I opened another type of file (Matroska Video) and had a black screen on
startup. Clicking on a menu item showed the video again.

Re: [Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion

2010-07-20 Thread stlubuntu

Is there any way we could get the Ubuntu developers to take a serious
look at this
as it really seems like this might be something that needs fixed by
Ubuntu and not
upstream (i.e. kernel team, devicekit team -- something like that.)

[Bug 597540] Re: Setting "No sound" in Sound Preferences does not disable GNOME Login Sound

2010-07-20 Thread YannUbuntu
Hi Sebastien

indeed I was originally talking about both sounds. (that I used to mute
by setting my sound volume to mute before shutting down the computer).

But after checking :
- I don't have any more the music on session start (don't know why -> I will
check more), even if System => Administration => Login screen 's "Play login
sound" is activated and the "GNOME login sound" in "Startup program" is also
activated.
- the "ding" sound can be removed from the System => Administration => Login
screen

By the way, how do you "normally" activate/desactivate the music on session
start ?
is the use of "GNOME login sound" in "Startup program" redundant with the
"Play login sound" in the Login screen menu ?

I understand that the "ding" sound is an administrator preference, so that it
has to require the administrator password. it is logical to find it in the
System => Administration => Login screen , but many users will expect to find
it (also) in the "Sound effects" tab of the "Sound Preference" menu. So I think
we should add an option to activate/desactivate it (with password) also from
the "Sound Preference" menu.
(this could be simply a button to open the "Login screen" screen menu, but i
think it would be better to have a "Play login sound" line under the "Enable
window and button sounds" line )

[Bug 523299] Re: Lucid session idle timeout is too short

2010-07-20 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
I'm thinking enterprise setting/coffee break scenario here. 5-10 minutes
is reasonable, 30 minutes is an insanely long amount of time to leave a
work computer unattended and wide open to any passerby to fiddle with.
The default setting should be closer to a secure setting. Users who
don't need security (ie: home users) can disable automatic screen
locking or prolong the timeout.

This is similar in spirit to a no open ports/insecure services default
policy, or a default policy of asking a password to log-in (ubuntu does
offer you the option to autologin though).

[Bug 562509] Re: Automounts users autofs home directories by default (face browser disabled)

2010-07-20 Thread mwaltz
Just installed it on a 10.04 system and I'm still seeing GDM load a user
list and mount up all their home directories.

gdm:
  Installed: 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2 0

 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 0
500 http://apt/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

mwa...@tatl:~ $ mount | grep "type nfs" | wc -l
341

I tried to set the greeter to the simple login but I'm getting a gconfd
error which is unrelated. Still, even if the simple greeter disabled I
don't think it should be trying to automount all the users home dirs.

likely to expect -- especially new users. By default, window controls
should be on the right, with an easy-to-find method available for moving
them to the left.

[Bug 603169] Re: gdm crashes on every second LDAP login

It looks like this bug still has a possibility of occurring even if the

reproduce it very quickly. I found the backtrace in syslog though.

[Bug 596097] Re: evolution stores account information in .gconf

Hello Sebastien,

I actually spoke to Matthew Barnes concerning account info being stored in

Evolution has plans to change this moving account info to ~/.evolution (most
likely for Evolution 3.2, next March).
This bug is basically open to state the issue that if only backing up

[Bug 589655] Re: .ICEauthority and gconf-sanity-check-2 problems on login DOMAIN account

2010-07-20 Thread Jonathan Pierce
Exact same error messages seen on two different machines--one upgraded
from 9.10 and one installed from scratch. Both use domain logins and
NFS-mounted home directories (from Isilon storage, however, not
FreeBSD). Already tried removing and purging gdm then reinstalling the
package, no dice.

Fortunately, these are the only two Ubuntu systems in our environment.
The rest are Red Hat and have no issues with logins or permissions; was
hoping to switch all systems away from RH, but this is a huge
dealbreaker.

[Bug 601818] Re: Add more font appearance GUI settings

2010-07-20 Thread Tobias Wolf
Tuning the LCD filter weights is possible since FreeType 2.4.0.

  - A new function `FT_Library_SetLcdFilterWeights' is available to
adjust the filter weights set by `FT_Library_SetLcdFilter'.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freetype/files/freetype2/2.4.0/NEWS/view

You can install freetype2-demos on maverick to try it out. It is not
obvious to me how to find the optimal set of weights. probably needs
carefully chosen presets.

But all the higher level libraries need to pass through the options too:
fontconfig, Xsettings, Cairo, etc.

[Bug 607712] Re: .jar file should open with JRE instead of archive manager

2010-07-20 Thread zerwas
Thank you both for your comments.

> @Pedro: I believe zerwas means that when a .jar file is double clicked,
> rather than being opened with the archive manager
That's exactly what i meant, yes.

@Bruno: The question in your argumentation is how often it is _not_ the
case that a .jar file does not include a MANIFEST.MF file. I think that
this will almost never happen. All i know is that it is a quite big
usability problem as people are most often guided to use a terminal in
order to start the application. Regarding security, i don't think this
is a big problem because the executable bit is not set by default, just
like with .exe files; which are also opened with wine by default in
Ubuntu 10.04, if installed. So why don't do the same for .jar files? I
have often seen people despair of this issue, you can see several
threads about it in the german forums.

The process of opening Java applications should be as transparent as
possible and i would love to see a progress here for Ubuntu 10.10
already.

Bruno, i like your other ideas of a restrictive policy and an installer.
But of course this would require much more work than changing the
default "open with" from archive manager to JRE.

including a switch to Taglib#. Regressions in the amount of RAW

  * New upstream release 0.7.1 "The Big Switch"
+ Second release of the unstable 0.7 development series. Most notably
including a switch to Taglib#. Regressions in the amount of RAW
types supported, will be fixed before releasing 0.8.
+ Switched to a new Taglib#-backed metadata layer. This is a huge change
which should bring us increased stability (in the long run) and a much
easier to maintain metadata layer than the one we previously had. Also
enables some funky new features like XMP sidecars. (Ruben Vermeersch,
 Mike Gemünde) (LP: #279440, #69577, #260706)
+ Add support for XMP sidecars (Ruben Vermeersch)
+ Add "remove from camera after import"-option (Ruben Vermeersch)
+ Start of a massive backend cleanup (Mike Gemünde)
+ Upstreaming of a lot of Debian/Ubuntu patches (Iain Lane)
+ Several dialogs converted from glade to GtkBuilder (Ademir Mendoza,
Nick Van Eeckhout, Peter Goetz, Trevor Buchanan)
+ Code refactorings and cleanups, increased Hyena adoption (Evan Briones,
 Paul Lange, Paul Wellner Bou)
+ Small usability improvements (Alex Launi, Anton Keks, Iain Churcher,

[Bug 607712] Re: .jar file should open with JRE instead of archive manager

2010-07-20 Thread Bruno Girin
@zerwas: A .jar file can only be opened with the JRE if it's an
executable Jar file, i.e. if it has a Main-Class specification in its
manifest. If the Jar file doesn't have a main class specification, it
should be opened with the archive manager because it is not an
executable jar file. Opening a non-executable jar file using the JRE
would mean that as far as the user is concerned, nothing would happen as
the JRE would exit immediately. In terms of usability, this is actually
worse than opening all jar files with the archive manager.

@Pedro: I believe zerwas means that when a .jar file is double clicked, rather
than being opened with the archive manager, it should be run using the
following command:
java -jar /path/to/jar/file
This actually executes the Jar file, if and only if it contains a
META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file that itself contains a line starting Main-Class: as
explained here: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/introcs/85application/jar/jar.html

Having said this, I have reservation about being able to do run
executable jar files like this because it would mean that you could run
third party code contained in a jar file by just double clicking on it,
irrespective of whether the execute bit is set or not. In order not to
compromise security when doing this, you would need to run the JRE with
a restrictive security policy. Another alternative would be to treat
executable Jar files in a similar way to .deb files: open a dedicated
Java package installer that registers the Jar file as an application.

[Bug 319726] Re: clock applet, system tray stop updating when the panel is hidden

2010-07-20 Thread Alexandre Gauthier
I am affected by this as well. It only began happening since recently.
Recent changes on my system would be:

* Upgrading to grub2
* Enabling framebuffer for kernel with uvesafb
* installing gnome-do and docky
* Completely redoing the panels on my desktop.

I deleted and re-added the clock applet, too, it may be related.

I noticed that whenever this happens, the entire panel becomes "frozen".
It works, can be used, but applets within never refresh. For instance
the virtual desktop chooser works fine but the tiny window previews
inside don't reflect reality anymore.

Running on 10.04 x86_64, fully up to date, nvidia-current.

1. Is this reproducible?
Yes, it is.

2. If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? Be as
detailed as possible.
Like I said, this occurs with every folder I open, with the exception of *very*
tiny folders (like folders with one file only).

If this can help: I tested both the nvidia and nouveau drivers without
noticeable changes. Therefore, it is not related to X.

No point to create account and waste their space to possible only one feature
request for my part.

[Bug 606012] Re: Nautilus FTP will clear (0 bytes) files on server

2010-07-20 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the
software. You can learn more about how to do this at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. Thanks in advance! btw
that's probably a gvfs issue, reassigning.

[Bug 607793] Re: Audio preview of CD tracks fails if totem is not installed

2010-07-20 Thread Olivier Tilloy
The issue is with the way nautilus builds the URI to pass to playbin.
The attached patch mimics totem's behaviour to build URIs that playbin
is happy with.

[Bug 607793] [NEW] Audio preview of CD tracks fails if totem is not installed

2010-07-20 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

To perform audio preview, Nautilus uses totem-audio-preview. If not
present (i.e. if totem is not installed), it falls back on gst-
launch-0.10 with a playbin pipeline. Unfortunately playbin doesn't
understand the cdda:// URIs when trying to preview tracks on an audio
CD.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Uninstall totem:
sudo apt-get remove totem
2) Install gstreamer0.10-tools:
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-tools
3) Make sure audio previews are active:
gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/preview_sound
"always"
4) Insert an audio CD, when prompted what to do choose "Open Folder"
5) Hover the mouse cursor over one of the tracks in nautilus (typically "Track
n.wav")

Expected result: after a delay (about 1 second), the track starts playing.
Current result: nothing happens.

Note that when totem is installed, the preview works.

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1

[Bug 410337] Re: Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do

2010-07-20 Thread Wesley Werner
I'm confused about the status of this bug, It doesn't seem like the
upstream "Fix Released" status resolved this issue. Lucid Lynx still has
the behavior described in the OP, shown in attachment login-screens.png
for reference:

* image 1 - single user login screen
* image 2 - multiple user login screen
* image 3 - user password prompt

>From this we see:

* Multiple users make it more clear which user is selected by default (image
2), compared to a single user (image 1)
* Selecting a user prompts for the password (image 3), note this screen does
not have the "Other..." login action.

Consider that if we do show the "Enter Password" screen automatically
(image 3), in the case where there is only one user, then the "Other..."
login action won't be visible at first sight. The user will need to
press "Cancel" to get back to choose the "Other..." option, which just
introduces a level of ambiguity, more so than the current issue.

Hovering the mouse over a user shows a tool tip "Log in as wesley" (not
captured in the screen shots). I think extending these tips to a text
label below the login area, will make your selection more clear.
