2) Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 from Canonical partner repository.

[Bug 604876] [NEW] Ubuntu not save brightness. The 'lower brightness' button on my netbook / laptop does not change gnome-power-manager setting.

2010-07-12 Thread cshong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

After install Ubuntu and boot into Ubuntu, the brightness of my laptop
monitor is 100%.

I press the 'lower brightness' button on my Netbook to reduce the
brightness. But, after reboot, it will be back to 100%.

The temporary workaround on this issue is to set the brightness by using
gnome-power-manager. Even I lower my brightness by pressing the button
on my netbook, the brightness does reduce but when I run gnome-power-
manager, the brightness setting in gnome-power-manager is 100%. I then
reduce set the brightness setting in gnome-power manager to lower value.
After I reboot, my netbook brightness did follow the gnome-power-
manager.

Please fix this bug. When I press the 'lower brightness' button on my
Netbook / Laptop, the gnome-power-manager's configuration should be
automatically updated, so that Ubuntu will boot with new brightness
setting.

[Bug 604778] Re: Evolution + attachment + 'Send to' leave a mailto: process consuming lots of memory

2010-07-12 Thread David Ordenes D.
Thanks, here is the report.

I found a simpler procedure to reproduce the error, typing in the console:
$ evolution --component=mail mailto:somevalidaddr...@gmail.com

Now the process stalls with or without attachment, after using the graphic
interface and sending the e-mail.
I ran Valgrind as described in the wiki page, sent the e-mail (it was received)
and after a long wait for some possible response by Valgrind (like 10 minutes),
I had to kill it:

I am also assuming that these packages are enough:
$ dpkg -l | grep -e 'evolution.*dbg'
ii evolution-data-server-dbg 2.28.3.1-0ubuntu5
ii evolution-dbg 2.28.3-0ubuntu10

Note: I only modified my e-mail address in the log.

[Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off

2010-07-12 Thread Owen Williams
This bug causes my laptop to get really hot, especially in the summer,
because the screen is acting as a radiator cooking my laptop. The
xrandr workaround isn't working for me because I'm using the proprietary
nvidia drivers. Maybe there's a way to disable any attached USB mouse
or keyboard when the lid closes, which will prevent the screen from
being woken up? that would work I think.

Rhythmbox should at least display a warning when trying to drag&drop

to install missing plugins package(s).

[Bug 604846] [NEW] Error receiving email "File is encrypted or is not a database"

2010-07-12 Thread David Lann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

System 10.04 with all current updates.
Evolution 2.28.3
Last week I had a issue printing a PDF attachment. I forced closed the print
job. Shortly after that time I was unable to receive email. I can send emails
but when send/receive is requested the "Error while fetching email". Clicking
on the error message shows "File is encrypted or is not a database". I set up
another laptop with the same versions (did not try to restore or move the old
information) and it sends and receives.

Ran CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution >& evo.log and received the following
messages in the top 25% of the log. Cannot find out how to rebuild the
database to resolve this issue:

EncSpot, whose tar file was released just before the originators 'closed shop' ?
On the other hand, you could simply add checkmp3 and run it in Terminal against
your mp3s, where it provides a better and more comprehensive report than other
tools etc that folk have been using and whose report details just happen to
completely agree with WinXP-hosted EncSpot analysis of my Sound-Juicer produced
VBR files.

[Bug 565757] Re: gnome-typing-monitor icon is never displayed

2010-07-12 Thread Kayon
This has been annoying me also since the upgrade to Lucid. It does not
affect Guest or other users on the same machine.

For me the simplest fix was to remove (or rename, in case you need to
revert) ~/.gconf/apps/panel. The downside is then losing all the other
shortcut icons I have placed on the panel over time - but that is easy
enough to restore - probably needed a cleaup anyhow. I did this after
exiting from the X session and logging in on the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1).

All looks good again now.

Thanks for the hint.

[Bug 164684] Re: tali computer players cheat

2010-07-12 Thread Benjamin
Hello out there, I hope someone eventually reads this and can answer my
question.

Concerning the supposed "cheating" of the computer players... they are
not cheating, it's just that the rules of the game's Gnome version allow
for multiple yahtzees (5 of a kind). I also manage to score multiple
yahtzees on a regular basis, sometimes as many as 4 in one game.

But what is a source of concern is the fact that the game has difficulty
settings. I cannot understand why a game that is supposed to rely on
chance has difficulty settings. It can only mean that the Gnome version
of the game does NOT rely on chance. Can anyone explain to me what is
going on in the game?

Thanx and ciao

[Bug 604784] [NEW] overwriting other image if saving a new picture at the same time in same folder

2010-07-12 Thread peter.mais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

in: Ubuntu 9.10
gthumb: 3:2.10.11-1ubuntu1

While I was processing an image (cut/crop and tried to save) I was scanning
(with xsane 0.996) in parallel images which were saved in the same folder.
Obviously I somehow saved my work in another filename! Means: Afterwards I got
the same image in 2 files, and lost 1 scan.
I was hard for me to reproduce, but I expierenced it several times.
It is lke this: while being in the window for cutting, another image was loaded
in the background. So at the point when i wanted to save my change, it was
somehow processed to another image.
In general one can say: gthumb reacts very sensitive when adding files/pictures
to the folder you are currently working in. (For me it seems like it is
handling the files in some kind of internal cache/list/whatever which screws up
if addidng files?)
(e.g. if I am in a diashow and adding a picture, gthumb stops the diashow)

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Mon Jul 12 21:57:03 2010
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 604778] [NEW] Evolution + attachment + 'Send to' leave a mailto: process consuming lots of memory

2010-07-12 Thread David Ordenes D.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I've been using Evolution 2.28.3-0ubuntu10 in Ubuntu 10.04 (and now also
testing in Mint 9, which is based in based in Lucid), and I've found this
problem consistently.
I have Evolution set as the default mail client, and when sending e-mails *with
attachments* using "send to" (from the context menu of a file in the desktop),
or "compose new message" in Me Menu, the mail is sent successfully, but the
associated mailto: process remains running, later consuming large amounts of
memory (even in the order of GB), making the system almost unusable. Killing
this process solves it all, freeing memory.
This doesn't happen when opening the Evolution main window and composing a new
mail from there, even if I include an attachment.
By the way, I am using IMAP with a Gmail account.

[Bug 604766] [NEW] gnome webdav wrongly interprets displayname property

2010-07-12 Thread Benjamin Schieder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When using a WebDAV server that provides displayname properties gnome-vfs
incorrectly uses those instead of the actual filenames.
For example, ownCloud (http://www.owncloud.org) provides a displayname
consisting of the absolute path and filename, all uppercase, for all entries;
if in the root directory you have two files foo.txt and bar.txt as well as the
directory foodir, owncloud will send the displaynames /FOO.TXT /BAR.TXT and
/FOODIR/ to the client. Doubleclicking the text files will then open them in
gedit and the filename will be correct.
Clicking on the directory /FOODIR/ will open that directory, but show all files
in there as /FOODIR/FOO.TXT and /FOODIR/BAR.TXT instead of the expected foo.txt
and bar.txt.
Also, uploading a file will fail because the upload will be tried as "PROPFIND
/FOODIR/" instead of "PROPFIND /owncloud/webdav/owncloud.php/foodir/".

[Bug 325157] Re: I could not empty the trash folder

2010-07-12 Thread rousta_b...@yahoo.com
Yonas: the bug is not fixed in all evolution releases, and we can't be
sure what platform Jack is on.

Jack, try this:

Quit evolution

from terminal, cd to the Evolution app directory.

Most often: /home/userID/.evolution

If that directory exists, then cd /mail/local

do an mv folders.db ../../oldfolders.db

do an mv *summary* ../../

This will get the summary files and database out of your way.

Start evolution up. If you have a lot of folders other than inbox,
display the contents of each in turn (evolution will rebuild the
contents of each before displaying them.)

If you had already issued the 'empty trash' command before getting rid
of hte summary and folder.db files, you may well find that it is already
emptied once you re-open.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Bug 489973] Nautilus cannot download OpenOffice files on a Secure WebDAV, but can transfer other files (PDF, DOC).

2010-07-12 Thread Greg Brown
I downloaded Lucid and ran it as a live CD. The problem remains exactly as
described. I can download and then open PDFs, RTFs, but not ODTs, for which
I get a "not found" or "unknown type" error depending upon exactly what I
do.

Thank you for your attention to it. Thank you.

As a side note, I don't think I'll upgrade to Lucid. I prefer the look and
feel of Karmic; also, Lucid's web fonts were poorly rendered on the live CD.
That might be fixable were I to upgrade, but I have Karmic working as I
like. If GVFS were working better, that would have changed my mind as I
miss the functionality, but I'm making do.

[Bug 604724] [NEW] pdftops loses grid lines

2010-07-12 Thread Jeff Strunk
Public bug reported:

We discovered that cups in lucid does not correctly print certain PDFs
when printing from the command line with lpr or as a shared printer from
preview in OS X. The same file prints correctly with cups on hardy. This
issue occurs with a variety of different printers.

I tracked down the problem to /usr/bin/pdftops by running the pdf
through the filters that cups does according to the log.
/usr/bin/pdftops is called by the cpdftocps filter.

This pdftops is installed from poppler-utils:
$dpkg-query -S /usr/bin/pdftops
poppler-utils: /usr/bin/pdftops

After running the pdf through each step of the filter, I opened it with
evince. After running through pdftops, evince showed exactly what I see
when I print the file.

Interestingly, if I print from evince or acroread, all the lines are
printed correctly. I think they are converting the file to postscript
themselves before sending it to cups.

I will attach the file that shows this behavior.

The pdftops provided by the cups package does not exhibit this problem.
$ dpkg-query -S /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops
cups: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops

[Bug 515915] Re: evince hangs on start-up

2010-07-12 Thread thephatness
Creating the /var/lib/samba/usershares directory seems to have solved
this issue for me. I tried this after discovering this line in the
~/.xsession-errors file:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:4650): WARNING **: Could not acquire name
Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net
usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory
/var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

No more hangs from opening PDFs from Nautilus or from within Evince.
Oddly enough, it still hangs when opening a PDF that's already opened.

[Bug 573486] Re: system restarts when I unplug the AC power

2010-07-12 Thread marianitn
I found that this is related to brightness control. When I change brightness
with AC power, the laptop reboots. So that was why it rebooted when on Battery
mode g-p-m reduces brightness.
Please tell me how can I help to solve this. I can provide any info you need.
I'm running 10.04 32bits on HP Pavillion dv4-2111la

Using Exposé is a little workaround.

In Exposé-View you can drag an drop app-windows. Its very fast, you dont
need to press any button, just assign one edge to exposé.

[Bug 604700] [NEW] Fn volume up/down/off repeates with next pressed key

2010-07-12 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

when I use the Fn volume up/down or on/off key combinations, the next random
key I type on the laptop keyboard repeats as many operations as I did before.
For example, typing volume up twice and then pressing Alt, I get two levels up
on
top of the two from the Fn keys after pressing Alt. Only when no external
keyboard
is plugged into the laptop.

[Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace

2010-07-12 Thread Rob King
I don't think anyone's ungrateful. The problem is that the default is
broken. On my system, "Normal" visual effects are enabled by default
(resulting in Compiz being used). In that configuration, I cannot drag
windows between workspaces - making the tooltips a liar. Can I survive
without Compiz? Of course. But new users are going to be confused when a
tooltip tells them they can do something and then they can't, especially
when they're running the default configuration. It reflects poorly on
the system.

Paul Beardsell wrote on 2010-06-15:
The only available workaround: Disable compiz. Compiz is but eye-candy, you
and your users will prefer Ubuntu with unbroken multiple workspaces. And
candy isn't good for you :-)

Some would say that complaining about this bug means:
* you misunderstand the Ubuntu bug reporting politics
* you are ungrateful about others' hard work
* you do not understand how X11 ought to work
* you are mentally unstable and ought to switch to Windows XP

I'm now compiz free for 18 months. One day at a time.

[Bug 603849] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in ect_check()

2010-07-12 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
However, processing the crash report to get detailed information for the
developers failed as the retracer did not generate a useful symbolic stack
trace.
Please try to obtain a backtrace manually following the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace (as an
attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your

[Bug 603941] Re: Evolution Freezes / Crashes Randomly

2010-07-12 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
