[Bug 565757] Re: gnome-typing-monitor icon is never displayed

2010-06-19 Thread Wayno
I added a new user via System/Administration/Users and Groups

It wasn't pretty (see newuser.png attached) -- I got a green background,
with a few icons on the desktop, and 3 toolbars:

top, bottom, right side.

And an error when I tried to logout. logout.png

Ouch!

[Bug 198162] Re: GNOME Bug Report Tool missing arguments

2010-06-19 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
I couldn't remember this discussion after a couple of years, but I was
amused by the comment and depressed to see that after two (more) years
things have NOT turned around. I still want alternatives to Microsoft's
awful software, but the major change of the last few years is that
Microsoft has apparently lost their drive to be the evil empire and
Apple has taken over as the leading contender (though Google is showing
increasing signs of evil ambitions and capabilities).

Comment 1: I have basically given up on Ubuntu, though I am still using
OLD versions on two machines. I have experimented with later versions on
several machines, and Ubuntu has become less and less ready for prime
time. I managed to avoid ever buying a Vista machine, Apple has dropped
out of my consideration, but I increasingly doubt any acceptable
alternatives will appear before I am obliged to buy a Windows 7 box...
Right now Google's Chrome looks to be the best alternative, but I feel
like I've wasted a LOT of time with Ubuntu, and that casts a shadow on
all of the Linux alternatives. (My company uses RHEL, which I've never
managed to like. If it was actually offered as an option on a machine,
I'd probably take it over Windows--but so far it has not been
competitive in the real-world market.)

Comment 2: I think the REAL problem is Ubuntu's financial model doesn't
provide sufficient push for regression testing against the pushes for
the development of new features. The most serious problems I've
encountered over the years are almost always breakage in old features.
The problems with new features are annoying, but rarely show stoppers.
Ergo, I suggest Ubuntu might be salvaged with an alternative funding
model that supported MUCH more testing, especially boring old regression
testing. Perhaps something like this:

http://eco-epistemology.blogspot.com/2009/11/economics-of-small-donors-
reverse.html

In applying the model to Ubuntu's situation, I think that the project
models should have substantial allocations for testing in their budgets
--but the virtual shareholders would also become the highest-priority
candidates to become testers. In other words, if you bought a share in a
particular project, you could also volunteer as a tester at that time,
and record your configuration. At that point it would be a bit of a
lottery, but essentially the Ubuntu people would be picking testers to
maximize coverage, and the winners would be paid for their testing work.
The value paid for testing would probably be more than the cost of
shares, so the winners would be happy and it would be yet another
motivation to support a development project. I think the main advantage
is that the projects would be buying testing from normal users--but
perhaps that's because I think that the earliest users of most programs
tend to be on the strange side or stranger. (The main risk might
actually be a kind of gambling by people who think they have especially
useful configurations for testing...)

I still want more options, and I wouldn't mind a bit if the Ubuntu
people could turn things around--but I'm not worrying about it at this
point, and I even resent the loss of capabilities and increasing
bugginess of newer versions...

[Bug 596193] [NEW] file-roller doesn't handle Mac OS X zip archives containing accentued characters correctly

2010-06-19 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Every time someone using Mac OS X sends me a zip archive with files
containing characters like é,è, etc. the following happens :

Re: [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-06-19 Thread 3esmit
There sould be a type of clipboard that references de opened program itself,
to keep also the old style, since some programs like programs suite (i.e.
adobe creative suite) have many types of data that it can be copy and pasted
as objects that one program grabs directally from other (i.e. copy a
photoshop layer to illustrator, the layers may be there in illustrator,
since it just got the same memory reference to the same generic data object)

By default, the XServer threats the good sense way for all programs that
just didnt care about the clipboard managing.

I like selection, I just wish I could reselect other text and drop the
selection over it (maybe a special modifier key?)
Selection should be 1. activated by user. 2. possiblity to program choose
ignore it when it wishes so.

Thanks all.

 *** WORKAROUND ***
 ---
Install klipper, glipper, parcellite or xfce4-clipman

When I copy (Ctrl + C, or right click and Copy) text from somewhere and
after that close the program where it is, the clipboard gets empty.

Steps to reproduce in gedit :
 1. Pick any text field that supports copying, copy some text.
 2. Paste into any other text field.
 3. It works.
 4. Close the source window or program.
 5. Paste now does nothing.

This bug will happen in any application that doesn't comply with the
 clipboard specification from FreeDesktop.
 http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ClipboardManager

There was also previous considerations about improving xserver-xorg
clipboard, which would reduce adaptation work from upstream projects to
 comply with the specification.

[Bug 585598] Re: Totem: In fullscreen mode, the Leave fullscreen button sometimes doesn't work

2010-06-19 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Probably it has something in common with compiz, because when the bars
in fullscreen get broken (the scrollbar is affected too) the compiz
mouse gestures assigned to the screen corners are active, but when the
problem doesn't appear, they are not active.

Sometimes they are flashing, other times they just disappear when
hovering over them.

Re: [Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

No, it's Ubuntu specific so far. Linux Mint is heavily based on Ubuntu,
which is probably the reason why both are affected, so it is still a
problem in Ubuntu only. Any useful information should be forwarded to
the GNOME bug report, there's not much else that can be done here we
have all the info.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-06-19 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Actually yeah, you are right, Mint is based on Ubuntu. This conversation
contains already too much info, I think. So just to conclude it:

1. it only happens at startup
2. if u reload the panel, everything gets OK
3. the corrupted icon greyed out and is not working, but if you still see a
little bit of it, you can click on that part
4. as far as I know, only the notification area or the Indicator applet session
button are affected

Possible solution: compare the differences between the way how is the
panel loaded at startup ←→ and how is the panel loaded back after
killing it

or

compare all that with the way how it works in other gnome distros

That is up to the developers, the users can't contribute any more.

[Bug 596142] Re: movie player plays downloaded material but very slowly is there a way to make it play at the right speed

2010-06-19 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2010-06-19 Thread neuromancer
@Matthew Paul Thomas
I've also tried unclutter and for me it's a good compromise.
1) in open office cursor disappear nearly immediately (between 1 or 2 seconds)
and this is very very comfortable when typing. If you move the mouse or change
current application (with alt+tab switcher or something else) mouse cursor
reappear.
2) in firefox cursor disappear both when reading something and when typing (in
awesome bar or search bar)
3) in gimp I've your behavior but for me it's not distracting because mouse
disappear only if you don't use it for a little gap of time (2 seconds I think)

In my opinion unclutter it's a good application that enhance the user
experience.
One possibility would be to have an option on systempreferencesmouse to
enable or disable the unclutter behavior, so any user can eventually change
it. (Default beahvior unclutter on mouse disappear after a little gap of time
[eventually configurable in this window too])

[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s

2010-06-19 Thread jerico
@Robert, I also had that first keypress effect, even before I
installed my workaround. Subsequent key presses are then ignored. I
/guess/ that this is due to the event being recognized but then the
brightness adjustment itself failing. I didn't have time to look at the
source code, though. I'll eventually do that when I find the time.

Can you please check, whether you have the
/proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness entry in your proc file system? If
so, does echoing values between 0 and 100 to that (virtual) file as root
change brightness? Make sure you use one of the allowed levels indicated
in the brightness file!

$ sudo su
# echo 40 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness
# echo 100 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness

If that did something then you're most likely able to use the workaround
I described. The brightness file might be named differently or reside in
a different folder of the proc system. In that case you can adapt my
script for your layout of the /proc filesystem.

@Serghei: Same thing for you: Do you see the system file I mentioned?
Can you change brightness manually? Your Laptop is from a different HP
product line so it is probable that your case is different.

@madbiologist: what's a problem file? Please, specify that, and I'll

doesn't refer what the missing codec is (OK, perhaps it does in the
screenshots, but I can't read them), it refers specifically to audio and
subtitles, but not to video, and was closed because it was lacking
necessary information to debug the issue.

2010-06-19 Thread Bright Lightning
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 453863 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453863

I also had this bug - when I open a video file (like an avi or flv or
mp4). However I found a solution on the ubuntu forums - I ran the
following commands:

rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/*
This removed the Gstreamer settings for the current user.

I then installed Gstreamer-Tools (check in synaptic to see if you
already have it, if not install it - or run sudo apt-get install
gstreamer-tools without quote marks).

and then ran the gstreamer-tools command:
gst-inspect
to rebuild the gstreamer settings.

This fixed playing the video layer for all these formats!

I hope you find this useful.

[Bug 596149] Re: gdm can't login to any session

2010-06-19 Thread kenjo
I now know what is happening. I had a large build system that failed if
/bin/sh pointed to dash so I set it to point to /bin/bash instead. That
is what makes the login fail. starting xinit then /etc/gdm/Xsession
gnome-session produces the following error

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/bash_completion.d/apport_completion: line 128: `_apport-bug': not a valid
identifier

setting back the /bin/sh link to dash makes it work and I can also login
from the normal gdm login screen.

So this bug should be moved to apport or maybe bash ?? but I do not
know how to do that

[Bug 595823] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media

2010-06-19 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting
aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on
an appropriate mailing list or forum.
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good
start for determining which mailing list to use.

Why it is worse to be able to format removable media than to just delete the
data on it (which every regular user can do as well)? Or do you suggest only
allowing read-only access for normal users? I think that would make things
worse and lead to situations like in Windows XP (IIRC), where you had to be an
administrator to burn a CD, resulting in most working with administrator rights
all the time.
I'm also unmarking this bug as security as this is an intended behavior of
gnome-disk-utility.

[Bug 232469] Re: wget does not use network proxy in some cases

2010-06-19 Thread Peter Hagen
This will surely work, but its for me not the solution to the problem.
The problem is not wget, but the sudo wget. If a user does a proxy
setting from the menu, and says 'system wide', it should work system
wide. For corporate administrators, this might be the reason not to
switch to 10.04. So, the default behaviour of sudo should be changed, in
my opinion.

@madbiologist: I don't think what you ask is a viable option, at least

I'm confident in that there must be a simpler way to address this bug.

[Bug 260918] Re: needed: libv4l and associated application patches (or gspca stopped working in 2.6.27)

2010-06-19 Thread Benjamin Drung
@Alessio:

1. I couldn't apply your patch:
patch: malformed patch at line 324:

2. To allow SRUs for older releases than lucid, you should add the
release version into the version string: 0.19-2ubuntu0.1 -
0.19-2ubuntu0.10.04.1

@Stéphane:

The patch from from Debian is shorter than the one from Fedora.
Therefore we should take the one from Debian.

I am unsubcribing ubuntu-sponsors for now. Please resubscribe the team
once you have an updated debdiff.

Second notice: I think it's better to open a new bug report for
camorama. This bug report is abused for too many packages.

[Bug 363326] Re: Brightness control doesn't work on Amilo mini UI 3520

2010-06-19 Thread David Tombs
Hi Janis, thanks for the report. I examined your ACPI dump and
unfortunately your BIOS contains no methods for modifying brightness at
all. :( Your only hope would be requesting a linux driver from the
manufacturer.

Requesting Won't Fix status for this bug.

2010-06-19 Thread Janis Petersons
Also here is the Windows application for using the keys, prepackaged by
Fujitsu Siemens. I don't know if this can help somehow, but it might
come in handy. :)

[Bug 397980] Re: evolution deletes all e-mails in a folder after renaming

2010-06-19 Thread dan downs
MartinE

Same thing happened to me, but all the mail is still in the file in my
case ... it's just no longer *listed* by evolution.

Type
grep ^Date .evolution/mail/local/thenameoftherenamedfolder
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2010 17:01:10 -0800
...
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 12:49:11 -0400

and/or

grep ^Date .evolution/mail/local/thenameoftherenamedfolder | wc -l
159

My thenameoftherenamedfolder has a first date of
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2010 17:01:10 -0800,
which is correct and I can see all the 159 emails if I look at the
actual file, even though evolution is only telling me that there are
only 14, going back 3 days.

Until I figure out the indexing problem, I did this:
d...@descartes:~$ mkdir .evolution.backup
d...@descartes:~$ cp -rf .evolution/ .evolution.backup/

Hope you recover everything.

Dan
