[Bug 481528] Re: Automounted digital camera mounts with incorrect name and does not create camera icon on desktop in Karmic as it did in Jaunty

2009-11-12 Thread Martin Pitt
I reproduced this with a "fake" mass storage camera by adding a DCIM/
folder with some images to my USB stick. I confirm that gvfs detects the
MIME type just fine, but doesn't set a camera icon:

  Volume(0): PittiTest
Type: GProxyVolume (GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu)
ids:
 uuid: '49C5-8913'
 unix-device: '/dev/sdb1'
 label: 'PittiTest'
themed icons: [drive-removable-media-usb] [drive-removable-media]
[drive-removable] [drive]
can_mount=1
can_eject=1
should_automount=1
Mount(0): PittiTest -> file:///media/PittiTest
  Type: GProxyMount (GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu)
  themed icons: [drive-removable-media-usb] [drive-removable-media]
[drive-removable] [drive]
  x_content_types: x-content/image-dcf
  can_unmount=1
  can_eject=1
  is_shadowed=0

Now, there are devices (like my mobile phone) which have more than one
MIME type, so for those a camera icon isn't appropriate. But if the only
MIME type that we detect is x-content/image-dcf, then gvfs should indeed
set a camera icon.

As for the "no icon on desktop", this is because your camera wasn't
automounted after all; your gvfs-mount output has "should_automount=0".
Did you already have it plugged in when starting the GNOME session? If
so, that's bug 472937.

** Changed in: gvfs (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Summary changed:

- Automounted digital camera mounts with incorrect name and does not create
camera icon on desktop in Karmic as it did in Jaunty

[Bug 481169] Re: keyboard layout do not switch to default layout

2009-11-12 Thread sKwa
>> * Is this reproducible?
>> * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
Really? I don't know. I installed Karmic on three machines - for me and for two
my friends and for all of them there was the same problem with switching
keyboard layout. Also I asked other users in forum ubuntology.ru, for some of
them was the same problem, for others was another problem - some times keyboard
did not switch layout by keys sequences, only after switching with mouse switch
start work properly for some time until problem do not return.
Yesterday I did fresh install. When I did installation I didn't choose any
additional layout - only en(USA) language for interface and keyboard layout
(all options by default except partitioning and location). After that I did
update&upgrade, and only after that I added support of russian language for
GUI and keyboard layout. After that I checked layouts switching and... as you
see I decided to report a bug. Just try to add some language (russian for
example :)) choose en(usa) as default layout, open some application (doesn't
meter which app, for example gedit) switch to russian and open few times
another application (for example gnome-terminal). Every time as you open
gnome-terminal layout should switch to default language (USA), but it's not
always happens :(
I don't sure, I think that another problem already was reported - when runs
authorization dialog window (like gksu) so layout doesnt switch to default if
you work with another layout. For example, in gksu will be russian layout and
not usa. It will be nice when authorization required the layout will be english
only, because no one can choose password on another layout.

Sorry for my english, if it impossible to understand tell me I will find
some english speaker that will translate because this problem is very
preventing me because I have to work with 4 languages and do not always
pay attention to layout and not for all that languages I am typing with
blind method

2009-11-12 Thread Troy James Sobotka
There is still an issue with thumbnailing in Nautilus happening with

Any way to diagnose this easily?

[Bug 475090] Re: Karmic /etc/gdm/Xsession fails to source ~/.xsessionrc or apply ~/.Xresources

2009-11-12 Thread Forest
Confirming on xubuntu karmic.

I see that /etc/gdm/Xsession does run the scripts in
/etc/X11/Xession.d/, one of which probably sourced $HOME/.xsessionrc at
some time in the past. However, that script currently sources
"$USERXSESSIONRC", which is not set by gdm's scripts. (It gets set in
/etc/X11/Xession, which never gets run by gdm.) The same situation
exists for $HOME/.Xresources .

[Bug 411898] Re: Add preference to turn off conversation logging

2009-11-12 Thread Steve McGrath
I've sent a patch for this upstream, and I'm attaching a debdiff here.

I've applied the patch to Empathy_2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1 and placed the
resulting packages in my PPA. You may get them from
https://launchpad.net/~smcgrath23/+archive/smcgrath

These packages offer a checkbox in the preferences dialog to
enable/disable conversation logging, as well as a GConf key;
/apps/empathy/conversation/enable_logging.

Hope this is useful to someone.

That sounds like the problem I, too, am having (but in my case, I think
it does not matter what I booted previously; it can happen booting
Karmic twice in a row).

It started after I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 (final),
selecting autologin. Ever since, sometimes it does log in
automatecally, but sometimes it stops me for the password. Like
Jigoita, I have tried gdmsetup.

[Bug 277203] Re: gnome-sound-properties setting to disable login sound not honored

2009-11-12 Thread Simon Ruggier
Sorry to waste your time, but that's a different issue. Ubuntu has
played that drum sound at the gdm prompt since at least 5.10,
independent of the sound settings. I don't know how to disable it,
because it's the only startup sound that didn't bother me (It's very
short and sort of unintrusive, in my opinion). This bug is about the
login sound that plays after you enter your credentials, which to me is
like a tacky remix of the oldschool Mac startup sound (apologies to
whoever made it, but really).

[Bug 66257] Re: Screen blanks when watching movies

2009-11-12 Thread BavarianPH
In Karmic,
CRT Monitor
blanks every 15 minutes &
after 5 or 6 reawakenings, by mouse movement,
looses video signal completetly,
despite any settings,
while viewing a movie, or during mouse & keyboard inactivity.

A reboot or REISUB is necessary to get video signal back.
Pushing the suspend button does not work.

This is not only annoying but a SERIOUS flaw in Karmic Koala 9.10,
power-management is absolutely useless,
screen-saver settings are off.
Movies are Online, different movie-players have no affect on these symptoms.

I am confident in your team to fix this problems.

BavarianPH,

Ubuntu forever!

[Bug 480163] Re: Error mount floppy drive

2009-11-12 Thread Barry Klein
Ubuntu Linux 9.10
Nautilus 2.28.1
Gnome Desktop 2.28.1

NonfreeKernelModules: none
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_AU.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic

The floppy can be mounted with

mount /dev/fd0

as fstab contains

/dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0
0

If the floppy is not mounted, clicking "Places | Floppy Drive" causes
the activity light on the floppy to flash, but nothing else.

Palimpsest gives the message "No Media Detected" whether the floppy is
mounted or unmounted.

[Bug 479826] Re: gnome-panel consuming 100% of CPU and driving up memory

2009-11-12 Thread O. Emmerson
I posted too soon, the bug is still there.
I have more info though.

After editing the fstab file to include lines for external hard drive
and mp3 player the bug reoccurred.

After some testing it seems to be the external hard drive line which causes the
problem.
'UUID=65f23d3e-760c-4349-9bce-3bb952b14924  /media/freeagent1500ext3
relatime,user,data=writeback'
If I add the line to fstab and save the file, gnome-panel immediate starts to
consume massive amounts of CPU. If I comment it out and re-save the file it
immediately stops.

This appears to be connected to the other bug I linked to above. In my
research about that I discovered forum posts about entries in fstab
causing an increase in CPU.

which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
CD's. Help! I don't know what to do, if not that?
+ After upgrade to Karmic, CD/DVD drive no longer works

** Description changed:

- When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected
- to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all
- afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered
- several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox
- no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was
- able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in
- the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor
- would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I
- had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to
- it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and
- open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some
- trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on
- "Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by
- listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it
- would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover
- how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and
- therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no
- avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP!
- please?
-
- Apparently this involves firefox-3.5, and something about /var/log/dist-
- upgrade/. I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but
- most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is
- limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to
- figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to
- play.
+ When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected to

[Bug 481675] [NEW] gvfsd-metadata does not honor laptop-mode

2009-11-12 Thread dlgandalf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

My laptop harddrive constantly wakes up, every 10~70 seconds, due to a
gvfsd-metadata process performing a write operation, while laptopmode is
enabled. I've read that this can only occur when a process invokes a
fsync operation. In my opinion this should not be done in "normal" user
space programs without good reasons. My laptop harddrive is getting a
pretty good beating having to put it's heads back in place every 10s
(worst case), besides that, it's using more battery. I've used iotop and
lm-profiler to test it, laptop-mode works fine with the only exception
of gvfsd-metadata. What is the function/reason that gvfsd-metdata is
always started in the first place?

[Bug 478962] Re: Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item "Unknown" which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play CD's. Help! I don't know wha

2009-11-12 Thread WeatherGod
Doris, this was very useful information, and you did wonderfully. From
this information, I can see that your computer is trying to talk to the
CD player, but isn't quite doing it correctly. This is definitely a
bug.

What I would like to try next is to get your computer fully-up-to-date.
Most likely, your upgrade process was fine, and you likely came from
9.04, 8.10, or 8.04. But first, before we update your computer, it is
always good practice to make sure all your files are backed up on your
thumb drive.

Your thumb drive is 1 GB, which *should* be fine for holding the most
important files that most people have. Insert the thumb drive into the
computer. The window for that drive will open up. Then go to
"Places"->"Home" to open your home folder. You can copy the contents of
your folders by clicking and dragging the folder to the window for your
thumb drive. I don't know what are your most important files, but I
would guess the files in the "Documents" and "Pictures" and "Videos"
would be most important.

Once done, you can then right-click the thumb drive's icon and choose
"Safely remove drive". You may still get a message that the device is
busy, just wait a moment, and it should tell you that it is safe to
remove. You are absolutely right that the choices are confusing. There
are subtle differences, but they aren't important to regular users, and
all would do effectively the same thing.

Once you have backed up your important files, it is time to update.
What that message most likely meant is that you need to first update
*only* those packages first, then reboot, and then finish updating the
rest of them. So, unselect all of the other packages for updates and
see how that goes.

As for your question about why I "bother" to help you. It is because I
personally believe that Ubuntu is a viable alternative for folks like
yourself. I want to make sure that Ubuntu "just works" for people like
you. This problem with the CD drive is unacceptable to me and must be
fixed. Also, I want to see Ubuntu get a good reputation, and word-of-
mouth is important.

[Bug 57784] Re: after xrandr desktop icons can go missing

2009-11-12 Thread Edward
A related issue, captured in bug #408710, is that Nautilus places icons
in "dead space", the unreachable part of the desktop adjacent to the
smaller of two different sized monitors used simultaneously. This is
still a very common use-case for laptop users.

The issue was mentioned in this blog over a year ago, but it seems no
progress has been made: http://blogs.gnome.org/cneumair/2008/09/19

Re: [Bug 457126] Re: Path to file being edited does not appear in title bar

2009-11-12 Thread tiggsy
Hi Pedro

Thanks for that. After enabling Users and Groups (which for some reason
was disabled in the menus) I did what you said, and sure, it works for
files on the home disk. And when I came back to my normal user, I see
that it works in my user too BUT ONLY FOR FILES ON THE "HOME" disk.

All my programming and internet source files are on a separate drive:
sdb. I don't have room for them on the home drive. All I get in the
title bar is (sdb) as the address, no matter where on that disk the file
resides. In Hardy, i got a full path name. So this appears to be a bug
affecting files on drives other than the home drive.

[Bug 481459] Re: Memory leak when PDF objects are dragged around.

2009-11-12 Thread jtniehof
Wow! I can confirm that, with that PDF, a quick drag will make evince
nonresponsive, peg the CPU, and start ramping up the memory usage.
evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.1 from karmic-updates. I have visual effects
disabled, so this is not simply a compiz issue.

This is also present on sid, version 2.28.1-1. The upstream git
repository has a commit (f011461f, 6 Nov) labelled "fix memory leak,"
but I compiled from HEAD and the PDF tehf0x linked still causes the
memory leak. I will try to file upstream.

I also get the

** (evolution:11352): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name

when I run evolution from the CLI, but it doesn't bring evolution down.
Evolution runs well with all POP and IMAP accounts (except google
contact syncing, which is what I'm trying to fix). Perhaps with some
instruction I could help locate the source of this bug?

[Bug 473552] Re: Battery incorrectly reported as critcally low at when almost full

2009-11-12 Thread Ben Shephard
This bug seems to be related to other simalar issues such as Bug #393008
I notice that the power manager applet doesnt recognise the AC has been
unplugged. After running like that for an hour or so shut the machine down.
Restarted later in the day and the indicator now correctly reported battery
power and correct battery level however this soon changed to telling me the
battery was almost empty (7% or so) but still with more than 30 min run time
remaining.

On closer inspection running $ devkit-power --monitor-detail
The battery was incorrectly reported as

energy-full: 88.7883 Wh (or there abouts)
energy-full-design: 26.64 Wh

I didn't get chance to copy this as my machine shut down seconds after I
noticed this. The machine is now on charge and looking at this again I
notice the charge rate is extremely high which cannot be correct

  History (charge):
1258072896 50.999 charging
1258072865 50.609 charging
1258072834 50.268 charging
1258072803 49.683 charging
  History (rate):
1258072896 715.928 charging
1258072865 715.950 charging
1258072834 715.850 charging
1258072803 716.771 charging

The charge graphs are also all over the place. see screen shot at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bshephard/409883/

Bugs in Devicekit-power seem not to be handled by launchpad but I don't
see any way to record the bug upstream either. Documentation also seems
to be incomplete

[Bug 481658] [NEW] Totem's visual effects 100% performance when minimized

2009-11-12 Thread kgeist
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem's visual effects eat up 100% of cpu. There was already a bug
concerning this (closed in 2007 without a fix). My bug is more
particular. I can accept the cpu being busy when painting effects -- no
big deal. But what I wasn't expecting was that minimizing the window or
even moving it to another workspace (not visible at the moment) didn't
prevent Totem from eating 100%. I suppose that Totem still draws the
effects in some sort of back buffer even minimized? For what reason?

[Bug 481654] [NEW] Visulization is frozen after loading system video drivers.

2009-11-12 Thread Robert uses ubuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Um, I submitted a bug report and, I don't really know where to find all
of info that this asks for but I'll do my best. I'm using Ubuntu version
9.10, and I just started a week or two ago so I don't know a lot about
it yet. My problem is a relatively minor one. All I know is that after I
found and installed the correct ATI video drivers for my hp pavillion
dv7 1130us the visualisation froze. Nothing else is wrong that I know
of, I don't even know if those events are related. I was looking at
other reports, and it seems like other people had serious problems
concerning ATI video drivers and Rythmbox. I'm not experiencing any of
this, so maybe this is an improvement. MOstly I'd just like to know what
is going on. Thanks!

[Bug 481643] [NEW] gnome-panel hangs when placed on bottom and enabling autohide

2009-11-12 Thread Kongstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

On a karmic koala updated from 9.04 via the beta the following problem
occurs:

When the panel is placed at the bottom and autohide is enabled, the
panel hangs

On reboot Xorg and gnome-panel uses 100% CPU and hogs the memory (500+mb
each and rising).

I have to remove the setu by
gconftool-2 --shutdown && rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel && pkill gnome-panel

Steps to reproduce:
1. Place panel at bottom
2. Enable autohide

When then panel is at the top autohide works
