[Bug 428273] Re: unable to view remote computer thru remote desktop viewer

2009-09-11 Thread arky
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in vinagre.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 428035] [NEW] Authentication Window falls behind windows

2009-09-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

As of Karmic Alpha 5, when a program needs authentication, the window
will not appear at the top of the desktop, but rather at the back. The
window should pop up in front.

I am running desktop effects. When I turn them off, then the window will
pop up in front. However, sometimes it will try and place the window
"smartly" and place the window in the corner or something.

[Bug 344228] Re: Deleting an image that's used as a desktop wallpaper removed it as a wallpaper without notice

2009-09-11 Thread Scott Ritchie
I think the idea that users expect a file to be their wallpaper is a bit
unrealistic. Many users would like to set their wallpaper in ways that
are completely different from interacting with actual files -- right
clicking an image in Firefox, for instance (where it's called "desktop
background"). Interacting with files is a completely different task
than changing the wallpaper, and even very technically savvy users like
myself wouldn't expect it change then. The same can be said of
modifying pictures or moving files around.

In the case of Firefox, it will silently download and copy the file (to
~/Firefox_wallpaper.png), so other places where you set the desktop
background should do the same thing (this includes the image viewer, so
I'm opening an Eye of Gnome task).

All places where you set the wallpaper should act consistently -- The
control center add button, Firefox, Eye of Gnome, and others. The only
way I can see to preserve the wallpaper is to copy the file outright to
a special wallpapers folder; a hard link will change the wallpaper when
the file changes (not a safe assumption), and a soft link will cause the
same problem that opened this report.

Doing this will use up a small amount of disk space, however it will
organize everything for the user and not mysteriously delete files - I
think the few megabytes is worth it in most use cases. If you are
concerned about disk space like Jakub is, you can then use the remove
button and have it deleted without losing the original file; only if we
keep a special wallpapers folder is it safe to have the remove button
actually delete files rather than just scrub them from the list.

This also enables a new feature: the wallpaper chooser can act
consistently as a tool for looking at previous wallpapers. This is
especially important when you're about to switch wallpaper: if we only
copy (or link) the current wallpaper, then we'd lose it as soon as the
user changes the wallpaper, losing the ability for them to undo.

[Bug 344228] [NEW] Deleting an image that's used as a desktop wallpaper removed it as a wallpaper without notice

2009-09-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I saved an image to my desktop (it was the django pony wallpaper
(http://www.djangopony.com/)). I then set this as the desktop wallpaper
by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Change Desktop
Wallpaper". A while later (today), I wanted to clean up my desktop and
right clicked on the image, and selected "Delete". A popup warned me
that this would remove the image. I clicked OK and the image
disappeared. However my desktop wallpaper changed immediatly to a dull
brown colour.

Obviously there is only one copy of the image stored when you set
something as the wallpaper, however I thought it was otherwise. I'd
suggest that when someone sets something as the wallpaper, it stores a
copy of that image somewhere else to prevent things like this from
happening.

#

Wallpapers should only change when users change them explicitly, or when they
modify the source image. Some user stories exercising the appropriate behavior:

Lola downloads a photograph of her boyfriend, todd.jpg, and sets the image
as her wallpaper, either via appearance settings, or within EoG, Firefox, etc.
If Lola opens the image afterwards in GIMP and does color correction, red-eye
elimination, and crops the photo, these changes should be reflected in the
desktop wallpaper. However, if Lola moves the photo from ~/Downloads to
~/Pictures, her wallpaper does not change. Later, if she renames ~/Pictures
to ~/Photos, her wallpaper does not change. If she moves the photo to another
partition, her wallpaper does not change.

Celine saves a Facebook photo to her Desktop by dragging it from her
browser window onto her Desktop. She then opens her appearance preferences and
sets the image as her wallpaper. The next day, Celine sees an file named
hd8dh8ed_djs9dh.jpg on her Desktop. She selects it and presses her delete key
and the file is deleted. Her wallpaper does not fade to black at this point--it
remains unchanged.

The crucial thing we are preventing here is the wallpaper changing without
explicit user consent. We are only focused on the active wallpaper image -- not
the
entire set of photos that the user can choose from when opening her Appearance
preferences. Most users don't think like programs do, so may not
understand why deleting a file (or worse, a seemingly unrelated folder) changes
their wallpaper.

[Bug 428225] [NEW] segfault on startup

2009-09-11 Thread Paul Gear
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

After a recent Firefox update, epiphany started crashing on startup.
When it is started from the command line it asks the question about
restoring the browser state (shown in the attached dialog), and
regardless of the answer, it segfaults. Epiphany worked fine the last
time i used it (about a week ago). I use it exclusively for my Internet
banking, so i am reasonably confident that there is no corruption due to
malware.

I would like to have icons in the System menu of gnome also at the first level
for the following two reasons:
  - All other menus in the gnome-panel (Applications and Places) have icons and
with the indentation in the System menu it looks as if there are icons missing.
  - Because the System menu can be changed in "alacarte" it is a dynamic object
and therefore needs icons.

[Bug 428119] [NEW] Hardware button no longer suspends laptop when locked

2009-09-11 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have the power button on my laptop set to suspend the laptop. When
the laptop is open and unlocked, it works fine. When the screensaver is
active or the lid closed (I have lock on lid-close, but see #428115) the
button doesn't appear to do anything. This works in Jaunty and worked
in Karmic up until the last week or so.

Expected behaviour is that triggering the hardware button should always
suspend the computer. It's quite handy for when I've shut the lid
because I paused my work and then want to suspend to move elsewhere.

[Bug 428117] [NEW] gthumb does not fit the images to the screen size during Slide Show or full screen

2009-09-11 Thread Arnaud Dessein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Unlike Eye of Gnome, gthumb does not fit the pictures to the screen size
when the user asks for a full screen view or a slide show. If the
picture is larger than the screen resolution then only the upper part of
the picture appears. The user has to click on "Zoom to fit window" in
the upper toolbar (hiden during slideshow) for each picture displayed.

This is very annoying, it would be great if it could be fixed, calling
for instance the function "Zoom to fit window" every time a picture is
load and displayed.

Thank you.

[Bug 428115] [NEW] Computer no longer locks on suspend or lid close

2009-09-11 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since a recent update to Karmic, my laptop doesn't lock when exiting
suspend or when the lid is lifted. Both worked fine in Jaunty and in
Karmic up to a few days ago (I've been updating more than weekly). The

does suspend (although I have an issue with using my hardware button to
activate suspend, bug to follow).

[Bug 217196] Re: Totem-gstreamer produces artifacts during playback

2009-09-11 Thread gfnord
@Pedro

Thank you for the quick reply.

However, I read the document you gave and it seems to me that the bug
could easily be classified under "When" dot #4 ("Bugs which do not fit
under above categories, but (1) have an obviously safe patch and (2)
affect an application rather than critical infrastructure packages (like
X.org or the kernel).").

I can agree this is not a critical bug, but it is not something that
happens only now and then or in combination with specific applications
either; it is a true defect in basic functionality - playing videos.

[Bug 423873] [NEW] screen brightness flickers at login screen

2009-09-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When the login screen (gdm) appears the screen of my MSI Wind U100
netbook starts to flicker, i.e. the backlight brightness alternates. The
brightness widget is also shown and its bar goes up and down for 1 step.

When changing the brightness manually using Fn-F4 and Fn-F5 during the
login screen it keeps on flickering but at a different brightness offset
then.

After logging in the flickering continues until vigorously changing the
brightness manually using Fn-F4 and Fn-F5.

After logging out and returning to the login screen it again starts to
flicker.

My system is running latest Ubuntu Karmic (development branch), release
9.10.

I just found bug report 415023 which sounds very similar. But changing
the brightness fast does not induce the problem for me again. Also, it
does not stop flickering for me after ~30 seconds like the other report
says.

[Bug 423107] Re: Dual Head - Panels on the wrong screen

2009-09-11 Thread Martin Emrich
I just found this report, after my panel behaved strrangely after
switching to a dual-head setup. After searching through the Gnome
bugzilla, I found these:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=581519 (panel behaving "randomly")
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=594218 (closest to this LP bug
report)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513685 (another)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=562944 (IMHO offers a good solution)

I'll leave it to the original reporter or a maintainer to choose which
one to link to this bug. My preference would be to place the panels to
the border they were before switching screens, and on the "primary"
screen which XRandR 1.3 seems to offer.

[Bug 427356] Re: Boot Performance Updates

2009-09-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Robbie, in that case why are changes to initramfs-tools required to
implement this? The initramfs hook itself should figure out whether to
run - initramfs-tools can't know, when building the initramfs, whether a
filesystem check will be required since that's decided at boot.

The encrypted fs use case can be detected at initramfs build time, but
that's not the only use case.

+ m3u playlist pause itself if clicking forward several times

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: totem

  Using v 2.27.92

Forwarding through an m3u playlist has strange results. I've noticed it
will sometimes skip to a random point in the next song and pause it, as
opposed to playing from the start. The volume is often muted as well.

- This only began happening after the most recent updates.
+ Steps to reproduce it:
+
+ * Open an m3u playlist with totem
+ * Press Play (the audio is going to start)
+ * Press forward a few times
+
+ What happened:
+
+ Totem pause the playlist (song to play)

** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #594929

[Bug 427356] Re: Boot Performance Updates

2009-09-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Before approving the bulk of these, I have a few questions:

- If approved, how soon can these be uploaded? (I think we want the bulk of
this to land before alpha-6; if you're ready to go on these, feel free to grab
me on IRC so that we can get this on its way.)
- Do we have a rollback plan in the event the upstart job conversions don't
work as intended, and under what conditions would we decide to roll back?
(E.g., what kind of bugs at beta time would be a sign that something is Wrong?)
- There are a number of packages not on this list which have init scripts whose
lsb headers reference packages that are being converted, e.g.:
  /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin:# Should-Start: hal avahi
  /etc/init.d/saned:# Should-Start: dbus avahi
  /etc/init.d/bluetooth:# Required-Start:$local_fs $syslog $remote_fs dbus
  /etc/init.d/landscape-client:# Required-Start: $local_fs $remote_fs hal dbus
  /etc/init.d/dns-clean:# Required-Start:$local_fs gdm
  /etc/init.d/pppd-dns:# Required-Start:$local_fs gdm
  /etc/init.d/pulseaudio:# Should-Start: udev NetworkManager
 + countless instances of 'syslog'

how are these handled? Are all the native upstart jobs guaranteed to be
processed first before running rc?

Regret unable to further test this. I have changed distro's to Arch. I
seem to remember never getting over this problem until resorting to re-
install an earlier version of Ubuntu, probably an LTS.

Best Wishes.

[Bug 425116] Re: Right click Mute checkbox doesn't work in gnome-volume-control-applet

2009-09-11 Thread Neil Wilson
I get no error when it doesn't work. The mute box stays checked and the
little red/white x stays in place. As I say this is only when the
machine first starts with the volume control in the mute position.

If I try to move the volume slider first then the slider returns to the
'zero' position and the mute checkbox then works properly.

What does it mean for usplash to be optional in the initramfs? How is
initramfs-tools supposed to know at initramfs generation time whether

[Bug 27938] Re: users-admin doesn't create home folder for new user

2009-09-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
John: Your problem is not really the same as this one, at least your bug
is identified, and hopefully solved in Karmic. You must have an empty
homedir or password field in /etc/passwd, which is leading to trouble
when trying to commit (see bug 316667). And the problem with the user
being shown while it's not created should be fixed too.

BTW, thanks for trying some debugging - but the tool is not hanging,
it's just not used, likely because the procedure I described only works
in Karmic. You could have used 'sudo killall perl; sudo killall
/usr/bin/perl' before using the command (but now it's not required, I
already have the information I need).

[Bug 426125] Re: Misleading message about deleting user directory

2009-09-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Ah, thanks the precisions. Indeed, in the future I guess I'll add a
checkbox that will reflect the state of REMOVE_HOME, and will change it
if needed. At least, in the default case, REMOVE_HOME is 0, so the
message is right.

[Bug 76449] Re: Cannot sort static playlists

2009-09-11 Thread zourtney
I deal with a very large playlist at work (3000+). I like rearranging
the order of upcoming songs, but the list's scroll position jumps when
you start to drag.

Has this been changed to work with Jaunty? (I have not tried the above
fix yet). I ditched using the program for a while because of this
maddening bug. However, this seems to be the best Linux-based played, so
please, please fix this. It's a deal-breaker bug to me.

[Bug 187335] Re: Unlock button throws an error, doesn't authenticate

2009-09-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
nadrimajstor: the problem with empty home dir field has nothing to do
with the present report. To me, that's bug 316667, which will be fix
very soon in Karmic. The present bug is not very clear to me, and it may
be fixed by the move to PolicyKit1 in Karmic.

Could somebody confirm it can be seen in Karmic BTW?
