[Bug 351754] Re: Gnome-system-monitor crashes due to missing icon

2009-12-10 Thread Sebastian Wiegand
Encountered same problem: gnome-system-monitor shows up and closes again after
few seconds.
This only happens if there is a gnome-terminal open.
system-monitor seems to need a icon file called Terminal.svg (upper case T),
which is not available, but terminal.svg (lower case) is.
After creating symlink system-monitor works again.
I recently removed package xfce4-terminal, which holds the upper case
Terminal.svg file, which system-monitor now seems to miss.

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2009-12-10 Thread Grondr
Daniel: If this bug is truly independent of PulseAudio, then why does
renaming /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg change the behavior?
If your argument is that libcanberra is looking at that file, then why
is it necessary to remove a -PA- cache file to fix the bell after
renaming the file back? Are you saying that libcanberra is dependent
upon and/or writing to files that appear to be owned by PA?

Note that I can repeat all these behaviors from either the 32- or 64-bit
LiveCD, using its default settings, which I -assume- means it's using
metacity and not compiz. By default, module-x11-bell appears to be
commented out, as I said above. So who exactly is stealing X bell
events? And how do we -stop- it from doing so?

Robert, in response to various items:
(a) The reason you don't seem to need the rmmod/modprobe fandango is that
you've been confining your experiments to gnome (or metacity, or whatever).
Try booting in recovery mode and logging into an X-less shell. Assuming you do
-not- have pcspkr blacklisted, then lsmod | grep pcs at that point should show
it. But if you hit rubout at the start of a line in that shell, you'll hear
the bell out your line-out, not from the motherboard speaker. If you
rmmod/modprobe, -then- a rubout there will -not- come out of line-out and
-will- come out of the motherboard. Furthermore, if you type xinit (hence
getting into X but not gnome/metacity), you get the same behavior (you can also
try rebooting and waiting to do the rmmod/modprobe until you xinit if you'd
like to reproduce it the same way). Note that the X bell will have a different
pitch than the non-X bell, which has a different pitch than the motherboard
bell---three pitches in all. But if you do the fandango, you'll get the
motherboard bell, whether you're in X or not. [And note -weird- thing below!]
(b) I think you're right that bug #430203, which I cited as the "slow bell",
did make it into Karmic---I looked at bell.ogg in Audacity and the entire
sample is only 200ms long, and it's got audio for all of it. But the
gnome/metacity bell is still not firing above 1 Hz, so there's a
bug/rate-limiter in there -somewhere-.

WEIRD THING #1: I noticed that, if you're -not- in gnome/metacity
(e.g., either directly in an X-less shell, or in the shell that xinit
gives you), -and- if you've booted with pcspkr -not- blacklisted (so
it's loaded) but have -not- done the rmmod/modprobe fandango (so your
bell is still being intercepted and is coming out of line-out instead of
the motherboard), THE FIRST BELL AFTER AN INACTIVE PERIOD VANISHES. In
other words, you're sitting at en empty line in the shell. You hit
rubout. You hear NOTHING. You wait a couple seconds. You continue to
hear nothing. You hit rubout again. NOW you hear a bell! In fact, I
can repeatably cause non-motherboard bell events to VANISH as long as I
hit rubout no more frequently than about once every six seconds. If I
hit it more frequently than that, the first one after a long gap
vanishes, and the rest of them come through. [Note that this might be
slightly racy---while I was testing, I managed to hear a bell and then
-not- hear one from a rubout less than half a second later, but that's
rare.]

Note that this obviously-buggy behavior may possibly have influenced my
test results, at least---when I was doing prior testing, I didn't hammer
on the rubout key or whatever---if I heard no bell the first time, i
assumed it was dead, not that I had to try again within six seconds to
find out for sure! Sheesh.

[I believe that if you're actually in gnome/metacity, the inactive-
vanishing-bell bug doesn't manifest---I currently have my line-out
connected and I'm doing workaround #2, running xkbevd -bg, and I hit
rubout on an empty shell line that had been sitting there for ten
minutes. I heard a bloop from line-out and a beep from the motherboard
speaker. Note, however, that if it's been more than a few seconds, the
bloop is delayed at least a second compared to the motherboard; if it's
within a second or two, the start of the bloop is maybe only 300-500ms
behind the start of the motherboard beep.]

WEIRD THING #2: If you -are- getting the motherboard bell (meaning
you've done the fandango), holding down rubout in an X-less shell gives
you the bell at what seems to be the key-repeat rate, maybe 10-20Hz.
But if you're in X (e.g., via xinit, not gnome/metacity), holding down
rubout gives you a bell that's only running at about 2Hz. The duty
cycle of the X-less bell is close to 100%, but the duty cycle of the X
bell is closer to 30-50%. (They seem to have about the same -duration-
when you're just getting one of them at a time, so I guess the X-less
bell is interrupting itself when you hold rubout down, possibly so as
not to pile up a huge backlog---see below.)

By way of comparison, my 5.04 Hoary machine (yes, that old) gets this
right, -even in gnome-: holding down rubout gives me a 10-20Hz stream
of motherboard be

[Bug 494936] [NEW] SMTP not working while logged into CISCO VPN

2009-12-10 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu Karmic amd64
Evolution 2.28.1

When I am connected to the cisco VPN evolution cannot send E-Mails over smtp.
On the Terminal however I can connect to the smtp server on port 25 via telnet.

Receiving E-Mails through pop3 or imap works fine.
Just sending E-Mails is not possible. It just hangs with "sending e-mails 0%
completed".

The only way to get Mails out is to cancel the current operation,
then disconnect the VPN,
then send the Mails and
then reconnect the VPN.

This is really annoying :-(

any clues ?

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2009-12-10 Thread latimerio
How can a bug like this with so many responses be undecided or low in priority?
Usability is a key factor in modern systems and can not be rated high enough.
With usability I mean pure pragmatic ergonomics, not animations or themes which
are merely design which can be argued about.
Usability tests comprise of things like
 * number of clicks to perform a task,
 * mouse movements required
 * hit and miss clicks
 * eye movements required to find the next step in a workflow
  etc.
Usabiltiy is fairly easy to count and meter and to build a testbed for.
When I look a the plethora of themes, color and background settings it seems to
me though that ergonomics do not have enough charme for most developers.

[Bug 494793] Re: file-roller erroneously demands password

2009-12-10 Thread Dave Walker
I apologize for not understanding the problem you were having. You are
correct and I apologize.

Here are the steps necessary to recreate the problem:

1 - Launch file-roller within Ubuntu 9.10
2 - Click OPEN
3 - Select the attached archive.
4 - file-roller should display a list of files contained inside the archive.
file1 is password protected. file2 is not password protected.
5 - attempt to drag/drop file2 to the Desktop. You will be prompted for a
password which should not happen.
6 - click OK and the password prompt will not go away. Enter any random
string into the dialog box and click OK will cause the file to be successfully
decompressed.

Thank you for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

I'm affected, too. For me the Bluetooth applet icon gets doubled. I have
to remove and re-add the notification panel on every reboot, it's very
annoying.

[Bug 495009] [NEW] Gedit automatically scroll to wrong position upon mouse click

2009-12-10 Thread Tim Chen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Here is how to produce it

1. open a text file longer than one page, say, 3 page.

2. type something on page 1

3. scroll away from page 1, say, to page 3

4. click on page 3, then gedit will automatically scroll back to
somewhere between page 1 and page 3

I installed ubuntu on three different PC, and two of them got same
problems, which is really weird since I installed almost identical
packages/software on them.

Anyone got similar problem?

the Try Ubuntu mode now on the desktop, without modifying or changing

[Bug 378971] Re: Logical error

2009-12-10 Thread Arnaudus
I've reconsidered the picture a couple of times, and I cannot see any
error. The last line around the exploded mine is 1 M M 2 1 1, and just
above it is 1 3 4 4 M 2.

I just mark this bug as "invalid", because I can't see any error; the
player probably made a mistake. Please reopen the bug if I'm wrong.

[Bug 349453] Re: users-admin pretends logged in users can be removed, while they aren't

2009-12-10 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
This is now fixed upstream. Since deluser does not remove active users,
we simply refuse to delete them, showing a dialog: "John Doe is
currently using this computer. Please ensure the user has logged out
before deleting this account."

Feel free to suggest a better formulation if you find one... ;-)

[Bug 107974] Re: Evolution will not remember exchange password

2009-12-10 Thread Textureglitch
I had this problem too on Ubuntu Karmic trying to sync with google
calendar.

The error in the terminal was:
e-data-server-ui-Message: Unable to find password(s) in keyring (Keyring
reports: No matching results)
e-data-server-ui-Message: Key file does not have group 'Passwords-Calendar'
(evolution:14134): e-data-server-ui-WARNING **: Unable to find password(s) in
keyring (Keyring reports: No matching results)

My workaround was to delete the .evolution folder in the home directory
(it will be recreated automatically), delete the relevant login keys in
seahorse, and run 'evolution --force-shutdown' in the terminal.

[Bug 494798] Re: totem crashes every time DVD is loaded

2009-12-10 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 423558] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in calloc()

2009-12-10 Thread Dinogebiss
I have an assumption why I have this error, some weeks ago I installed
Pro/Engineer on my computer.
It is a cad-system from PTC.

Normally you need this packages:
csh
libmotif3
libstdc++5
build-essential
libgtk1.2
nfs-common

libstdc++5 and libgtk1.2 are newer in Karmic, so I installed the packages by
hand.
Please check this here:
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/ProEngineer

http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libstdc++5
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libglib1.2ldbl
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libgtk1.2-common
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libgtk1.2

May be if I remove these packages my nautilus will run, but what will be
happend with Pro/Engineer? I need this cad-system for work.
