komputes [2009-09-01 3:42 -]:

You shouldn't get this password prompt at session startup any more.
But of course you should still get it when you manually attempt to
mount an internal disk in GNOME.

Works fine here.

> I still get prompted for a password when I boot.

When exactly? What does the dialog say?

> I now get prompted for a password when mounting a secondary disk,
> and I'm in the sudoers file as NOPASSWD.

Mounting has not been done through sudo since at least Breezy (5.10),
so sudoers won't have an effect. "secondary disk" -> internal hard
disk? Then that's correct and expected. We have never allowed the user
to mount an internal disk without authorizing with his password.

[Bug 420893] Re: Editing m4a metadata corrupts file

2009-08-31 Thread Ambiguity
Take a m4a file that plays fine on your iPod (I have a old 5th
generation) and change the genre of it in Rhythmbox. After coping the
file back to your ipod (I use gtkpod) your ipod will attempt to play the
song but after a couple seconds it will advance to the next song, never
outputting any sound. For me it displays the track title/artist/album &
album art correctly on the iPod, it appears it is trying to read the
song and just gives up.

This entry from the rhythmbox dev mailling list may be of help:
http://www.nabble.com/Writing-m4a-tags-td20284610.html
"I've committed it, but anyone wanting to try it out should be aware
that m4a files edited in rhythmbox won't play in itunes, and I assume
won't play on ipods either. I have no idea if this is a problem in
qtmux or something I'm doing wrong, but maybe someone who has more than
ten m4a files will spend the time to figure it out. I'm not
particularly worried about this as the only people who have qtmux at the
moment are those going out of their way to test it. Nothing has changed
for those who don't have qtmux installed. "

I opened up both m4a files in a hex editor and the broken one seems to
not only have its metadata changed, but the header is changed as well.

[Bug 419829] Re: gnome-power-manager-inhibit gone in karmic

2009-08-31 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for your report. Here is some information as to where inhibit went:
http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/01/28/inhibits-and-the-new-world-order/

Basically all inhibiting is done with gnome-session-manager. The dbus
interface is described in the gnome-session documentation in /usr/share
(it's a dbus call to gnome-session-manager.inhibit()). The command you
are referring to was a python script written specifically for Ubuntu,
which was broken when inhibit was removed from GPM.

Someone will either have to write a new script and possibly place it in
either gnome-session or GPM, or you could use the gnome inhibit applet.
You can add it to the top panel, clicking on it should inhibit
shutdowns/suspends. There are some bugs with that applet, but we are
hoping to work them out soon.

[Bug 275340] Re: Remote Desktop - "only accept from localhost" option does not work

2009-08-31 Thread komputes
@ anatoly techtonik

I completely agree with your statement. Keep in mind that you can simply
block all ports but 22 (ssh) as a workaround.

As I said in comment #8:
The localhost option seems to have been removed from the project in vino
2.26.0-0ubuntu1 (Jaunty).
I'm guessing they couldn't make it work properly so they just took it out.

And in comments #11 & 12:
As mention in the upstream bug by Jonh Wendell :
"local_only preference is now obsolete. Now you are able to select a network
interface which vino must listen to."

The select network interface is not available (I do not see it) but when
this is fixed you should should be able to say select localhost and that
will block all requests from the outside.

pyrates : This is a bug report, ideas are counterproductive here. It is
more appropriate to brainstorm on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com which was
created for that purpose. As repeated before, there is already a

to bring a solution to the problem.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-08-31 Thread pyrates
Oh yeah and I almost forgot, remove the selection copy method. If an
individual app wants to do it fine, but don't make it system wide by
default. This way those who use terminal apps who want selection can
still keep it. Then it doesn't interfere with any other app.

Putty on windows works this way, so it can be done.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-08-31 Thread pyrates
I say it should be fixed in the X.org layer. Otherwise you have DE's
reinventing the wheel here when they shouldn't have to. Here is how it
should be working:

1. Copy or cut something into the clipboard.
2. It copies directly into ram without needing the original app open after
it's done.
3. If it is too large, put a message that it is unable to copy that large
amount. It can test this by estimating how much memory it is going to take up.
4. When you close that app it stays there.
5. An app can set a flag that checks if its still in memory when exiting, then
upon closing the app, the Xorg layer of the clipboard will warn the user that
the app is leaving this in memory and asks the user if they want to clear it
upon exiting the app. It can pause the exiting of the app to do this. This
way we don't have to have a hard coded value. It is up to the app to correctly
set this flag such as audio/video/image editing apps.
6. When the user has made up their mind of what they want to do, then the app
finishes exiting.

The API needs the following features:

1. Estimation of how large the object is going to be in memory so that it
doesn't take up all the users memory. A good percentage I think is 90% here.
2. A flag that is set that when the app has exited, X.org is to ask the user
if they want to keep the clipboard contents in memory or delete them. When the
user has answered this, then the app in question is allowed to continue exiting.
3. Confirmation that the object has been copied into the clipboard or if it
hasn't, the reason why which goes to point 1.
4. When you cut an object, only delete the original if you paste the new
object.
5. Object type that is copied into the clipboard. This is so that we can
identify the object that is in clipboard and possibly identify which app would
be appropriate to be able to use it in.

To expand on this object type, we can have 5 basic types:

1. Text
2. Raw Audio
3. Raw Video
4. Raw Images
5. A file

Just an idea here, what do the rest of you think?

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Alpha 4
Nautilus 1:2.27.91-0ubuntu1

When plugged in through usb port my external 1tb Hard Drive (NTFS) mounts and
is displayed on desktop. Double clicking the icon to open or going through the
Nautilus explorer it takes more than a minute to open and display the contents.
It worked fine in jaunty, and accessing the hard drive through the terminal
works fine.

[Bug 422286] [NEW] evolution intermittently looses connection with exchange server

2009-08-31 Thread Glenn Hamblin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Package is evolution-exchange (as best as I can figure) version of evolution is
2.26.1
Ubuntu 9.04- the Jaunty Jackalope

For months it has been a relatively rare occurence. However for the last 2
weeks it has been unbearable. I start evolution, it refreshes the folders gets
the new mail, and then sometimes when I try to open a message I'll get the
error "Unable to retrieve message
Lost connection to Evolution Exchange backend process". Once this happens, a
close and restart of evolution is required before another attempt to read a
message can be carried out. I can connect to exchange via the web interface,
and I can connect via LookOut (MS-Outlook) running in a virtual environment on
the same machine. I really don't know what changed, but it is very frustrating.

While it is less important to me, the calendar connection to exchange
rarely works at all anymore.

[Bug 342101] Re: no sound in new installation of ubuntu

2009-08-31 Thread Céline
I just installed Ubuntu on my computer (medion ram 2080 notebook pc) on Vista.
I checked the iso image, did exactly what was written in the installation guide.
I wanted to create a double boot but it doesn't seem to have worked. I asked
for using as much space as possible for Ubuntu on the computer. Had reserved
40Go partition place on Vista (non alloted).
I also might have selected the wrong periph in the last sequence of
installation (advanced, select periph)
My sound card works normally with ndivia.
This is all the information I now think about for resolving the problem.

[Bug 349094] Re: Printing fails. Works with other applications.

2009-08-31 Thread Birgir Haraldsson
Seems it is still an issue:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=591846

For me it works only if I set AuthRequired none and restart cups. That
allows me to print once, then cups changes it back to AuthRequired
username,password.

I don't think that this is cups fault, since the printer I am printing
to really requires authentication, it kind of makes sense to change the
AuthRequired setting.

We're in total agreement about the solution and that glipper is not it. The
solution - of course - is to integrate proper clipboard management into the
DEs (Gnome, KDE, etc...).

I never had that instability though - glipper starts fine here - never
noticed that it didn't.

I admit that graphics are a problem. I rarely copy graphics that way (and if
>I do the source app stays opern for other reasons anyway) - so I didn't
suffer from that. But I get that it sucks if you do that a lot.

Again - we're not in disagreement about the goal. Only a very few very crazy
people would argue otherwise.
Yes - it would be way better if the clipboard would work as you and I and
practically everybody else and his sisters grandpa expects it to.

Most users hardly ever use the clipboard that way. Heck - many users hardly
know how to use the clipboard.
It's already a challenge to train people not to use spaces as layout in word
processing apps.

I agree that he doesn't. But there's a high chance s/he didn't close the
first app anyway.

You don't have to convince me - I'm pre-convinced. ;-)
We're in total 100% agreement about the solution.

And that's the part where we disagree. I'm sorry you lost work. That's
annnoying. Though - come on - it shouldn't take too many losses to remember
this behaviour. Yes - it's sub-optimal. I'm not saying it's good the way it
is - but it's not the worst problem ever.

And there's plenty of things with higher prority. On my personal list -
remembering size and position of closed apps - so they open in the same
position with the same size next time I open them - instead of "smart"
placement that gnome devs prefered - would be a way higher priority in my
book. And I could list several other things I'd like fixed before somebody
tackles the clipboard.

And neither of us knows how difficult this is to fix. It's safe to assume
it's easier said than done - otherwise somebody *would* have done it
already.

Google is collecting ideas every year for GSoC projects. Write a proposal
and submit it. Fair chance a student will be paid by google fixing this.

cheers

Olaf

You will need to apply the patch I provided to the source code in intrepid.
It probably will need to be done by hand though, as the content of that file
very likely changed.

It is not too difficult, just ominous at first.
Get started by doing "sudo apt-get source gvfs".
Get help in #ubuntu-dev on irc.freenode.org

[Bug 411533] Re: users and groups prog blocked on first launch

2009-08-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Another question: do you see an important delay when starting users-
admin for the first time? It could be that the timeout is reached for
some reason, while subsequent calls go faster.

If these don't help, we can still go into the gst/liboobs code to get
the D-Bus returned error codes more precisely.

[Bug 411533] Re: users and groups prog blocked on first launch

2009-08-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Much thanks for achieving that painful task. Comparing with normal
behavior of the backends, it seems that everything is working fine, i.e.
it's waiting for calls from D-Bus - which is quite sad for solving this
bug... :-p

So it could be more of a D-Bus issue. Could you run 'sudo dbus-monitor
--system' and then run users-admin twice, separating the two logs (type
a few RETURN in the console before you run it the second time)? I'm
still hoping some error message could be shown.

Else, you could 'sudo killall polkitd; sudo /usr/libexec/polkitd' and
then try running users-admin, and posting the logs from polkitd. I could
be that polkitd is blocking the backends for some reason before they can
answer to the GUI...

[Bug 57210] Re: Search button does not toggle search field

2009-08-31 Thread jango
@black: I have tested your patch. Everything works fine, even the scenario
mentioned in the feedback.
But there is a little blemish when toggling between search field and navigation
window. The search window is some pixels smaller, so the content of the whole
nautilus-window jumps up and down. This probably is because of the removed
toggle between button and text-based location bar in the search window.

Is it possible to make both "windows" the same height? It looks really
awful.

now I have no message in inbox, but I keep getting the error "error while

I fetch mail from google, and if I disable the automatic fetching I get no
error. I get the error only after evolution check the mail on google, and I get:

note that inbox is void!!!

perhaps a bug with google pop server or in the pop routine?

[Bug 183136] Re: Error while Storing folder 'INBOX'

2009-08-31 Thread Paolo Benvenuto
Experimenting the same bug since some 6 month, I must close and restart
evolution, and many times restarting doesn't solve the problem.

I backup up my data with the menu backupa and restore, without luck:
everything is the same.

I'm using italian locale. Once it happened that it gave the error, and
shutting it down and restarting it with LC_ALL=C gave no error. When
running it from the gnome menu again (italian!) , the error appeared
again. Next time I launched with LC_ALL=C the error was there.

Did anyone evaluate whether the bug is a non-C locale only? Subscribers,
please report what locale you are getting the bug with.

Besides that, it has been a month that, after 2-3 days of continuous
runnign, evolution hangs and I must kill the process.

I have been using evolution since 2002, and perhapes some change in
directory structure have happened, and perhaps I have some wrong dir...
anyone could post here the correct directory structure in ~/.evolution ?
thank you!

This bug is very annoying, and makes me very nervious with evolution
