 45 minutes remaining (72.0%)

 Becomes

 Icon notification-battery-070
 Title 1:45 hours remaining

I'll include a file (the shell script used for the video above) with many
more examples, and proposals of improvement for the battery low
notifications too. The icons are created and uploaded into the Human icon
theme. If needed, they can be put in notify-osd. They basically convey the %
left and plugged / not plugged information to make the text part lighter
(images can hold much more meaning than words in some cases).

Obviously I think this is implementable only as an Ubuntu patch (at least
till the notification-* icons get some recognition outside of notify-osd /
ubuntu), but I still think it's worth a try as it makes notifications
 _really_ easier to read.

Voilà. If you need any other information about this feature request, please
let me know ASAP. I really hope this can be done for Karmic.

hi Marlon,
i disagree about its being a duplicate of the gnome-terminal case
first, i don't use gnome terminal, i use a mac where copy isn't ctrl-c (it's
cmd-c)
besides, i tried several clients (see the notes i added) and the problem can
be reproduced on each
if you look through my notes you'll see that what changed it was switching
to csh from bash
(one funny thing: the problem sometimes go away, but returns after a reboot)
could you keep it a separate case?
many thanks

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-08-02 Thread Rick vG
Wouldn't it make sense to use a triple click for it? A single click to
select the file, a double click to open it (or nothing when clicking on
the name label), and a triple click to rename it. Triple clicks is a lot
of clicks, and nobody does it without intending to edit it.

When I click on a file in Windows to rename I just click 'frantically'
on the label until I can it. To me, the behavior in Windows is a bit
random (could be due to poor mouse aiming). Triple click would work
great for me personally, but I don't know if I'm the only one who
renames his files that way.

[Bug 43640] Re: Evolution hangs at exit

2009-08-02 Thread Galadh Ereb
Just a comment, maybe it is useful. I'm using the latest versions from
the repository on both Jaunty and Arch. When I start evolution, it pops
me 2 errors and 1 warning all the time:

Error 1:
Error while Opening folder imap:///INBOX
Cannot write offline journal for folder 'INBOX': No such file or directory

Error2:
Error while Refreshing folder.
Cannot write offline journal for folder 'INBOX': Success

Warning:
Tha last strange thing is the warning. It has no message, and it never
disappears.

Sometimes evolution fails to move a mail to a different folder.

I don't know, if these has anything to do with the freezing at exiting,
if not, excuse me for the long comment.

[Bug 394280] Re: error when burn a iso image

2009-08-02 Thread jose garrido
maybe you're not understanding me.
is not a problem with Brasero, it works well.
the problem is the message that appears when you insert a blank disc, which
should not appear.
should simply copy the disc and no wonder I want to do this.

[Bug 325215] Re: gnome-volume-control only goes to 100%

2009-08-02 Thread Rocko
Yes, karmic is exactly the same. Pulseaudio's volume control app and
Gnome's volume control only go to 100%, but the pulseaudio device
manager's volume control allows 480%, and the behaviour is as described
in the original report.

You also still can't adjust headphone volume, etc, or the login/logout
sounds from Gnome's volume control, so there Karmic has a regression in
functionality compared to Jaunty/Intrepid - I think those were logged as
separate bugs, however.
