[Bug 460013] Re: Cannot set wallpaper. Just black screen intead of selected wallpaper.

I believe the affected application is Appearance Preferences -
Backgrounds tab.

"xprop WM_CLASS" returns
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "gnome-appearance-properties", "Gnome-appearance-properties"

[Bug 401823] Re: (firefox:24993): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead - overeager XID caching

2009-10-24 Thread Christian Niemeyer
The critical thing about this bug is, that it floods .xsession-errors
from usually a few kb to megabytes.

Imho, this causes annoying useless disk activity/capacity and probably a
slightly slowdown/overhead.

This should be fixed.

[Bug 460219] [NEW] Gnome Panels freeze in place sometimes.

2009-10-24 Thread Vinny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgnome-desktop-2-11

I have the two default panels set at the top and bottom. I have enabled
to auto hide these panels in order to save screen space on my netbook.
The only problem is that sometimes the panels will freeze and stay in
place without hiding back down into place. Then I can't reach whatever
is down or up there in the application without un-maximizing the window
then resizing it. This occurs not too often however.

[Bug 460142] [NEW] Rotated desktop is 180 degrees wrong at log in

2009-10-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I rotated my LCD 180 degrees to portrait mode using the screen dialog in Gnome
System/Preferences/Display
Everything works fine apparently until you reboot from cold, the log in screen
remains at the old landscape orientation until a few moment after you have
entered a correct password to log in.
This means that the mouse and typing are very difficult unless to swing the LCD
back round to type and then swing it back.

I don't expect grub output to be the right way round, but for a polished
experience, once the Ubuntu logo is seen things should be correct.

[Bug 460215] [NEW] Brasero does not recognize my cd/dvd drive while Gnomebaker does

2009-10-24 Thread kikbguy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Brasero does not recognize my cd/dvd drive and the dvd in my drive and
therefore never allows me to burn a cd/dvd. On the other hand,
Gnomebaker works perfectly. I have noticed this same problem with
Brasero and solution with Gnomebaker on every distrobution of ubuntu I
have tried extending back to 8.04. Please consider either fixing
brasero so it is as good as Gnomebaker for cd burning/hardware
recognition or consider replacing Brasero with Gnomebaker as the default
cd burning application.

[Bug 460201] [NEW] cannot mount second or third SATA hard drive

2009-10-24 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Triple boot system (XP, 9.10-Beta, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first SATA
drive
9.04-rtm recognizes second and third SATA drives, displays proper label for
each and allows me to mount following authorization.
9.10-Beta incorrectly displays drive size and the fact that it contains and
extended partition as the label. Something like 620 GB Extended. A time-out
error occurs a short while after authorization has been completed.
karmic-desktop-i386 2009-10-20_2325.iso was downloaded using 9.04. Unetbootin
was used on 9.04 to create an installation USB.
All three SATA drives are attached to the same controller. All three drives
function properly under 9.04-rtm.
Only the first SATA drive functions properly under 9.10-Beta. Someone had to
be exhausted for this to be overlooked in a sanity check.
The partition used for the 9.10-Beta install was formatted as Ext3 during the
installation. The failure occurred following the initial install and also
after completion of the update process earlier this evening.

2009-10-24 Thread yze
No USB issue here (U100) - just flashing brightness.
I added (on Ubuntu) the "brightness applet" to my panel, and with it, I can
adjust the LCD brightness with no flashing at all.
Also, if you use the function keys and it starts that whole blinking thing, if
you then adjust the brightness with the brightness applet on the panel, the
blinking stops.

[Bug 460168] [NEW] Videos not shown in Nautilus

2009-10-24 Thread Vinicius Seixas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Sometimes when I am browsing a folder with videos (usually AVI files),
Nautilus just do not show them. I found out that if I turn off the
thumbnail generation (option
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_image_thumbnails=never in gconf-editor)
the videos icons come back. It looks like there is a problem with the
video thumbnailer, but besides that I think that Nautilus should show
the default media icon if it cannot show the thumbnail, it is very
annoying and confusing when a file "disappears" from the file browser.

I am using latest update of Karmic.

[Bug 432598] Re: can_suspend and can_hibernate values aren't respected

2009-10-24 Thread Daniel Holbert
FWIW: This worked in Jaunty, so this is a new bug in Karmic.

This is particularly important for people running with encrypted swap
partitions, because hibernate doesn't play nicely with encrypted swap
yet. Whenever I shutdown / suspend / restart, I'm constantly afraid
that I'll accidentally cliick the button for "hibernate" instead, and
have who-knows-what happen :(

[Bug 460151] [NEW] Desktop launchers for applications created from launchers manually created in alacarte have identical filenames

2009-10-24 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

I use Docky, and add fancy launchers for Websites I like (in gOS style).
For some reason, I noticed it was really difficult to add some icons I
had created to Docky, and I figured out that it is because Alacarte is
naming all of the icons I was creating with the same filename.

For example, I create a launcher in Alacarte using xdg-open
"http://www.wikipedia.org";. The entry works perfect in the Main Menu.
I open the menu, and navigate to the item I just created and Right Click
> Add this Launcher to Desktop. Even though the Desktop icon is named
properly, examining the Desktop folder with the Terminal reveals that
the icon's filename is "alacarte-made.desktop", instead of
Wikipedia.desktop.

Repeating the process with a different website, such as maps.google.com,
creates a file in the Desktop folder called alacarte-made
(copy).desktop.

The files should be created with the name of the Icon, and not alacarte-
made.desktop. In contrast, launchers created by Right Clicking the
Desktop > Create Launcher have filenames named after the icon, and not
the creating application.

I have attached a screenshot demonstrating the bug. If you look at the
screenshot, you will notice that I have 3 .desktop launchers in my
Desktop folder, which are also visible on the Desktop to the right of
the Terminal window. The Gmail and Google Wave icons were created in
Alacarte, and then sent to the Desktop using the method I explained in
the 2nd paragraph above. You will notice that the filenames of the two
icons are alacarte-made.desktop and alacarte-made (copy).desktop. The
Google Reader icon was created by Right Clicking the Desktop directly,
and you will notice it's file is named correctly.

[Bug 383927] Re: endless loading in nautilus / some files missing

2009-10-24 Thread alphac
I have a weird hobby of collecting wallpapers. It the moment I have well
over a thousand of them, but I am starting to get the same problem as
others have posted. I didn't seem to get the bug until I updated to
ubuntu 9.10, although I am not sure if that is just bad timing or not.

Hopefully this can get fixed soon, it is a really annoying glitch.

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-10-24 Thread Chris Balcum
Uh, yes there is. Wine and Crossover still do not support Pulse. And for
that reason I refuse to use it.

On top of that, ALSA alone has never, EVER given me a problem, whereas
adding Pulse into the mix only causes them.

I find it completely preposterous that I can now not add the gnome-
volume-control-applet to my panel, nor access the gnome-volume-control
applet, without having Pulse installed. This is a complete joke. Forcing
me to use a buggy sound system in order to just be able to control my
volume control from the desktop? Seriously, you gotta be kidding me.

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-10-24 Thread #Ernesto
Does anyone have problems with USB detection? ive been running karmic
(clean install from alpha) on an MSI100 with no problem till last
update. Then the brightness issue started. Also since then my system
cant see the USB ports. When i connect something, there is no event on
dmesg. I searched this bug and there where at least two people wich had
the same TWO problems (USB & brightness). I'm guessing USB problem is in
in HAL.th Could both be related?

[Bug 260805] Re: Copying files to external HDD via firewire hangs

2009-10-24 Thread Danny Piccirillo
** Description changed:

When transferring files over firewire to external storage, especially
large transfers, the transfer will hang. This appears to be hardware
specific, and i'm not sure if it's faulty hardware, or a a bug. My
firewire card seems to read from external sources just fine, but large
- file transfers are always unsuccessful.
+ file transfers are always unsuccessful. Oddly enough, if i disconnect
+ and reconnect the device, and then initiate the same file transfer, it
+ seems to pick up from where it left off mid-file.

[Bug 460125] [NEW] AppArmor not allowing evince to read files needed for theming

2009-10-24 Thread ApathyFace
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

This appears to be similar to several bugs already posted and fixed
related to the evince AppArmor profile -- but it seems that in my case,
the files being blocked are actually inside of my home folder (~/.icons/
and ~/.themes), which appears to be different than some of the other
bugs.

When AppArmor is active, the evince GTK theme is the ugly boxy fallback
theme instead of my custom theme. When I disable AppArmor and start up
evince, my theme comes up just fine.

Evince version: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 via update-manager.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
Date: Sat Oct 24 20:21:02 2009
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10

implemented in gtk

it is enough (and more appropriate) to add "gtk-recent-files-max-age=0" to
~/.gtkrc-2.0 (create the file if it is not already there).
it works for me.

[Bug 443146] Re: No audio on Intel HDA audio.

2009-10-24 Thread jmr
Solved for me with a small workaround after googleing a bit, it is not
the best solution but it will suffice until an official fix is released.
My hardware config:

j...@wopr:/etc/modprobe.d
$ lspci -nn | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02)

j...@wopr:/etc/modprobe.d
$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC883
Codec: LSI Si3054

The workaround:

sudo gvim /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add the following line at the end of the file:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

Finally after every reboot you must do:

killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload

And now, of course, I cannot replicate the crash. I am starting to think

I will continue to test over the next couple of days, but as I said

end user). Should a different bug report be made for this deficiency?

[Bug 456093] Re: Duplicated entries of Okular in "Open With" -> "Other Application"

2009-10-24 Thread A. Walton
This is an intractable problem to solve from Nautilus. Application
developers can generate as many desktop files as they like with the same
Name key and there's really nothing we can realistically do with them
(we'd just make the menu/dialog enormous by including bogus things like
the commandline string or adding numbers for duplicate names which don't
really help most users in any way).

It's a trivial problem to solve for misbehaving applications. For a
GNOME example of this, see Brasero during the 2.26 cycle. This package
used to include many desktop files with identical names. It has since
been fixed.

Fix your desktop entries to use different names for calling with
different arguments so that they show up in menus differently. As
Sebastien noted, we can't use NoDisplay (which was the first solution we
tried, and I actually committed it, but had to revert it for
applications which use this with different semantics).

It could be solved by going to FreeDesktop.org and figuring out a better
way to solve this problem, like reviving actions within desktop files,
but this hasn't been seriously proposed by anyone and it's not likely
something we'll implement in Nautilus unless there's a consensus that
it's the way to go, and it will *still* require you to fix your desktop
files.

[Bug 460074] [NEW] applets crash at startup

2009-10-24 Thread Peter Surňák
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

At every startup these applets crash:
- gweather
- multiload
- keyboard
- drivemount

by "crash" I mean dialog is displayed asking if I want to remove or keep for
each of them
see below for output from .xsession-errors:

I add them and configure and they work fine (even after hibernation and wake
up) until next restart - yes, happens every time
- other applets like hamster, deskbar, timer-applet are all ok, no crashes with
them

[Bug 452079] Re: Kile installes Konqueror and Dolphin as recommended dependency

It's not a nautilus bug that installing another file manager overrides
the default handler for inode/directory, and it's a much more complex
problem than that. Furthermore, this seems to have absolutely nothing to
do with nautilus, but instead a packaging bug with 'kile' Recommending

[Bug 460068] [NEW] Unable to play DVD with Encryption

2009-10-24 Thread Eddie Toronto
Public bug reported:

Hi,
Fresh install of 9.10 beta. I've followed the instructions from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs#Ubuntu 9.04 and
9.10 (i386, amd64)
installed libdvdread4 and ran the command sudo
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Using Movie Player (as recommended in Synaptic description for libdvdread4),
the screen greys out.
Using VLC, I get the foolowing output:

Playback failure:
VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disc.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

I had it working in 9.04 so this would be a regression?
