[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]

Yet, we must sit here and "wish" that it would be fixed in Metacity for Ubuntu,
and evidently it's more important that a theme look good than be usable. It
needs to do both.

[Bug 621507] Re: glib-compile-schemas fails if override files refer to non-installed schemas

2010-10-19 Thread Robert Ancell
On further investigation, the bug appears to be in natty, not maverick.
The changes were not present in 2.27.0 so this bug is occurring again.
However the changes are in git master so it will be fixed again in
2.27.1.

[Bug 467169] Re: keyboard shortcuts UI issues; fails to set shortcut

2010-10-19 Thread Ian! D. Allen
These bugs still exist in Maverick.

10.10 Maverick: Open: System | Preferences | Keyboard Shortcuts.

Verfify that "Toggle maximization state | ALT+F10" works on a window.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F10 still toggles maximization.

At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+F10, but the shortcut
still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing.

Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10 and verify that it works.
Note that ALT-F10 now does nothing, as expected.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+MOD4+F10 still toggles maximization.

At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+MOD4+F10, but the shortcut
still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing.

Map "Toggle screen reader" to ALT+MOD4+F10.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10.
Now, ALT+MOD4+F10 does nothing, and no amount of playing around will
get it to do anything. I cannot assign ALT+MOD4+F10 to anything else.

It seems that any shortcut that you assign to "Toggle screen reader"
gets killed and made useless for anything else.

If you try to assign ALT+F11 or ALT+SHIFT+F11 to two functions, it will
correctly complain and tell you in the reassignment that one will be
disabled. But you can assign ALT+MOD4+F10 or ALT+MOD4+F11 to multiple
functions and it won't complain at all.  One of the functions might work;
the others will be ignored.

Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+F12 and verify it toggles.
Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace".
BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F12 still toggles maximization.
Map "Toggle shaded state" to ALT+F12.
BUG: ALT+F12 still toggles maximization, even though the UI says it
should toggle shaded state.
Map "Toggle maximization state" to anything other than ALT+F12.
Now ALT+F12 correctly toggles shaded state.

This is a mess.

[Bug 663119] Re: Unneeded items in System > Preferences

2010-10-19 Thread Vish
The settings and preferences is being given a makeover as part of GNOME 3, for
its new control center :
http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings

A library is available for developers wishing to implement new Settings
Panels. If anyone is an app maintainer, they should look into porting
the setting to the new panel api.

This is a major task and not a simple change, Hence marking as Invalid for
papercuts.
I dont expect any changes from an Ubuntu desktop discussion either. Some of the
items are there on purpose and intended, eg: Broadcast [Gwibber] preferences

[Bug 396015] Re: Invalid range for meters

2010-10-19 Thread Adam Weiss
I would venture the argument that a logarithmic scale would be the best
way to approach this. The autoadjusting linear scale looks pretty, but
does little to convey useful information as to actual utilization or
throughput and is such just plain confusing. I think most users are
probably interested in getting an idea as to the throughput of the
network or disk. Setting maximums specific to machine could make a
pretty graph, but it also involves hidden differences in scale from
machine to machine.

Plus, it would be dead easy to implement.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

I don't have the fortitude necessary to read all 205 comments before

in case that was not yet brought up by someone else. I constantly have
to reorder the icons on the right-hand side of the lower panel. It is
annoying, to say the least.

[Bug 350329] Re: gnome-session-properties dialog is far too small

2010-10-19 Thread poloshiao
We find out Bug#350329 just before we plan to post this bug report which
described almost the same situation as we met, so we post it here as an
reinforcing report. What we want to emphasize is that the status under
Chinese circumstance, maybe the same as Asian characters, is worse than
under English environment.

subject: to keep the windows of gnome-session-properties opened with an
optimal width when first clicked.

This bug report was posted originally by xenomorph0525 on 2010/10/16 23:00:22.
Its url is : http://www.ubuntu-tw.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18660
I help translate it into English and post here.

This report is related to the width of the windows of application gnome-
session-properties.

The 1st screenshot was taken from ubuntu 10.10 with English language as default.
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7261/1010e1.png
This is almost the same as that one sent by Jack Wasey in Comment 1 for bug
350329
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/350329/comments/1

The 2nd screenshot was taken from ubuntu 10.10 with Traditional Chinese
language as default.
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/8560/1010c1.png
Because the length of the Chinese sentence becomes so short that, Not like
under English environment, it becomes so narrow in width and one hardly take a
clear look of the items inside the windows without dragging the windows wider.
Sometimes it takes too much time to aim at the edge of the windows and drag it
to a comfortable size with the pointer of the mouse. It becomes very
unconvenient to all users with Traditional Chinese as default local language.

It should be wonderful if you are so kind to keep the windows opened
with a reasonable size when first initiated.

[Bug 663670] [NEW] empathy doesn't connect to msn - blocked connection

2010-10-19 Thread Jonatan Schroeder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I'm trying to find a bug that is related to this one, but none of the
options I found matches. When opening Empathy, and trying to connect to
my MSN accounts (I have two), Empathy keeps trying to connect, but
nothing happens. There is no error message (so this is not the classic
"Network error" bug that is solved by killing telepathy-butterfly), but
the connection is not finalized. Checking the debug window, these are
the last messages for butterfly:

[Bug 643910] Re: No effect when unchecking "Compress weekends in month view"

2010-10-19 Thread Russell Faull
This bug -- and others relating to calendar/task settings (such as day
begin/ends setting and colour settings) -- are not present in the
version of evolution at Jacob's ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~jacob/+archive/evo230). Many people used Jacob's
version in Lucid; being 2.30.3, it will also work in Maverick.

Download the packages to a temporary directory and do sudo dpkg -i *.deb
to 'downgrade'. In Synaptic, lock all evolution packages to prevent
updates overriding Jacob's ppa versions.

2010-10-19 Thread Mathieu Trudel
Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better! In
order for us to better help you, please answer the following questions:

- Can you have Evolution successfully get your mail with the server type set to
"IMAP+", rather than "IMAP"?
- In a terminal, if you type 'telnet imap.gmail.com imaps', do you get a
response along the lines of "Connected to gmail-imap.l.google.com.", or nothing
at all shows up?

Unless I use Nautilus Elementary (which I am using; will change this

[Bug 625670] Re: Not all desktop items are themed

2010-10-19 Thread RossH
Also i7. Affects me. I have the below system information. I know it
says Lucid, I downgraded from my backup after getting frustrated with
all of the problems that were happening. For me, it was actually only
partially applying my icons. I got the right icons on some areas of the
screen (Awoken theme), the ugly icons on some areas, and the hicolor
icons on some areas. I would log out and back in and the icons would
change. Changing the gtkrc and removing the proprietary driver helped
but only intermittently. Killing gnome-settings-daemon did not help.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2010-10-19 Thread NoOp
Successful login sound (Ubuntu theme) can be disabled (on Maverick 10.10) via:
rename desktop-login.ogg (/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo) to
desktop-login.ogg_bak
for the drums
rename system-ready.ogg to system-ready.ogg_bak

It's a regression & should be fixed - the GUI methods do not work.
IMO these sounds should simply be *disabled* by default. Leaving them enabled
is both irritating and seems to try to replicate (and aggrivate users) Windows
with these silly startup & login/logout sounds. Nothing more embarassing than
firing up your laptop in a college class, business meeting, etc., with sound
way up and having everyone turn around and look at you while Ubuntu runs
through it's silly drum roll & login theme. As mentioned in #87, perhaps I'll
just replace with the Windows sounds instead... at least that way I can claim
that I'm a poor Windows user that doesn't know how to turn off these sounds on
my Windows OS.

2010-10-19 Thread crawler
i came across this bug today in ubuntu 10.10 32-bit desktop edition and
can confirm. a quick and dirty workaround is to use the CompizConfig
Settings Manager (ccsm) to enable the Window Rules Plugin, then add
"name-eog" in the maximized dialogue.

This is obviously not the desired behavior, but for now it's much better
than the image falling off the bottom of the screen.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]

2010-10-19 Thread Alden
Scaine:
>I can't see anyone taking up this torch when a new Gnome and theme engine are
>just round the corner.

Perhaps.. Should we need to bring this bug to the attention of the Gnome
developers ASAP?

>To my mind, the importance (low) of this bug speaks volumes regarding
whether it will be fixed.

Anyone who thinks this bug is low should go without resizing their
windows for a few days. Maybe then they will still say it is low. But
then the next thing they should do is install of of those prank programs
that move your mouse a little bit right as you click. That is what this
feels like, a sad joke. I know I CAN grab the edge, but I just can't
 oh FINALLY It isn't "mission critical", but this is definitely
in my mind a medium priority fix.

 Trust me, if it hurts usability, and it does, people will be turned off
and give up Linux. This bug honestly did help push me to give up after
years and I have just returned in 10.10 hoping it was fixed. (YAY
Foursquare Flash!!!) I know I am not the only one. But I am one of the
few savvy enough to find Launchpad. But look around, and you will see
how many are affected by how many have in fact found launchpad . And
that is just... so sad. We can do better than this... can't we?

>Sorry if I sound jaded. In my head, this bug was buried a long time ago.
No need to apologize for your feelings. JFK said that "We have nothing to fear,
but fear itself." I say he is wrong, we have to and must fear losing our hope.
Without Richard Stallman's hope, even as a lone man with an idea, we wouldn't
be here discussing this right now. We have the blessing, to be (probably) a
part of what makes it right.

>I'd also like to suggest that it gets fixed in Ubuntu 10.04 as that is a
LTS release.
I want to say I agree, but it depends on how LTS is looked at. I say fix it for
anything you can, but "generally" new features aren't added, is my
understanding. However this is worthy imho if any are. You shouldn't have to be
held back because your computer works fine, you upgrade monitors or a mouse
because the old one died and your experience is hurt.

>Will the border be too large at lower resolutions?
  As the person below you said, testing will be needed. But I wonder how can
you honestly ask this question. Do you mean that between someone having too
much and another not having enough, you would rather someone without enough to
do without? Perhaps that is what this debate is about, and I completely missed
the boat.

 If an "easy" fix would be to just make the borders bigger, then we
would in fact be sacrificing usability for aesthetics. Aesthetics are
required for optimal usability, but this is just.. well unjust is what
it is. But at the same time, I don't want to ruin someone else's
experience. That wouldn't be good either. So really, we must figure this
out, because I don't know how to put it any other way except it is
SUPER_MEGA_FREAKING annoying and people have probably quit using
Ubuntu/Meta CIty more than we know because they can't even resize a
SUPER_MEGA_FREAKING window... Sorry to be so frank. But I sometimes
wonder if developers get it... Remember, users are people too! ; ) (We
just may do it differently.)

Just to recap, we can have different theme's with bigger borders, and that will
fix the issue, but it just looks non-pleasing. So us users want the aesthetics
and be able to have usability. I feel that looking to the way others do it may
be the best way, as I see no need to reinvent the wheel. A few pixels past the
border seems to be how it works in Windows, I do not know about Macs. Anyone
care to help test on different monitors on native resolution to see if there is
a pattern, or if it is just a set amount of pixels? I am thinking it may
"scale" with the resolution...

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2010-10-19 Thread Matt Perry
I don't think there is any confusion. On a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10
the double drums play when the GDM login screen appears. Once the user
logs in and goes to System->Administration->Login Screen->Play login

drums will continue to play when the login screen appears.

Re: [Bug 449176] Re: Duplicated external media entries (one mounted, one not)

2010-10-19 Thread Callan Davies
Hi Pedro,

I have recently done the dist-upgrade to maverick. I still have my two
SAMBA shares mounted. One of the shares still appears twice on my places
menu within Gnome. Of the two entries only one of them works ... The
other gives an error message about not being mounted. Please note the
second share works perfectly and only appears once.

I will send you a screen shot later today.

Callan

[Bug 609884] Re: Add "Time slider" panel for btrfs volumes

2010-10-19 Thread nam
There's a patch for Nautilus on the opensolaris/sun site.
http://src.opensolaris.org/source/xref/jds/spec-files/branches/gnome-2-24/patches/nautilus-13-zfs-snapshot.diff

All the things specific for ZFS will have to be changed of course, but
maybe this could be helpful, because one doesn't need to re-do the whole
user-interface thing?

Evolution started without --express can't be maximized. If i open

window. see screenshot attached.

I found out that it doesn't change the size if i maximize it, it stays

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2010-10-19 Thread Tormod Volden
I wonder if there is some confusion here to what exactly is the "login
sound". The double drums as the login screen appears is played (if at
all) by gdm and is configured in System->Administration->Login
Screen->Play login sound.

The sound tune played after you have successfully entered the password
(and technically logged in) and your gnome session is starting, is a
user setting in System->Preferences->Startup Applications->GNOME Login
Sound.

[Bug 440500] Re: formatting a FAT16 memstick to FAT results to mixed FAT16/FAT32

2010-10-19 Thread GeorgeVita
Hi Pedro Villavicencio,
thanks for keeping track on old and minor bugs. Yes the 'bug' still exists as
you can see at the attached screenshot. My test procedure was the same as in my
initial report. There is no tricks to test it, anybody can have the same result
by just formating a small USB memory stick. Especially the (!) marked point,
where TWO file browsers will appear, exists on every 'right-click formatting'.

After 12 months no other user marked this 'bug' as 'affecting me'
resulting to a de-facto solved-bug.

I personally use GParted instead of Disk Utility for all 'administrator
level' disk actions.

George

[Bug 660126] Re: gnome-settings-daemon - keybord layout glitch

2010-10-19 Thread Eloy Paris
Just killed gnome-settings-daemon -- its RSS was 1073912 kiloBytes, i.e.
a gig of memory!, and after restarting it it is now down to a more
reasonable 11524 kiloBytes.

There's something going on with the keyboard indicator, and it is my
understanding, based on http://blogs.gnome.org/sudaltsov/2010/08/20
/keyboard-indicator-in-ubuntu-10-10-disclaimer/ that this keyboard
indicator is Ubuntu-specific, so if that is accurate a fix will not come
from upstream Gnome.

[Bug 661724] Re: Printing certain documents yields characters scattered all over the page

2010-10-19 Thread Toki
I am also affected by this bug.
But contrary to the first posting, "print to file" has the same problem, and
even the print preview contains the scattered letters.
The result from my experiments with the aforementioned spring-reference.pdf
were:

- printing directly from evince has scattered letters
- printing to pdf has scattered letters
- selecting "print to file" with the pdf option yields scattered letters (in
the print preview and the file)

- printing via command line "lpr spring-reference.pdf" works!
- printing to ps works
- selecting "print to file" with the ps option works (in the print preview and
the file)
- other viewers (such as xpdf) work, because they simply use the "lpr" command

It also doesn't work with my personal pdf files, which were created by
pdflatex. So they probably don't contain obscure propietary pdf
extensions...

Thus I suspect a bug in the pdf processing of the gnome or evince
printing framework.

[Bug 614650] Re: gnome-panel places clock applet in wrong position

2010-10-19 Thread Alexander van Loon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 631664 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631664

I experience this bug as well, I prepared an intricate sequence of
screenshots to show it until I figured out I wasn’t the only one nor the
first one to report it. However, I did some more searching on Launchpad
and I came that the conclusion that the issue we experience is identical
to bug #631664, so I have taken the liberty to mark this bug as a
duplicate of that one. According to that bug compiz is the culprit, I’ve
verified that the problem goes away if I disable desktop effects (and
comes back if you enable them again), so I’m quite sure that it is
indeed the same issue. Could everyone commenting on this bug report
verify this for themselves, is placement of the applets (for me it’s
also the invest applet besides the clock applet) restored to the correct
position once desktop effects are disabled? I also noticed that this
problem only occurs if the panel containing the applet is located at the
bottom, if it is at the top it doesn’t happen, even with compiz enabled.
If anyone feels I was wrong in marking this bug as a duplicate, please
reverse my action.

2010-10-19 Thread Eloy Paris
I can confirm the memory leak described by simply in comment #6 -- I
have two keyboard layouts configured and just switching between them
(using left alt + caps lock in my case) one can see gnome-settings-
daemon's memory consumption increase and never go down.

I could not find a better bug for this problem but since at least one
user reported the memory leak in gnome-settings-daemon via this bug I
thought this was the closest bug that describes the issue.

[Bug 529696] Re: brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2010-10-19 Thread Tormod Volden
libao merely Suggests: libesd0. It is built with esd support (build-
depends on libesd0-dev). But I think it is supposed to survive even
without finding libesd.so. Really, brasero's detection based on parsing
console output needs to be fixed, or as Steve said long time ago,
disabled.

Hi Crucias, I’m a Ubuntu user who is affected by this problem as well. I
think our issues, and some other issues already reported, are in fact
identical. I’ve taken the liberty to mark this as a duplicate of bug
#631664, I’ve read the descriptions of the various bugs carefully, but
if I confused some bugs or if you think I’m wrong, please undo my
action. If I understand bug #631664 correctly, compiz is the culprit.
Maybe you could verify if your issue is related by testing to see if the
bug still occurs if you disable compiz (desktop effects)?

[Bug 661437] Re: Nautilus very slow opening larger folders

2010-10-19 Thread wilbur
This may be of low priority but it renders Nautilus virtually useless on
even a relatively fast computer with a reasonable amount of ram. Seems
to me that it should be worth fixing or that Nautilus could be replaced
by a more functional browser until this can be resolved. If there is a
fix, please post it.

[Bug 663455] [NEW] Incorrect text found in openssh-client/auth-file.c:542

2010-10-19 Thread David Lublink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

install the openssh-client source code, look at auth-file.c and see this
stanza :

int
key_perm_ok(int fd, const char *filename)
{
 struct stat st;

 if (fstat(fd, &st) < 0)
  return 0;
 /*
  * if a key owned by the user is accessed, then we check the
  * permissions of the file. if the key owned by a different user,
  * then we don't care.
  */
#ifdef HAVE_CYGWIN
 if (check_ntsec(filename))
#endif
 if ((st.st_uid == getuid()) && (st.st_mode & 077) != 0) {
  error("@@@");
  error("@ WARNING: UNPROTECTED PRIVATE KEY FILE!  @");
  error("@@@");
  error("Permissions 0%3.3o for '%s' are too open.",
  (u_int)st.st_mode & 0777, filename);
  error("It is recommended that your private key files are NOT
accessible by others.");
  error("This private key will be ignored.");
  return 0;
 }
 return 1;
}

The text "It is recommended that your private key files are NOT accessible by
others." should read "It is not permitted".

There is no work around to use a non-protected private key, therefore it
is incorrect to say recommend.

[Bug 493244] Re: discrepancy between cmdline and nautilus "compress" on a test folder

2010-10-19 Thread tomazzi
Well, I have this problem since... I even don't remember... and that's true -
only wine folders (prefixes) are affected. It was/is not very annoying but
rather strange. Today I've found some time to investigate this behaviour of
nautilus/file-roller and it looks like I've found the source of this problem.
I've checked permissions of (sub)folders and files and tested every particular
folder if it can be compressed with RightMouseClick -> and ONLY SOME OF THEM
causes file-roller to stop with "permission denied" message.

Direct cause is, that wine creates links to "dosdevices", "My documents"
"My movies" ... and so on, just like windoze. Usually Z: drive is linked
to /root and in $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/users// other critical
links are placed. That means if someone wants to compress whole
$WINEPREFIX directory, or just drive "C:" there is high chance to get
permissions violation. Solution is to check every link in every folder
and change it to safe location or just reove it. Doing so I was able to
compress whole WINEPREFIX without error.

Conclusion: File-Roller follows links during creating list of files, and can
cause permissions violation.
Suggested solution: Not only wine folders can contain links -> it would be nice
to have option like "Do not follow links" in FileRoller window.

[Bug 663438] Re: Core dumped Evolution -fallo de s egmentación-

2010-10-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
