Dana, the fn-key problem that you describe here also appeared when I
went from Karmic to Lucid on my HP ProBook 4510s, which has an ATI
Mobility Radeon HD-4330. The fn-key problem disappeared after I
installed ATI Catalyst Display Driver version 10.6, which I downloaded
from the AMD support site.

I've also run into this problem. I first experienced it a few days ago

I'm having the same problem again and it's not going away.

I'm going to try the 2.6.32 kernel mentioned in post #58 and #63.

[Bug 533775] Re: No icon for volume or typing break after upgrade to lucid

2010-07-09 Thread Ryan Li
I removed the indicator applet and typing break is supposed to fall back to
notification area.
However, under all icon themes of mine, the icon is shown as "icon
unavailable", as attached.

This seriously affects the functionality of typing break, since no
warning is given. Although the modification in lucid to adapt to
indicator applet is already a downgrade indeed.

[Bug 603833] [NEW] Defect; Maverick, opening a directory with an app improperly sets that app as default folder handler for Places

2010-07-09 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

By default there is no inode/directory= in
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

After a r. click -> "open with other application" and picking an app the line
is created with that app as first listed, which is proper behavior.
What's not proper is that app becomes the default for opening 'Places and
anything accessed thru Places', though not for dir.'s on the desktop.

Ex. this line will open Places and therein with vlc
inode/directory=vlc.desktop;

Proper behaviour is restored when opening a folder thru the r. click ->
"open with other application" and picking "Open folder" which creates (
or simply editing it so

inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;vlc.desktop;

Any add. 'open with's , add the .desktop to front of line and that app
becomes the default, ect.

Previously the first listed on inode/directory= was not the default - it
remained nautilus-folder-handler whether listed or not

2010-07-09 Thread joe robinson
I don't know if anyone has noticed but disabling compiz fixes two bugs
it fixes this one and when ubuntu goes into power saver if you have
firefox open you cannot type in the browser it also fixes this problem.
I know there is a bug report for that problem as well so you may want to
link the two. Oh and btw if you have the firefox problem i just
mentioned minimizing the window then bringing it back works as well.

[Bug 603789] [NEW] Gnome battery measurement error but KDE works fine (?)

2010-07-09 Thread Graham Carnell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Installation of Ubuntu ver 10.04 on a netbook, brand "Viewsonic" model
VNB100.

When the AC power fails the laptop immediately suspends instead of just
switching to battery power.

When installed Kubuntu 10.04 the power management works fine. So must be
some kind of PM software error...

I think I know why this problem exists, but not how to fix it. The power
management system seems to detect the battery as nearly exhausted as
soon as it starts to use it. The battery is actually fully charged, but
the laptop behaves as though it's critically discharged.

It seems to have problems knowing how charged the battery is, as power
management history shows the graph wildly fluctuating from almost
totally empty to fully charged.

If I could just fix it to "fully charged" or somehow fix the battery
status, I think this problem would be solved.

PS Just for the sake of completeness, I have to power on repeatedly to
get it to use the battery after AC failure or AC power removal, it also
refuses to stop powering down the HDD.

[Bug 462994] Re: Account details unremovable.

2010-07-09 Thread elderpyre
As speculated above, can confirm mission-control is holding onto user
log in data. After sudo apt-get purge'ing empathy and telepathy-*,
mission-control is still left running in memory. I ended up doing 'sudo
kill -9 pid' on the mission-control process in question before re-
installing empathy, but a reboot of the system would probably do well to
clear it as well. So quick recap, I did the following:

Went into Keyring manager GUI and removed entries for offending accounts
Opened terminal and did the following:
sudo apt-get purge empathy
sudo apt-get purge telepathy*
ps aux | grep -i mission
sudo kill -9 4462
ps aux | grep -i mission
sudo rm -rf .config/Empathy/ .gconf/apps/empathy/
sudo apt-get install empathy
sudo apt-get install telepathy-haze

Could have probably avoided going into the keyring and removing entries
if I had purged empathy and telepathy first, but didn't think to test
it. Not having the mission-control process die on a purge seems like a
major over site though.

2010-07-09 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-screensaver.

In addition, I can confirm this issue on 10.10.

[Bug 581838] Re: Manually created menu item in Gnome disappears from Gnome, Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit).after reboot

2010-07-09 Thread Tristam MacDonald
Regardless of whether the behaviour itself is a bug, the undocumented
nature of the solution is definitely a bug. I spent several hours
attempting to discover the cause of this issue, before stumbling upon
this bug report from google.

I would recommend that a simple wrapper around /usr/share/gnome-menus
/update-gnome-menus-cache be added to the default path (i.e. /usr/bin
/update-gnome-menus-cache), and that this tool be documented in the
relevant gnome/ubuntu documentation on manually editing menu entries.

However, given that gnome already detects any changes to
/usr/share/application/*.desktop, and updates the menus accordingly,
would it not make sense for gnome itself to update the cache when
needed?

[Bug 369405] Re: XDG menus do not update after a program installs

2010-07-09 Thread matteo sisti sette
Hi,
I'm not sure whether the problem I'm experiencing is the same as described here.

I have installed an application and it has added itself to the main menu.
That works fine and it shows up.

However, if I right click on the main menu and select "Edit Menus", the
newly installed application is not shown, so I cannot for example move
it to another submenu.

This will probably fix itself on reboot, but it is very annoying that
after installing an application, you have to reboot in order to have
"edit menu" recognize the changes made to the menu.

By the time, as a workaround, is there a way I can force the "edit menu"
application to reload the menus???

And is this the same issue described in this thread, or should I file a
separate bug report?

thanks
m.

[Bug 603707] [NEW] mouse pointer disappear while not move

2010-07-09 Thread Guria
Public bug reported:

mouse pointer disappear while not move. Maybe it proposed behavior, but
it introduces a lot of bugs. tooltips blink can blink, elements under
pointer can lost mouseover state, etc. In fullscreen game pointer jumps
every several seconds to place where it was a several seconds ago (I
think it doesn't detect that pointer changed its coordinates and on next
mousemove event set it to previous coords)

Maybe https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/16492 is
related to this bug.

[Bug 603289] Re: no login possible, xserver crash when pressing login

2010-07-09 Thread Thomas
Ok, found the problem. I have an uid of 500 for me. This is for
historical reasons to be compatible with any backups. So I had the user
list feature already enabled but by default only users with an uid of
1000 and above have been listed in the new gdm. This is why I had only
the login button visible (there have been no users with that high uid in
my system). However the "old" gdm seemed to go around this and prompted
me for a user since it got no valid user when I pressed the login
button. The newest release seems to dislike this and simply crashes.

[Bug 603435] Re: an error occured, could not open location; you may not have permission to open the file

2010-07-09 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

2010-07-09 Thread Thomas
Indeed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579044 looks extremely similar,
however I never did disable user listing nor do I have such setting in
my gconf files. But the result seems to be the same. Somehow I do not
have a user list and this results in a crash. Further more a have no
custom.conf which was removed to fix the issue. But will look deeper
into the system now if I can find an old setting somewhere. Please feel
free to duplicate my report.

[Bug 603662] [NEW] Support arbitrary time combo values in preferences dialog

2010-07-09 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I have changed the gconf value for keys like /apps/gnome-power-
manager/timeout/sleep_computer_ac to an unusual setting (15m, 5h), the
combo boxes in the preference dialog show nothing instead of the time I
entered.

This is a tracking bug for a patch for this issue that I sent upstream.

Looks like this is already well-covered in the other bugs. I'm fine with
closing this one if you'd like.

[Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp

2010-07-09 Thread Reiner Jung
Very strange: I was able to fix this by uninstalling nautilus-bzr and
the problem reappeared after installing nautilus-bzr.

I performed the following test:
1. Open a sftp mounted volume (got asked for the PW) when hitting ENTER three
times I get access to the volume
The .xsession-errors (bzr-installed-log.txt) shows some python errors and
permission denied entries
2. then I uninstalled nautilus-bzr
3. killall nautilus (which results in a respawn of nautilus)
4. Open a ftp mounted volume. And the system just shows the volume (no log
entries are produced)
5. Reinstalled nautilus-bzr => the error reappears

It works now; I already had the badge set up, but it wasn't working
before. Now it connects no problem.

[Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp

2010-07-09 Thread Reiner Jung
I am experiencing this on a 64-bit installation even after a clear
install. So it might be a 64 bit problem. However, I have no clues how
to analyze this problem. Is there any information available which
explains the auth stuff of gvfs and gnome-keyring/ssh etc.

[Bug 602932] Re: status change menu entries disabled after setting status to "logged out"

2010-07-09 Thread Daniel Kessel
I could reproduce it performing the steps mentioned above:

Reproduce:
1. Add messaging accounts to empathy
2. select status "available"
3. select status "logged out"

that gives me disabled status radio buttons and is reproducable.
