[Bug 198162] Re: GNOME Bug Report Tool missing arguments
I couldn't remember this discussion after a couple of years, but I was amused by the comment and depressed to see that after two (more) years things have NOT turned around. I still want alternatives to Microsoft's awful software, but the major change of the last few years is that Microsoft has apparently lost their drive to be the evil empire and Apple has taken over as the leading contender (though Google is showing increasing signs of evil ambitions and capabilities). Comment 1: I have basically given up on Ubuntu, though I am still using OLD versions on two machines. I have experimented with later versions on several machines, and Ubuntu has become less and less ready for prime time. I managed to avoid ever buying a Vista machine, Apple has dropped out of my consideration, but I increasingly doubt any acceptable alternatives will appear before I am obliged to buy a Windows 7 box... Right now Google's Chrome looks to be the best alternative, but I feel like I've wasted a LOT of time with Ubuntu, and that casts a shadow on all of the Linux alternatives. (My company uses RHEL, which I've never managed to like. If it was actually offered as an option on a machine, I'd probably take it over Windows--but so far it has not been competitive in the real-world market.) Comment 2: I think the REAL problem is Ubuntu's financial model doesn't provide sufficient push for regression testing against the pushes for the development of new features. The most serious problems I've encountered over the years are almost always breakage in old features. The problems with new features are annoying, but rarely show stoppers. Ergo, I suggest Ubuntu might be salvaged with an alternative funding model that supported MUCH more testing, especially boring old regression testing. Perhaps something like this: http://eco-epistemology.blogspot.com/2009/11/economics-of-small-donors- reverse.html In applying the model to Ubuntu's situation, I think that the project models should have substantial allocations for testing in their budgets --but the virtual shareholders would also become the highest-priority candidates to become testers. In other words, if you bought a share in a particular project, you could also volunteer as a tester at that time, and record your configuration. At that point it would be a bit of a lottery, but essentially the Ubuntu people would be picking testers to maximize coverage, and the winners would be paid for their testing work. The value paid for testing would probably be more than the cost of shares, so the winners would be happy and it would be yet another motivation to support a development project. I think the main advantage is that the projects would be buying testing from normal users--but perhaps that's because I think that the earliest users of most programs tend to be on the strange side or stranger. (The main risk might actually be a kind of gambling by people who think they have especially useful configurations for testing...) I still want more options, and I wouldn't mind a bit if the Ubuntu people could turn things around--but I'm not worrying about it at this point, and I even resent the loss of capabilities and increasing bugginess of newer versions... -- GNOME Bug Report Tool missing arguments https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198162 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
There sould be a type of clipboard that references de opened program itself, to keep also the old style, since some programs like programs suite (i.e. adobe creative suite) have many types of data that it can be copy and pasted as objects that one program grabs directally from other (i.e. copy a photoshop layer to illustrator, the layers may be there in illustrator, since it just got the same memory reference to the same generic data object) By default, the XServer threats the good sense way for all programs that just didnt care about the clipboard managing. I like selection, I just wish I could reselect other text and drop the selection over it (maybe a special modifier key?) Actually yeah, you are right, Mint is based on Ubuntu. This conversation contains already too much info, I think. So just to conclude it: 1. it only happens at startup 2. if u reload the panel, everything gets OK 3. the corrupted icon greyed out and is not working, but if you still see a little bit of it, you can click on that part 4. as far as I know, only the notification area or the Indicator applet session button are affected Possible solution: compare the differences between the way how is the panel loaded at startup ←→ and how is the panel loaded back after killing it or compare all that with the way how it works in other gnome distros That is up to the developers, the users can't contribute any more. -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 596142] Re: movie player plays downloaded material but very slowly is there a way to make it play at the right speed
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't
@Matthew Paul Thomas I've also tried unclutter and for me it's a good compromise. 1) in open office cursor disappear nearly immediately (between 1 or 2 seconds) and this is very very comfortable when typing. If you move the mouse or change current application (with alt+tab switcher or something else) mouse cursor reappear. 2) in firefox cursor disappear both when reading something and when typing (in awesome bar or search bar) 3) in gimp I've your behavior but for me it's not distracting because mouse disappear only if you don't use it for a little gap of time (2 seconds I think) In my opinion unclutter it's a good application that enhance the user experience. One possibility would be to have an option on systempreferencesmouse to enable or disable the unclutter behavior, so any user can eventually change it. [Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s
@Robert, I also had that first keypress effect, even before I installed my workaround. Subsequent key presses are then ignored. I /guess/ that this is due to the event being recognized but then the brightness adjustment itself failing. I didn't have time to look at the source code, though. I'll eventually do that when I find the time. Can you please check, whether you have the /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness entry in your proc file system? If so, does echoing values between 0 and 100 to that (virtual) file as root change brightness? Make sure you use one of the allowed levels indicated in the brightness file! $ sudo su # echo 40 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness # echo 100 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness If that did something then you're most likely able to use the workaround I described. The brightness file might be named differently or reside in a different folder of the proc system. In that case you can adapt my script for your layout of the /proc filesystem. @Serghei: Same thing for you: Do you see the system file I mentioned? Can you change brightness manually? @Stephen Monteith - One of the developers has asked a question in the upstream bug: what version of gst-plugins-good do you have ? [Bug 595823] Re: Non-admin users can format removable media
Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or forum. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good start for determining which mailing list to use. Why it is worse to be able to format removable media than to just delete the data on it (which every regular user can do as well)? Or do you suggest only allowing read-only access for normal users? I think that would make things worse and lead to situations like in Windows XP (IIRC), where you had to be an administrator to burn a CD, resulting in most working with administrator rights all the time. I'm also unmarking this bug as security as this is an intended behavior of gnome-disk-utility. ** Changed in: gnome-disk-utility (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid ** This bug is no longer flagged as a security vulnerability -- Non-admin users can format removable media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/595823 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-disk-utility in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 232469] Re: wget does not use network proxy in some cases
This will surely work, but its for me not the solution to the problem. The problem is not wget, but the sudo wget. If a user does a proxy setting from the menu, and says 'system wide', it should work system wide. For corporate administrators, this might be the reason not to switch to 10.04.
