[Bug 521290] [NEW] keyboard layouts - no default layout for system

2010-02-12 Thread sKwa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In System->Preferences->Keyboard, Layouts tab, if you have more than one layout
no option to choose default layout for the system (no radio button like in
karmik or any other option), and if you are typing in other language, not
English and open new app, suppose terminal, so layout for the new app will be
last typed layout. I have tried to change trow gconf-editor
(/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup) - no results.
"Separate layout for each window" works.

[Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in

2010-02-12 Thread crf
I have this bug, running Karmic (ubuntu 9.10)

When I run on AC power, I have the screen brightness set, using power manager,
at ~80%. I'd like it to stay there.
After I let the computer idle for about 38 seconds, the brightness Increases to
100% and stays there unless I "bother" the computer (for example, touch the
mouse), at which point brightness reverts back to the correct value of 80%

I don't use the keyboard to change brightness.

[Bug 255228] Re: Disabling the suspend and hibernate locks via gconf-editor doesn't do anything (from Intrepid to Karmic included)

2010-02-12 Thread ThePasha
Just did double check of MoarningSun observation results... it's
absolutely correct: gnome-power-manager settings work just fine. Once
disabled lock not appear when using either timeout suspend or keyboard
hotkey. My workaround appears even simpler, I replaced standard applet
with old "Power Down..." applet (look like red power button). It rises
window with choice of suspend, log off and shut down options. Almost the
same but works correctly (at least on my machine).

[Bug 460340] Re: rhythmbox no sound no play on i386 ubuntu 9.04

2010-02-12 Thread gary mercado
hi sir,
thanks for taking time to read my question.. but after i posted the question i
received a copy of ubuntu 9.10 kk from canonical and then installed it to
replace 9.04.. the sound works and all other function of my laptop except the
cd-lightscriber function (cd face design-etching).. i.e. as i can see now, of
course maybe if there are bugs on software installed.. so far the problem i
have with rythmbox is "text|html decoder" which is needed to play some internet
radio station.. i can't find it in synaptic pkg mgr..For cd play rythmbox is
good but no options/menu to adjust sound quality like "equalizer" or bass
booster or whatever.. it is just plain sound..anyway it is good player and no
skipping even on old /scratch disc being played..
i installed audacious for radio streaming.. i am not sure if this is the right
place to send my question but here it is. I noticed just lately one
problem .. audacious will just stops playing and always need to restart again
and again.. when i play cd on audacious it will load automatically and the
speed of play is so fast ..keynotes is high,,, so it sounds like alvin voice..
"alvin the chipmunks"...also when i use audacious-default theme as my theme and
it looks good.. it is a bad combination with pidgin..
when i start to chat or when the other person send chat messages to me.. all i
can see is black.. audacious theme is black.. dialog/chat box is black too so i
can not see what other person saying/typing or rather the message.. no options
to clororizes incoming messages.. i do not know other plugins for audacious.. i
installed them all already..
anything i missed ?
thanks..

[Bug 520315] Re: Apple Lossless files will not play in rythmbox

2010-02-12 Thread bbordwell
Rhythmbox developer says it works for him, perhaps it is a bug specific
to the gstreamer packages in the repositories and not the fault of
rhythmbox?

If i remember correctly VLC does not use gstreamer it has its own
codecs, so this could be a possibility.

[Bug 513691] Re: Editable menu shortcut keys (Appearance > Interface) do not work as expected

2010-02-12 Thread Krzysztof Klimonda
ok, I've actually played some more with this bug as I was wondering where it
comes from (and how hard would it be to fix it in Karmic) and it looks like
I've made a mistake - I've originally bound it to Ctrl+L and it worked just
fine, I've also bound it to Ctrl+S but probably haven't tested it properly and
didn't notice that it doesn't work as expected. Now I see that Ctrl+S and some
other combinations (like Ctrl+O) are treated differently and it isn't limited
to totem - I could confirm that this is an issue in gedit (you can try by
binding Insert date and time to Ctrl+A and using it - instead of displaying a
dialog it selects all text). Sorry for making the noise. I'm going to mark bug
as confirmed once again.
Now about if it gets fixed in Karmic - I'm not sure as it depends on the
complexity of the bug and amount of work it would take to backport the fix.
Can't tell right now.

Public bug reported:

I loaded ubuntu 9.10 to this comp, and also to a friends, my friends
will not use the netgear wpn111, usb device, i was trying to load
helpful folders on a cd so that i could take it to his house and read
them while trying to fix his net problem, but while trying to do so,,,
discovered that although brasero seems to burn the html pages to disk,
and the gedit file i'd created, it will not open the disk afterwards.
I went to windows xp, and used nero to burn the info to another disk, xp
will read it properly afterwards, but when i take said disk back to
ubuntu, same problem, nothing will mount or open it.

[Bug 521130] Re: Quadrapassel encoding error in Help document

2010-02-12 Thread Nigel Babu
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

There is only auth_self and auth_admin, correct.

However, the system adminstrator can do overrides that are more
finegrained, down to the user/group level. I believe it would be
possible for them to create a policy (on top of an Ubuntu default system
that just said "yes" rather than "auth_*") where the default was "no",
but anyone in the netdev group could do it without a password.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 509079] Re: nautilus has tabs on bottom

2010-02-12 Thread Tom Pino
The dual view is very nice but not at all worth it if you have to go to
the bottom of the page for the tabs.

Some folks may like this. This is fine.

It slows me down way to much. I have several testing installations and
do a lot of work on them through nautilus and I need the tabs where they
should be for speed of work. That is at the top.

This really should be configurable.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

@Mike
Thank you for letting us know that you are experiencing this problem as well.
Could you please click on the "Does this bug affect you?" link at the top of
this report and select "Yes"? It is far easier for developers to see how many
people are affected by a certain bug this way as opposed to them having to read
through all of the comments.

Also, would you mind testing this bug in Lucid Lynx? You can use a
Virtual Machine or a Live CD to do so, but this will help us determine
if this bug has indeed been fixed in Ubuntu 10.04. You can find out more
about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks
again and we appreciate your help.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-12 Thread mikef187
I second this problem. I have 2 different machines that boot and 3 times
out of 4 will fail to load any icon on the top or bottom panel. I
happened to have a terminal launcher on the desktop, so I haven't tried
the alt F2 trick. Running a killall gnome-panel brings everything up.

I also have a friend who claims that when he boots his menu is missing,
then he unplugs his network cord and reboots and it bots correctly. I'm
not sure how reliable this report is, but it maybe a place to start.

I check syslogs dmesg etc and I see nothing interesting.
What information would you like from my laptop, or desktop that may help?
lspci, lsusb, syslogs? request it and I'll send it.

Mike

9.10 problem started around first week of February.

[Bug 485352] Re: The Window List Applet in GNOME should offer a setting to permanently set an X number of rows

2010-02-12 Thread Draycen DeCator
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

- My "window list applet" style is usually on 2 rows when I have more than
- 1 window opened. However, in some circumstances, the "window list
- applet" fails to use its settings and its style changes to be only on 1
- row. See the attached screenshot "window-list-applet-bug.png", that
- explains visually the bug.
+ The "Window List Applet" automatically adjusts the number of rows based
+ on the height of the panel. However, due to the varying heights of the
+ titles for some windows (due to the height of the characters of
+ different languages, for example), this causes the applet to sometimes
+ switch between one and two rows without the height of the panel
+ changing. Instead, it would be nice if there were an official setting so
+ a specific number of rows could be set for the applet, so that it can
+ always be two rows, even if the title doesn't completely fit.

- I can always reproduce this bug with these steps:
-
- 1) gnome-panel preferences are displayed in the attached screen shot
- "gnome-panel-preferences.png".
-
- 2) "window list applet" preferences are displayed in the attached screen
- shot "window-list-applet-preferences.png".
-
- 3) Open more than 1 window, for example Nautilus and gnome-terminal.
-
- 4) Open the attached file "reconst_accident_fr.pdf" with Evince, or
- visit the website http://sisinmaru.blog17.fc2.com/ on a browser (I can
- reproduce the bug with Firefox, Epiphany and Liferea).
-
- Expected results: The applet won't change
-
- Actual result: The "window list applet" style changes. There's no longer
- 2 rows.
-
-
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10
+ DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.1

[Bug 513691] Re: Editable menu shortcut keys (Appearance > Interface) do not work as expected

2010-02-12 Thread steubens
Can't you confirm with where it was reported? my internet access has a
cap and I cant keep up with development versions. I'm very excited that
it might work correctly in lucid, and will use it when its released; but
right now I'm more concerned with whether it is confirmed as is in
karmic

"works for me" type answers are starting to tire me out; I'm not doing
bug triage, I don't have all these versions of software running
everywhere, people doing triage should however. that's not to say I'm
not willing to do triage ... but people generally aren't and these kind
of replies are a curt brush off.

Also I'm sure you followed the steps exactly; but you aren't disproving
a negative, which yields very little useful information in the scheme of
things, if you were to reproduce it in the same version, you could be
sure you're following the steps to encounter the behavior, then confirm
or disconfirm on lucid.

pardon the hot air

[Bug 489887] [NEW] gnome power manager error on acer aspire one netbook

2010-02-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: netbook-launcher

Hello, there is a problem with the power manager when using 9.10 on the
acer aspire one netbook. When the netbook is not plugged into a power
source and thus running from it's battery, the power icon will show the
netbook as being 'fully charged'. This does not happen every single
time, but probably on more than three quarters of occasions.

Step 1 - Turn on Acer Aspire One netbook with power cable attached and
start Ubuntu 9.10.

Step 2 - Remove power cable for a short time in order to drain some of
the battery.

Step 3 - Put power cable back into netbook

Step 4 - Hover mouse cursor over power icon. Text will say 'Laptop
Battery Charging (PERCENTAGE)'

Step 5 - Unplug charger, text will now say 'Laptop battery is fully
charged' This is wrong as the battery is not fully charged.

You're right. If I set the height of my panel to 54 px instead of 52 px,
the "window list applet" stays to 2 rows. Good news. :-)

>Do you believe there should be a setting for how many rows the Windows
List applet should use at all times?

Definitively. I think it would be less disturbing to be able to have
always X row(s).

Thanks a lot for the discussion.

Karmic is a stable release, which means only bugfix versions are uploaded to it
now, i.e. (for GNOME) version with an even minor number. So users-admin 2.29.x
is only available in Lucid - you'll have to wait until April to get the fix.

[Bug 521200] [NEW] nautilus crashes when opening tree with large number of files

2010-02-12 Thread Amahdy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This bug is a little hard to describe but I was able to re-produce, well
let's try:

I have a tree view like this:

>fodler1
>folder2

folder1 contains more than 2K files, I expanded it:

\folder1
|-file1
|-file2
.
.
.
|-fileN
>folder2

fileN is not the *last* file, it was just loading more and more files,
when I noticed that there is too many files I then decided to collapse
back "folder1", but I noticed that the other files still loading (or
maybe painting):

>folder1
>folder2
|-fileN+1
|-fileN+2
|-fileN+3
.
.
.
|-fileN+X

When I tried to select those files, nautilus crashes and exit.

I hope I was able to explain the procedure clearly ... for reference my
laptop is relatively fast and the issue of not quickly respond is not a
laptop-speed issue ... Thanks!

[Bug 521198] [NEW] Can't zoom text in chat windows.

2010-02-12 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I'd like to be able to ctrl-zoom or specify a larger font size in chat

I run my system at either 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 and none of my
systemwide font settings affect the size of chat text in empathy.

This makes for a very squinty experience, even though the rest of my

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Version 0.12.5-0ubuntu5.2

Karmic Koala 32bit

Essentially, rhythmbox requires the play command twice in order to play
a song which is not in its music library. This breaks any compatibility
with software that would use it as an audio player (gpodder, nautilus
etc.)

To reproduce.

1) Find a music file on your machine which is NOT in the rhythmbox
library.

2) Right-Click the file and select "open with rhythmbox"

3) If rhythmbox is already playing a file, notice that the file being
played will pause, but the new file will not be loaded unless this step
is repeated. If rhythmbox is not already playing a file, the file may
or may not load, but will not play. If rhythmbox was not running at
all, it will open, but not load or play the file.

My expectation: Rhythmbox should play any audio file the first time,
regardless of whether or not it has been previously added to the library.

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

This was on a live cd, so I fail to see how it can be a theme selection
issue. Indeed if it is then it's a bug in the Ubuntu default theme, not
anything I've done post-install.

[Bug 519819] Re: not possible print only a portion of a pdf

2010-02-12 Thread Andrea Foschi
My problem was different what I supposed.
It is the preview that don't work.
I have created a new 3 pages document with openoffice and i saved it in .pdf
format.
When i ask to print page 2 if I look to preview all three page are visible and
if I print these are all printed.
Instead if i print without using preview only page 2 is printed.
