[Bug 421786] [NEW] Totem Flash demuxer plugin uninstalled

2009-08-30 Thread Dave
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

This isn't exactly the reported bugs, but probably related. Trying to
open a saved *.flv file. Firefox can play them "live" but the saved on
calls up Totem which can't. I can't get past Totem although FireFox
seems to have other Flash players as add-ons. Ubuntu 8.04 on Dell Mini

[Bug 421780] [NEW] Thumbnails aren't updated when photo versions change

2009-08-30 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

I'm running f-spot 0.5.0.3-1ubuntu6 on Ubuntu 9.04.
The thumbnails for some of my photos stay the same when I edit them with an
external editor. This is especially problematic, because f-spot seems to use
the thumbnail to display a low-quality preview before drawing the actual image
on top of it -- which can be disconcerting if the thumbnail is significantly
different from the image.

[Bug 397223] Re: switch user cannot communicate with gdm

2009-08-30 Thread Truthiswithin
I guess I should confess that a while back I upgraded gdm manually, not
really knowing what I was doing, because of a bug in an upgrade that
left me without a gui. Eventually I figured out how to use the tar.gz,
diff, and dsc packages on Launchpad, but I am not sure if I fudged
things in the learning process... now gdm works fine, except that I
think my messing around did something to the switch user option, and now
it doesn't work.

[Bug 416241] Re: gnome-system-monitor uses 100% of a core, unable to close

2009-08-30 Thread Greg Grossmeier
This is very weird indeed as I can no longer reproduce the issue (it was
simply opening System Monitor and it wouldn't close when clicking on the
X). I bet there have been some upgrades to some of the dependent
packages, which is my only explanation for it working now.

Closing this bug for now, and will re-open if the issue re-appears.

Thanks for the debugging help, Pedro.

[Bug 421506] Re: package ubuntu-docs 9.04.10 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139

2009-08-30 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Thanx for the help.

[Bug 353356] Re: Gnome screensaver lock always reports "incorrect password"

2009-08-30 Thread JeromeQc
I am experiencing the exact same issue and Saramburu solution doesn't
work for me. It must be because of recent updates since this issue only
started today and I was able to unlock my screen many times a day just
recently.

This is a major problem for me since I have another bug when I switch
sessions causing vertical green lines on my screen. The only workaround
is to restart my X session and it made me loose my work setup each time.
For now, I unchecked the screensaver option to lock the screen.

This is not related to the screensaver (in my case) because I also get
this problem when locking the screen manually from the start menu.

What missing information do you need to be able to solve it? I can
reproduce it easily.

I am on Jaunty Jackalope with Gnome 2.26.1.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-08-30 Thread Patrick Roberts
pyrates wrote on 2009-08-29:
"The design of the clipboard isn't...

...it is broken and not working."

I couldn't agree more!

Przemysław Kulczycki wrote on 2009-08-29:
"@pyrates
If it isn't rocket science for you, why don't you write a patch to fix it?"

Could people please STOP posting such comments? You people talk like
everyone in the world knows how to program.

I also understand exactly how copy/paste works nowadays, how it should
work and where it needs to be fixed. For me it also isn't rocket
science. Does this mean I'm able to fix this problem? No, because I
don't know how to program. Sure, I can do "Hello world" and some simple
calculations, but that's all. When seeing the source code of other
programs I don't understand anything. When do people start to realize
not everyone knows how to program and how to fix bugs?

Przemysław Kulczycki wrote on 2009-08-29:
"Most Ubuntu developers aren't paid for their work, they do it voluntarily.
And the number of Ubuntu devs isn't infinite."

And that's the main problem of open source. Someone has an idea, starts
to write some code and releases a bèta version. A lot doesn't work as it
should work, but instead of first fixing those bugs, the developer
starts integrating some new features. He has some cool ideas and he
wants to implement them. True, what's more fun: fixing bug or adding
cool new features? So the developer keeps on adding new features, but
after years of development those bugs from the first build aren't even
fixed.

Then the original developer doesn't want to go on developing his
software, so he just stops. Some othet people pick up the code and start
adding their cool new features, which also have some bugs. Those bugs
also need to be fixed, but adding new features is more fun, so new
features are added. It doesn't matter if people are complaining about
those bugs, because the developers aren't paid, so they can do what they
want: adding new features.

Ubuntu (actually Linux in general) has so many bugs that aren't fixed
after all those years. No way you should see such thing in a commercial
product like Windows or Mac OS, but in a free operating system like
Ubuntu (Linux in general) this is possible. It's possible to not fix
those bugs, even if they exist for more than ten years. What Ubuntu (or
Linux in general) really needs are more paid developers, a bunch of paid
professionals. Only then will there be "a year of the Linux desktop".

Przemysław Kulczycki wrote on 2009-08-29:
"Comments such as yours won't help fixing this bug."

The developers don't want to fix this bug, so it doesn't matter which
comments are posted. All of them don't help fixing this bug. The only
way to help fix this bug, is giving a professional programmer a whole
lot of money if he fixes this bug.

P.S. After all those years this bug is still on the wishlist.
Ridiculous! This isn't a wishlist, this is a bug of the highest priority
as people are frustrated, because they constantly loose their work. Why
do you think the market share of Linux grows so slowly? They try it,
loose their work, because of this ridiculous 1980's-style copy/paste
method and go back to Windows or buy a Mac.

This is a bug of the HIGHEST priority!

[Bug 420810] Re: gnome-about-me picture does not appear at login

2009-08-30 Thread TC
Thanks, arky. I did attempt to identify the package name using apport (I
thought that was the Alt-F2 option where I entered ubuntu-bug gnome-
about-me), and the Help menu function doesn't exist in the application.
I used the System Monitor utility to find the name of the process which
is why I labeled it as gnome-about-me as that is what was listed in
System Monitor. I also Googled for gnome-about-me and also went to the
Ubuntu package list website to try to find the correct name of the
package, but could not find it. If you could provide other steps for me
to identify the package name, I would be glad to find and report that
name.

Thank you.

[Bug 275340] Re: Remote Desktop - "only accept from localhost" option does not work

2009-08-30 Thread anatoly techtonik
Without an option to listen to localhost only it is impossible to
securely connect to vino server through SSH tunnel. I would say Ubuntu
is insecure with such kind of default client. It usually a matter of
hours before you get scanned by some roaming droid that will try to
break the pass next try. I do not know what is the normal rate of
password probing for vino, but there are always ways to sniff you
traffic, so I would raise the status to rather critical security issue.

[Bug 411533] Re: users and groups prog blocked on first launch

2009-08-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
What the screenshot shows is actually that the backends are not running.
The only line returned is about the command 'grep -i backends' showing
itself (stupid, I know).

So the line that shows us that the backends are running is:
 3587 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/system-tools-backends
(which may/should be completed with one line per configuration module if you're
using them)

Thanks for your work investigating!

Nope, I meant prior to first attempt. The screenshot is taken upon fresh

then

ps ax | grep -i backends

always returns what was shown in the screenshot. I'll give the debug

What I can see in these information can't explain the many problems
you're facing. The little failure I see will have stopped the upgrade in
the middle, but it can be fixed by forcing a new upgrade. Thanks for
reporting, I hope (and reckon) you've found another solution since then.

[Bug 260765] Re: Poor DVD playback since Intrepid because of in progress resindvd plugin

2009-08-30 Thread amano
For Karmic the Xine backend was killed from Totem. Thus people HAVE to
rely to the GSTREAMER backend and thus resindvd, which has improved for
the last gstreamer-bad releases. Today GStreamer Good 0.10.16 & Bad
0.10.14 stable releases have been released:
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/news/#2009-08-29T20:00:00Z

Gstreamer-bad 0.10.14 should be shipped in the repos because it fixes
further DVD playback bugs:

*588638 : [katedec] add x-dvd-subpicture output
*593063 : resindvd and rawparse do not use correct base LDFLAGS

[Bug 411533] Re: users and groups prog blocked on first launch

2009-08-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I guess you meant "prior to second attempt". On fresh boot, before
starting users-admin, the stb should not be running (as on your
screenshot).

A standard way to get information would be to use gdb. Can you try "pidof
system-tools-backends; gdb attach " and then "thread apply all bt"? I
guess you'll need to install debug symbols packages for the traces to be
readable to me. You should install those packages (if you're using the 32 buts
version):
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/g/gnome-system-tools/gnome-system-tools-dbgsym_2.27.3-0ubuntu1_i386.ddeb
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/g/glibc/libc6-dbgsym_2.9-4ubuntu6_i386.ddeb

Else you can add the line
deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com karmic main restricted universe multiverse
to /etc/apt/sources.list, and then install the packages
gnome-system-tools-dbgsym and libc6-dbgsym. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace (same result).

I know that's a little complex, but that could help. Thanks!

No problem, I prefer things that way too... So I'm closing it, don't
hesitate to file new reports (rather than reopening this one) if you run
into trouble. Thanks!

[Bug 406211] Re: time-admin crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2009-08-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Well, if your clock shows the right time, then no chance the current bug
can raise fsck issues. I don't think the time can become incorrect
because of the crash, since the system settings should not be modified.

[Bug 420488] Re: Can't create file/directory on desktop using right mouse button menu if desktop_is_home_dir

2009-08-30 Thread Naji Mammeri
In order to recreate the bug :
* boot
* open gconf-editor
* set /apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir to true
* refresh nautilus (F5)
* on the desktop, open the right mouse button menu and click "create new folder"

note: my installation of Ubuntu went through several upgrade processes,
i don't know whether or not it has influence on the apparition of the
bug

[Bug 418617] Re: Sound Prefrences applet does not offer a way for laptop users to use mic jack attached mic

2009-08-30 Thread Jerone Young
To follow up on this more I bring the example of the Lenovo Thinkpad.

It has 3 ways of recording audio:

1) internal mic

2) mic jack

3) dock mic
   * if your on a docking station you can have a microphone attached. This is a
seperate codec (mixer) from the mic jack.

Exactly how does a user use the doc mic ? This is why you cannot have
everything be automatic as you make assumtions that may not be true for
all users.

In this case a user could have a mic plugged into the dock, but wants to
use their headset to record. Maybe both just happened to be plugged in
and they want to use the internal mic as they have many friends who want
to chat who are with them.
