[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup

2011-01-15 Thread scoopex
From usability view you should really configure empathy as default to be
a startup application.

Non technical users do not know anything about commandline switches.

If a user really does not need this it can be removed from startup
applications.

From a usability point of view activation/deactivation of default startup
should be located in
empathy menu.

[Bug 702858] Re: [Natty] Nautilus_2.32.2.1-0ubuntu4 crashes

2011-01-15 Thread Harry
OK Didier, here is how you can reproduce this bug.
I did more searching on it.

In fact Nautilus_2.32.2.1-0ubuntu4 does not crash when I move mouse cursor on
it.
It crashes when I move my mouse cursor on my side panel (which set to autohide)
and at the same time icons on the desktop flicker.
If I remove the autohide option from the panel, Nautilus does not crash anymore
nor do the icons flicker.

So it is this autohide function of a panel that crashes Nautilus, every
time mouse cursor wakes the panel.

[Bug 697974] Re: time-admin crashed with SIGSEGV in e_map_point_get_location()

2011-01-15 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The problem isn't that I fear people won't do the work, as I know
packaging will happen anyway. It's just that the way Ubuntu devs
consider patching is plain wrong: there's generally no hurry pushing a
fix to the development release, so downstream patching only generates
useless work. I wish Ubuntu would turn to upstream when they have a
patch before even thinking of applying it: very often, feedback and
discussion can help understanding the best solution. Plus, if I hadn't
been around, would upstream have even heard of this patch one day? This
is not against you at all, it's more a general state of mind that I
consider slightly counter-productive.

I've tried to reproduce this with Compiz, and I can't. Weird. If under
Compiz we're getting leave-notify-event signals, something is really
wrong. Did you notice when these signals are sent? When simply moving
the pointer, when clicking... ?

[Bug 703273] [NEW] Rhythmbox cannot properly play musepack (mpc) files

2011-01-15 Thread Miłosz Kosobucki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have many songs in my music collection in Musepack format. This format
makes rhythmbox behave strangely:

- I can't hear the song playing after pausing mpc file (the song progress
indicator stays freezed)
- I can't hear the song playing after skipping to some point in mpc file (as
above the song progress indicator stays freezed)
- After mpc song finishes, rhythmbox cannot play another song (regardless of
format) until restarted.

I suppose that it can have something to do with gstreamer. However I
don't know how to properly debug gstreamer (rhythmbox -d) didn't show
anything interesting.

Rhythmbox behaves like that on basically every mpc song I have. There is
one such example in attachment.

[Bug 703279] [NEW] Evolution E-Mail has wrong description in help to set default-signature

Public bug reported:

Evolution-Help says that you can set default-signature with the
signature-editor. This would be the best way, but there is no button or

This option is very hard to find (but also mentioned in Evolution-Help).

[Bug 703273] Re: Rhythmbox cannot properly play musepack (mpc) files

2011-01-15 Thread Miłosz Kosobucki
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have many songs in my music collection in Musepack format. This format
  makes rhythmbox behave strangely:

  - I can't hear the song playing after pausing mpc file (the song progress
indicator stays freezed)
  - I can't hear the song playing after skipping to some point in mpc file (as
above the song progress indicator stays freezed)
  - After mpc song finishes, rhythmbox cannot play another song (regardless of
format) until restarted.

I suppose that it can have something to do with gstreamer. However I
- don't know how to properly debug gstreamer (rhythmbox -d) didn't show
+ don't know how to properly debug gstreamer, and rhythmbox -d didn't show
  anything interesting.

Rhythmbox behaves like that on basically every mpc song I have. There is
  one such example in attachment.

[Bug 667071] Re: archive manager

2011-01-15 Thread Jack Brown
How to replicate this bug.
It appears to me that the problem is created when right clicking on a folder
and choosing /Open With/Other application/ when the choice you want is not in
the default list. In Ubuntu 10.10 the check-box Remember this application for
folder files is checked off by default. If you don't notice this and choose
VLC or some other app then for ever after that is what you will launch when you
click /Places/Home Folder/

Now I just checked Ubuntu 10.04 and the situation is the same there
except that even with the Remember this application for folder files
checked, the choice of VLC does not stick as it does in Ubuntu 10.10.

So it appears that that Ubuntu before 10.10 is smart enough to know that
you don't want to use VLC to open folders forever after.

PS replace VLC with whatever other application you have got pinned to
the /Places/Home Folder/

PPS Comment 10 fixed this problem for me too.

2011-01-15 Thread Samantha (aka Sam)
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

  Steps to reproduce.
Right click on panel - add to panel - add a starter 'as copy from the
applications menu'.
  e.g. Firefox, Gedit
+ Then change the symbol of the launcher.
+ Doesn't matter if from /usr/share/icons or from ~/.icons.
Afterwards you'll find .desktop file in ~/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers
with permission 755.
While all other .desktop files in ~/.config/autostart or
~/.local/share/applications are 644.

If you change the .desktop file in ~/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers
to 644, e.g. by removing the executive bit, applications still run as
  usual.

- Expected:
- Adding a launcher to panel shouldn't add an executive bit automatically if it
isn't necessary and as long as a user doesn't actively choose so.

[Bug 703342] [NEW] Problem creating ISO fron CD

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

When trying to create an ISO image of a CD, brasero throws the following
error:

Cdrdao package is available in the repositories, but when you try to install

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm using a laptop with external monitor and I have a problem with Close Lid
event. I have external monitor running and laptop screen off in monitor
settings in gnome. So, usually I press power button on laptop and close the lid
while BIOS is being loaded, my eternal monitor switches on and everything is
alright. Then, if for some reason I open the lid of laptop, Everything is still
ok - I have my external monitor running, and laptop screen off. Now, when I
close the lid of my laptop, the external monitor is being switched off, which

libbrasero-media1_2.32.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
brasero-cdrkit_2.32.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

P.S. This bug have two effects:
1. When you trying to create an iso image brasero creates an image with length

[Bug 695260] Re: gnome-panel help cannot be displayed

2011-01-15 Thread Joanmarie
I'd be curious to know if you can get any gnome application help to
display in Natty using the application's means (push buttons, menu
items, pressing F1) for doing so. So far I've tried:

* orca (aka gnome-orca)
* gnome-terminal
* rhythmbox
* evolution

In all cases it fails: gio.Error: The specified location is not
supported

[Bug 384505] Re: More persistent calendar reminders

2011-01-15 Thread Jacques-Louis KREISS
I think the behavior changed in Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10. Before that, the
default was to get a full notification. Now we only see a red icon in
the tray. I was used to the previous behaviour and found it more
appropriate for real notifications. I manually returned to the previous
behaviour, unselecting the
/apps/evolution/calendar/notify/notify_with_tray key with gconf-editor.

Would be nice to include in usability tests for future releases.

[Bug 696766] Re: Eog is unable to display multipage TIFF but is the default viewer for TIFF files

2011-01-15 Thread neuromancer
I accept the decision of the debian developer to not implement this feature in
EOG because multipage tiff support is already implemented in EVINCE, but I
disagree with you for closing this bug.
This bug is related to Ubuntu and incorrect handling of multipage TIFF.

Clicking on a TIFF image *under Ubuntu* will open EOG not EVINCE, so
normal users, not hacker, not only aren't able to see all page of TIFF
but also doesn't get informed in any way that this image have more than
one page :(

And how this normal user will find that EVINCE is the right application for
open multi TIFF images?
Guessing?

I think that Ubuntu have to associate EVINCE as default viewer for TIFF images.
And also I think that this bug should be reopened.

Bye.

[Bug 695260] Re: gnome-panel help cannot be displayed

2011-01-15 Thread Joanmarie
Thanks Eliah. It was a somewhat rhetorical question, really. Help is
borked.

I know jack about gio. However, whilst poking into this a tad I noticed
the following:

  gio.app_info_get_default_for_uri_scheme() returns None for 'ghelp'.

Related aside: as a check to see if I was using this method correctly, I
tried to get the uri_scheme for 'http'. The following was returned:
default for 'http' gio.unix.DesktopAppInfo at 0x9c73cfc: Firefox 4.0
Beta 9 Web Browser I wonder if this explains why, even though my
session default browser is Chrome, Evolution insists on launching
Firefox. But I digress

gio does seem to know about yelp:

gio.unix.DesktopAppInfo at 0x9ae68ec: Help, executable: yelp,
supports_uris: False

Odd that it doesn't support URIs

Normally I don't change Summaries on other people's bugs, or downstream
bugs. Pardon my making the exception in this case.

2011-01-15 Thread Eliah Kagan
I have no objection to your improving the summary line in this bug.
However, are you sure the problem with help in those other applications
is really the same as the problem I experienced? When I attempted to
open Panel Help from the GNOME Panel, I got this error message:

Could not display help document 'user-guide'
The specified location is not supported

Is that exactly the same error message that you get, when you attempt
the same thing.

This issue would be much easier if I still had that Natty system.
Hopefully it will suffer from this problem when I reinstall it. ;-)

2011-01-15 Thread Joanmarie
I'd bet money on it being the same issue. ;-)

In terms of gnome-orca: I'm the co-maintainer. We've not changed
anything w.r.t. how help is launched. And yet suddenly, in Natty, I get
the same error you do for gnome-panel. And I get that same issue for
other gnome apps. Add to the list:

* gcalctool
* aisleriot solitaire
* shotwell
* epiphany
* [...]

In every last case, it's The specified location is not supported. The
exception type happens to be gio.Error, but in a dialog box (as opposed
to a traceback), you don't see the gio.Error.

Adding 'yelp' as also being impacted. I'm not convinced the bug is in
'yelp' per se. In fact, I'd guess it's not. But if this bug sits around
in 'gnome-panel' (which is deprecated upstream), no one is going to
notice it.

Apologies to the downstream yelp guy. And thanks in advance for
redirecting it to where it really belongs. ;-)

It'll close the second window (underneath the first window) even though
the first is focussed.

If you substitute sylpheed for example instead of first terminal window,
same happens, in that the second terminal window is closed. It seems
that when alt+tabbing between applications, focus is not always
fully/correctly switched in a gnome desktop environment.

[Bug 577545] Re: gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 on log in

2011-01-15 Thread Matthew Sheffield
I had this problem with only the status 256 error being displayed. After
trying everything suggested in every forum I just ended up reinstalling Ubuntu
10.04 and now it works fine.
I think the best first step is to try and reinstall Linux and maybe do
something different during setup. (For instance I was running a dual boot and
this time I manually partitioned the drive instead of letting the disc auto
partition. And I also used a different password.) If the problem still
persists I suggest you try the other suggestions floating out there like the
chmod thing. Also FYI, terminal can be reached by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 at
login screen.

[Bug 663014] Re: No result for ping in Gnome-Nettool

2011-01-15 Thread sonicsteve
Same problem here,

I have thread in the forums about this also.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10362988#post10362988

I would love to find a work around for this other than the terminal. I
like the saved ping history since I ping the same thing quite often in
my network support. Terminal works and is fine but I like the nettools I
hope they get this sorted soon.

[Bug 177929] Re: We need file encoding select function for zip files

2011-01-15 Thread Daniel U. Thibault
Charlie is mincing words to get around the problem of facing the issue.
The bug is valid, because xarchiver is NOT unzipping the contents of the
archive: it is copying its contents to seemingly randomly-named other
files. The original zipped files are NOT recovered: you get other-named
files with the same content. This is untenable when unzipping a
hierarchy of files and folders, or just multiple files: how is the user
going to match the weird output with his expectation? He can't.

[Bug 177929] Re: We need file encoding select function for zip files

Definitely not invalid, inasmuch as the original (Unicode-named) files
are NOT recreated by xarchiver.

[Bug 577545] Re: gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 on log in

2011-01-15 Thread Garry Leach
I had this problem in 10.04 (see post #13, plus a locked-PC problem).

I did a fresh install to 10.10 in November. I no longer have the
locked-PC problem, but I still get status 256. It's not a serious
problem, just irritating.

However, just recently, I made a USB-stick copy of 10.10, just so that
my sister could run Gramps on her MS Windows PC.

When I want to boot up using the memory stick, I need to adjust the boot
sequence in BIOS.

When I remove the stick, then boot to my normal desktop, I don't need to
go into BIOS, because it knows that there is no memory stick. - BUT- I
then don't get the status 256 message.

Does that give any expert a different perspective on the cause of the
problem?

Regards, Garry.
