If I remount the disk under the current user everything is fine. Modification time is preserved. 6. I believe that there are some circumstancies under which Nautilus cannot preserve mtime. [Bug 433219] [NEW] Seahorse generates RSA 'sign only' keys that aren't sign-only
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: seahorse Trying to generate an RSA (sign only) key with Seahorse actually generates a single RSA key with key flags that say it's used for everything, including encryption and authentication. This happens in Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, and Karmic. Steps to reproduce: 1. In Seahorse, create a new PGP key. Under Advanced Key Options choose RSA (sign only) before creating the key. 2. In a terminal, enter `gpg --edit-key 01234567` (where 01234567 is the keyid of the generated key) Result: gpg shows something like this: pub 4096R/01234567 created: 2009-09-19 expires: never usage: SCEA trust: ultimate validity: ultimate Expected result: Under usage:, the key should show just the signing/certifying flags. [Bug 427268] [NEW] Font hinting set defaultly slight, not full
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I installed Ubuntu on my new HP Compaq 615, the default font settings looked quite ugly. It was set to [Subpixel smoothing] and to improve the looks I changed it to [Best shapes], which wasn't ideal but it was definetly an improvement. After a few days I noticed the [Details...] button in Appereance dialog and found out that when [Subpixel smoothing] is set, than [Font hinting] is set to slight. After I changed it to full, the font appereance improved incredibly. So after installation Ubuntu should set the default font to Subpixel smoothing and Full hinting. As for now it sets only Subpixel smoothing with Slight hinting, which looks significantly worse, at least on my notebook. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Font hinting set defaultly slight, not full https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 433130] Re: desktop not always shown correctly
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. You have been subscribed to a public bug: After installing 9.04 the system has started to freeze. No issue with 8.10 and earlier. The screen suddely gets scrabbled and the system stops responding (to anything). Hard reset is the only way to regain control by restarting the system. :~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.04 Release:9.04 MB: ASUS M2NPV-VM using the integrated GeForce 6150 GPU together with the proporitary nvidia-180 driver. I have tried older versions with no noticed impact. Visual desktop effects are disabled The problem comes randomly but seems to be related to system activity. Typical is when opening a mail message to read (evolution) or starting an application or responding to a dialog. Also performing the system update seems to trigger a freeze. The frozen screen shows a very consistent picture (see attachment). A small fraction of the screen seems to be repeated causing a staggered pattern. The problem could possibly be unrelated to the graphics but since the screen consistently frozen I kind of lean towards blaming the graphics... Uptime before freeze between 1 minute to 1 day. Sometimes the drive lamp continues to indicate activity but perhaps that is only the state at freeze. After 1-2 weeks after a lot of reboots the sound started to be corrupted. I do not know if it is related and indicated broken HW or if the error is independent. [Bug 412440] Re: gnome-disk-utility doesn't use new notifications
Karmic Alpha 6. I have had the notification area icon show up on 2 machines of three and on two separate disks on one of the machines. Two of those disks definitely showed S.M.A.R.T. problems though I've not yet checked the third. Apparently I missed the initial notification in all cases and multiple times. I cannot say the notification never appeared since it is transient, but I am suspicious. But that is not why I am adding to this report: 1) Clicking or right clicking on the notification area icon did nothing (which is wrong) in all cases but one, 2) In one case an installation seemed to be stalled (probably due to the bad disk) and after multiple attempts to [left right] on the icon, a S.M.A.R.T. report appeared in a new window and the system was totally frozen. Upstream bugzilla seems to have problem attaching files atm [1] so I'm attaching it here first. It changes the NautilusQuery api, the savedSearch file format (compatible with previous format) and updates the simple search. [Bug 275495] Re: nautilus search, when several places are choosen only the latest is searched
Wonderful news :-) To patch stuff is beyond me, but while you'r coding, may I be so bold and make a wish? I would really like to set depth for every folder, how many levels of subfolders that will be searched. I'm thinking of a numerical value that you could enter (perhaps a dropdown list) right next to where you choose the folder. This way it would be easy to merge some folders, and you'd get a really smart an easy to use search folder funtionality. Or should I just make an idea on ubuntu brainstorm instead? [Bug 405227] Re: gdm fails to start if /var/log/gdm does not exist
This bug is about GDM breaking when a user remove system directories that they should never remove. Importance Critical would be ridiculous, I actually think even Medium is too much. It is an incorrect assumption that it is OK to tidy up by running rm -rf /var/log/*. Doing that is never correct, AFAIK /var/cache is the only directory under /var where the FHS say you may remove anything at any time. There is probably many other programs that can't recreate their own log directory, especially programs running as non-root. Only root can write to /var/log, so giving write permissions for other system uid/gid is often the reason that an application have a separate directory under /var/log. (SSD) Users that like to put /var/log on tmpfs will need to sync files to/from it at boot/shutdown, just as if they put any other system directory on tmpfs. If there are guides/howtos suggesting to mount an empty tmpfs on /var/log at boot then those guides needs to be fixed. [Bug 405227] Re: gdm fails to start if /var/log/gdm does not exist
Say what you wish. Here are two facts: 1) GDM should not explode because its logging directory doesn't exist. Logging is strictly a feature. This statement goes along with every other program that does not inherently require logging. 2) A non-trivial quantity of users will have GDM fail because its logging directory doesn't exist. GDM can a) recreate its logging directory structure, or b) emit a warning; both of these methods are foolproof, simple, and safe. All in all, the dangers of keeping current behavior are great while changing behavior to something less flawed is extremely redeeming. -- gdm fails to start if /var/log/gdm does not exist https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433352] [NEW] [Karmic] No audio
Public bug reported: NOTE: This is my first bug report from System Testing so please forgive me if I do not have enough info (as I don't know what info is automatically given by System Testing). I installed Karmic and like it as intel graphic is no longer slow here. But the problem is that there is no sound at all. When I try to play an audio, there is no error message just that the song is not played (the play button change to pause but the play time is always at 0:00 and no any sound). I can't also hear any void when play youtube file. So I run System Testing and it bring me here. If you need any information please let me know. #1 $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch) Release:9.10 #2 Don't know #3 A sound #4 No sound ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 CheckboxCommand: gst_pipeline_test -t 2 'audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink' CheckboxTest: playback_auto Date: Sat Sep 19 20:34:15 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 Package: python-gst0.10 0.10.16.3-1 ProcEnviron: SHELL=/bin/bash PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-10.34-generic SourcePackage: gst0.10-python Tags: checkbox-bug Uname: Linux 2.6.31-10-generic i686 ** Affects: gst0.10-python (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug checkbox-bug i386 -- [Karmic] No audio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gst0.10-python in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433360] [NEW] multiple workspaces not shown in workspace switcher
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel The workspace switcher applet on the gnome panel only displays the current workspace, although I have four. I can still switch between workspaces but only the current one is shown on the panel. This is despite that in the Preferences box the option Show all workspaces is selected (not Show only the current workspace). This worked fine in jaunty but is now broken in karmic alpha.
