I can confirm that the problem occur when two instances of gnome-
screensaver are launched by the system. For my part, the fact that 2
gnome-screensaver instances are launch at startup is unknown and appears
randomly.
using a console :

|-gnome-screensav()
$ kill -9
then do ALT+F7 to come back to your X session.
As my system have only been upgraded Ubuntu release to another (for
several years), may be there are corrupted config files that launched
two instances of gnome-screensaver, that is at the origin of the
conflict and cpu outage ...
I think #181065 and #458501 are duplicated bugs of this one.

Regardless of your opinion on whether applications should have Quit commands, Ctrl Q is now well-known enough that if it does anything in an application, it should be Quit. And just closing all Nautilus's windows does not quit Nautilus. This is a fundamental difference with Firefox. (Fun trivia correction: The Mac OS Finder has never had a Quit command. The clock just freeze at boot even if the process is running. With freeze I mean that the displayed figures don't change in time, and don't change if I modify the set up (show seconds on-off, show date on-off, show temperature on-off). I can access all the menus and sub-menus of clock-applet without experiencing faults or crashes. The only symptom is that the displayed figures are frozen. When I kill the gnome-panel process, clock-applet restart in a correct status, and everything then works well.
