[Bug 181244] Re: libcdio GPL/license violation

2010-01-13 Thread Reinhard Tartler
I'm attaching the current debian/copyright file that is currently
included in lucid's libcdio10 package.

While it does not show the license change (which needs to be handled
upstream), it does state:

 - Joerg Schilling as one of the copyright holders
 - the license is GPLv3 or later.

indeed the copyright file of lucid's package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
claims that the package was distributed under LGPL, which is problematic
AFAIUI.

[Bug 181244] [NEW] libcdio GPL/license violation

2010-01-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

There are two serious problems with libcdio:

1) The license text has been changed from "GPL v2 only" to "GPLv2 or any
later" without permission from the real Authors ofthe code the
library is based on.

2) libcdio is GPL but is is called from libgstreamer (being LGPL)
GPL and LGPL are not compatible. GPL code may not be called from non-GPL
code.
The LGPL allows to "solve" the conflict between GPL and LGPL by giving the
permission
to relicense the LGPL code under GPL. While this may work for a small
project, it is not
an applicable solution for an OS distribution as libgstreamer would then be
100% GPL only
  on Ubuntu.

BTW: This license problem has been discovered by Sun lawyers.
Sun did already remove libcdio from Solaris Expresss.

IIUC, you intend to change the XResetScreensaver() implementation in in
the xserver to reset the IDLECOUNTER. If the XScreenSaverSuspend()
implementation would call XResetScreensaver() (which seems reasonable to
me), then mplayer would be unbroken instantly!

XScreenSaverSuspend() is a pretty widly used standard API from the XSS
extensions.

[Bug 506517] Re: Doesnot display correct icon for apple ipod nano 2nd generation.

2010-01-13 Thread Vish
This is a bug in gvfs , as it should have a fallback icon even if the themes
dont have an icon for the specific device.
Note that , if humanity does not have an icon for nano then gvfs should display
the icon from gnome or should have had an icon on its own as a fallback.

This is probably a small error in the icon name mentioned in gvfs
itself. Since there is no such icon name in either humanity , gnome
icon theme or even in gvfs , the image-missing icon is displayed.

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You
can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream.
Once submitted upstream , do report back with the upstream bug number here.
Thanks in advance!

[Bug 507321] [NEW] indicator applet not updated on remote disconnect

2010-01-13 Thread teoryn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Steps:
Log into AIM with Empathy on computer A, then computer B.
Both receive "send 1 to disconnect other clients". This highlights the
indicator applets since they have both received a new message.
>From computer B, open message from indicator applet and respond with 1 to
>disconnect computer A.

Expected Result:
A is disconnected with no indication that any message was ever received, or A
is disconnected with some form of a log in the indicator applet drop down of
the message received.

What actually happens:
The indicator applet is highlighted on A, and it cannot be un-highlighted until
either exiting empathy completely or receiving another message and opening it.

I have this too. And another problem might be related: with this line in
xmonad's config:

 , className =? "Empathy" --> doF(W.shift "9:im")

the contact list does not react as expected(automatically be shifted to
workspace 9).

[Bug 507304] [NEW] HP DVD1140 not mounting correctly

2010-01-13 Thread Vihang Desai
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I think this maybe a driver issue. I am unable to mount HP DVD 1140
with any kind of CD or DVD. The following commend on the terminal "sudo
lshw -C disk" only showed my hardware drive. it give no information on
the DVD. I have even tried this with older disk of Ubuntu 8.04 in the
drive. Is there a driver available for this DVD/CD player? Brasero and
other CD/DVD softwares are unable to find this drive.

Please advise...

[Bug 432835] Re: [Karmic] Brightness Buttson OSD Test Acer Aspire 5810-4657

2010-01-13 Thread Sami Liedes
I've got stock kernel 2.6.32.3 and Debian (not Ubuntu), so all this
FWIW.

On my 5810TZ, xrandr --prop does not show BACKLIGHT_CONTROL. Backlight
keys do not work, but when booting *without* nomodeset (some posts on
the Internets suggest that "nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor" fixes this,
but for me it doesn't), it does show "Backlight" and "BACKLIGHT" (if
booting *with* acpi_backlight=vendor, even these settings disappear):

$ xrandr --prop

Doing "xrandr --output LVDS1 --set Backlight 5" (or whatever number from
0..9) doesn't seem to change anything, but I noticed by accident that
after setting the value using that command, pressing the backlight
setting keys on the keyboard (Fn+arrow keys) sets then the backlight to
the brightness set with xrandr.

The same actually can be done via /proc:

r...@lap:/proc/acpi/video/OVGA# ls -l

current: 10

r...@lap:/proc/acpi/video/OVGA# echo 50 >DD02/brightness

[and now pressing Fn+brightness key immediately sets the display brightness to
50.]

/proc/acpi/video/DD02/brightness always reflects the brightness as set
by xrandr, but it only seems to take effect when pressing the brightness
adjustment keys on the keyboard (which have no effect other than that,
although they do send XF86MonBrightnessUp/Down keycodes as shown by
xev).

[Bug 507264] [NEW] Choppy/Freezing H.264 Encoded Video Playback

2010-01-13 Thread A.J.
Public bug reported:

I have encountered this problem over the past two months. Any mvk
wrapped video that uses the FFmpeg H.264 codec is choppy in Totem movie
player and in VLC media player. Mplayer will play the files but
(displays a system too slow message) after some time will cause the
whole computer to freez including the mouse pointer. If you let it sit
for about a minute the computer will reboot itself to recover from the
crash. VLC seems to handle the videos the best but also freezes the
computer like Mplayer. Mplayer and totem max out one of my CPU cores.
VLC does not but can be pixelated, out of sync, or freezes up the
computer. You can use any 780i or higher resolution HD video encoded
with H.264 as a sample file. As long as I don't play mvk files I have no
freezing problems with this machine under Ubuntu for weeks at a time.

[Bug 507263] [NEW] Light 1px border around desktop

2010-01-13 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When creating or renaming objects on the desktop, a light, 1px wide
border appears around the desktop (panels and maximized windows do
overlap). The border only disappears when killing the process
'nautilus'.

[Bug 478714] Re: My system crashed and had to restart the computer after trying to send a file by Emp. I reinstalled the program, but it does not connect anymore.

2010-01-13 Thread Rodrigo Matos
I think it is.
All you need to do is try to send an archive to anyone else using the frame on
the window conversation.
I don't use Empathy anymore, but when saw this bug was on this situation.

1 - Open the windows conversation;
2 - Click on the option to send a archive to the contact;
3 - Select the archive;
4 - Send.

2010-01-13 Thread Benno
Thx Scott, it looks though as if my problem was solved. After using the
startx command I cleaned out the HD, reinstalled G-P-M via synaptic and
rebooted without a problem. (It looks as if the backup is being done to
HD itself if the external disk is not mounted causing a space shortage
which in turn may have caused the system to become unstable but I still
need to verify if that indeed was the root cause.)

[Bug 507236] [NEW] error saving files to FTP server vi gvfs APPEND command instead of OVERWRITE

2010-01-13 Thread mikwit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I'm editing php source files directly on remote FTP server. Tried to use GEANY
as an editor.
While saving to FTP server a problem occured.
1st save after opening file is always OK,
2nd save and next causes a problem. Saved content is appended to existing file
instead of overwriting.
I have checked with server log - APPE command is executed.
It was checked on 2 client machines - using Ubuntu Jaunty and Karmic - same
problem occured, and on several ftp servers.

I have posted this problem to GEANY bug report, but guys replied that it
uses gvfs, so I'm posting this bug here.

[Bug 507231] [NEW] Automatic umount ineffective on standard installation

2010-01-13 Thread Nikolaus Rath
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

In a standard ubuntu installation, the evolution-data-server application
is started when the user first logs in and keeps running even after the
user has logged out. This prevents ecryptfs from automatically umounting
the encrypted home directory and keeps the unencrypted data available
until the computer is restarted.

Steps to reproduce:
 - Log in to GDM as a user with ecryptfs encrypted home directory
 - Log out
 - Switch to console, log in as root
 - Observe that the home directory of the user is still mounted

[Bug 158259] Re: wide windows have messed up window decoration

2010-01-13 Thread Teej
I have tried reproducing this in Lucid without any problems, following
your instructions and using the video. Are you able to? This may be a
driver-specific issue. If this is a problem in Lucid, please execute the
following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:

apport-collect -p xorg 158259

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report.

[Bug 507189] Re: Mahjongg: 3 pairs of same tile, w/screenshot

2010-01-13 Thread Don J.
Out of curiosity, I replayed the same seed while checking off the tiles
on the postmodern.svg in gimp to determine which non-blue non-gold tile
was skipped, and it was the green character after the red Zhong (中),
which only appeared in one pair.

The blue winter tiles appeared as only one of each 1 2 3 4.
The gold summer tiles appeared as: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4.

I realize this is likely trivial, and that it may not be a bug at all
and just a rare random result of the drawing algorithm, but I felt it
might be of interest to some.

[Bug 489824] Re: power manager icon on system tray doesn't indicate battery status correctly

2010-01-13 Thread Jordi
Hello all,

This is the same that happens to me. In particular:

When I switch on my computer using only the battery, the Battery monitor
on the tray is showing ALWAYS that the battery is fully charged.
However, making a simple click onto the monitor icon, it shows a popup
with the actual percentage of remaining battery. In this situation, if I
do not verify frequently the remaining power, the computer
just runs out of battery and halts abruptly. When restarting, I had
to fscheck the filesystems. This is very dangerous.

However, I found a "trick" while this issue is not successfully addressed.
All this changes when I simply connect the PC
to the power (just less than a second) and the monitor changes:

* A popup shows that the the battery is discharging, as well as the remaining
battery percentage and the time.
* The tray icon is showing that the battery is discharging.
* The popup information when click the icon remains the same than before.

In this situation, the battery monitor shows 2 alerts: the first one
some time before running out of battery (about 9% of battery) and the
second one when only 1-2% of battery remains. In both cases, the popup
alert shows correctly the percentage of battery, but do not show the
proper remaining time (just "unknown remaining time" or so). In
contrast, in this case, the computer switch off normally (as I have set
up in the settings).

All these problems appeared when upgrading to Karmic. In the previous
ubuntu release, all worked really fine.

My hardware settings are as follows (sudo lshw):

[Bug 507190] [NEW] GNOMEtris scrambles the pieces

2010-01-13 Thread MiguelCm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Package gnome-games 1:2.28.0-0ubuntu1, using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

I do not really know what caused the problem; when one of the pieces fell to
the bottom in GNOMEtris, the pieces got scrambled
as you can see in the attached screenshot. New pieces just stayed in the air.

[Bug 507189] [NEW] Mahjongg: 3 pairs of same tile, w/screenshot

2010-01-13 Thread Don J.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Not sure if this was a memory error on my end, or a code issue (haven't
read the code), but I just received a 'seed' with six of the same tile.
I played the game out after taking the attached screenshot and noticed
no other strange behavior other than the temporary formation of several
small black holes, which quickly disappeared. Hopefully the diagnostic
information will help.

[Bug 491840] Re: PDF black-on-white text can't be seen when another PDF is opened using White-on-Black text

2010-01-13 Thread Carroarmato0
It's strange.

When I have the PDF with the BLACK background opened, all the other
"normal" pdf's from my MySQL course get completely black.

However, if I try opening some other pdfs like the one Sebastian
posted right here, the problem doesn't occur.

This leads me to think that there might be something strange within the
pdfs of my course.

I don't know if it might be relevant, but the PDF with the black
background, as well as the other pdfs of my course where made on a Mac.

Also note that the one with the Black Background come from a guest
teacher, while all the others were made by my regular teacher.

Long story short, the one with the Black background seems to be the
cause of this problem.

[Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)

2010-01-13 Thread ankspo71
I managed to fix it. I downloaded a new alacarte source package and
compiled the source code myself. I can now edit any menu entry in
alacarte.

If anyone needs to fix alacarte in Ubuntu Lucid (alpha 1) (gnome-
desktop), because you are unable to edit the entries in the gnome menu,
see below.

I got alacarte from gnome 2.29.4 - alacarte version 0.12.4 found here:
http://www.icewalkers.com/download/GNOME/1075/dld/

I think the dependencies were intltool and libgnome-menu-dev
(when you run ./configure it will tell you)

./configure
make
sudo make install

you might need to reboot the system, if not log out and back in again.

Also, I was advised that *.desktop files are not present in the
~/.local/share/applications folder by default, so I am mistaken about
that part in my earlier post.

Probable Bug Solution:
I think alacarte needs to be recompiled for i386 desktop (Lucid alpha 1) before
alpha 2 is released.
Thanks,

We've submitted all the papercuts upstream. He has also assigned the
corresponding papercut bugs to the next release milestone. So expect more such

Vish, I thought the idea for hundredpapercuts was to take small issues
and fix them for ourselves. Since upstream has taken care of this, I
assumed that fix-committed would take up a spot of another potential
papercut that could use a fix.

[Bug 507139] [NEW] Evince prints parts it should not.

2010-01-13 Thread GarethTheRed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

In the UK the Royal Mail allows consumers to purchase and print postage online.
The website returns a PDF document which should be printed onto the envelope
or onto plain paper and pasted to the envelope. The PDF documents has the
words "Sample will not appear when printed" across it.
When I use MS Windows, the PDF prints without this message (as it should).
However, if I use Linux and evince to print, the words unfortunately do show up
on the finished envelope.
