[Bug 432263] [NEW] Generating previews disrupts scroll position
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus When a disk full of pictures (for example) is inserted and viewed in Nautilus, it generates previews one-by-one. These previews are slightly larger than the placeholder icon, so as the previews are generated, higher rows will expand and push off lower rows. This makes it impossible to scroll to the bottom of the list, because the bottom keeps receding as the upper rows expand. To fix this, the behavior of Nautilus should be modified to preserve the scroll position relative to the selected file, not relative to the top of the list. [Bug 204413] Re: nautilus memory leak
I can confirm this bug and reliably reproduce it, after suffering from it for a long time seemingly randomly without understanding what caused it, and finally noticing a strange coincidence tonight (see below). Also I can maybe tell why and how it happens by guesswork ... === Conditions to reproduce the bug === * nautilus in icon view, with thumbnails enabled, * any video file for which nautilus has had a thumbnail generated At this step the tentative conclusion is that the bug is related to video thumbnailing support, however the totem-video-thumbnailer program seems fine, and is not executed by nautilus when the bug happen anyway. === First method to trigger the bug === * Select the video file in a nautilus window or on the desktop Symptoms: * lots of disk accesses happen * meanwhile nautilus' resident memory progressively increase by *exactly* the size of the video file, as reported by gnome-system-monitor (this is usually barely noticeable with small video files but gets problematic with 4GB ones ...) * it then frees all the memory allocated during the previous step * changing folder or closing the nautilus window during step 2 is generally enough to interrupt the process and make it restore the allocated memory prematurely. That leads me to the tentative conclusion that nautilus is copying the file entirely in its memory, to do stuff with it. The question remaining is then what could that stuff be ? === Second method to trigger the bug === * increase the zoom level to over 150% (ie from 200% upward) Symptoms: * same as with first method, seemingly with each video file in the folder one at a time when there is more than one present A few considerations: * Thumbnails generated by totem-video-thumbnailer (the png files in ~/.thumbnails) are all 128px wide (the 'normal' size subfolder); * at 100% zoom level, they are displayed by nautilus at width 96px, at 150% it's 128px wide. * Nautilus does thumbnailing of image files internally (without calling an external helper like it does for videos), and also store 128px wide thumbnails for image files; * when needed, ie when zoom level is over 150%, it automatically rereads image files to provide non-blurry thumbnails with higher resolutions, which it seems to only keep in memory (these do not end in ~/.thumbnails). === Conclusion: how the bug happen (plausibly) === * Nautilus has a routine for regenerating thumbnails of higher resolutions when zooming in, which for some reason is also called when simply selecting a file (as a preemptive step maybe ?) * This routine works by copying all the content of the file to be thumbnailed into memory (which seems unavoidable for an *image* file) *** the bug is here *** That routine is called by nautilus for all files which have a thumbnail, without checking the filetype first (silly nautilus) * As a consequence, the entire video file is copied into memory, before nautilus (or maybe gdk-image-loader or whatever it's called) realize it doesn't know what to do with it and frees the memory. As an aside this means one could theoretically reproduce this bug with files of any type, as long as they are thumbnailed (and not directly by nautilus like image files) and are large enough for the bug to be noticeable, however those conditions are only ever fulfilled in practice by videos. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Confirmed -- nautilus memory leak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 144830] Re: gnome-power-manager doesn't recognize battery removed
This bug is partially fixed in karamic. This is, now gnome power manager does recognize the disappearance/reappearance of the battery However if you boot without battery, gnome power manager will 'think' you don't have one even if you add one. You have to login/logout to work around this. I had long talk with kernel developers, and we discovered that patches I did mention don't work correctly. Besides there is strong opinion that current behavior is correct. To fix rest of this problem, I was told that the developer will write new interface to indicate that system has a battery 'bay' When this is done, g-p-m can use that to show battery settings instead of fact that battery is present. -- gnome-power-manager doesn't recognize battery removed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 429616] Re: x display manager won't open session on next free vt
Sebastien I beg to differ. Though sure this is not a critical bug, it certainly is one since it's well documented that new vts should be created sequentially, vt7, vt8, etc... Also before I came to the startx "discovery" I've found quite a few complaints, some very old dating from hardy or 2005 (like this https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu- users/2005-November/056772.html) from a standard user). I'm sure many people quit complaining as they assume that vt8 anyway is allocated to usplash and have not been told you can redirect it. I can say myself this is a regression as it worked ok in Feisty/Gutsy. More importand yet, there are a number of indirect bugs probably related to this, like bug #172444 running since Gutsy Also please note that the behaviour occurs inside gdm but also from pure startx command. For the time being I've modified gdm to start at vt9. Startx then launches at vt7 and a second startx session launches at vt...10. Could you maybe give a hint of which file I should hack to get startx behaving as specified or is it hardcoded ? Bottom line, I would ask you to raise to medium so that I can see it fixed one day. [Bug 328980] Re: xkbcomp errors should be displayed
The new one I opened requests that users be told to include their .xsession-errors in bug reports, which is a first step. So if a user encounters some xkbcomp error, and wants to report a bug about it, then he will include a portion of that error log file, and the resulting bug report will be more likely to be useful to developers, as THEY can find the xbcomp errors. This one here is about displaying the xkbcomp errors directly to user himself, which should be our final goal. So if the user encounters some xkbcomp error, some window pops up and mentions the full error message, just as xkbcomp reported it on its standard error. The user himself can then decide whether that information is useful to him in resolving the issue all by himself, or whether he needs to file a bug report. In short, the difference is between being told a file likely to contain the error message, or being told the error message itself. The first is easy to implement, and bug #430705 has a patch. The latter, which this bug here is about, is much more difficult. I guess there are two general approaches. One would pass the error message using normal function call interfaces. As the function was originated by the xkbcomp execution in libxklavier, libxklavier would be the resonable place to pick up this error message and pass it up the chain. Therefore I marked all packages in the chain as affected, and am still not sure why exactly you believe that these are "not useful". The second approach to fixing this bug here would be to have gnome- settings-daemon redirect its stderr somewhere else (like a pipe, a temporary file, or something similar) before calling out to libgnomekbd. Then, if something went wrong, it could use that captured error output and display it to the user. Feels a bit hackish to redirect stderr of the current process just to get error messages of some child forked off by some lib. But this solution could in fact be implemented in gsd alone, without libxklavier or libgnomekbd. I guess I prefer the first approach, as it's much cleaner and more flexible in the long run. -- xkbcomp errors should be displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/328980 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 431262] [NEW] gdm/X restart when switching to virtual terminal
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Gdm / X restarts to login screen, when switching to virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) while it is changing screen resolution or frequency. This can be demonstrated eg. when you switch to virtual terminal just after you submitted login and password on the login screen. Gdm restarts and you have to login again. Same crash occurs, when you execute fullscreen game in Wine and before game displays its contents, you switch to virtual terminal. When observing this problem first time (maybe a year ago) I thought it is a bug of Wine. When I tried switching to virtual terminal while logging in, I decided to report this, because it is probably different bug. Bug is IMHO in gdm, xserver or xrandr. gdm 2.27.90-0ubuntu6 xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 Release Ubuntu karmic (9.10), but older releases are (at least partially) affected too. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete -- gdm/X restart when switching to virtual terminal https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/431262 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 431922] [NEW] dead_stroke broken in some applications
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The dead_stroke diacritic key doesn't work in gnome applications. Firefox is affected as well. It works in KDE applications (e.g. kaffeine) and in X11 (e.g. xev). When entering dead_stroke and 'd', only 'd' is generated. You must enable fi_FI.UTF-8 as locale and use the Finnish default keyboard (Kotoistus) for the dead_stroke to work. As a result, new Finnish SFS 5966 keyboards, which have the dead_stroke key, do not function correctly when using gnome applications. [Bug 432038] Re: Evolution segfaults on recurrent calendar set
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 432074] [NEW] Run Dialog uses icon for CD/DVD Creator when you type "nautilus"
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel The run dialog (alt-f2) displays the icon for "CD/DVD Creator" when you type "nautilus". This seems to be caused by the way panel-run-dialog.c matches the entered command to a .desktop-file: It iterates (probably alphabetically) through the .desktop-files and does fuzzy_command_match() on the Exec=-line in it and the string you entered in the dialog. brasero-nautilus.desktop is looked at before nautilus.desktop and contains Exec=nautilus --no-default-window --no-desktop burn:/// which matches the entered string "nautilus". OK, the spec http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/jar/jar.html says "A JAR file is essentially a zip file that contains an optional META-INF directory." So the META-INF directory may not always exist. Also, I couldn't find any mention in the spec (or other docs from sun) of file magic for jar files. [Bug 309778] Re: KDE always associates *.jar with the zip mime type
I haven't looked at the jar spec lately, but it should be a safe assumption that all jar files have a META-INF folder. I don't think you can assume a fixed location for it though. Also, this report seems to be focused on so-called 'executable' jar files, which have the distinction of defining a Main-Class property in the META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file. For reference, here http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/jar/index.html is a general overview; I'm sure there's a more technical spec available too. -- KDE always associates *.jar with the zip mime type https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309778 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to shared-mime-info in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 432024] [NEW] Keyboard layout initialization
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal There seems to be a problem with the gnome keyboard initialization. I boot into runlevel 3, then start X with 'ssh-agent startx'. I have caps lock redefined as additional control key. But after starting X, caps lock acts as caps lock. I need to go to System->Preferences->Keyboard->Layouts->LayoutOptions. [Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration
Thanks for these new tests! Something seems weird to me: the commands I asked you to run did not print the messages they should when creating an user. Did you Ctrl+C before creating the user? Maybe I was not clear enough: you should run these commands, and reproduce the procedure without stopping them. The explanation of the problem is somewhat simple here: if the user list is empty, when creating an user, the tool will try to make system users list match the list it knows about, which is empty. Some deletions must go wrong, and this can eventually stop the user from even creating test. I'd like to fundamentally change this behavior for the next version, but for now we may still fix the bug that makes the list empty. Another information I'd need: does the message > (users-admin:3423): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error > communicating with the > backends: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote > application did not > send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply > timeout expired, > or the network connection was broken. appear before you try to create the user? If so, please have a look at /var/log/auth.log and report if you find errors concerning D-BUS (or attach the file).
