[Bug 557057] [NEW] gnome applet menu bug

2010-04-06 Thread Jimmy Pinto Stelzer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

gnome-panel:
  Instalado: 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidato: 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Tabela de versão:
 *** 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Is expected that when the amount of menu items exceed the screen size,
you can select one item out of the viewing area by means of navigation
buttons as shown in this screencast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPjuy95CCVw

Instead of that, the last item drawed in screen size is always selected.

Sorry for my poor english.

2010-04-06 Thread Alex Emelianov
Chris: no, it's both volume/mute and display brightness keys. Original
functionality for brightness is Fn+F5 brings OSD, scroll wheel controls
the value. As of 10.04 Beta1, Fn+F5 brings OSD and decreases brightness,
Fn+F6 brings OSD and increases brightness; scroll wheel seems to be not
functional.

[Bug 553803] Re: Desktop "boarder" problem caused by theme changes

2010-04-06 Thread Ryan Vickers
That does sound like what I've been seeing, and the screenshot confirms
that yes - that is what I'm talking about. So, if that has been fixed,
then I guess we can consider this closed. If not, then I guess these

I'll do an update ASAP* and see if the problem goes away. I
wasn't/haven't been able to do one lately because I've been using the

[Bug 546688] Re: gnome/metacity full screen problem

2010-04-06 Thread oh
I confirm this bug, it seems that the .. hm, window manager, which I
imagine translates the key press into "do fullscreen", simply pushes the
key press onto the windows. For example, running "top" in an xterm I
get "unknown command" when I press my configured fullscreen key
combination while normally "top" would not see a keypress and the window
would be put into fullscreen mode (not maximized, but covering the
entire xinerama screen).

[Bug 556950] [NEW] weather applet doesn't display weather

2010-04-06 Thread whoop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I noticed that the weather was the same for a long time for my selected
location; it seemed like it was totally static (for more than 30 hours).
I decided to remove the location and add it again. After this no weather
came up at all. I also tried a totally different location, same result,
nothing.

This could be a regression bug...

Just now, the notification area reverted to its proper configuration,
showing the volume control, NetworkManager Applet 0.7.996, and the

refreshes the notification area display. I suppose this reduces the
severity of this bug to a mere nuisance!

[Bug 556918] Re: autologin still asks for password

Thanks, but that's not really a bug. The login passphrase normally
unlocks the keyring when you log in, so if you're using auto-login then

[Bug 556933] [NEW] "Update standard folders" should add language links to folders, not rename them

2010-04-06 Thread André Pirard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs

This applies to all Ubuntu (Gnome) versions up to 10.04.
Note: understand "Bureau" below as the name of any "standard" folder in any
language.

When a user changes the language of its profile she/he is asked a "funny"
question in Desktop-1.png.
"Update standard folders to new language?"
He/she does not understand and he replies "yes". From then on, obscure magic
happens.
Among other folders, ~/Desktop is renamed Bureau, but only if it is empty.
Let's assume it's not. Then a new ~/Bureau is created beside.
If the user drags "New file" (Desktop-2.png) a little bit, it disappears
(Desktop-3.png).
It will reappear after the next Login, at which time all the other Desktop
objects disappear.
Then she/he makes a screenshot and is told that a file she/he doesn't see does
exist (Desktop-3.png).
Nothing is lost, the user has 2 desktops, Desktop and Bureau, only now showing,
hard to guess.
The same applies for Documents, Music, etc... total confusion.
If some program unaware of this game looks for Desktop, it won't find it.
Etc... etc... Confusion looks like the comments of (different) Bug #209513.

This is obviously not the way it should work.
This is NOT Windows. We can use symbolic links.
Instead of renaming ~/Desktop, let's make a ~/Bureau -> Desktop symbolic link.
EVERYTHING will continue to be able to refer to Desktop unchanged.
And the user interface (Desktop, Nautilus...) will happily refer to ~/Bureau
all the same.
It will contain the same data, because the same folder.
The only setting needed is the name to use : Bureau, meaning ~/Bureau,
redirected at will.
It's best to create the aliasing without asking the user any question.
There can be a setting for those really wanting to see the folders' names in
any language they choose.
If the user changes language again, it's best to leave ~/Bureau intact in case
it's referred to somewhere.

The BEST OF ALL is that it already works. Almost...
Before xdg-user-dirs comes into play, make sure Desktop is not empty and create
~/Bureau -> Desktop.
xdg-user-dirs will not change that and the aliasing will work free of all those
inconveniences.

User experience.
The above kludge has been used for a 6-language 10-users couple of Ubuntu 8.04
systems.
Beside ~/ being crowded with aliases in 6 languages, the only inconvenience has
been Picasa.
They found 6 times the pictures they eagerly looked for.
They will have to learn that scanning a filesystem must not follow aliases.
Repeat, this is NOT Windows ;-)

I must disagree. It is impractical and impossible to put most UI widgets

fact, by doing this user's precision and concentration must be

2010-04-06 Thread Chris Coulson
gnome-media is recommended by various desktop components and is on the
default install. If it's not installed on your system, then that's not a
gnome-media bug anyway. It's more likely that it got accidentally
uninstalled during a dist-upgrade whilst the archive was in some
transitionary state (eg, version skew between arch-any and arch-all
packages when the builders of a particular architecture are lagging
behind a bit, which happened at the end of last week)

[Bug 556354] [NEW] Nautilus uses magic numbers but not Gnome file chooser dialogs

2010-04-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Many of my files lack an extension for convenience; Nautilus detects the
magic number inside most file formats using shared-mime-info. However,
the Gnome file chooser dialogues only use extension globbing,
independent from the MIME database.

[Bug 556900] [NEW] Main Menu applet: un-selectable menu items on menus that are larger than the screen height

2010-04-06 Thread Sameer Morar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04
gnome-applets:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1

Steps to reproduce:

1) Right click on a free area in the panel and choose "Add to panel..."
2) Select "Main Menu" (NOT Menu Bar!!), and click Add
3) Click on the Main Menu Icon, and locate the longest menu (probably
System->Preferences)
4) Resize screen resolution to ensure that the longest menu does not fit in the
screen
5) Try to launch any item on the menu below the scroll area

What happens:
When the mouse enters the scroll area, the menu scrolls down.
However, when the mouse leaves the scroll area, the menu scrolls up, and the
last visible menu item (without any scrolling) is highlighted.
It appears to be impossible to launch menu items below the scroll area using
the mouse.

What is meant to happen:
When the mouse leaves the scroll area, the menu should not scroll up, and
visible menu items should be highlighted by the mouse.

It is possible to select these menu items using the keyboard, so the bug
appears to be something to do with the mouse leaving the scroll area.

This bug is not present in the Menu Bar applet. Thus, the behaviour in
the menu bar applet should be copied to the Main Menu applet.

This bug has a large impact on netbook users that are not using the
netbook remix ui, due to the low vertical resolution resulting in
scrolling menus, and the need to replace the Menu Bar with the Main Menu
applet to conserve space on the panel.

package cache, in a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal )

[Bug 516520] Re: pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed

2010-04-06 Thread NoOp
Martin: as a test I created the user 'laptop' & modified the custom.conf
accordingly. Autologin to that username works (standard login does not),
but if I try to switch to another user from 'laptop' (ggserv for
example) I get the same results; gdm loops & sends me back to the
switcher password to get back into 'laptop'. Ctl-Alt-F1, login as 'gg' &
change custom.conf to 'gg', stop/start gdm & puts me to the 'gg'
desktop, go back to the console & exit & F8 gets me back to the 'gg'
desktop. I can repeat for the other usernames.

I then deleted 'laptop' (including home folder files), switch user from
'gg' and gdm menu still showing 'laptop'. So apparently deleting a user
from the Users Settings isn't working, there is no 'laptop' in /home but
I bring up Users Settings after reboot and I see that 'laptop' is still
listed as a user.

[Bug 556311] Re: gnome-panel freeze on cascading contextual app-launcher menu

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I found this bug yesterday (up-to-date Lucid beta1 64bit) while right-
clicking to try and remove directly some apps from the Gnome panel
Applications menu (wishlist: menu-editor shortcut via contextual menu).

  To reproduce:

  1. Open the Applications menu
  2. Open Graphics sub-menu (for instance, this is how I did and reproduced it
but suspect it can work with any)
  3. Chose an app launcher - I chose "Simple scanner" - and right click for
contextual menu
  4. Click so that one of the last contextual menus (i.e. Add as tray/menu)
opens without highlighting either of the choices
  5. wait for a couple of seconds with the whole cascading opened
(Appplications/Graphics/app context menu/add tray) and no final selection made

There it is, gnome-panel freezes. You can no longer use it.
Very annoying: the Gnome Applications menu is frozen and always on top.

Very very annoying: Alt+F2 launches gnome-application-control (Launch
application) but it is frozen so I needed to lanch system-monitor to
  restart gnome-panel.

+ UPDATE: reproduced with other menu launcher (OOo Writer for instance).
+ It seems that and the rolling the mouse over the main (Applications)
+ menu can cause the intermediate menu (Graphics, Office...) to close and
+ thus "break the chain" with the still-opened contextual menu (two 'Add
+ as' panes).

Note: it is important not to click elsewhere before the intermediate menu
disapears, and just roll over the first 2 menu panes.
+ First the highlighted choice in pane #2 (after the main #1 Application pane)
will disappear,
+ Then, back on the main pane menu, #2 will disappear altogether. Freeze should
be noted exactly there (if you click on #2 before it disappears it just
highlights another app-launcher and the bug doesn't occur).

[Bug 556809] Re: Crash report gvfs-mount during logon

2010-04-06 Thread Henk Bekkering
/etc/default/apport is already enabled, and there is a crash report
file.

double click on the crash report says:

The problem cannot be reported:

The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be
retrieved.
Apport does not support reporting these crashes.

What should I do (is it save to attach the crash file?)

[Bug 525284] Re: Brasero freezes the whole system when blanking a CDRW.

2010-04-06 Thread turbolad
I've been told this is similar to another bug: CD/DVD not recognised
after being blanked.

As I don't have any more blank discs, I cannot provide you with any more
information at the moment.

Please try using Brasero on as many Ubuntu systems as possible,
especially 64-bit ones (I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu), hopefully you will
find out more.

Cheers.

[Bug 556311] Re: gnome-panel freeze on cascading contextual app-launcher menu

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
Just updated the description since it seems I can reproduce the bug more
consistently now when rolling over the first menu panes (without
interfering with the right-click triggered 2 panes)

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I found this bug yesterday (up-to-date Lucid beta1 64bit) while right-
clicking to try and remove directly some apps from the Gnome panel
Applications menu (wishlist: menu-editor shortcut via contextual menu).

  To reproduce:

  1. Open the Applications menu
  2. Open Graphics sub-menu (for instance, this is how I did and reproduced it
but suspect it can work with any)
  3. Chose an app launcher - I chose "Simple scanner" - and right click for
contextual menu
- 4. Click so that one of the last contextual menus (i.e. adding a tray menu)
opens without highlighting either of the choices
+ 4. Click so that one of the last contextual menus (i.e. Add as tray/menu)
opens without highlighting either of the choices
  5. wait for a couple of seconds with the whole cascading opened
(Appplications/Graphics/app context menu/add tray) and no final selection made

- There it is, gnome-panel freezes. You can no longer use it. Logging out and
back in doesn't even restart it.
+ There it is, gnome-panel freezes. You can no longer use it.
Very annoying: the Gnome Applications menu is frozen and always on top.

Very very annoying: Alt+F2 launches gnome-application-control (Launch
- application) but it is frozen so most of the system is unusable unless
- you can work around thru desktop documents/launchers.
+ application) but it is frozen so I needed to lanch system-monitor to
+ restart gnome-panel.
+
+
+ UPDATE: reproduced with other menu launcher (OOo Writer for instance). It
seems that and the rolling the mouse over the main (Applications) menu can
cause the intermediate menu (Graphics, Office...) to close and thus "break the
chain" with the still-opened contextual menu (two 'Add as' panes).
+ Note: it is important not to click elsewhere before the intermediate menu
disapears, and just roll over the first 2 menu panes.

2010-04-06 Thread Zod
Hi Davide,

If I start the terminal from xterm, nothing happens. Gnome-terminal

I've just installed a clean Lucid for x64.
I can't reproduce the bug here.

I'll give it a go on a clean 32 bit install too.

[Bug 556809] Re: Crash report gvfs-mount during logon

2010-04-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 556809] [NEW] Crash report gvfs-mount during logon

2010-04-06 Thread Henk Bekkering
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

Based on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1186877 I created a
script which mounts three smb shares.

$ cat sharemount.sh
#!/bin/sh
gvfs-mount smb://barbabenno/hbe
gvfs-mount smb://barbabenno/we
gvfs-mount smb://barbabenno/mp3

And I placed the sharemount.sh in the Startup applications.

After login, I got a crash report, which could not send a report.
I saw the following lines in \var\log\syslog
