[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid
Hi Virgil, Thanks for the tip. :) Actually, this is a good idea. Yet, this is not the case. As I wrote, a Celeron 667 with 256 MiB of RAM swaps, but works. A Celeron 600 with 384 MiB does not. -- gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542343 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid
Alvils Berzins, perhaps try setting the swappiness parameter to vm.swappiness=100 on machines with low ram. I find this makes things much smoother. To do so: 1. Open this text file as root: /etc/sysctl.conf 2. Append this to the end: vm.swappiness=100 3. Reboot.
Hmm, I must admit this seems like some kind of a race condition to me. As Lucid in general starts up processes "in parallel", then in a case where the system performance is not adequate, things might go south. To test this, I have assembled two machines of notably low performance. The first one is running on a Celeron 667 (sic) MHz CPU. Initially I put 256 megs of RAM into it. It has a 20 GiB hard drive. Swapping as hell, it worked, apart from the fact that its i740 video card didn't support resolutions higher than 800x600 and so I was forced to generate an xorg.conf file and use the vesa driver. But that's another issue. Adding an additional 256 MiB helped to remedy the swapping issue, and, although pretty slow, it still worked. The second one is the precise Intel Desktop Board with the i815 chipset mentioned in post #38. It has a Celeron 600 MHz CPU and 384 MiB of RAM installed. It uses the embedded video. Oh my - the first logon works as it should, as perhaps the configuration files are generated/cached, but the second one has no panel. Actually the panel launches, and pressing Ctrl+Alt+T to open the terminal and issuing `sudo killall gnome-panel` brings it back up. I tried to edit the /usr/share/applications/gnome-panel.desktop file and uncomment the X-gnome-autostart-phase=Panel line. After doing that, deleting ~/.g* directories and rebooting the panel came up again. And so after several restarts. But then I realized another issue - Nautilus does things the same way, so, although the panel is up, the desktop icons ain't. :( Needless to say that after installing the updates the .desktop files were changed back to original, so just editing them is not enough, as any updates could put "things back to normal". I suspect the problem is Celeron 600's performance. I have a Celeron 766 MHz somewhere at home, so if I find it, I'll try to install that CPU on the faulty PC and see whether startup works normally then. It could be that the critical line for using a Celeron CPU is somewhere between 600 and 667 MHz. At least in the configuration I used. Anyway, regardless of whether my tests will be successful, the very main issue that creates such behaviour is the one Lucid developers are proud of - parallel starting of processes. While giving an advantage on modern multi-core CPUs, this may not work on slower machines. I would be very glad in this regard if there was an option available during the installation (and maybe also afterwards) that would allow me to choose whether I want to start processes in parallel or in a sequential manner, so owners of older and slower machines (anyway, Celeron 600 is still enough for my Grandma to read e-mails) could also run Lucid. At the very least, update manager should not try to be smarter than me and change the .desktop files back to "original". If I have edited them, I think I know what I'm doing and WHY I am doing that... :( So, the bottom line of this is: I strongly suspect that this "bug" is created by the parallel starting of processes. If a machine, for whatever reason, does not have enough horsepower, a race condition could appear. The obvious solution would be to allow the user to choose a "compatibility mode" where those Gnome things would be started up in a sequential manner. I will inform you later (after about 10 hours) whether upgrading the CPU to 766 MHz has solved the issue. -- gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542343 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
exitance says it pretty well. And I'll add my recent observation that it doesn't make sense that "You're going for the keyboard anyway, hitting F2 isn't interruptive," because 90% of the time when I'm renaming a file I'm not totally renaming it. Instead I'm editing it, keeping most of the text. Meaning once the filename is in edit mode I click to specify where I'm adding text or which word(s) I'm replacing. So instead the workflow looks like this: Mouse to select file, Keyboard to F2 into rename mode, Mouse to select cursor position in filename, Keyboard to type change in filename. If I could rename with a second click, there would be one modal switch instead of three. Oh, and right-click, then find and select Rename from the context menu isn't much better. [Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP
I upgraded my family data and backup servers from 8.04 to 10.04. Both servers are "happily living" in my basement and they don't have monitor, keyboard or mouse, as I have previously maintained them remotely through XDMCP. OK - I was stupid as I did not find out this problem before updating. My humble request is that XDMCP support (including GUI to switch it on) would be returned to Ubuntu as soon as possible. About safety issues with XDMCP - I am working in a very large IT company and it is happily using XDMCP. Previously there was an option to use either Citrix or XDMCP for remote access, but our IT department decided to ramp down Citrix. Re: [Bug 574876] Re: swell-foop segfaults with error 4 in libclutter-glx-1.0.so.0.200.4
I would agree, the interface to the old version of the game was vastly superior in appearance, performance and general useability. Plus it did not have any noticeable bugs. The new version seems like a rather incomplete alpha release rather than a production-worthy application. Besides this annoying seg-fault bug, the new interface frequently bogs down to the point that screen refreshes after block removal can take seconds to complete (and this is on a 4GB i5 machine doing nothing else significant). Additionally, some major functionality remains unimplemented (undo for example). Makes me wish I knew something about Gnome coding; it could be an interesting project to work on. [Bug 610513] [NEW] Power manager does "critically low power" option immediately after unplugging from power with old battery
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Package: /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager Ubuntu Release: 10.04 I expect that the power manager will fire off the "critically low battery" option when the battery has a small percentage of it's power left, or a small estimated time remaining (5mins). This way instead of the computer simply running out of power, it instead shuts itself down. I have an older battery in my laptop that doesn't work very well, but it still works. When I boot up Ubuntu it tells me that I have a low capacity (34.5%) on my battery when fully charged, and it may be broken. The problem is that the instant I pull the power plug out of my laptop, a window pups up that the computer is going to hibernate. Regardless of if I hit cancel or OK, the computer goes into hibernate a couple seconds later. This shouldn't be happening because I can run my laptop for over 30 minutes on a full battery. I am guessing this has something to do with my "broken" battery and the way the power manager calculates what falls into the category of critical battery life. [Bug 608833] Re: Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable
I've had this problem since 9.10. It only started affecting me badly enough to want to do something yesterday, and now I find there is a bug report for it. Here's my setup, which differs in a number of ways to jpangamarca's - specifically, I'm using the open source radeon driver and I'm not using compiz at all. DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 (also affected me in 9.10) Package: gnome-panel 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu0.2_i386 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-23.37-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-24-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Jul 27 16:34:04 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_GB.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: gnome-panel I have a mouse button remapping using xmodmap, as my mouse needs buttons 1 and 3 remapped to 8 and 9 when it is used in presenter mode. I'm using the Human theme with a small number of customisations. The problem happens with Firefox, Nautilus and maybe one or two other apps open, but I have tried not using each of the other apps for a time, and it still happens in the absence of other apps. Firefox and nautilus are often open for long periods of time - like between kernel updates. Other things I have noticed which may or may not be relevant: Sometimes you can get out of the hang by switching to a virtual terminal then back to X. Closing nautilus sometimes causes the problem to go away. Often a click away from the panel causes the item on the panel which is above the mouse pointer to be activated - sometimes u clicking a different button un-freezes the panel when this happens. The panel is set to autohide, and one of the symptoms is it gets stuck in either hidden or non-hidden mode. Clicking on other applications buttons has no effect, although sometimes opening a panel menu and clicking elsewhere on the desktop brings it out of that mode. I have seen similar behaviour when the machine is running very low on memory. I do not get the behaviour on my other machine, which is rarely on for more than a few hours continuously, and which is almost identical other than having a more recent ATI graphics card, and uses fglrx. As I see this problem pretty regularly, I can probably provide a backtrace fairly soon if needed. -- Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608833 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41427] Re: "slow keys" can turn on surreptitiously & cause confusion.
I have hit this bug before many times on previous versions of Ubuntu and now on Lucid (10.04). Usually, I go to tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1 works) and then I kill compiz, which magically restores my keyboard and mouse input. This time that didn't work so I left the window open and went to another computer to research this. Then I found bug 59616 which is marked as a duplicate of this one. On one of the comment (Lars) it's mentioned to remove .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-/0/%gconf.xml and retry. Well, since I had a problem with the mouse too, I moved the whole "peripherals" directory to /tmp and lo and behold, that did the trick. In our case touchpad working well before press the enable/ disable switch.. e then the pad still working but the GUI has problems (freeze buttons, etc.) ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Fedora) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- HP touchpad-disable switch damages mouse and focus capability https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546503 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 579082] Re: Inbox folder tree is unresponsive
Ubuntu 10.04 evolution 2.28.3 I am experiencing the *exact* same problem! I have configured just one e-mail account (IMAP with SSL) Clicking the + to expand a folder is something like rolling dice. Gambling on and clicking randomly *near* the + (just before/above/below/after) will often allow me to expand the tree after a few tries. However, with the expanded root folder still selected, clicking any subfolder will collapse the root folder again! With the root folder expanded I can only go into one of the subfolders using the down arrow key. I know only little about Evolution or Gnome internals and nothing about how to file this as a bug elsewhere. I only experience this bug in Evolution. So I hope one of the developers here will be so kind to pick this up to get it to the right people. Thanks in advance! I am ofcourse willing to perform tests or provide additional information if requested. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@ willdye, and others "I strongly believe that default settings in general should do whatever users are most likely to expect -- especially new users" I remember that the main problem about the layout was "The new users will complain and dislike the left side buttons". There are hundreds of new launchpad members every day seeking a solution to their problems on "Ask A Question", so please, the math is simple, ask the moderators of launchpad to find all the issues associated with Left Layout and once we analyze it, it's worth to continue the discussion here. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
