[Bug 622096] [NEW] computer "failed" to suspend with fn+f4 but suspends from menu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When two people are logged into my ThinkPad X61, sometimes Ubuntu refuses to suspend using the keystroke fn+f4, which is the normal way. The message is "Your computer failed to suspend. The failure was reported as: Cannot suspend" which by the way is also a rather pointless and uninformative message. However, if I use the mouse to select suspend from the menu in the upper right corner of the panel, it works fine. So the problem is obviously with the handling of the function key. [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
Let just me stress the importance of this bug once more, cause English-speaking users may not readily appreciate it. A large part of non-English people use at least two keyboard layouts: one for their native language and one for Latin script: web addresses, programming, whatever. A common way to switch layouts (wherever it comes from) is pressing Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift. If you use any of these in Ubuntu, you lose it for all shorcuts. Ctrl-shift arrows don't work, etc etc. We are talking about huge productivity impairment - the loss of keyboard shortcuts - in all apps systemwide, for whole countries. -- Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 622051] [NEW] Cannot change Artist Sort error, Rythmbox reports "Internal GStreamer error"
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Rhythmbox frequently fails to change the Artist Sort Order property. I think I've seen similar errors on other properties as well. This has a high probability of occurring when changing multiple tracks at once e.g. switching a property an entire album. However, even though it's more likely to succeed if done track-by-track, it still happens even then. I'm using Rhythmbox to maintain a collection of Ogg Vorbis audio files, and these properties, I believe, are kept within the actual music files (but that's a guess on my part). When the action fails, I get two message boxes from Rhythmbox, and as expected, the property does not get changed in the track file. *Error while saving song information* internal data stream error *Error while saving song information* Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug rhythmbox: Installed: 0.12.8-0ubuntu7 libgstreamer0.10-0: Installed: 0.10.28-1 I would expect to be able to change the property - there is no reason it should prevent me. [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
@Alexey: Regarding your point (2), if I do a well enough job and release an update to the PPA immediately after Ubuntu upstream releases an X update, then users will only have to install 1 update, or at worst they'd have 1 X update that requires them to logout and another X update a day later that again requires a log out. Regarding point (1) - Ubuntu's X11 distribution carries a lot of out of stream patches (in 10.04 I count more then 50 additional patches) that are either in process of being accepted upstream to x.org or intermediate fixed waiting for another fix from upstream or even patches that have no chance of being accepted upstream - and Ubuntu still caries them and make sure they are up to date until they have a better solution from X.org. To get Ilya's patch into Ubuntu proper, it requires simply the intervention of Ubuntu's "X-SWAT" team ( https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat ) and that most likely will not require a rewrite of XKB ;-) but I don't see any of these people list on this bug report, and I'm not sure what is the procedure for addressing the Ubuntu X team directly. -- Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Oded, thanks, I saw patched packages in your ppa and it's great. But my question was, are there any ways to convince Ubuntu maintainers to include them in standard repos? (more precisely, to apply Ilya's patch to each new Xorg version and put this patched version in standard repo). I suppose, the reasons are clear: 1) new users get fixed version out-of- the-box 2) no need to reinstall package from ppa after each Xorg update (it's not just a question of 10.04/10.10, they also produce intermediate bug-fix releases of Xorg, aren't they?) [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
First of all, thanks to all of you guys for your efforts and especially to Ilya fot the patch. I'm also affected and extremely annoyed by this bug. I've moved to Linux recently and first mentioned, that Ctrl+Shift+T doesn't work in Firefox, and then it turned out, that I can't use Eclipse properly since there are many vital Ctrl+Shift shortcuts there. And I'd like to be explicit here - IMO it's just a shame that such a STUPID bug is still not fixed after SIX years (it was reported back in 2004!). OK, I understand, it's free software and nobody gets paid for fixing bugs, but denying existing patch for some kind of puristic (not to say religious) reasons - it seems to me, well, strange. How can we claim that Ubuntu (in particular) is user-friendly and "for people" and at the same time preserve such annoying bugs? (another example I've ran into - mystical restriction to have max. of 4 KB layouts in XKB - but at least it's not so common. btw excuse is the same - "the holy spec"). I'm not sure how it aligns with existing procedures, but wouldn't it be possible to apply this patch during packaging Xorg for Ubuntu, so that Xorg packages from standard repos (and their future updates) include this fix? After all, this bug really affects a lot of people, since there are users outside US as well and almost all of them use layout switching. -- Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 446942] [NEW] Brightness jumps on Vostro laptop
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I usually lower the brightness of the laptop screen via key-combination, which works fine (although there is no brightness information within gnome, like for sound). I also set the system to automatically dim the display when the system is idle. This all basically works, but every now and then (usually only once some time after a restart) the system jumps to full brightness after being idle for a moment. I then have to manually bring the brightness down again. Especially when working in a dark environment, these sudden birghtness changes are quite nasty. I do not know which package is responsible for this, so I'm assigning it to meta-gnome2. [Bug 620842] Re: laptop halts while it should go to sleep
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Centrino (Pentium-M), 32bit. ATI X300 graphics. I updated my system from karmic to lucid. Using jaunty, it was very very seldom that suspend to ram did not work. Same behaviour with lucid. System was updated frequently. Since I installed a kernel update from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24 in the last days, I can't suspend to ram or hibernate reproducably. The system halts before it sleeps or is switched off. I have to switch the system off and on again. After rebooting, all network connections are switched off and I have to reenable them using NetworkManager. Using 2.6.32-23, I also can't suspend to ram or hibernate any more. A few days ago, this worked fine in most cases. However sometimes I had the same behaviour as now (about one in 10 times it did not suspend). When I reboot my system using kernel 2.6.32-22, suspend to ram and hibernate work fine. [Bug 608026] Re: librsvg crashes with SIGSEGV when opening broken SVG file
I would suggest an SRU for Lucid to fix this bug there as well. Impact of the bug: Browsing a directory that contains an SVG file with empty style attributes causes the application to crash. This happens with Nautilus or any application that uses the GTK open file dialog (e.g. Firefox). So this can potentially affect a large number of users. How the bug has been addressed: The patch is trivial and adds a check for NULL to the line in rsvg_paint_server_parse that checks the validity of input parameters. Detailed instruction on how to test this bug are in comment #12. The potential for regression is very low as the only added code is a sanity check of input parameters. -- librsvg crashes with SIGSEGV when opening broken SVG file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to librsvg in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Is there someone from the Ubuntu Security Team /Ubuntu Review Team listening to this report? What does it take to get some attention on this bug? Thanks. (Please note that, for the time being, I'm not personally affected by this bug, so my "activism" is only the result of an "irrepressible" desire to have my preferred Linux distribution do the right thing with a longstanding bugs representing a serious security/stability risk.) -- .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
