2009-09-13 Thread mlindeblom
I have done a number of rebuilds from scratch and end up with the same results
--- sent back to login screen if GNOME selected. Get limited use with
gnome-panel. gnome-session sends me back to login screen.
compiz also sends me back to the login screen.

I am using an AMD 3800+ with a HD3450 video card.

For all practical purposes I have a useless system. I view this as HIGH
priority.

Hi,
The root cause is our previous VBIOS take too much time to read EDID and cause

update the VBIOS, use xdm instead or extend the GdmXserverTimeout in gdm.conf

[Bug 428817] Re: Print Dialog does not allow editing of page parameters

2009-09-13 Thread Swift Arrow
Oops... I notice that you've assigned it to GTK. Good on you!

My suggestions:

1. Get rid of page setup tab on printer dialog. Its useless. Integrate
the functionality that seems to be targeted at it in the File > page
setup dialog box.

2. Allow the application to specify custom page sizes automatically (eg,
printing to pdf in GIMP should give the option to use the image size for
page size).

3. Move the new Page Setup dialog box to the printer dialog, as a tab.
Make File>Page Setup open the dialog set to that tab.

Again, I hope this is ironed out in the future. I love and really
appreciate all the work that so many selfless ppl have put in!

I'm running Jaunty and have a file that causes the same error, so this

[Bug 429084] [NEW] Clock applet leaves shadow on panel

2009-09-13 Thread mannheim
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In karmic (with up-to-date packages as of Sep 11 2009), I see the
following:

1. Change the desktop background to a plain color, for clarity.
2. Make sure compiz is enabled.
3. Click on the clock applet, to make the 'mini-calendar' window appear below
the top panel.
4. Click again to make the calendar go away.

The rectangular shadow of the calendar window remains on the desktop: a
dark-grey rectangular outline. I don't know whether to report this
against compiz or the clock applet. It seems to be only the clock-applet
that has this problem.

[Bug 311842] Re: Shift+Mod4+( doesn't work as a keyboard shortcut

2009-09-13 Thread surreal
I can confirm the bug on Karmic, specifically gnome-control-center
1:2.27.91-0ubuntu3. The problem, as far as I can understand -- and mind
you, this is mostly speculation -- is this:

At the time of keyboard shortcut assignment, all modifier keys and a
symbol is captured. In the non-working example above, what gets captured
is {Shift+Mod4+(}. '(' is, unfortunately, another way of saying
{Shift+9} (depending on the keyboard), so when keys get pressed at
another time, what gets compared to the shortcut above is either
{Shift+Mod4+9} or {Mod4+(}.

I guess whatever is making the comparison is case-insensitive or
something, because alphabetic keys work in Shift-combinations. *-key on
the number pad does not have a Shift-accessed secondary key, so this
works as well.

Does this seem plausible to anyone else or am I way off base here?

an option called "Format messages in HTML" under Composer Preferences.
If it is checked, mails are always formatted in HTML, whether they are
new mails or replies. If it is unchecked, mails are always formatted in
text, whether they are new mails or replies.

What I would like to do is compose new mails in text, reply to/forward

[Bug 429046] [NEW] Right-click in tree view does not highlight selected folder

2009-09-13 Thread eyeskream
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Right-click a folder in the tree view on the left (other than the
current selection), to open a context menu. The folder you clicked is
not highlighted in any way. Since this is what one would expect, one
might think that the context menu refers to the already selected folder,
or that it only works properly if you left-click first (that's what I
thought until today).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Expand the file system in the tree view on the left
2. Select folder "bin" with a left click
3. Right-click another folder, e.g. boot or etc.
4. Notice that apart from the context menu's position, there's no indication
which folder it refers to.

What I expected to happen: The selected object should be highlighted
while the context menu is open - of course without changing the folder
selection. In Windows Explorer, the selection indicator is temporarily
moved to the right-clicked folder, and moved back when the context menu
closes. Another solution would be an additional selection until the
context menu is closed.

[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is

2009-09-13 Thread Lunis Neko
@Nils-Werner, This actually is a picture perfect paper cut. It's small,
easy to fix, and actually is very confusing.

My opinion is this:

The technical side: These files are archives, whether or not they're
compressed. I don't think that we should stop using the terminology of
an Archive. To start using Compressed File, Compress..., etc would be
counter-productive. While I believe that Nils-Werner's comment is way
off base and quite immature, I do believe that no one wants to see
Ubuntu over-simplified. The solution here is actually quite simple.

The bigger picture: The reason people use archives is for the sake of
the Internet. Once upon a time archives were used to save space on
floppies and zip disks, but those were far enough back that they can be
put out of our minds. The current convention of an archive is that of
the Internet. By that I mean that people needed a means of transferring
sets of files over slow Internet. This was two problems in one: the
archiving of many files (say for a Windows theme) and then sending that
data compressed over a slow connection. We no longer need to compress
(generally) to send a file, but we still need to archive. Seperating
those two actions a bit, however, would most likely only cause more
problems. I think it's obvious that the word `zip' and the word
`extract' are the most commonly known ones for archiving and unarchiving
(or compressing and uncompressing) files. WinZIP helped make this the
case. Even now on a Windows computer zip is the most common archiving
method. Now to say that this only applies in Windows is silly. When we
want to compress in Linux we do what? gZIP. bZIP2. The zip convention is
still around, but we don't want it to be. Archiving is the correct term,
compression is just an option.

tldr;
"Archive (zip) files..."
"Add to new archive (zip)..."

Also, the Macintosh method of "disk images" is clever. When you download an
archive Gnome should (optionally) automatically open that file. The idea of
treating an archive as a normal folder the way one would mount an iso to loop
is genius, and treating archive compression the way Windows would treat
compression on an NTFS filesystem (in short: transparently) is even better.
However, I believe that is certainly beyond the scope of a paper cut. I only
reiterate that idea because when it was first mentioned by Martin (#16 above)
it didn't seem to get much love, and it deserves it.

I'm running Intrepid Ibex on the eeepc 1000H.
When I change the resolution to 800x600 everything is ok.
But when I switch back to the initial resolution (1024x600), I have a black
screen with only a mouse cursor that is still working.

When I turn off compiz, it works fine.

Workaround :
When I turn off the autodetect_ouputs in CompizConfig->General options->Display
settings and if I add 1024x600+0+0 in the outputs it fixes the problem.

Just to let you know...

Best,
Jacques

[Bug 429008] [NEW] Disabling Evolution's "quick offline" prompt always causes synchronization

2009-09-13 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When pressing the of offline/online button on Evolution's status bar,
the "Do you want to synchronize" dialog comes up an offers a checkbox to
disable this dialog in the future. If I choose to disable the dialog in
the future and then choose "do not synchronize", then future clicks on
the offline button will cause a synchronization.

I have a few issues with that behavior:
1. Its entirely not clear what Evolution will do in the future when you go
offline and the "quick offline" prompt is disabled - the dialog is ambiguous
about it at best and the user can easily surmise that Evolution will do the
same action as was chosen in the prompt, which is obviously not the case.
2. The user has no way to revert the action if they decide that they do not
want Evolution to synchronize every time they go offline. (I'm aware of the
gconf key, but its hardly discoverable).
3. There is no way to go quickly offline (i.e. without synchronization) and
without going through an interactive dialog. An interactive dialog is probably
not the very definition of "quick".

I'm reporting this here because this is where the "report a bug" menu
item took me here. I'll also open a ticket upstream.

[Bug 413168] Re: Karmic upgrade not shutting off backlight after time

2009-09-13 Thread Mike Butash
There does seem to be a conflict between gnome-power-manager and gnome-
screensaver in relation to the idle timers. Using one or the other they
behave, but not when together. Forcing install of older Jaunty packages
works fine, so I don't believe this is an xorg issue, but something
rather with one or the other gpm or screensaver packages.

I updated fully end of this week and didn't resolve anything with the
screensaver and monitor dim, so I went back to using the old jaunty
packages. Doing a system update only made my suspend broken, network
manager behave erratically, and introduced other broken application
behavior, so karmic still seems to be quite unstable. Ugh.

[Bug 428817] Re: Print Dialog does not allow editing of page parameters

2009-09-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
This is not a problem of cups-pdf, it also occurs with other printer
drivers. The problem is a usability issue of the current GTK printing
dialog. To select the page size you have to choose "File"/"Page Setup"
in the main menu and select the page size. Then you click "File"/"Print"
to do the printing. See also the "Image Settings" tab to adjust the
position of the image on the paper. Mark "Ignore Page Margins" there as
the margins are not set correctly.

Please report the usability problem to GTK upstream.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi! I'll post same info posted on Ubuntu Forums:

Recently I've updated to latest kernel 2.6.28-14-generic i686 in my

I use kde4 4.3 RC and in the latest days I've been suffering of massive

My thunderbird can't even save an attachment, it just cores dump

I've tried gedit from console, it cores dump even before starting!

Here is the backtrace of gdb on gedit behavior:

As you can see something in libgio-2.0.so is wrong. Maybe some new bug
due to latest kernel patch (that nasty bug on NULL pointers stuff).

Interesting part:
if open gedit with gksudo it just works witout any core dump!

$ gksudo gedit

Any help?

Thanks and regards!

[Bug 428817] [NEW] Print Dialog does not allow editing of page parameters

2009-09-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

In Ubuntu-jaunty amd64,

Cups PDF driver does not allow us to change the paper size, orientation,
or anything. I would like to print my images from GIMP to pdf, but they
are wider than an A4 page, and so I cannot print them to a whole pdf! I
know PDF format can support multiple sizes. And the options are there,
just greyed out.

This is non-application specific. Firefox print dialog behaves the
same. OOo Print dialog doesn't even show the Cups PDF driver.

If those options are there, but are just greyed out, I would consider
this a problem. If the options have not been implemented, perhaps put
up a notice on that tab saying that they don't exist?

I hope whoever fixes this gets paid for it! Thanks for the awesome
work!

[Bug 428998] [NEW] "Play Disc" available for removable media, displays error on use

2009-09-13 Thread Louis Simard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem's Movie menu has the options Open and Open Location, under which
options of the type "Play Disc 'LEGALLYBLONDE' (DVD)" appear when discs
are inserted into users' CD-ROM drives. Now, that's all fine and dandy.

However, in Karmic alpha 5, inserting other sorts of removable media,
like USB flash drives, also gives a Play Disc option.

The option, when used, gives the following error dialog:

> The folder contents could not be displayed
> Operation not supported

and presents the user with a "Select Movies or Playlists" window
containing no files. This will heavily confuse a new user.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Totem.
2. Verify that the Movie menu has no Play Disc options.
3. Insert a USB flash drive, memory card or other removable media which does
not have a DVD-Video or VideoCD directory structure into the computer.
4. Open the Movie menu after the flash drive appears as an icon on the Desktop.
(which requires the automounter to be enabled)
5. Select the "Play Disc '2.0 GB Filesystem'" option or similar from the Movie
menu.

[Bug 413168] Re: Karmic upgrade not shutting off backlight after time

2009-09-13 Thread David Tomaschik
I'm experiencing the same behavior. Using "xset dpms force off" will
switch off the screen successfully, but only when the screensaver is not
running. Doing "gnome-screensaver-command --lock && xset dpms force

as a black screen with a mouse cursor on it. At present, I'm having to
remember to manually switch off my monitor in the evenings.

[Bug 428922] Re: File “/usr/share/ubuntu-a rtwork/home/locales/index-C.html” not found

2009-09-13 Thread jasmineaura
One more addition I forgot to note, if it matters. After `aptitude

Setting up ubuntu-docs (9.10.4) ...
update-alternatives: using /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html to
provide /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html (firefox-homepage) in auto
mode.

Looking at /etc/alternatives , there exists two symlinks, firefox-
homepage and firefox-homepage-locales

# ls -l /etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 2009-09-13 19:30 /etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage
-> /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 2009-09-13 19:30
/etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage-locales ->
/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu

And there is:
# ls -l /etc/alternatives/epiphany-browser
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2009-09-08 01:43 /etc/alternatives/epiphany-browser
-> /usr/bin/epiphany-gecko

Maybe there should be a /etc/alternatives/epiphany-homepage just like
there's one for firefox? :)

[Bug 428987] [NEW] Disabling visualization while playing audio hangs Totem

2009-09-13 Thread Louis Simard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

While playing an audio file in Totem, if a user goes to
Edit/Preferences, then the Display tab to disable visualizations, Totem
hangs. It continues playing the current file, but Repeat mode cannot be
honored thereafter and the rest of the UI freezes. CPU usage for Totem
is still 0%, so it's probably not an infinite loop anywhere.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Tick Edit/Repeat mode.
2. In Edit/Preferences/Display, make sure a visualization is selected, such as
GOOM, and enabled.
3. Open any audio file.
4. While the file is playing, go to Edit/Preferences/Display again to disable

[Bug 345166] Re: Tomboy tries to load fuse module in Jaunty...and can't

2009-09-13 Thread Sandy Armstrong
A Jackson,

In software there are such things as bugs, which are fixed as they are
found. I am sorry for you that Ubuntu ships an old version of Tomboy
that still has this bug, but to claim that anyone is lying to you is
pretty insulting.

We are going to start maintaining a Tomboy PPA with stable and
development releases for situations like this where the distribution is
unresponsive to update requests. There are no packages yet, but they
will be available here: https://launchpad.net/~tomboy-packagers

Hopefully the Ubuntu guys will patch their package as Bryan has done
(thanks Bryan!).

Scratch that... `aptitude install ubuntu-docs` indeed fixes the problem
I noticed a symlink was created, and now opening epiphany automatically
displays a "Welcome to Ubuntu" page :)

# ls -l /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 42 2009-09-13 19:30
/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales ->
/etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage-locales

Perhaps epiphany-browser install should detect whether ubuntu-docs is
installed or not and use an appropriate homepage setting accordingly ?
Adding a dependency to ubuntu-docs just to get index-C.html doesn't seem
desireable, me thinks...

[Bug 79030] Re: gnome-video-thumbnailer uses all available CPU power when using bittorrent

2009-09-13 Thread Stefano Prenna
Applying the instructions at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/187136/comments/5
that allow the usage of totem-xine for thumbnail instead of totem-
gstreamer actually works.

Obviously this doesn't solve the issue, but I think it's a good
workaround for those people that have this problem 2007 and never had a
solution...

[Bug 428927] [NEW] Languages list empty at login screen, even though language-support-ar is installed

2009-09-13 Thread jasmineaura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After dist-upgrade from Jaunty 9.04 to Karmic 9.10 (via update-manager),
gdm no longer displays a language list at the login screen (after
clicking my username) via clicking the "Languages" drop-down list ->
"Other"... It's just BLANK... However, the input languages list is
displayed just fine...

I have installed language-support-ar previously, which in turn installed
language-pack-ar and language-pack-ar-base. Also, language-pack-en and
language-pack-en-base are installed... So what gives?

$ cat /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
ar_EG.UTF-8 UTF-8
$ cat /var/lib/locales/supported.d/en
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
$ cat /var/lib/locales/supported.d/ar
ar_EG.UTF-8 UTF-8

# locale-gen
Generating locales...
  ar_EG.UTF-8... up-to-date
  en_US.UTF-8... up-to-date
Generation complete.

# apt-cache policy gdm
gdm:
  Installed: 2.27.90-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.27.90-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2.27.90-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

As a temporary workaround (and for testing), I edited my ~/.dmrc file
and changed it's contents from:

~$ cat .dmrc

[Desktop]
Session=LXDE
Language=en_US.UTF-8
Layout=us

to:

[Desktop]
Session=LXDE
Language=ar_EG.UTF-8
Layout=us

and reloaded gdm via /etc/init.d/gdm

GDM then displays Arabic (Egypt) in the languages list upon login... and
after reboot, English (US) and Arabic (Egypt) are still displayed when I
click on my username because they're now cached as recently used
languages..

So why isn't gdm detecting the currently installed language by itself?

[Bug 428922] [NEW] File “/usr/share/ubun tu-artwork/home/locales/index-C.html” not found

2009-09-13 Thread jasmineaura
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Upon opening epiphany-browser (on a fresh install), epiphany opens a
page that displays just this:

File “/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-C.html” not found.
Check the location of the file and try again.

No default homepage is shown..

I have seen this in the latest epiphany-browser in Jaunty 9.04
(2.26.1-0ubuntu1), and the behavior is yet the same after a dist-upgrade
to Karmic 9.10 (via update-manager), in epiphany-browser 2.26.1-0ubuntu3

If it matters, I have language-pack-en-base and language-pack-ar-base
installed (via language-support-ar) prior to installing epiphany-browser
(and prior to dist-upgrade via update-manager).

Tried to find the origin of this missing file, and why epiphany-browser
expects it to be there while it's not, but to no avail:

# dpkg -L ubuntu-artwork
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/ubuntu-artwork
/usr/share/doc/ubuntu-artwork/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/ubuntu-artwork/copyright
/usr/share/doc/ubuntu-artwork/changelog.gz
/usr/share/icons
/usr/share/icons/hicolor
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png
/usr/share/gconf
/usr/share/gconf/defaults
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/16_ubuntu-artwork

# find /usr/share -name index-C.html

# dpkg -S index-C.html
dpkg: *index-C.html* not found.

Then I went to http://packages.ubuntu.com to search for it:
In Jaunty:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=jaunty&arch=any&mode=exactfilename&searchon=contents&keywords=index-C.html
In Karmic:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=karmic&arch=any&mode=exactfilename&searchon=contents&keywords=index-C.html

However, the exact path epiphany-browser is looking for is simply not
there...

The only three index-C.html files found were in the following packages with the
respective paths:
/usr/share/edubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-C.htmledubuntu-artwork
/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu/index-C.html ubuntu-docs
/usr/share/xubuntu-docs/about/locales/index-C.html xubuntu-docs

Again, epiphany-browser is looking for "/usr/share/ubuntu-
artwork/home/locales/index-C.html", which no package provides with that
given path... IFF epiphany-browser was instead looking for "/usr/share
/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu/index-C.html", I would've suggested
that package "ubuntu-docs" should be added to the list of dependencies
for epiphany-browser...

Of course, one could simply change the homepage to anything they like
and won't be presented with this error again, unless they login as a
newuser (or remove their ~/.gnome2/epiphany directory) and rerun
epiphany, so this bug is trivial...

[Bug 403609] Re: Karmic - Gnome volume keyboard shortcuts do not affect gnome-volume-control-applet

2009-09-13 Thread abujafar
I have a similar problem (if not the same). I figured out that keyboard
shortcuts operate on "Master Volume" instead gnome-volume-applet let you
choose the channel to track. In my case, the channel "Master" doesn't
affect the output volume at all. The real master volume is instead
"Headphone". This is a common problem due to non perfect sound card
detection at kernel-level, and explains the channel chooser option in
gnome-volume-applet.

For desktop consistency, you should force keyboard shortcuts to operate
on the channel chosen in gnome-volume-applet.

[Bug 209520] Re: unclear error when lanman authentication is refused on the server

[Bug 428902] [NEW] Nautilus cannot copy a remote directory

2009-09-13 Thread Sanne Wouda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I try to copy a directory from an smb:// share to a local
directory, nautilus gives me an error message and only creates a file
with the name of the remote directory in the local directory. This is
when using drag and drop in nautilus.

The error message says:

Error while copying "remote_dir".
There was an error copying the file into /home/sanne/local_dir.
More details >
No such file or directory

Things that /do/ work:
Copying a file from a remote smb:// share to a local directory.
Copying a directory from a remote smb:// share to another directory on the same
share.
Copying a directory from a remote smb:// share to a local directory from within
a terminal by using a `cp ~/.gvfs/remote_share/remote_dir ~`.

I'd be happy to provide any additional information.

Thanks for your attention.

running.Did "update/partial upgrade" with "update manager". Did 5
bootups with one task each. No problems. Have put in 6hrs using the
machine processing pictures, internet research, email, usb drives,
hisrorical research, Oo3 Writer, and Presentations. Ubuntu 910 is
running well on this laptop.
Display is excellent, pages centered, power management is excellent.
Firefox3 is excellent. All systems go at this time.

[Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-09-13 Thread Scott Howard
@mac: that warning was placed in to see if the conditions causing the
idle were still occuring in x. The author of GPM believes that the three
patches should have fixed it (and ubuntu has the three patches), but if
you are seeing the warnings, that means the bugs still remains in x
somewhere.

I don't know enough about x to help though. Does anyone else still see
this? You can try posting a response on Richard's blog, the GPM mailing
list, or a bug report saying that all patches have been applied, you
aren't getting blanking, but you are getting the warning (is that
correct?). It may be that the warning should be just removed.

@sergio and matt:
bug 385633 doesn't point here, it points to bug 413168. Could you check that
out and see if it describes your problem? If those two bugs are different
(413168 and 385633), please un-duplicate the bug and add your information.

[Bug 428861] [NEW] evolution account wizard cannot be finished

2009-09-13 Thread Brendan Martens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When launching evolution for the first time on a fresh install of
karmic, the "Evolution Setup Assistant" brings you through all the
steps, but at the end it says "Click "Apply" to save your settings.",
but there is no apply button, just cancel, back (grayed out), and
forward.

If I'm not mistaken the setup assistant is the only way to add a new
account with Evolution, so this makes evolution impossible to use on a
fresh install of karmic.

This is from the 20090912 daily alternate image, but I did upgrade all
my packages via apt once I got everything installed.

I am attaching a screenshot of the Evolution Assistant for reference.

[Bug 428857] [NEW] evolution can't fetch gmail imap anymore

2009-09-13 Thread Taylor "Ripps" L-Wren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

For the last couple of days I've been unable to access my gmail accounts
through evolution.
I've tried everything I can think of, messing with firewall ports, playing
around with settings on my router, and playing around with ports in evolution,
but nothing is working.
I've even verified that the imap server is up by pinging imap.gmail.com.

I don't know what else to do, can someone please help?

[Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons

2009-09-13 Thread Dave Gilbert
The buttons_have_icons one is already starting to show up lots of apps
that have dialogs that look wrong with it on where some buttons get them
and some others don't and are smaller.

Given that people are saying that this is an upstream thing that's
already been decided can someone tell me what the appropriate upstream
discussion list for this is (even if they won't like to here it).

Dave
