[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread splashis
I totally agree with all the people that don't want such a big change in an LTS.
As Mark said: He wants to free space for something NEW, but people want to
work with an LTS for several years and don't want to be bothered by a design
based on an in between conception.
If you're sure you want to do it, ok, keep discussing with the community and
implement it in 10.10 but NOT IN A LTS-Version!

[Bug 541923] [NEW] The window manager controls do not resposnd

2010-03-19 Thread duckwhistle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I have several symptoms with ubuntu 9.10 which I believe to be the same
issue.

1. I can no longer use the Minimize, Maximize, or Close buttons, or move
a window. The window bar just doesn't respond to being clicked on.

2. Alt+Tab will not switch between windows nor will clicking them with
the mouse, and the Panel buttons wont work when I have other programs
open.

3. All the icons have disappeared from the notification area including
the network connection manager which is preventing me from connecting to
the internet.

It worked fine one day, the next i switched on my computer, inserted a dvd rom,
browsed through it, and opened a txt file. Next I opened a the console from the
panel menu. when I tried to switch back to Gedit it would not gain focus.
I tried rebooting the computer and I went from having symptoms 1 and 2 to also
having symptom 3.
If I use the Indicator applet to switch to a guest session then every thing
works fine.

I assume metacity is the problem, I can't think of anything else it might be.
metacity:

[Bug 541934] [NEW] Can't connect to Outlook Web Access

2010-03-19 Thread Jos grote Punt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I wanted to make contact with Outlook Web Access from the company I work.
In Evolution I tried to make an account.
For Server Type I chose Microsoft Exchange.
For OWA URL I chose:
https://webmail.ing.net/CookieAuth.dll?GetLogon?curl=Z2Fowareason=0formdir=1
I clicked on Login Check and entered my password.
Then I saw this message:
Could not configure Exchange account because
an unknown error occurred. Check the URL,
username, and password, and try again.

In Firefox I use exactly the same URL and there it works.

[Bug 538770] Re: [ambiance, radiance] The calendar part on the panel is orange/rose after opening and closing when right clicking on indicator applet

2010-03-19 Thread Christian Göbel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 424315 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/424315

@Vish:
This is probably not a duplicate of bug #424315 for the following reasons:
a) I can not reproduce bug #424315 - pointing or clicking on empty space on the
panel does not have any effect!
b) The screenshot does not fit to the issue reported here. Issue reported
concerns only clicking on the indicator applet after having clicked twice on
the calender applet.

In addition: Since with most themes the issue is practically invisible
and it clearly visible with the new theme I think that in the short run
(Ubuntu Lucid) this issue can be addressed in the theme.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread Yann

Our design roadmap calls for us to reduce the visibility of scrollbars,
and emphasise:

 - touch scrolling
 - scrollwheels

Most people don't scroll with the scrollbar any more. The use the
scrollbar to gauge how much fo the document am I seeing.

Hum... I think the very long list of concerns in current bug is a very
good test to see how much this is wrong (as navigating in any long
single paged document, like source code...).

Experiment using a touchpad or a scroll whell on this report and hear
your fingers complain! Scrollwhell is useful for line to line precise
navigation. Elevators are more appropriate to move quickly on large
areas.

So both are usefull and current global ergonomy, after about 25 years of
fine darwinian tunning process, again really make sense.

This would be another error, for mainstream computer use IMO.

Maybe for a MID or a tablet interface, something else could make sense:
But I don't see touchscreens going in generalist computer area, there is
too much people upset by fingermarks on a computer screen for this
concept having any future oustide very specific use cases.

This may be an xlib bug, this may be a freenx bug, this may be a gtk or
pygtk bug... This is when running an X session with freenx-server and
connecting remotely. If I ssh to the machine, export my display to :0
(even though the machine is in a headless vm) and run the same test, it
returns a proper value. I'm filing the bug under pygtk since that's the
highest level package I can think of. This is causing gajim (as of the
latest development versions) to crash on startup, with the traceback
pointing to the keymap.get_entries_for_keyval command.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread scholli
I hear alway touchscreens as argument. But it's a funny argument in my
eyes. The pick-up'ed Icons on the panel, switch off - button on the
panel, control-buttons (right or left), hide windows-applet, ... all is
too small for that feature. Honestly it needs a different Desktop-
Interface like the Ubuntu-Remix for Netbooks is, but THAT as an argument
is ridiculous.

# 253: I think it's a bad idea separate the control-buttons. Firstly
it's looks hideous and second ... mhh I don't know. Don't like it.
Before that, better put it all together to the right side. The best is
left. Menu, toolbar-buttons etc. all in a ratio near together. I am
faster now and have shorter mouseways since the new change. ,)

I'm part of Ubuntu Reviewers team. Your patch is good to brute-force
revert the change but what about people who want both options and switch
between the two behavior? As discussed in this long bug report it's not
possible yet due to many issues raised and the patch doesn't bring
configurable behavior.

I've subscribed foundations team, hopefully they can work on this.

Thank you for making Ubuntu better. This bug sucks indeed.

[Bug 540658] Re: added new channel deleted network ubuntu 9.10

2010-03-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 424315] Re: remove mouse over effect of clock applet

@ Christian Göbel : The problem for both the bugs are the same , the
_focus_ is the problem here.

The color you notice from the new theme is :
focus_color = #f15d2c
editing the theme and changing it completely is not the solution , the clock
applet should not be using this focus colors

This focus color is used when buttons/tabs are active and the hence the
buttons/tabs are focussed
So that the user can simply hit enter and the preselected option is selected.
This happens with all themes.

While hitting enter does not open the clock applet it should not still
retain the focus

[Bug 406036] Re: inkscape crashes using certain input methods: _gdk_input_grab_pointer: assertion failed: (input_window != NULL)

2010-03-19 Thread Alex Valavanis
@WolphFang,

Ubuntu 9.10 still uses the version of gtk+ that causes the crash but it
is fixed in Ubuntu 10.04. You can either:

* upgrade your system to the beta version of Ubuntu 10.04 [press ALT+F2
and type update-manager -d in the dialog that pops up]

* wait until the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 next month, and upgrade
your system then.

* manually get hold of the latest Ubuntu package for gtk+2.0 from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/gtk+2.0/2.19.7-0ubuntu1 and
install it. I don't recommend this, as it could break a lot of other
things for you!!

Thanks,

Alex

[Bug 542001] [NEW] gnome-network-properties: put the cursor at the end of the proxy entry while typing

2010-03-19 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When entering the proxy address in the proxy tab, the hostname is
automatically extracted and replace the current entry. But the cursor is
then placed at the beginning of the entry, before the last character
resulting in typo. It should be put after the last character.

exemple:
Go to HTTP Proxy and enter (without interruption):
http://localhost
the result is
ocalhostl

[Bug 448805] Re: Totem Visualizations Freeze When Seeking

Hi! Just to agree with the above, I am in the same position as Øyvind
Stegard - not permanant freeze, just until a new song is loaded (whether
selected by me or loaded automatically from a playlist). Selecting the
same song from the playlist or dragging back to the start of the song
doesn't unfreeze but it is just the visuals.

[Bug 172526] Re: Two-sided printing problem in libgnomeprint

2010-03-19 Thread levicivita
I think you guys are being a little too nonchalant about this. This is
a real problem. 1) This problem is widely mentioned in various Ubuntu
forums, e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=511045 or
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-511045.html or http
://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8911603 or dozens of
others. 2) I also confirmed it on my Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. Specifically,
after enabling duplex printing in CUPS, I can print double sided from
Open Office 3.0.1. and Acrobat Reader 9.3.1 (as installed from the
Canonical repositories), but not from Evince 2.26.1. I think we need to
look at this more carefully - as it stands, anyone who wants to print
PDFs two sided has to install Adobe's software - not sure that this is
the message that you want to convey to the community...

[Bug 542019] [NEW] Confusing disk space when burning CD image

2010-03-19 Thread Daniel G. Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

The dialog that shows up when burning an ISO image to a disk displays
the space left on the blank disk I just inserted, but it is written in a
way that makes it seem as though the disk has almost no space left
currently and made me swap it out several times before I realized it was
the disk left AFTER the ISO is burned. See example:

http://i.imgur.com/5d3UB.png

This should be changed to say 27.8 MB free space after burn or
something to prevent confusion.

[Bug 539829] Re: e_shell_window_peek_shell: assertion `E_IS_SHELL_WINDOW (window)' failed

2010-03-19 Thread Andreas Sandberg
No, there is no crash associated with it, I was trying to debug a freeze
in evolution on when I encountered it, but that is probably related to
something in the evolution-data-server. But, since the assertion
triggered, there is obviously something wrong in the source (could be
something in the GTK stack though), even though it doesn't result in a
crash. I'll test with Lucid, but I'm afraid that'll have to wait a
couple of weeks.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread John Lewis
My 2 cents worth:-

1. From a purely productive point of view, having the minimize, maximize
and close buttons near the menus saves having to move the mouse pointer
to the opposite side of the screen under certain circumstances.
Personally I would rather waste untold seconds of my life enjoying a
good book or a nice wine than moving my mouse pointer unnecessarily.

2. I totally agree with the view that this isn't and shouldn't be a
democracy. Coming from a Gentoo background, when Daniel Robbins left
(along with autocracy), and the council came into existence (the
beginning of democracy/meritocracy), seemed to be the start of some
problems with Gentoo.

Basically when everything has to be decided by committee/consensus view
it a) slows the decision making process down a lot and b) some pretty
silly decisions get made in the interests of trying to keep everyone
happy.

Personally I would rather have things move forward and improve quickly
at the expense of a minority of decisions I don't agree with. The crux
may come when a lot of decisions aren't agreed with by a lot of people
and then the distribution becomes crap. We aren't there yet and as long
as Mark Shuttleworth and others in the upper echelons remain
conscientious it probably won't happen.

[Bug 542035] [NEW] Multiple suspend-resume cycles fail to resume

2010-03-19 Thread tekstr1der
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Clean install of 2010.03.18 Daily Lucid CD results in:

Suspend-resume works as expected exactly one time only. The system will
then suspend again successfully, but when a resume is prompted, it will
reboot, resulting in loss of apps/data.

This behavior occurs if suspended more than once during the same session
and also persists between logins. The only fix is a full reboot.
Rebooting allows for another single successful suspend-resume cycle.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

I think most people are right handed and now their way (with the mouse) is

Please let the icons on the right side of the bar. Users who come from another

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread MattW
ok. guys.. I didn't read all the posts because the bickering started to
make my head hurt. I am as passionate about Ubuntu as most of the people
that posted here. I'd show you the tattoo but it's in a private place.
:) Seriously, the passion of this argument is good but not directed in
the right place.

Stop and think for a second.. Dismiss all the personal attacks and clear
your mind. What is one of the primary reasons that people have embraced
Ubuntu so passionately? Most of your personal answers can be boiled down
to one point: openness. The ability to make it your own. While I
understand the reasoning to dress up the new OS to a more appealing
look, it changes the usability of the interface. I don't agree with it,
but I understand it.

It has been assumed many times that the purpose of improving Ubuntu is
to increase market share. Considering where the majority of the market
share lies, Ubuntu defaults should focus on making those users (who are
primarily very, VERY non-technical) comfortable with switching over.
It's a sad fact, but if you make non-technical users have to think about
basic usage actions, they will be less likely to switch. Most of them
don't even know what a DOS prompt is in their old OS, much less a
terminal in this new OS. Look at it from the perspective of the target
audience, not the perspective of us that have been using it for years.

If one of the goals of the new release is to pull users from the OSX
religion, you are on the right track. However, I can tell you that you
won't be nearly as successful as you would be targeting another market.
You're are not investing your resources well at all.

Rhetorical question: How hard would it be to add a toggle button under
Customize Theme in the Appearance dialog? If it restricts the ability to
build custom themes or opens a can worms, fine.. toss a shell script
somewhere safe for those of us that could actually find it, instead of
requiring non-technical users to find threads like this to feel
comfortable.

BTW it doesn't respect HIG 2.2 according to
http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/windows-utility.html.en#windows-instant-apply
Do not make the user press an OK or Apply button to make the changes happen,
unless either:
[...]
* the changes in the window have to be applied simultaneously to prevent
the system entering a potentially unstable state. For example, the hostname and
proxy fields in a network properties window.

[Bug 542068] [NEW] Missing translations for xterm failsafe session

2010-03-19 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

The xterm failsafe session located in
/usr/share/xsessions/xterm.desktop has the X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm
entry in order to use the translations from /usr/share/locale-
langpack/xx/LC_MESSAGES/gdm.mo. However, the Name=xterm and
Comment=Failsafe session with only xterm can't be translated because
there aren't in the Launchpad template.

The following query returns nothing:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/gnome-
session/+pots/gnome-
session-2.0/es/+translate?batch=10show=allsearch=xterm

We need to include i18n facility for, at least, the Comment= key, so we
can translate the Failsafe session with only xterm string.

I attach an screenshot of the GDM Setup application, which you can see
all the session names translated except the failsafe xterm one.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-19 Thread BavarianPH
Window-Buttons-Editor or *mwbuttons* (Metacity Window Buttons}, as the
original script

was called, (c) 2010 Pablo Seminario pab...@gmail.com.

Is a simple GUI script to place the buttons on the Titlebar in any order,
and right or left.

Create a link, put it in the menu, desktop, menubar, etc.-

The only thing missing is an option to center, or right and left the *Title
text* in the Title bar.

I am sure that a script could be created and added to enable Title centering
into the

Window-Buttons-Editor or Metacity Window Buttons script, perhaps also
adding a

Window-manager icon (/usr/share/pimaps/other/Windowmanager.png) to the
link,

or what ever icon you wish to choose.

The *attached* file is the script for Window-Buttons-Editor.

BavarianPH,
Ubuntu forever!
