[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]
>From the huge amount of comments here with people wanting a fix, and the >frequency that this bug would be encountered for the average user, I agree, it >should be higher. A simple task such as resizing a window should work better. Yet, we must sit here and "wish" that it would be fixed in Metacity for Ubuntu, and evidently it's more important that a theme look good than be usable. It needs to do both. -- Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 621507] Re: glib-compile-schemas fails if override files refer to non-installed schemas

[Bug 467169] Re: keyboard shortcuts UI issues; fails to set shortcut
These bugs still exist in Maverick. 10.10 Maverick: Open: System | Preferences | Keyboard Shortcuts. Verfify that "Toggle maximization state | ALT+F10" works on a window. Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace". BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F10 still toggles maximization. At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+F10, but the shortcut still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing. Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10 and verify that it works. Note that ALT-F10 now does nothing, as expected. Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace". BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+MOD4+F10 still toggles maximization. At this point, the UI shows no mapping for ALT+MOD4+F10, but the shortcut still maximizes windows. Disable has done nothing. Map "Toggle screen reader" to ALT+MOD4+F10. Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace". Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+MOD4+F10. Now, ALT+MOD4+F10 does nothing, and no amount of playing around will get it to do anything. I cannot assign ALT+MOD4+F10 to anything else. It seems that any shortcut that you assign to "Toggle screen reader" gets killed and made useless for anything else. If you try to assign ALT+F11 or ALT+SHIFT+F11 to two functions, it will correctly complain and tell you in the reassignment that one will be disabled. But you can assign ALT+MOD4+F10 or ALT+MOD4+F11 to multiple functions and it won't complain at all. One of the functions might work; the others will be ignored. Map "Toggle maximization state" to ALT+F12 and verify it toggles. Disable the keyboard shortcut with "Backspace". BUG: The UI shows "Disabled", but ALT+F12 still toggles maximization. Map "Toggle shaded state" to ALT+F12. BUG: ALT+F12 still toggles maximization, even though the UI says it should toggle shaded state. Map "Toggle maximization state" to anything other than ALT+F12. Now ALT+F12 correctly toggles shaded state. [Bug 663119] Re: Unneeded items in System > Preferences
The settings and preferences is being given a makeover as part of GNOME 3, for its new control center : http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings A library is available for developers wishing to implement new Settings Panels. If anyone is an app maintainer, they should look into porting the setting to the new panel api. This is a major task and not a simple change, Hence marking as Invalid for papercuts. [Bug 396015] Re: Invalid range for meters
I would venture the argument that a logarithmic scale would be the best way to approach this. The autoadjusting linear scale looks pretty, but does little to convey useful information as to actual utilization or throughput and is such just plain confusing. I think most users are probably interested in getting an idea as to the throughput of the network or disk. Setting maximums specific to machine could make a pretty graph, but it also involves hidden differences in scale from machine to machine. Also i7. Affects me. I have the below system information. I know it says Lucid, I downgraded from my backup after getting frustrated with all of the problems that were happening. [Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound
Successful login sound (Ubuntu theme) can be disabled (on Maverick 10.10) via: rename desktop-login.ogg (/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo) to desktop-login.ogg_bak for the drums rename system-ready.ogg to system-ready.ogg_bak It's a regression & should be fixed - the GUI methods do not work. IMO these sounds should simply be *disabled* by default. Leaving them enabled is both irritating and seems to try to replicate (and aggrivate users) Windows with these silly startup & login/logout sounds. Nothing more embarassing than firing up your laptop in a college class, business meeting, etc., with sound way up and having everyone turn around and look at you while Ubuntu runs through it's silly drum roll & login theme. As mentioned in #87, perhaps I'll just replace with the Windows sounds instead... at least that way I can claim that I'm a poor Windows user that doesn't know how to turn off these sounds on my Windows OS. -- No GUI to configure/disable login sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]
Scaine: >I can't see anyone taking up this torch when a new Gnome and theme engine are >just round the corner. Perhaps.. Should we need to bring this bug to the attention of the Gnome developers ASAP? >To my mind, the importance (low) of this bug speaks volumes regarding whether it will be fixed. Anyone who thinks this bug is low should go without resizing their windows for a few days. Maybe then they will still say it is low. But then the next thing they should do is install of of those prank programs that move your mouse a little bit right as you click. That is what this feels like, a sad joke. I know I CAN grab the edge, but I just can't oh FINALLY It isn't "mission critical", but this is definitely in my mind a medium priority fix. Trust me, if it hurts usability, and it does, people will be turned off and give up Linux. This bug honestly did help push me to give up after years and I have just returned in 10.10 hoping it was fixed. (YAY Foursquare Flash!!!) I know I am not the only one. But I am one of the few savvy enough to find Launchpad. But look around, and you will see how many are affected by how many have in fact found launchpad . And that is just... so sad. We can do better than this... can't we? >Sorry if I sound jaded. In my head, this bug was buried a long time ago. No need to apologize for your feelings. JFK said that "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself." I say he is wrong, we have to and must fear losing our hope. Without Richard Stallman's hope, even as a lone man with an idea, we wouldn't be here discussing this right now. We have the blessing, to be (probably) a part of what makes it right. >I'd also like to suggest that it gets fixed in Ubuntu 10.04 as that is a LTS release. I want to say I agree, but it depends on how LTS is looked at. I say fix it for anything you can, but "generally" new features aren't added, is my understanding. However this is worthy imho if any are. You shouldn't have to be held back because your computer works fine, you upgrade monitors or a mouse because the old one died and your experience is hurt. >Will the border be too large at lower resolutions? As the person below you said, testing will be needed. But I wonder how can you honestly ask this question. Do you mean that between someone having too much and another not having enough, you would rather someone without enough to do without? Perhaps that is what this debate is about, and I completely missed the boat. If an "easy" fix would be to just make the borders bigger, then we would in fact be sacrificing usability for aesthetics. Aesthetics are required for optimal usability, but this is just.. well unjust is what it is. But at the same time, I don't want to ruin someone else's experience. That wouldn't be good either. So really, we must figure this out, because I don't know how to put it any other way except it is SUPER_MEGA_FREAKING annoying and people have probably quit using Ubuntu/Meta CIty more than we know because they can't even resize a SUPER_MEGA_FREAKING window... Sorry to be so frank. But I sometimes wonder if developers get it... Remember, users are people too! ; ) (We just may do it differently.) Just to recap, we can have different theme's with bigger borders, and that will fix the issue, but it just looks non-pleasing. So us users want the aesthetics and be able to have usability. I feel that looking to the way others do it may be the best way, as I see no need to reinvent the wheel. A few pixels past the border seems to be how it works in Windows, I do not know about Macs. Anyone care to help test on different monitors on native resolution to see if there is a pattern, or if it is just a set amount of pixels? Hi Pedro Villavicencio, thanks for keeping track on old and minor bugs. Yes the 'bug' still exists as you can see at the attached screenshot. My test procedure was the same as in my initial report. There is no tricks to test it, anybody can have the same result by just formating a small USB memory stick. Just killed gnome-settings-daemon -- its RSS was 1073912 kiloBytes, i.e. a gig of memory!, and after restarting it it is now down to a more reasonable 11524 kiloBytes. There's something going on with the keyboard indicator, and it is my understanding, based on http://blogs.gnome.org/sudaltsov/2010/08/20 /keyboard-indicator-in-ubuntu-10-10-disclaimer/ that this keyboard indicator is Ubuntu-specific, so if that is accurate a fix will not come from upstream Gnome. -- gnome-settings-daemon - keybord layout glitch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 661724] Re: Printing certain documents yields characters scattered all over the page
I am also affected by this bug. But contrary to the first posting, "print to file" has the same problem, and even the print preview contains the scattered letters. The result from my experiments with the aforementioned spring-reference.pdf were: - printing directly from evince has scattered letters - printing to pdf has scattered letters - selecting "print to file" with the pdf option yields scattered letters (in the print preview and the file) - printing via command line "lpr spring-reference.pdf" works! - printing to ps works - selecting "print to file" with the ps option works (in the print preview and the file) - other viewers (such as xpdf) work, because they simply use the "lpr" command It also doesn't work with my personal pdf files, which were created by pdflatex. So they probably don't contain obscure propietary pdf extensions... [Bug 614650] Re: gnome-panel places clock applet in wrong position
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 631664 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631664 I experience this bug as well, I prepared an intricate sequence of screenshots to show it until I figured out I wasn’t the only one nor the first one to report it. However, I did some more searching on Launchpad and I came that the conclusion that the issue we experience is identical to bug #631664, so I have taken the liberty to mark this bug as a duplicate of that one. According to that bug compiz is the culprit, I’ve verified that the problem goes away if I disable desktop effects (and comes back if you enable them again), so I’m quite sure that it is indeed the same issue. Could everyone commenting on this bug report verify this for themselves, is placement of the applets (for me it’s also the invest applet besides the clock applet) restored to the correct position once desktop effects are disabled? I also noticed that this problem only occurs if the panel containing the applet is located at the bottom, if it is at the top it doesn’t happen, even with compiz enabled. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity install the openssh-client source code, look at auth-file.c and see this stanza : int key_perm_ok(int fd, const char *filename) { struct stat st; if (fstat(fd, &st) < 0) return 0; /* * if a key owned by the user is accessed, then we check the * permissions of the file. if the key owned by a different user, * then we don't care. */ #ifdef HAVE_CYGWIN if (check_ntsec(filename)) #endif if ((st.st_uid == getuid()) && (st.st_mode & 077) != 0) { error("@@@"); error("@ WARNING: UNPROTECTED PRIVATE KEY FILE! @"); error("@@@"); error("Permissions 0%3.3o for '%s' are too open.", (u_int)st.st_mode & 0777, filename); error("It is recommended that your private key files are NOT accessible by others."); error("This private key will be ignored."); return 0; } return 1; } The text "It is recommended that your private key files are NOT accessible by others." should read "It is not permitted". There is no work around to use a non-protected private key, therefore it is incorrect to say recommend. ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Incorrect text found in openssh-client/auth-file.c:542 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663455 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 493244] Re: discrepancy between cmdline and nautilus "compress" on a test folder
Well, I have this problem since... I even don't remember... and that's true - only wine folders (prefixes) are affected. It was/is not very annoying but rather strange. Today I've found some time to investigate this behaviour of nautilus/file-roller and it looks like I've found the source of this problem. I've checked permissions of (sub)folders and files and tested every particular folder if it can be compressed with RightMouseClick -> and ONLY SOME OF THEM causes file-roller to stop with "permission denied" message. Direct cause is, that wine creates links to "dosdevices", "My documents" "My movies" ... and so on, just like windoze. Usually Z: drive is linked to /root and in $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/users// other critical links are placed. That means if someone wants to compress whole $WINEPREFIX directory, or just drive "C:" there is high chance to get permissions violation. Solution is to check every link in every folder and change it to safe location or just reove it. Doing so I was able to compress whole WINEPREFIX without error. Conclusion: File-Roller follows links during creating list of files, and can cause permissions violation. Suggested solution: Not only wine folders can contain links -> it would be nice to have option like "Do not follow links" in FileRoller window. -- discrepancy between cmdline and nautilus "compress" on a test folder https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/493244 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 663438] Re: Core dumped Evolution -fallo de s egmentación-
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Core dumped Evolution -fallo de segmentación- https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663438 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 662337] Re: Very High CPU in pulseaudio
OK. I've re-installed gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio and I excuted: gst-launch playbin uri=file:///tmp/test.wav. The pulseuadio CPU rose to 95% and the rewind stuff came again. It is funny, if you want to use the pulseaudio alsa emulation you need to unistall gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio, changing in gstreamer-properties seems to do nothing. -- Very High CPU in pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/662337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gst-plugins-good0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
