Robert Ancell [2009-09-10 2:59 -]:
Proposed solution: Make the old GDM available in Karmic as a 'gdm-old'
package for users requiring this functionality

It's just a temporary workaround, though, of course. As it happens,
gdm-2.20 is in source NEW, as a proposed alternative login manager
for Xubuntu. I was hoping that we wouldn't actually need it, though.

The problem seems to be related to particular tracks. I these tests it
will always hang at American Pie but transitions fine through to other
tracks.

Totem can play this track (or transition to it)

[Bug 427229] [NEW] default graphical login should list the users

2009-09-10 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 for a Windows user who wanted to switch to
Linux.

However, the default graphical login isn't user friendly: we don't have
the list of users and the newbie doesn't know what to type.

I think this kind of difficulty shouldn't appear on an Ubuntu distro.

[Bug 392518] Re: Two Desktop GNOME panels unnecessary

2009-09-10 Thread Jérôme
The new 12 notebooks have powerfull processors and thus allows to use
the standard Ubuntu flavor instead of the netbook edition.

However the default 2nd panel is wasting place in height. Moreover, the
new displays are mostly with a 16/10 or 16/9 aspect ratio.

It is boring each new notebook user who has to remove the 2nd panel and
add the new applets in the 1st one by hand.

[Bug 27724] Re: Touchpads should be unaffected by left handed mouse option

2009-09-10 Thread Alberto Milone
@Robert
Those values are hard coded in the original driver too.

It looks like upstream decided to apply the following changes in g-s-d:

1) Don't swap mouse buttons for left-handers on the touchpad (otherwise
a tap would be a right-click)
2) If XInput is supported, don't switch the core pointer to left-handed,
as it would cancel our other settings

http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-settings-
daemon/commit/?id=6a3bedfcb9be30b883a145d7e4ce83fd9cbc3e25

I'm marking the report as invalid for the synaptics driver.

[Bug 338939] [NEW] Hard Drive mounting problem

2009-09-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: mountmedia

The problem arises when I want to take my desktop’s screen shot and save
it in my hard drive. When I press the print screen button Ubuntu gives
the error message “The folder contents could not be displayed.” After
pressing the OK button of the error message and I save it under the hard
drive. But later on when I am looking for those saved screen shot I find
nothing, though when I save those screen shots in .png format it seems
to save properly. Actually the problem is that when I take the screen
shot none of the hard drive partitions are mounted so when saving those
screenshots, it was not saving any thing, since the hard drives are not
mounted. In this situation Ubuntu does not provide any warning or
message so that the user understands the actual situation.

Indicator applet - Configure notifications for system

Do you genuinely understand what this one does? Could you point to

the code is a small script run to add the indicator applet to the gnome-

no easy way to mask it from the list there

[Bug 234412] Re: No simple way to enable 4+ channel sound

2009-09-10 Thread ssbastos
I have a 4.1 speaker system using an old audigy sound card, and I can
confirm that this still happens in Ubuntu 9.04.

You can read more about the problem here:

[Bug 70293] Re: shutdown after plugging in AC with critical battery

2009-09-10 Thread David Coles
Here's the output from a test this morning. Karmic doesn't appear to
have a org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface running on the session
bus, but I've included a log from the org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power
interface on the system bus as well as the GPM logs.

Steps used to reproduce:
1. Unplug AC power and let battery discharge
2. Wait for power to reach critical level. The system should notify you that
the battery is at a critical level and the computer is about to be shut down.
3. Immediately reconnect the power supply. The power tray icon should show that
the system is charging.
4. After a few seconds a message in any open console will inform you that the
system is going down for halt NOW!.
(5. Optional: Curse if you had anything unsaved open)

Note: This isn't over a suspend, but certainly easier to reproduce than
trying to catch it right at the critical moment.

[Bug 423825] Re: gnome-terminal is sluggish when scrolling

2009-09-10 Thread Hendrik Lönngren
Actually, it is more like 2 seconds when in fullscreen mode. Also, the
terminal slows down processes with lots of output, such as, e.g.,
pdflatex. When I do time locate -i bild, which has about 1500 lines of
output, in fullscreen mode, the result is

real0m10.040s
user0m0.936s
sys 0m0.020s

In quarter-screen mode, I get

real0m6.407s
user0m0.872s
sys 0m0.024s

Is there anything I can do to help finding out what causes this?

[Bug 392518] Re: Two Desktop GNOME panels unnecessary

2009-09-10 Thread Jérôme
Mac_v, I'm not speaking about netbooks but about laptops.

A 12 mobile computer has a DVD writer and thus is a laptop but not a
netbook.

Thus I need to install Ubuntu desktop edition.

[Bug 285999] Re: gnome-terminal tabs switch is slow when maximized

2009-09-10 Thread James Pharaoh
I have the same problem.

This is bad enough that if I have a single gnome terminal maximised on a
desktop then rhythmbox will jump when i switch to that desktop. I can
also see the effect when unminimising a large gnome terminal window or
when resizing a window at large sizes.

Has anyone reported this upstream? I will do so if not.

the Jaunty task is still open.

James, I assume you're running Jaunty, right?

[Bug 427114] Re: Creating a new launcher by drag and drop from application menu

2009-09-10 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Aha, I have created the Eclipse launcher in the menu by my own as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/420873 the eclipse package will
not install anymore due to gcj.

Hence I downloaded eclipse from the website and installed it in /opt/
and did my own launcher.
