[Bug 204567] Re: downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads
@Conn, sorry made a mistake, set the wrong status. The Status is now set correctly. As regards to the debate, the user WILL knw where their downloads are, Firefox by default will go to the Downloads folder, but the user can also select another location in the file chooser if they wish. They can therefore see that the folder will be the Downloads folder, and so I don't even feel it is neccessary to make a Bookmark for it. Also with another papercut being fixed, the xdg folders will now have icons, so it is even more obvious to the user where the download folder is. This method of not saving everything to their desktop also gets the user in a better habit of not clogging up their Desktop, but also getting used the ne concept of the 'Home Folder' if coming from another OS, I know this is one concept that I had to work out and so having a different folder for Downloads encourages the user to browse around a look at the file/folder structure of their home directory. Conn is also right when he says *Just to illustrate the current lack of cohesion, the default image management application (F-Spot) doesn't even use the Pictures folder by default, it tries to save to a non-existent Photos folder... This was a papercut which has now been fixed and so we should do the same wioth this bug. It is a non-standard place to save downloads and we should correct it. -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 320581] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal
Hi, I'm on Jaunty and I still have the problem. Very annoying. Thanks, K could somebody try if that's still an issue on jaunty or karmic? upstream seems to think that's a GNOME bug ** Changed in: gvfs (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Incomplete -- gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/320581 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in gvfs: Invalid Status in ?gvfs? package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse Since installing intrepid, I have had trouble with programs freezing. From what I have determined, it is caused by thread locking, and gvfs-fuse-daemon. The way to make it happen seems to be to use my computer for a while, and then sooner or later, a program freezes. When it does, if I open system monitor, it will show the waiting signal for the frozen program to be futex_wait, and will show the waiting signal for gvfs-fuse-daemon to be futex_wait. I've tried to find information about futexes, but the web is pretty quiet on the matter. This bug seems similar to bug 303190, but I think it's different. The only solution I have found to this bug is to kill the application that is frozen. This has happened to: - gnome-panel - gnome-do - firefox - eclipse - python - getty (I think) - and a few others Every now and then my computer freezes, and I think this is the culprit because if this happened to a process like gdm, it would cause me to be unable to figure out the waiting channel. Also, I'm not sure if this helps, but I installed with the encrypted drive option via the alternate installer. If there is anything I can do to provide a less subjective bug report, I'd love to help, but I've little idea where to go from here so this can be confirmed. I've attached a screenshot of system-monitor at the time of the current futex_wait lock-up. -- gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/320581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Conn wrote :(and why can't the list of devices turn into a submenu in the same way as bookmarks do?). Actually the media menu does turn into its own submenu. , it happens when 5 partitions/drives are added. I think the max items for both media and bookmarks individually is 5 , so we need to *only* change the limit for bookmarks. rugby471 wrote : I don't even feel it is neccessary to make a Bookmark for it. [Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
@David In principle, you're proposal may makes sense, -first click on the icon, second on the label- but I think in practice this is what is going to happen: When I click on a file in Windows to rename I just click 'frantically' on the label until I can it. Why do I think so? Well, because in general a certain visible icon has particular functions. Functions are activated by single or double clicking on the visible icon. These functions exist irrespective of any other visible icon. This is the case for all other icons or fields on any GUI I can think of. According to your proposal, the label field doesn't have a function first. It acquires a certain function after pressing a different field, the icon field. This kind of implementation deviates completely from everything else the user has learned about graphical interfaces. That is: A visible graphical field has a particular function independent of any other visible graphical field. Now, if a user accidently trips over the rename by click function, he won't understand why he can activate it sometimes and sometimes not. Effect: frantic clicking! This implementation is non-intuitive and very difficult to learn since it deviates from the general behaviour of guis. I haven't tested this, so this is merely an educated guess. But I think there are good reasons to believe that this is not going to work well. Therefore, I believe, the rename field must be separate and distinct from the browsing field. The rename field must have the function rename. The browsing field must have the function open folder. You rename by clicking on the rename field. You browse by clicking on the browsing field. If the rename and browsing fields are too close together, then a double click on the browsing field may easily accidently trigger the rename field. So they must be distinct and separate. I've made a proposal how you can implement this in list view. Draw a line between the icons and respective labels. Provide a safe distance between icons and names. The icon is the browsing field. the label is the renaming field. Providing a safe distance between label and icon in icon view is going to be awkward. But someone else made a good proposal here. If you single click an icon, an additional field is shown providing a preview and additional information about the selected icon. This information field is separate and distinct from the browsing icon. The information field contains a label field, which may be edited. I don't know for sure whether users are going to be happier with these proposals. So testing them - say in a beta release - and asking for feedback and evaluating feedback prior to implementation is very important. I'm glad that you think the windows implementation must be improved. This is definitely so, since multiple users have complained about it. I have asked upstream if they can do anything to better feed this information back to the user on failed connection. ** Changed in: vinagre (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- unable to connect to newer Mac OS X computers using ARD 3.1+ or bonjour screensharing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390364 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to vinagre in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 412449] [NEW] Incorrect mount/umount/REMOVE behavior of USB drive
Public bug reported: Host: Karmic, fully updated at time of posting. 1) When I insert an external USB drive, Karmic is automatically mounting all of the partitions. This is NOT what I want, but please don't focus on this one issue. Item #2 is arguably worse. 2) If I open Computer and right click a mounted partition, I can unmount the volume. However, if I click the symbol next to the mounted volume, all of the partitions are unmounted, AND THE DRIVE IS REMOVED. So after connecting the drive via USB, and checking mounts, I see: /dev/sdb1 on /media/GRUB type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) /dev/sdb5 on /media/Fedora 10 type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) /dev/sdb6 on /media/Ubuntu 8.04.2 type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) /dev/sdb7 on /media/Ubuntu 8.10 type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) /dev/sdb8 on /media/Ubuntu 9.10 type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) /dev/sdb10 on /media/SHARED type xfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) and after clicking the symbol, which USED to simply unmount undesirably mounted volumes, the entire drive is removed, e.g., there are no more entries under /dev for the drive. udev log file attached. A few more notes: A) the mounting behavior is inconsistent. During testing to prepare the data for this report, I connected and disconnected the drive multiple times. Each time a different set of partitions was mounted. B) When I connect the same drive using eSATA instead of USB, I am prompted that authentication is required to mount volumes, whereas this is not required when the same drive is connected over USB. C) The unmount versus remove behavior appears to be USB specific. If I use eSATA, the behavior is to simply unmount the partition, as expected. I also have an SDHC card in the built-in reader. It, too, is auto-mounted, but unlike the USB drive, clicking the icon next to the mounted volume only unmounts the volume. Unclear to me how much of this is nautilus, how much is DevceKit, etc., but I'll leave that for others to reassign. I suspect that DeviceKit is to blame for at least some of the behavior, but want to focus on this newly introduced defect that removes the drive instead of unmounting the partition. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Incorrect mount/umount/REMOVE behavior of USB drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412449 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I've got the same problem here. Changing the audio settings in Gnome preferences from pulse-audio to Alsa, makes a difference. wma files are being played, but chopped terribly. [Bug 412449] Re: Incorrect mount/umount/REMOVE behavior of USB drive
Why is this marked as Incomplete? Are you asking me to justify why this regression is broken? Why do I want to unmount a volume?! I don't want it mounted in the first place! OK, it is probably acceptable to mount the single volume when a drive is attached, whereas nhen a drive with multiple volumes is attached, NONE should be auto-mounted, rather than all. But at least one can go into apps/nautilus/preferences and turn off media_automount and media_automount_open. However, I don't want the entire drive removed just because I have unmounted a volume! Why might I unmount it? Oh, let's see: a) I want to run fsck b) I want to run dd c) I want to run other utilities that want to operate on UNMOUNTED volumes d) I might be backing up volumes, and need precise control over when and where they are mounted e) I might just be paranoid, and prefer to keep unused volumes unmounted f) etc. As noted in the upstream report, in order to use the device again, you will have to replug it, which basically repeats the cycle. Here's another little tidbit for you: if you turn off automount, and then MANUALLY mount the volume(s) you want, when you click the eject icon, the old behavior is back: it only unmounts, rather than removes. As noted upstream, a solution would be to display both the drive AND the volumes, such that DRIVES are removed and VOLUMES are unmounted. That GUI change would be satisfactory. -- Incorrect mount/umount/REMOVE behavior of USB drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412449 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
@Bernhard: left-click on Properties or did you mean Rename ? users would rather use an option Rename to rename rather than using properties... Just to throw in an idea[maybe it has already been mentioned but this is a huge bug and i may have missed it] -When user clicks on the file label , a small emblem of a pencil appears by the side of the file label, -If user clicks the pencil icon , it triggers Rename. -Secondary-Click anywhere else on the icon opens the file.[present behavior] This is just 2 clicks[easy] but would not be triggered accidentally [since the pencil emblem is not in the same spot of the initial click.] But this would be beyond the scope of papercuts, such a feature or any other mentioned here need to be requested upstream. *Any discussions here is not going to fix or solve this problem* , it needs to be done upstream. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 411871] Re: nautilus dies when copy a folder to same location
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash- file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- nautilus dies when copy a folder to same location https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 411684] Re: upload crached
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
