[Bug 430494] [NEW] gdm upstart script fails to start gdm
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm I just upgraded on Karmic (16th Sept) and gdm now fails to start using upstart. During boot I see messages that say gdm is starting, stopping and respawning too fast. Then if I try `sudo start gdm` it says it returns a PID, but gdm doesn't start. Running `sudo status gdm` shows that gdm is stopped/waiting. I will attach the log files, but they don't seem terribly helpful. I am able to start gdm from the command line with `sudo /usr/sbin/gdm` and I can start X with `startx`. The problem seems to be in the upstart script, but I don't know how to debug them. You have been subscribed to a public bug: Since about a month ago, Evolution has suddenly stopped sending outbound mail after several items have been successfully sent. After some period of time where sending mail works fine, something in Evolution causes mail to start piling up in the Outbox. If I close Evolution and re-open it and then hit Send/Receive the mail gets sent. There are other users that have this exact same issue as evidenced by posts on ubuntuforums.org. What I've observed is that if I start Evolution from within a Terminal, it does not exhibit this behavior. [Bug 430343] Re: Evolution crashes when new message arrives and mouse controlled by Synergy
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 67188] Re: Error activating XKB configuration. - Requires manual xorg.conf editing
Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps I am in the wrong bug - but 327963 doesn't seem to be right for me either. In effect, I have no need for any variant of the Mac keyboard. I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 (now running Karmic, though the problem was also in Jaunty). I installed VirtualBox 3.0 to run XP and everything was working prefectly (i.e. in XP, to get to the Alt-F4 key, I would still have to use the Mac configuration of ALT+FN+F4). I was happy. Then for some reason I lost the Keyboard in the Host (although a plugged USB KB works). At the same time, the keyboard in XP went to a generic 105 - meaning the that I can't now access the FN key to get to Home/End/F-keys, etc. To correct, this I attempted to specify to Ubuntu that I had a Mac Keyboard with US layout. This was where I ran into this bug. The only way I could fix it was to go back to a Generic 102 (or 105) keyboard. Ubuntu still interprets the key-presses correctly. [Bug 430583] [NEW] New GDM login screen counter-intuitive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Looking at Karmic Alpha 5: On logging on for the first time, the user only sees two buttons. Restart or Shutdown. Many users will only look at the buttons. Worse the login user name is already highlighted by default (only one user after first install) - it is not at all obvious that you should click on an already highlighted user name to bring up a password prompt. I believe this needs some work to make it more friendly, usable and intuitive. I'd suggest a Login button, even if all it does is act the same as clicking on the highlighted user name. Not have the user name highlighted, unless you also display the password box. At the moment I know most of my family would try clicking on a button or Other... in the hope that something would work. [Bug 430579] [NEW] When selecting part of an HTML email and replying only to that part, Evolution removes line breaks
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Evolution has a great feature where you can reply to a small part of an email by selecting only the needed part and using the reply function. This works very well for plain text emails, but for HTML emails the selected part becomes the quoted part of a new HTML email, but all the line breaks of the original message (new lines, br/ tags) are stripped off so you see the original email as one long line - regardless of how many lines or paragraphs the selected text contains. This makes replying to long HTML messages a tedious process where I have to debate if I rather select the text I want to reply to and then spend time putting back the line breaks where I remember them to be, or just reply to everything and edit away what I don't need. [Bug 67188] Re: Error activating XKB configuration. - Requires manual xorg.conf editing
So let me get this right: you're now working with a USB keyboard plugged into your MacBook Pro? Is it a Mac keyboard, or some other, more PCish keybord? If the latter, then Generic is most definitely the way to go, I'd say. When you claim that a Generic 102 keyboard was the only way, have you tried configuring a Mac model with a simple (i.e. not mentioning mac) US layout, as I suggested? I know little about VirtualBox, but I assume that it the ransfer of key events from the host OS to the guest OS works on the level of scan codes, not characters. I don't know whether these scan codes are passed dirctly as received, or rather generated according to some kind of virtual keyboard the guest sees. In any case, I assume that keyboard layout configured in the host should have little to do with this. Instead, twaking configuration options in the guest OS might help. But I suggest you ask these questions using the launchpad question facility, some mailing list, or similar. -- Error activating XKB configuration. - Requires manual xorg.conf editing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67188 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 429832] Re: sound preferences crashes while changing output device
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file.
And I thought I was being so clear.. :( Forget VB for a minute.. Currently my Keyboard model is Generic 102 (was previously 105). My layouts are USA Mac and Germany (thought I haven't yet used that layout - so in essence, we're only concerned with USA MAC (which is setup as default and which is working). If I change the Keyboard model to Apple/MacBook/MacBook Pro - this is when I get the error reported in this bug. (Although the keyboard continues to work otherwise fine) That's all with the inbuilt keyboard. The external one is only a work around for the VB issue. [Bug 430207] Re: Constantly resizing GDM login box is disconcerting
The attached image 'gdm-bouncing-castle.png' shows half-a-dozen different sizes of the GDM login box during a 10 second period of time. The was generated from doing: * $ while true ; do DISPLAY=:3 sudo recordmydesktop ; done * New Session... login * Playing the ogv at 1/10 speed in vlc and taking screenshots * cropping with mogrify -crop 368x500+456+189 * manually combining side-by-side in Gimp The randomness is an artifact of the GDM login and _not_ of the video recording or screenshoting. The problem appears to be repeated dynamic updates of the login window without disabling the dynamic relayout during the update. (Not wrapped with gtk_container_disable_resize() and gtk_container_enable_resize() (?)). However container re-layout is not the whole issue as---seen from the first capture on the left---the dialogue first appears with all buttons greyed out as disabled and no users in the list. ** Attachment added: gdm-bouncing-castle.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31896742/gdm-bouncing-castle.png -- Constantly resizing GDM login box is disconcerting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430207 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

OK, now gladly disregarding VB and your external keyboard. My advice is to 1. change keyboard layout from USA Mac to USA and 2. change keyboard model from Generic to Apple/MacBook/MacBook Pro. Order is relevant if you want to avoid error messages in between. If that works for you, then bug 327963 applies.
