[Bug 666555] Re: "users and groups" home directory change does not "take"
Following up, new system. Gave up on getting 10.04 video to work on my system (another story), switched to 10.10. Created a user named "bugta", user 1001, group 1001. Tried to use System / Administration / Users and Groups to change the home directory of bugta from /home to /lhome. lhome pre-existed, but did NOT have a directory in it called bugta. After prompting me, it created /lhome/bugta and copied the contents of /home/bugta into it. However it did not update /etc/passwd. To be explicit, the bugta line in /etc/passwd still had /home/bugta as the user's home directory. Repeated the test described in my 2010-11-14 post exactly, except for changing the user. The line below was copy pasted from what I typed: /usr/sbin/usermod -d /lhome/bugta -g 1001 -l bugta -s /bin/bash -u 1001 bugta >2011.01.02-1709.log 2>&1 /etc/passwd was modified to make the home directory /lhome/bugta. I believe that this represents a bug in 10.10. The System / Administration / users and groups dialog does not modify /etc/passwd even when the user being changed is not logged on. --- With regard to modifying the user who is logged on, I believe that *somehow* this should work. My need for it *is* driven by how I build my systems, which will explain below, but that is immaterial and I do not want to cloud my message. It suggest the following: The issue would arise any time userid, groupid, home directory is changed for an active user. If the user is *not* in the user trying to make the change, I suggest that the program refuse to make the change, and specify that the user must log off and all processes running under that user ID must exit before the change can be made. Note that in obscure cases that this may still not be sufficient, as any process could have information about the target user ID in private memory. The only 100% safe thing to do is to reboot. The user could be warned and given a choice - log off or reboot. If the user is the one running "Users and Groups", I suggest that a dialog offer the choices of aborting the change, or continuing with a unavoidable and immediate system restart without further warning afterward to ensure consistency for running processes related to that user ID (To avoid giving the user the opportunity to ctrl-alt-backspace for example out of the reboot). I do not like the idea of having to reboot the system for a change, but this is a very unusual situation. --- Why I need this (And a little bit of a soap box): In general, my user home directories are on a file server. This is /home, created by an auto mount map or direct nfs mount. I create the accounts on each machine to avoid the complexity of LDAP at the cost of 15 minutes work when I rebuild. The account created during installation I use as a local administrator account (naming it administ), which is functional and whole even if my network or the file server with the home directories is non-functional. But Ubuntu gives me no choice but to create it in /home! So I let it create it, then need to move it to *somewhere else* before I can make /home refer to my server and activate my other accounts. I choose /lhome (local home). I use the Ubuntu System / administration / users and groups dialog to change the home directory (This *is* the mainstream Ubuntu mechanism). I guess I *could* create another administrator account, then change it from there, then delete the second account. But I feel that somehow the system should deal with this situation, not block out a valid change. Regarding using the dialog vs. the command line stuff, I "grew up" editing UNIX configuration files such as /etc/passwd and /etc/group, creating home directories with mkdir. "man" explained the actions of each command, and each configuration file. Life was simple and transparent. Today a plethora of dialog boxes provide magical access to who-knows-what underlying mechanisms, and maintaining coherence of who- knows-what interdependencies. I am afraid to change anything the easy way, and instead use the provided dialogs. I fear that Linux is moving toward Windows, where everything is opaque and based on hidden magic, vs. UNIX where everything was transparent and intuitive to the most casual observer. Because the dialogs are not well documented as to what they do, one cannot manage the system the old way because you have no way of knowing what to do any more. Hiding the underlying mechanisms is a good architectural principle, but I would prefer the simple transparent system with those clearly identified as the system interfaces, perhaps with nice helpful graphical applications whose stated role is to manipulate those system interfaces in well defined and documented (transparent) ways to make the system nice for those who cannot type. I like to be in control and secure that I can make the system work. Otherwise I might as well buy Windows, where everything is easy, confusing, seems to encounter unanticipated situations and malfunctions

[Bug 692145] Re: Need to enter two times my pass word
So, I discover what wrong now, I don't know if it's normal or not? If you use some services like "Ubuntu one" or other through Gwibber, your pass word is record inside a seahorse folder and the key word for this is generally the same as your Ubuntu login. If you change your Ubuntu login, several troubles appears, because you don't use the same pass word (but not all time, every login)... When you log in Ubuntu trought GDM after your are login a new window appears equaly and ask to you to enter your "trousseau of key connexion" (connect you with different servivies you use who the pass word are stocked inside seahorse). And some other trouble appears aqually in your Gnome environment. The color of your task bar (up and down) change for a grey color and your icons change too. Nautilus environement is changed equally??? Now, I use the same pass word and this problem is gone. But I think there is a trouble with the encrytion system... Because now I test an other software who use the encryption: "Crytpkeeper", is feel nice ans usefull. In fact, of all the windows I have open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is that I get a lot of "misses" when I try to drag a window border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an "invisible" region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System > Preferences > Windows dialog (although the default thickness should still be increased considerably). [Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus
what you have done is not correct. you don't need to create new documents. I've modified the gconf key like you made, after that: - I opened a Nautlus window in list mode and the files were ordered in reverse sort order. - that was not ok for me, I closed the window and restored the gconf key - I reopened the same window and the list was back to normal sort order - after a bit of time casually I opened gedit and looking for a file to edit I noticed that the browser window was in reverse sort order, I checked other Nautilus window but they were ok, but all the other browser window, in all the programs that allow to surf the file system, were in reverse sort order. What you say about new and old folders is not correct, the gconf option apply to old folders as well. Trying to reproduce the bug on my laptop I was not able to obtain exactly the same behaviour, there the gedit browser window maintain the normal order, but the bin folder I was using to check the changes has been changed in reverse order and now is not restored to the normal order. that smell like a brother of another bug in nautilus windows I reported before, bug # 435343 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696505 Title: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs
rsync isn't trying to include .gvfs even with the -x option. It along with find(1), etc., has to be able to do some things with .gvfs to even work out it is the mount point of another filesystem and shouldn't be descended into further. [Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus
I've tried to reproduce this bug: gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> list_view -> I've checked default_sort_in_reverse_order I've create two new documents "a" and "b" and insert them in a new folder. I've entered the folder and found first "b" and after "a". I unchecked default_sort_in_reverse_order, created a new subfolder, moved "a" and "b" to the new subfolder, entered it and found them in the correct order (first "a" and second "b"). So I wasn't able to reproduce this bug on a x86_64 2.6.32-27.49 with nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1 Are you aware that this option only applies to new folders (old folders remember their previous order and show that order instead of the default)? [Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs
We are now on 10.10 Maverick and this bug still exists. I can't believe that! I have over 20 years experience in unix systems, and believe me, if this bug is meant "by design", than this design is broken! There should be nothing that root can't access on my own machine. There are some filesystems for accessing remote file systems (e.g. nfs), where you can define root acces as "nobody". This is for security reasons, because you don't always have control over user rigths on remote systems. But inside my own system, root should have access to everything. And even if I have mounted filesystems where my root account has nobodys rights, then it should be possible to exclude them with rsyncs -x option (don't cross filesystem boundaries). This seems to be a second bug. Why does rsync try to include .gvfs with the -x option? [Bug 696455] Re: GTK/gnome applications/desktop loses the GTK theme sometime
Hmm, I found this in .xsession-erros file: ** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'. (Details: serial 1365 error_code 8 request_code 3 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Can it cause the problem? Is it a gnome-setting-daemon bug then? ** Package changed: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu) => gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696455 Title: GTK/gnome applications/desktop loses the GTK theme sometime -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 696455] [NEW] GTK/gnome applications/desktop loses the GTK theme sometime
Public bug reported: First of all, I am sorry that I may send this bug report against the wrong package. With Ubuntu 10.10 (actually on two different machines: one of them is a notebook with fresh install, the other is upgraded since the "stone age" but it is also a 10.10 32 bit version now) sometimes I have the experience that gtk/gnome apps loses the theme. It means that things appears in a default "themeless" GTK way. On the notebook (the new install) let's say 2 startups from 10 (in average) results the themeless appearance after logging in (including the gnome panel). On the other machine, if some application which used the panel exists (or killed) there is a chance that theme switches back to the "themeless" state without my will. In both cases, if I start application "gnome- appearance-properties", everything returns into the correct themed appearance even without doing anything in gnome-appearance-properties just starting it, and CTRL-C before its window appears (I run it from terminal window) helps. I have no idea what can cause this really annoying bug. Thanks in advance, if you have any advice to avoid this. [Bug 532607] Re: rhythmbox-metadata assert failure: *** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/rhythmbox/rhythmbox-metadata: double free or corruption (fasttop): 0xb6d004c0 ***
I have a similair problem. Placed music in folder home/me/Music/Alagna/Viva. "(invalid encoding)" was added automatically to the name of some of the unarchived files. When trying to open with right click->Open with Rhythmbox, it didn't open the "invalid encoding" files (it played the files which weren't added "invalid encoding"). After importing, Rhythmbox played all files. Rhythmbox imports the music, but as unknown artist, unknown album. Tried to select all songs in album and change artist and album. Gives errors for every file and doesn't change artist and album name. Tried for each mp3 separately and it still gave error, but it changed artist/album name. Tried to change the artist name of two(at the same time) of the mp3s which didn't have the "invalid encoding" appended at their names. It changed the artist/album names to "unknown". It seems the problem is not that artist/album names are not changed, It seems the problem is they ARE CHANGED TO "unknown". Tried to do the same thing with another bunch of mp3s and sometimes it showed all of the following: "Error while saving song information Internal Data stream error" "Error while saving song information Internal GStreamer problem,; file a bug" "Error while saving song information Internal Data stream error" and it changed the artist/album just for some of the files. For the same bunch of mp3s, it sometimes workes for all the mp3s, sometimes just for some of them. My suggestion would be to make Rhythmbox automatically know Folder1 is artist name and Folder2 is album name when finds a file in /home/me/Music/Folder1/Folder2. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532607 Title: rhythmbox-metadata assert failure: *** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/rhythmbox/rhythmbox-metadata: double free or corruption (fasttop): 0xb6d004c0 *** -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
