[Bug 622096] [NEW] computer "failed" to suspend with fn+f4 but suspends from menu

2010-08-21 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When two people are logged into my ThinkPad X61, sometimes Ubuntu
refuses to suspend using the keystroke fn+f4, which is the normal way.
The message is "Your computer failed to suspend. The failure was
reported as: Cannot suspend" which by the way is also a rather pointless
and uninformative message. However, if I use the mouse to select
suspend from the menu in the upper right corner of the panel, it works
fine. So the problem is obviously with the handling of the function
key.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Alexander Pavlov
Let just me stress the importance of this bug once more, cause English-speaking
users may not readily appreciate it.
A large part of non-English people use at least two keyboard layouts: one for
their native language and one for Latin script: web addresses, programming,
whatever. A common way to switch layouts (wherever it comes from) is pressing
Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift. If you use any of these in Ubuntu, you lose it for all
shorcuts. Ctrl-shift arrows don't work, etc etc.
We are talking about huge productivity impairment - the loss of keyboard
shortcuts - in all apps systemwide, for whole countries.

[Bug 622055] [NEW] When searching, going "up" should return to the directory in which the search was performed.

2010-08-21 Thread Ryan Thompson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I am in the "Documents" folder and I perform a search using e.g.
Control+F, I am now looking at search results for all files within the
Documents folder. At this point, pressing the "Up" button or Alt+Up
arrow on my keyboard should take me to a normal view of the documents
folder.

Currently, the up button is disabled in searches.

In other words, the "parent" directory of a search should be that
search's root directory.

[Bug 622051] [NEW] Cannot change Artist Sort error, Rythmbox reports "Internal GStreamer error"

2010-08-21 Thread Jim Patterson
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

Rhythmbox frequently fails to change the Artist Sort Order property. I
think I've seen similar errors on other properties as well. This has a
high probability of occurring when changing multiple tracks at once e.g.
switching a property an entire album. However, even though it's more
likely to succeed if done track-by-track, it still happens even then.

I'm using Rhythmbox to maintain a collection of Ogg Vorbis audio files,
and these properties, I believe, are kept within the actual music files
(but that's a guess on my part).

When the action fails, I get two message boxes from Rhythmbox, and as
expected, the property does not get changed in the track file.

*Error while saving song information* internal data stream error
*Error while saving song information* Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug

rhythmbox:
  Installed: 0.12.8-0ubuntu7
libgstreamer0.10-0:
  Installed: 0.10.28-1

I would expect to be able to change the property - there is no reason it
should prevent me. Usually, repeating the action on individual tracks
will work. Sometimes, restarting Rhythmbox seems to help.

And, btw, we should probably move the bug to the appropriate package (it is not

[Bug 621968] Re: New Wave Metacity border glitches

2010-08-21 Thread Tony Prynn
This is related to Compiz or how Compiz interacts with these two
programs, as I just tried things without Compiz activated, and also with
Metacity's own compositing turned on briefly.

It's also clear now that the issue is only much more _noticeable_ with
the New Wave border, rather than only involving it, as for example the
Clearlooks 2 border from art.gome.org has slight glitchiness in the
exact same place and same programs.

Apologies for initial lack of detail.

[Bug 622004] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not remember column width

2010-08-21 Thread John Kuang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox does not remember the column width that you set. Upon restart,
all the columns in it goes back to some default width. This is annoying
because I like to see the file location, which needs lots of space, so I
make most of the other columns narrower. But every time I restart
rhythmbox, I have to do this all over again.

This bug has been around for a long time. I'm using Rhythmbox 0.12.8 on

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Oded Arbel
@Alexey: Regarding your point (2), if I do a well enough job and release
an update to the PPA immediately after Ubuntu upstream releases an X
update, then users will only have to install 1 update, or at worst
they'd have 1 X update that requires them to logout and another X update
a day later that again requires a log out.

Regarding point (1) - Ubuntu's X11 distribution carries a lot of out of
stream patches (in 10.04 I count more then 50 additional patches) that
are either in process of being accepted upstream to x.org or
intermediate fixed waiting for another fix from upstream or even patches
that have no chance of being accepted upstream - and Ubuntu still caries
them and make sure they are up to date until they have a better solution
from X.org.

To get Ilya's patch into Ubuntu proper, it requires simply the
intervention of Ubuntu's "X-SWAT" team (
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat ) and that most likely will not
require a rewrite of XKB ;-) but I don't see any of these people list on
this bug report, and I'm not sure what is the procedure for addressing
the Ubuntu X team directly.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Alexey Kozlov
Oded,

thanks, I saw patched packages in your ppa and it's great. But my question was,
are there any ways to convince Ubuntu maintainers to include them in standard
repos?
(more precisely, to apply Ilya's patch to each new Xorg version and put this
patched version in standard repo).

I suppose, the reasons are clear: 1) new users get fixed version out-of-
the-box 2) no need to reinstall package from ppa after each Xorg update
(it's not just a question of 10.04/10.10, they also produce intermediate
bug-fix releases of Xorg, aren't they?)

But the whole thing seems to me a little hacky, that's why I ask about
procedures,

[Bug 621968] [NEW] New Wave Metacity border glitches

2010-08-21 Thread Tony Prynn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

While this is minor and not security-related etc it does concern one of
the few Linux themes that is practically finished and professional, i.e
a selling point.

The Metacity border for New Wave doesn't redraw properly when some
program windows are resized. Open a video in Movie Player or Gnome
Mplayer, go full screen and then undo that. The button for closing
windows is now misaligned in terms of outline and background. This
issue doesn't seem to occur with Firefox, Synaptic, Open Office etc.

I did have a go at altering some numbers in the relevant file but it's
over my head really.

Not a lot else I can say, and jargon in a dialogue about this would
throw me soon enough I'm sure, but presentation is important.

Thanks for your time.

It is quite possible to package the patch just for Ubuntu. I'm actually
maintaining such a build in my ppa at https://launchpad.net/~oded-
geek/+archive/xorg-patches.

All ubuntu devs should do is just pick up the diff from my ppa and apply
it as an update to 10.04 or 9.10. I will also deliver a patched XOrg for
10.10 shortly.

[Bug 621960] [NEW] crash with 20 virtual desktops, okay with 16

2010-08-21 Thread Samium Gromoff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

0. disable desktop effects (so that metacity is in charge, not compiz)
1. set the virtual desktop layout to be a grid of 4x5, total of 20 desktops,
2. save settings
3. try to switch to another desktop and see metacity die
4. log out
5. log in and see the whole gnome session being affected, to the point
of gnome-panel not starting, sometimes even nautilus not starting.
6. try to run nautilus, navigate to /usr/bin and launch
gnome-appearance-properties (or whatever)
7. re-enable desktop effects
8. set the virtual desktop layout to be a grid of 4x4, total of 16 desktops,
9. re-disable desktop effects
10. watch everything work like a charm

This bug appears to be fairly reproducible, as metacity breaks the same
in debian sid over NX as in local ubuntu with effects disabled.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Alexey Kozlov
First of all, thanks to all of you guys for your efforts and especially to Ilya
fot the patch.
I'm also affected and extremely annoyed by this bug. I've moved to Linux
recently and first mentioned, that Ctrl+Shift+T doesn't work in Firefox, and
then it turned out, that I can't use Eclipse properly since there are many
vital Ctrl+Shift shortcuts there.

And I'd like to be explicit here - IMO it's just a shame that such a
STUPID bug is still not fixed after SIX years (it was reported back in
2004!). OK, I understand, it's free software and nobody gets paid for
fixing bugs, but denying existing patch for some kind of puristic (not
to say religious) reasons - it seems to me, well, strange. How can we
claim that Ubuntu (in particular) is user-friendly and "for people" and
at the same time preserve such annoying bugs? (another example I've ran
into - mystical restriction to have max. of 4 KB layouts in XKB - but at
least it's not so common. btw excuse is the same - "the holy spec").

I'm not sure how it aligns with existing procedures, but wouldn't it be
possible to apply this patch during packaging Xorg for Ubuntu, so that
Xorg packages from standard repos (and their future updates) include
this fix?

After all, this bug really affects a lot of people, since there are
users outside US as well and almost all of them use layout switching.

[Bug 621902] [NEW] Gtk File Chooser ignores Intuos4 stylus input

2010-08-21 Thread klerfayt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

After selecting File -> Open in Gimp the "GtkFileChooser" window appears
in which no button reacts to stylus presses.

Prerequisites: graphics tablet must be configured correctly in Gimp
(every available Wacom device enabled and set to screen mode), otherwise
the bug does not appear because graphics tablet acts like simple mouse
cursor without pressure sensitivity.

My guess is that this is either Wacom drivers or Gtk bug.

[Bug 446942] [NEW] Brightness jumps on Vostro laptop

2010-08-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I usually lower the brightness of the laptop screen via key-combination, which
works fine (although there is no brightness information within gnome, like for
sound). I also set the system to automatically dim the display when the system
is idle.
This all basically works, but every now and then (usually only once some time
after a restart) the system jumps to full brightness after being idle for a
moment. I then have to manually bring the brightness down again.
Especially when working in a dark environment, these sudden birghtness changes
are quite nasty.
I do not know which package is responsible for this, so I'm assigning it to
meta-gnome2.

[Bug 621828] [NEW] No way to prevent standby/hibernation

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS AMD64
gnome-power-manager 2.30.0-0ubuntu1

Whenever the battery is full and I disconnect the power adapter, Ubuntu
wants me to standby or hibernate (depending on what is configured for
the action of "when battery is critically low"). If I click cancel on
the dialog, it preforms the action anyway. Using a standby/hibernation
preventing applet does not help. There is no option to turn off this
broken functionality.

Please Fix.

2010-08-21 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 620842] Re: laptop halts while it should go to sleep

2010-08-21 Thread Thomas Mayer
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Centrino (Pentium-M), 32bit. ATI
X300 graphics.

I updated my system from karmic to lucid. Using jaunty, it was very very
seldom that suspend to ram did not work. Same behaviour with lucid.
System was updated frequently.

Since I installed a kernel update from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24 in the
last days, I can't suspend to ram or hibernate reproducably. The system
halts before it sleeps or is switched off. I have to switch the system
off and on again. After rebooting, all network connections are switched
off and I have to reenable them using NetworkManager.

Using 2.6.32-23, I also can't suspend to ram or hibernate any more. A
few days ago, this worked fine in most cases. However sometimes I had
the same behaviour as now (about one in 10 times it did not suspend).

When I reboot my system using kernel 2.6.32-22, suspend to ram and
hibernate work fine. Reproducably.

[Bug 608026] Re: librsvg crashes with SIGSEGV when opening broken SVG file

2010-08-21 Thread Bruno Girin
I would suggest an SRU for Lucid to fix this bug there as well.

Impact of the bug:
Browsing a directory that contains an SVG file with empty style attributes
causes the application to crash. This happens with Nautilus or any application
that uses the GTK open file dialog (e.g. Firefox). So this can potentially
affect a large number of users.

How the bug has been addressed:
The patch is trivial and adds a check for NULL to the line in
rsvg_paint_server_parse that checks the validity of input parameters.

Detailed instruction on how to test this bug are in comment #12.

The potential for regression is very low as the only added code is a
sanity check of input parameters.

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

2010-08-21 Thread mlaverdiere
Is there someone from the Ubuntu Security Team /Ubuntu Review Team
listening to this report?

This bug, as I've experienced it at first (I'm the initial reporter) and
as it is experienced by other reporters here, can clearly crash down a
system, so it's not just some ordinary "risk less" bug. I've reported
this almost 4 years ago and at first, it was flagged as "high
importance" but since then, it has been reflagged as "low importance"
ans left unresolved even if there are regular reports showing that it is
still a serious threat ...

What does it take to get some attention on this bug?

Thanks.

(Please note that, for the time being, I'm not personally affected by
this bug, so my "activism" is only the result of an "irrepressible"
desire to have my preferred Linux distribution do the right thing with a
longstanding bugs representing a serious security/stability risk.)

Finally, the problem still occurs when the spam filters are disabled

decreases the occurence probability.

Ive got ubuntu lucid and gnome, I don't log off, I'm running simple

because I had a massive 650GB log file in my hard drive. I deleted the
file manually, but should I just disable logging until this is fixed?
