[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-13 Thread Bilal Akhtar
BTW, the maverick problem that I reported was actually affecting the
apache2 package (bug #626723), which was setting incorrect stty flags
for the tty* which would make X crash on pressing the enter key.

I just wanted to tell you people to see if it helps in some way.

[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-13 Thread Steve Langasek
has anyone reproduced this nvidia+gdm crash on maverick? Marking
incomplete for maverick pending confirmation.

** Description changed:

+ This bug has been repurposed based on the comments beginning at #15.
+ The original submitter's bug was a duplicate of bug #626723.

- After the system boots and the plymouth screen disappears and X starts up on
tty1 or tty2, if I press the enter key in a few minutes X shuts down and starts
again. In the session of X that comes up after this, the problem doesn't occur.
-
- The problem happens when gdm starts X and X crashes silently. gdm
- restarts X but X starts on tty1(2) as getty hasn't yet started and it
- isn't the first X start. When getty does start on tty1 it eventually
- interferes with X by setting ISIG on the tty.
-
- In the cases discussed here, the computer systems are very fast and gdm
- is starting X before the nvidia kernel module is ready to run.
-
- NOTE WELL--the original reporter had the problem that his system was starting
on tty7 and others were discussing tty1 starts here as well. At comment 30
- the problem was split with regard to tty1/tty7 starts and tty7 discussion
moved to #626723. See original description below for his original report.
+ When booting certain systems with fast disks, gdm will start up and
+ attempt to launch X before the nvidia kernel driver has fully
+ initialized. This results in gdm restarting X again, without the 'vt7'
+ argument, which may cause X's first-available-VT autoselection to pick a
+ VT between 1 and 6 because the getty jobs have not all yet started.
+ Ultimately this leads to X crashing when pressing certain keys (such as
+ Enter or '2') because the tty has been set into a mode by getty that X
+ is not prepared to handle.

2010-09-13 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the

udev: installed version 151-12, latest version: 151-12.1

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still

[Bug 637702] [NEW] Prompted to unlock keyring twice on log in

2010-09-13 Thread Jonathan Blackhall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

I recently upgraded from 10.04 (updated) to Maverick beta. After
upgrading I noticed I am now prompted to unlock my keyring twice on each
boot. I initially had auto-login enabled, but even if I disable that,
after I log in, I am still prompted twice for my keyring password. (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9838543 )

I was going to try purging and re-installing gnome-keyring (as suggested
on the forum post) but this will uninstall ubuntu-desktop and a lot of
other stuff, so I'd rather not if there's another way to fix this.

Please let me know what more information I can provide.

Re: [Bug 409706] Re: gnome-help excessive CPU usage

2010-09-13 Thread xor
My hardware specs have changed ever since I submited this bug report.
I now have a quad8300 intel cpu wich does't take the initial 25 seconds of
100% cpu usage, but it still takes around 7 seconds of 100% cpu usage.
And yes, it happends in Lucid.

[Bug 637691] [NEW] Nautilus ignores preview settings for images

2010-09-13 Thread dinky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm hoping someone can combine all of the nautilus bugs into one
thread... sounds like the root problem is the same, but all the postings
are different enough to warrant new threads. Anyway, nautilus is
ignoring the preview settings. Mine are set to preview images and other
files less than 10mb... sometimes it will preview a jpg or xcf file less
than this, sometimes greater, and sometimes not at all. Very sporadic
behaviour, even when refreshing the file browser window manually. Ta.

I disagree that this is a duplicate of those bugs which are about no r.
click -> PROPERTIES -> open with dialog

What's happening here is the default folder handler is being changed from
nautilus to whatever app is chosen from the r click -> open with other
application menu.
(which is and should remain a valid option.

Again a quick test.
right click on any folder -> open with other application, choose something.
Then when trying to open any dir. in Places the app previously chosen will open
instead of nautilus.

A 'safe' choice to test would be to choose firefox from the 'open with
other application menu', it won't get hung up parsing Home Folder or /

This does not affect opening a Desktop dir., nor will any app currently
in the r. click open with (if any)

IIRC the same issue occurred in 8.10 I believe (or eariler

Re: [Bug 545559] Re: Calculator acted funny. (Wasn't really paying attention, sorry.)

2010-09-13 Thread Njorl
Thank you for following up.

I am very sorry to have nothing to contribute.

I am an infrequent user of the calculator, and have seen no similar
occurrence. I have used both Karmic and Lucid for a few months, recently
switching to Lucid on both PCs (32 bit and 64 bit).

If there is not a clear clue to a bug, and are no significant reports of
similar incidents, I think my report should be forgotten. I suspect (but
I'm not certain when I moved my better PC to 64 bit), from it being an i386
release, that the error was encountered on my antiquated PC, which is a
little short of memory (246M - graphics usage). So, this might have been a
bad read from the swap file, or even just a memory fault, I suppose.
(Having worked in software development for a few years, I've learnt never
lightly to suggest a hardware error.)

Regards,
Adam

[Bug 637636] [NEW] Evolution asks if I want to mark as read current folder or current and all subfolders, even when there are no sub-folders

2010-09-13 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In previous versions of Evolution (e.g. in Lucid) when I'd mark an IMAP
folder as all read by right-clicking on the folder and selecting Mark as
Read, all that would happen is that the folder would be marked as read.

In the new version in Maverick, that behaviour has been replaced by an
unnecessary popup that asks me:

Also mark messages in subfolders?
Do you want to mark the messages as read in the current folder only, or in the
current folder as well as all subfolders?

The problem is that the folders I'm attempting to mark as read do not
have any subfolders.

My IMAP folder tree looks like this:

Inbox
Folder A
Folder B
Folder C
Folder D

and when I try to, for example, mark Folder D as All Read, I get this
popup, even though there is no subfolder under Folder D.

This is new as of Maverick, and is QUITE annoying and makes for an even
worse user experience than one normally gets with Evolution :(

[Bug 257190] Re: Setting status to 'Hidden' changes status to 'Busy' instead

2010-09-13 Thread frederik.nnaji
I have this problem in Maverick Beta, using Jabber only this time.
As long as Empathy doesn't inform me about the fact that it can't set my
desired state of Presence, the bug remains valid for Empathy, too.
Set to confirmed, for that reason.

[Bug 637542] Re: Gnome Theme icon image does not match expected layout.

2010-09-13 Thread MadDoggyBob
After much research I now understand that the window layout controls are
held in an XML file and the index.theme can be used to directly specify
the order of the window controls, but I cannot locate the icon /
descriptor that the user can click [within the Appearance Preferences -
Theme tab]
