Is there any way we could get the Ubuntu developers to take a serious look at this as it really seems like this might be something that needs fixed by Ubuntu and not upstream (i.e. kernel team, devicekit team -- something like that.) [Bug 597540] Re: Setting "No sound" in Sound Preferences does not disable GNOME Login Sound
Hi Sebastien indeed I was originally talking about both sounds. (that I used to mute by setting my sound volume to mute before shutting down the computer). But after checking : - I don't have any more the music on session start (don't know why -> I will check more), even if System => Administration => Login screen 's "Play login sound" is activated and the "GNOME login sound" in "Startup program" is also activated. - the "ding" sound can be removed from the System => Administration => Login screen By the way, how do you "normally" activate/desactivate the music on session start ? is the use of "GNOME login sound" in "Startup program" redundant with the "Play login sound" in the Login screen menu ? I understand that the "ding" sound is an administrator preference, so that it has to require the administrator password. it is logical to find it in the System => Administration => Login screen , but many users will expect to find it (also) in the "Sound effects" tab of the "Sound Preference" menu. So I think we should add an option to activate/desactivate it (with password) also from the "Sound Preference" menu. (this could be simply a button to open the "Login screen" screen menu, but i think it would be better to have a "Play login sound" line under the "Enable window and button sounds" line ) -- Setting "No sound" in Sound Preferences does not disable GNOME Login Sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/597540 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-media in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 523299] Re: Lucid session idle timeout is too short
I'm thinking enterprise setting/coffee break scenario here. 5-10 minutes is reasonable, 30 minutes is an insanely long amount of time to leave a work computer unattended and wide open to any passerby to fiddle with. The default setting should be closer to a secure setting. Users who don't need security (ie: home users) can disable automatic screen locking or prolong the timeout. This is similar in spirit to a no open ports/insecure services default policy, or a default policy of asking a password to log-in (ubuntu does offer you the option to autologin though). -- Lucid session idle timeout is too short https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523299 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 607712] Re: .jar file should open with JRE instead of archive manager
Thank you both for your comments. > @Pedro: I believe zerwas means that when a .jar file is double clicked, > rather than being opened with the archive manager That's exactly what i meant, yes. @Bruno: The question in your argumentation is how often it is _not_ the case that a .jar file does not include a MANIFEST.MF file. I think that this will almost never happen. All i know is that it is a quite big usability problem as people are most often guided to use a terminal in order to start the application. Regarding security, i don't think this is a big problem because the executable bit is not set by default, just like with .exe files; which are also opened with wine by default in Ubuntu 10.04, if installed. So why don't do the same for .jar files? I have often seen people despair of this issue, you can see several threads about it in the german forums. The process of opening Java applications should be as transparent as possible and i would love to see a progress here for Ubuntu 10.10 already. Bruno, i like your other ideas of a restrictive policy and an installer. [Bug 607712] Re: .jar file should open with JRE instead of archive manager
@zerwas: A .jar file can only be opened with the JRE if it's an executable Jar file, i.e. if it has a Main-Class specification in its manifest. If the Jar file doesn't have a main class specification, it should be opened with the archive manager because it is not an executable jar file. Opening a non-executable jar file using the JRE would mean that as far as the user is concerned, nothing would happen as the JRE would exit immediately. In terms of usability, this is actually worse than opening all jar files with the archive manager. @Pedro: I believe zerwas means that when a .jar file is double clicked, rather than being opened with the archive manager, it should be run using the following command: java -jar /path/to/jar/file This actually executes the Jar file, if and only if it contains a META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file that itself contains a line starting Main-Class: as explained here: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/introcs/85application/jar/jar.html Having said this, I have reservation about being able to do run executable jar files like this because it would mean that you could run third party code contained in a jar file by just double clicking on it, irrespective of whether the execute bit is set or not. In order not to compromise security when doing this, you would need to run the JRE with a restrictive security policy. Another alternative would be to treat executable Jar files in a similar way to .deb files: open a dedicated Java package installer that registers the Jar file as an application. -- .jar file should open with JRE instead of archive manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607712 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 319726] Re: clock applet, system tray stop updating when the panel is hidden
I am affected by this as well. It only began happening since recently. Recent changes on my system would be: * Upgrading to grub2 * Enabling framebuffer for kernel with uvesafb * installing gnome-do and docky * Completely redoing the panels on my desktop. I deleted and re-added the clock applet, too, it may be related. I noticed that whenever this happens, the entire panel becomes "frozen". It works, can be used, but applets within never refresh. [Bug 607793] [NEW] Audio preview of CD tracks fails if totem is not installed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus To perform audio preview, Nautilus uses totem-audio-preview. If not present (i.e. if totem is not installed), it falls back on gst- launch-0.10 with a playbin pipeline. Unfortunately playbin doesn't understand the cdda:// URIs when trying to preview tracks on an audio CD. Steps to reproduce: 1) Uninstall totem: sudo apt-get remove totem 2) Install gstreamer0.10-tools: sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-tools 3) Make sure audio previews are active: gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/preview_sound "always" 4) Insert an audio CD, when prompted what to do choose "Open Folder" 5) Hover the mouse cursor over one of the tracks in nautilus (typically "Track n.wav") Expected result: after a delay (about 1 second), the track starts playing. Current result: nothing happens. Note that when totem is installed, the preview works. [Bug 410337] Re: Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do
I'm confused about the status of this bug, It doesn't seem like the upstream "Fix Released" status resolved this issue. Lucid Lynx still has the behavior described in the OP, shown in attachment login-screens.png for reference: * image 1 - single user login screen * image 2 - multiple user login screen * image 3 - user password prompt >From this we see: * Multiple users make it more clear which user is selected by default (image 2), compared to a single user (image 1) * Selecting a user prompts for the password (image 3), note this screen does not have the "Other..." login action. Consider that if we do show the "Enter Password" screen automatically (image 3), in the case where there is only one user, then the "Other..." login action won't be visible at first sight. The user will need to press "Cancel" to get back to choose the "Other..." option, which just introduces a level of ambiguity, more so than the current issue. Hovering the mouse over a user shows a tool tip "Log in as wesley" (not captured in the screen shots). I think extending these tips to a text label below the login area, will make your selection more clear. ** Attachment added: "login-screens.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/52212756/login-screens.png -- Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/410337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
