[Bug 260918]
I guess it is a long slow process to get USB devices like webcams to work in Linux. Still the cam does work with Cheese and native Skype. Love to know if anyone is working on getting webcams to work with iSpQ or icuii. iSpQ is from Nanocorp http://www.ispq.com/downloads and icuii is from cybration http://www.ispq.com/downloads. I have accounts with both so can help trying to enter my username and password in either one if that's any help. Thanks for trying. Appreciate your efforts. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Fedora fc 14 on separate HDs. Use the latest wine version in both. [Bug 697280] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in ev_pixbuf_cache_set_selection_list()
Charlie: No, I can't reliably reproduce this, and I can't give clear information on what I was doing to cause the crash. There were several opened pdf files (like the one here: http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/c142_20.html I don't know exactly which, directly opened from Firefox) and when I switched back to evince from another application, evince crashed. That might confirm what Chrescht guesses about the automatic refreshing of displayed pdf files. [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]
MikeLoco14: Yes, corner drag functionality is already in natty (which will likely become Ubuntu 11.04 in April 2011). As the blog post from 9 October 2010 notes: "The credit for this work goes to Cody Russell". Cody is an Ubuntu Member, see Cody's Launchpad page: https://launchpad.net/~bratsche (Cody Russell) Hopefully this serves to demonstrate that window resizing *is* being actively improved! (I appreciate that there has been a couple of years where the situation has regressed as a result of theme changes). I don't currently know how much of the final solution will be able to be backported to previous Ubuntu versions (theme changes will be easier than code changes), but I'm sure others will investigate what is possible work; for example see the note at the top of this bug report: "Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa: https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk " -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 Title: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome] -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]
I thought I was the only one who really had a problem with this. But then I thought that wouldn't make sense, and that probably nobody had filed a bug. So I searched and found this. And I'm shocked this HUGE bug has been filed here for around 3 years yet it's low priority. How can this be low priority if it affects _every_ window? And this is ubuntu, not some distro targeting command-line hackers. I'm sorry I can't contribute any code to fix it, but I think you should reconsider some of your priorities. Now, from looking at http://blogs.fedoraproject.org/wp/mclasen/2010/10/09/getting-a-grip/, GTK+3 will include this (hopefully this is mainstream and not only Fedora), but unless GTK+3 is included in natty (AFAIK it is, correct me if I'm wrong. and I hope I'm not… also, this leaves lucid out in the cold, and the latest LTS shouldn't be left suffering this terrible bug) and all existing GTK+2 applications use GTK+3 when ran on a system with GTK+3 (which I doubt, considering how horrendus GTK+1 apps look) the outcome won't be pretty at all... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 Title: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome] -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 693337] Re: Menus for choosing language should have one option per available translation
Thanks Martin and Arne for your valuable feedback! I agree that also /usr/share/locale should be taken into consideration, so I modified the l-s branch accordingly and wrote a new Perl script (lang-list2.pl). There is also GDM, and since I don't know C, I'm not able to make the equivalent changes to the C code - somebody else needs to do that, unless it can't wait till release 13.10 or something... To me it looks like it's gui/simple-greeter/gdm-languages.c that needs to be patched. One possibility, that would minimize the necessary changes to existing GDM files, is that I write a script, that takes a list of available locales as arguments and outputs the desired list of language options. Martin, I guess it's up to you. Even if Perl isn't an option, e.g. due to efficiency concerns, maybe a shell script? A few comments on your comments: On 2011-01-06 17:32, Arne Goetje wrote: > On 01/06/2011 07:55 PM, Martin Pitt wrote: >> > > What about /usr/share/locale/ ? Therefor always put ll_CC codes first in the > LANGUAGE variable string, followed by the country-less fallback, i.e. > de_DE:de ! Is the country-less fallback in LANGUAGE really necessary? My tests indicate that gettext automatically goes to 'll' if it doesn't find a translation in 'll_CC'. Do you know of a reproducable use case that shows something else? (It should be noted that it doesn't work the other way around; see bug 700213.) This is what happens in the code I'm proposing: * If there are only translations under 'll' for a language, the list of language options only includes 'll'. Personally I find it neater to not unnecessarily include country specific items. * If there are translations under 'll_CC' for a language, the list of language options does not include 'll' (with the exception of 'en'). This is because of the gettext bug I mentioned. > There is code for this in l-s. I have seen makeEnvString() in LocaleInfo.py, which is used to generate a LANGUAGE list in the special case when l-s doesn't find a stored LANGUAGE value. For the above reason I do at least not find it motivated to extend the use of that function. Please feel free to prove me wrong. ;-) >>> * As regards languages with more than one translation: When the >>> country is not specified, does it matter which of the locales >>> that is assigned to the LC_MESSAGES environment variable? >> >> No, it doesn't for messages. Actually, in the l-s branch I still propose that we introduce the possibility to pick the main or origin country; at first hand because it feels better and may prevent user bewilderment, but also because it would have prevented this special case surprise: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2010-December/002722.html >> I guess for the actual implementation in l-s and gdm we don't need >> to parse /usr/share/xml/iso-codes/, as these already have the >> translated names of the locales? That way we would add these items to the lists of language options, despite the fact that no corresponding locales are available: - e...@boldquot - e...@quot - e...@shaw - en...@piglatin So far I have assumed that that is not what you intended, so the latest Perl script generates the union of /usr/share/langpack-locale and /usr/share/locale as a first step, and then it determines the list of language options as the intersection of the just mentioned union and 'locale -a'. >> Just keep in mind that each time a universe package gets installed >> or removed, the list of available languages may change then. > > Right, that's the downside with this approach. Unusual or not, an example of it occurs on my box. I installed the CD burner GnomeBaker a couple of months ago, and it brought translations to 'de_DE', 'de_AT' and 'de_CH'. Hence the latest Perl script outputs those three German options instead of just 'de'. OTOH, is it really a downside? If I had been an Austrian, I might well have preferred Austrian German when available. I for one do not share the view expressed at https://blueprints.launchpad.net/language-selector/+

[Bug 700834] [NEW] Left-side Fan1 Stays off
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal Release: 11.04 Package: Natty Narwhal The computer is a MacBook Pro 5,3. The issue concerns the operation of the left side Fan identified as Fan1. The system detects 2 fans, and most of the other sensors available in the system, and while there are many other sensors not operating a they should according to the results from sensors, sensors-detect, etc, the main problem is that the system will only control (manual or auto does not matter as I tried both) fan2. Fan1 will on a rare occasion turn on and rev to 143rpm and then turn off immediately, otherwise it never comes on. I have installed a script which allows manual control of fan speed with script: (in terminal) gksu bash ~/fan_speed(1-3) and the file associated simply provides an short script: echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_manual echo 3500 > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_output echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan2_manual echo 3500 > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan2_output echo "Setting Fans Speed to 3500RPM!" [Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks
I haven't had much need for connecting to shared locations since my last post, but that has changed. Again, I found myself fighting this problem and it was proving to be a real bugger trying to connect to local shares. However, I did find the following combination to work very well for me: 1. In etc/smba/smb.conf uncomment this line and make it read: name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host Notice "host" is last in the order. I have switched from Google DNS to OpenDNS and I needed this to help resolve behind my firewall. 2. In etc/smba/smb.conf make this line read with the name of your workgroup: workgroup = 3. In Firestarter (firewall config tool): Edit > Preferences > Advanced Options un-check "Block broadcasts from external network" This was key in my case. After making changes #1 & 2 above I was still have a difficult time connecting to shared locations. So then in Firestarter I added a rule to the firewall to open Samba port ranges of 137-139 and 445 and gave it my internal network range, but that didn't seem to make any difference and have since removed that rule . Only when I unchecked "Block broadcasts from external network" was I able to easily connect to local shares (initial connection may take 2 attempts sometimes). Note: Firestarter defaults to "Block broadcasts from external network" as checked and "Block broadcasts from internal network" as un-checked. So I now have both of these un-checked. Is this a big security risk outside of my home network? I don't know if there is a bug with the firewall, Firestarter or I'm just flat missing something. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/356022 Title: unable to mount or browse samba networks -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 700739] Re: Having to click once to close an open Gnome menu is confusing for new users
I can see how this would be problematic for some users. When the user clicks on a menu and moves the cursor to an adjacent menu, focus will automatically switch to the new menu. However, by that reasoning, the user would expect the menu to close completely if they move the cursor away from it completely, which it doesn't. This isn't a trivial fix given that this functionality is deeply rooted within the Ubuntu GUI. [Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"
I remember working through this 4 years ago when I was focused more on the power management. At the time the aim was settling on Suspend/Resume and Hibernate/Resume. Hibernate is generally fine because in English people have often heard about fluffy polar bears in winter. Suspend was better-than-the-other- options. [Bug 700749] Re: Disk Utility (palimpsest) doesn't resize itself anymore, requiring users to do so to use it
I've removed the middle two paragraphs that referred to a problem with the impact zone for resizing windows as a bug report should be restricted to a single issue, and the difficulty in resizing windows is already a known bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/160311?comments=all). ** Also affects: gnome-disk-utility (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #639088 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639088 ** Also affects: gnome-disk-utility via https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639088 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Description changed: The Disk Utility program (palimpsest) used to resize itself after selecting a drive. Now, when you select a drive, the window is ALWAYS too small, REQUIRING the user to make it bigger or to scroll the scroll bars to see all the options in the right panel. - - This brings me to the next failing: the boarders are almost impossible - to click on now, especially on high-resolution desktops, as you have to - position your mouse over a single pixel. There is no "grab" section in - the bottom right of the window either like there are in Nautilus and - Firefox windows, making it not only annoying to use, but also - inconsistent with the rest of the desktop. - - I know the boarder problem effects other programs too of course, but - this issue is especially apparent with Disk Utility due to it being one - of the default programs that users may use which ALWAYS requires - resizing or scrolling of the scroll bars. If it was simply a matter of - scrolling down, which you can easily to with the mouse wheel, it may not - be so bad either, but it requires horizontal scrolling as well. One solution to this issue would be to bring back the behaviour of the old program which auto-resized itself. While I can understand windows resizing themselves being a slightly annoying feature, this way it is now is much more so, and if you wanted to solve both issues you could simply make the default window size of Disk Utility be big enough to show the right panel without scrollbars after a drive is selected, or to reduce the size of things in the right panel so that it will fit in the existing default window size. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: New => Confirmed ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-disk-utility in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700749 Title: Disk Utility (palimpsest) doesn't resize itself anymore, requiring users to do so to use it -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
