[Bug 533566] Re: [Lucid] Window controls are on the left side after update

2010-03-22 Thread BobPendleton
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 532633 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633

There is a bug somewhere. I used the gconf-editor tweak to fix the bug on two
machines that were running alpha 3. I just installed beta1 on my laptop and
learned, the hard way, the the gconf-tweak has been disabled. Changing the
metacity setting no longer moves the buttons to the right.

If this is not a bug because it is a design decision then it is time to
debug the designer by replacing him/her/them. They are, to but blunt,
incompetent and arrogant beyond the meaning of the word arrogant. I have
seen this kind of disregard for the pain of other humans only in the
history of mass scam artists and spammers. I am serious, this is, for
me, a deal killer. If this is left in, I and many people like me will
simply switch to another, any other distribution.

I have read comments from Shuttleworth on this is intended to "free up"
the right hand side of the window title bar to make room for space for
"future" "enhancements". So this disregard for all of comes directly
from the top. Not sure what to do about that. His comments also tell us
the he not only has no interest in fixing the problem. He plans to make
it worse, much worse, by putting something in the right hand corner. If
what he puts there is any kind of a control it will be hit and triggered
constantly by everyone who use Ubuntu.

Why do I say pain? In my case I must use Windows machines everyday.
OTOH, I have been using an X based desktop since X11R3. I have been
using a desktop with the window buttons on the right since the late
'1980s? So long ago it is hard to remember :-) Every time I try to use
Lucid on my laptop my eyes go wonky trying to find the window buttons.
It takes me several seconds to find the new buttons. It wastes my time,
and it causes me physical pain from the eyestrain of having to search
carefully for the buttons. Yeah, if I've been using X since the 1980s I
must be old by now.

Here is the punchline, the kicker, the deal breaker

I installed Lucid Alpha 3 on a test machine and freaked when the windows
came up without any buttons. On closer inspection I found them on the
wrong side. I quickly found out how to correct the problem using gconf-
editor. I thought, ok that was easy I can live with that. I put Lucid
Alpha 3 on my desktop and I've been using it happily with that little
tweak with gconf-editor and a few clicks of the mouse to get rid of that
unreadable new theme. Ok, so I waited until beta 1 came out and waited a
few days for it to stabilize and I installed it on my laptop. (I really
love Ubuntu on a laptop.) I also updated my test machine and desktop to
beta 1.

After rebooting I went in to gconf-editor and changed the buttons back
to the right. The first two times I did that on my other two machines
the buttons moved instantly. But, on a fully updated install of beta 1
the buttons did not move. The buttons are still on the right on the
machines I installed with alpha 3. But, on the machine I installed with
beta 1 the buttons did not move. I have checked and the changes to show
up in gconf-editor. But, the buttons are still on the left. They have
not moved. I have check the settings three times now and even rebooted
between checking and the buttons are still on the left.

It would seem that there is either a bug, or the Ubuntu folks have now
made it impossible to correct this error without doing surgery on either
the theme or the source code. I do not know which.

Tomorrow I start looking for a new distro. Maybe I'll just go back to
Debian. It works and I've never seen them pull a stunt as stupid as
this. Yeah, they have do some pretty weird things. But I have never seen
them disregard all of their users. Anyone have suggestions?

This change is not only causing me physical pain it is causing damage to
my reputation among my friends and family. I converted my wife, my adult
children to Ubuntu, several friends, and other relations to Ubuntu..
They all also have to use Windows everyday to make a living. I am
already getting indications that they will be expecting me to reinstall
Windows on their computers if this bug is in the final release of Lucid.
I suspect that is going to happen all over the world. It is really sad.

I am sure that the folks are Ubuntu do not really understand just how
damaging a decision like this is. The reaction I've seen to this change
is a lot like the time a new guy decided to order the deep fried
jalapeños just because the rest of the development team were ordering
them. He was just down from Wisconsin and pronounced the word as if it
were English. That is, he said "j" as in "just" not the correct "j" as
in "hall".

Long story short. He liked the fried masa they were covered in. He had
no trouble with the cheddar cheese they were stuffed with. But, despite
repeated and intense warnings. And, an explanation of why they are
stuffed with cheese. He bit into the pepper. He turned purple. He tried
to

[Bug 544818] [NEW] [Lucid Beta] gnome-session elements are displayed fliped backwards and upside down

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

GDM shows up correctly, but once gnome-session starts the background
shows up then flips, and then everything shows up flipped. I do not know
why this only affect gnome-session?

[Bug 544810] [NEW] First line in email wrapping after one character

2010-03-22 Thread Simon Cropper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When composing a new PLAIN email and saving as draft. On entering the
email again to finish composing the email the first line is wrapping
after one character,; so "Hello World" becomes "H" "ello
World". If I create an email with the first line blank, every time the
email is saved then opened for editing another blank line is inserted at
the top of the email resulting in text creep.

Similar problems were also noted in the signature. Lines at the top of
the signature block (identified by the dotted line when you put the
cursor on the signature) multiply with each save and reopen. So the text
moves down the page and signature as well.

I have moved to using HTML and the exact same thing is happening.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create new email. By default I have a signature.
2. Type "Hi,"
3. Save.
4. Reopen.
5. In all my attempts I get "H" "i," followed by the rest of the
text, and an extra line in the signature box.

[Bug 544790] [NEW] Indicator in notification area appears and then disappears

2010-03-22 Thread Jonathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

[What you expected to happen]
The power indicator in the notification area that shows if the netbook's
battery level should always show with the current setting

[What happened instead]
The icon that indicates battery level would appear for a few moments and then
disappear.
This happens with and without the netbook being plugged in for charging.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-22 Thread krutoileshii
I guess i will add my 2 cents. window control placement really makes no
difference to me, except i find it useful when close button is opposite
of the minimize and maximize buttons as my aim is not that great with
the mouse.

i would be nice to have an option at install to pick the placement
though, for extra irritated people.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-22 Thread running_rabbit07
I have been testing this for a few days on my Netbook with touchpad only
and I think it does take more mental effort to go after the buttons with
them being on the left.

I don't have Lucid on my desktop machine yet, but I have changed the
buttons to match the new Lucid setup and. IMHO, it isn't a hard change
when it only requires one little flick of the wrist to move the pointer
to the left hand side.

I realize that Mark or at least the design team may have some plans for
what is going to happen on the right side and I am all for having
something that is unique to Ubuntu. I think there is a lot of knee
jerking happening and some people just can't handle change. If it is
decided that the buttons will stay on the left, there really needs to be
an easy GUI option for changing it from side to side.

In the Appearance applet, if one were to click Customize, there could be
a selection for left or right side button in the free space to the left
of the Delete button. Just a thought that I am sure someone may have
already voiced on the design team, but maybe others will agree that this
could help during the next six months, until the "new function" can be
added to the right side of the control panel.

[Bug 451171] Re: rhythmbox is consuming a lot of CPU resources

2010-03-22 Thread tocpcs
Same here, fully up to date, except the issue is intermittent for me.

I can be listening through a list of MP3s on shuffle, pause to make or
take a call, and then resume, and sometimes (not all), full CPU
consumption.

I can then pause, CPU consumption stops, play, and sometimes, not all,
it can resume playing without maxxing out CPU.

Also of note is the images for play, forward, rewind, disappeared.

Errors that I found running rhythmbox in GDB:

[Bug 542744] Re: user group administration tool freezes temporary and reports failed authentication even for successfull actions

2010-03-22 Thread Michael Mayer
Usually I prefer to use a simple "useradd -m", it was the first time
ever I tried the GUI for this simple task. And I checked the group
properties just to be sure that everything is fine. I did not realise
that the group is actually created, so I tried to do it by hand. Call it
a misunderstanding by an unexperienced GUI user ;-)

I think it is important to get the patch for the freeze fix into lucid,
but the other point is not really urgent, time to fix it for the next
release 10.10. Thank you for your quick replies!

[Bug 543537] Re: misleading timestamps in "ubuntu" theme

2010-03-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: empathy

the ubuntu theme shows misleading timestamps for messages in conversations
from previous days.
a conversation in empathy with the ubuntu theme enabled would look like this:

- "helle darling, please pick up the kids today" - 15:42
+ "darling, please pick up the kids today" - 15:42
"okay luv, no problem" - 15:29

in this example, the date of the first message can not be determined.
one may falsely conclude, it was sent on the same day

better would be, to determine wheter a message was sent on the same day, or
on a different day.
if the date differs, that information should be included in the message's
timestamp.
if the date of the message is TODAY, then the timestamp can omit that
information safely.

thank you abhishek!
due to configuration of my mailbox filters i failed to catch up with a few
messages here..
sorry Omer, i was quasi "away" for a while.

the above description is precise and describes my experience in ubuntu
karmic.

i am now testing the current lucid packages and am not experiencing issiues
of the sort.
yet the timestamp issue in the ubuntu theme remains..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/543537

anyhow, as far as i can see there is no such problem in empathy on lucids
social desktop.

[Bug 544743] [NEW] Incorrect placement of hyperlink anchors in certain PDFs

2010-03-22 Thread Robert Schroll
Public bug reported:

Poppler (and therefore Evince) place the anchors of hyperlinks
incorrectly with some PDFs. I've attached a sample PDF which displays
the problem. The link is the work "link" in the second sentence, but
Evince misplaces the anchor to around the word "[This]". The same
problem occurs when attempting to get hyperlink locations with the
Poppler library directly. Xpdf and Adobe Acrobat Reader both place the
hyperlink correctly. Evince behaves identically on both 8.04 and 9.10
systems.

I've only seen this problem in some PDFs created by LaTeX, so I've also
attached the LaTeX file I used to make the test case. The necessary components
are:
1) Setting the PDF crop box, with the bottom left corner not being (0, 0).
2) Using landscape mode.
3) Compiling through DVI (that is, latex > dvips > ps2pdf or latex > dvipdf).
This specificity might suggest a bug in LaTeX, but the fact that both Xpdf and
Acrobat place the anchor correctly suggests to me that LaTeX is doing something
unusual, but legal.

The PDF file created directly with pdflatex, also attached, has the
anchor correctly placed by Poppler. Perhaps some PDF wizard can compare
the two to find out what's different. (I do note that the two files are
cropped differently by Evince. I don't know if that's a clue or not.)

** Affects: poppler (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 508452] Re: wnck-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-03-22 Thread dmiller309
I think that this is my bug. I'm running 64 bit 10.04, and my appearance
preference for "Normal" visual effects as opposed to "None" is never
remembered after reboot. I manually went into
preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects and set them to normal. After
doing this, my four workspace switcher applet boxes that were arranged
in a square were rearranged side by side with space below them (in a
4wide x 2tall configuration, with nothing on the bottom). I right
clicked the applet to fix this, and after doing this, the applet
crashed. After choosing to reload the applet when prompted, the
application now displays properly (back to a 2x2 square). This has
happened before. For some reason, the window list applet also crashed,
and also reloaded successfully. I do not recall having experienced this
bug in 9.10.

I've no files in that format to test that on so I'm a bit reluctant to

issue

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-22 Thread Arturas K
than hardcore win user meets linux / gnome - at some point comes the
question “why on earth someone switched buttons ok and cancel on dialog
screens”. my response always is “to make you brainless monkeys read what
you are clicking on”. than comes some laugh...

the question about changed border buttons location, while other
distributions have it in default location, will be in the same
unanswerable never-ending league like “I can not find firefox /
thunderbird in debian”, no mater how many times you say “iceweasel /
icedove”... even worse - changed button location is not changed branding
- its fiddling with a habits, and habits don't go away easily!

by the way, most people I know, to increase productivity and working
area - kills top panel on site. this way an argument of preparing some
space for future improvements (my guess: deeper messaging integration,
or something cloud related) is more of feature bloating or buzzword
chasing instead of polishing useful bits already in there...

please reconsider, because the scale of average user irritation this
change might bring is mind blowing...

computer goes to sleep correctly.

[Bug 542541] Re: Volume slider inconsistency (doesn't change volume dynamically from 0%)

2010-03-22 Thread kyle
I guess it depends on your point of view. I found that taking a guess
and releasing the slider on what is hopefully the correct volume level
is a bit less intuative. I would expect the slider to behave in the same
way when sliding around normally as when sliding from the muted
position.

What initially prompet me to think of this as a bug was dropping the
volume slider about half way and all of a sudden having my movie being
blasted out a bit to loud. It's definitly a debatable point IMO.

Probably a question of what the expected result is to moving the slider
from the muted position. If that can be defined then it could be
classified (or rejected) as a valid bug.

@Sebastien: sorry, I'll try and be a bit clearer - what I noticed is
that if the volume is muted, and you click and drag the slider to any
position, the volume change does not actually come into affect until the
slider is released (as oposed to when it is not muted, the volume
changes as you move the slider).

[Bug 539734] [NEW] Sleep button on Thinkpad T61 does not work with Lucid

2010-03-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: acpi

When I press the "sleep" button on my Thinkpad T61 on Kubuntu Lucid it does not
work. It used to work with Hardy.
Triggering Sleep from the start menu works and the computer goes to sleep. It
also wakes up after reopening the lid.

Reproducible: Always
