[Bug 724324] Re: FFE: Add support to g-p-m for controlling keyboard backlight via upower in natty

2011-02-27 Thread Martin Pitt
This looks fine to me at this point; accepted upstream, it is a "leaf"
feature with no dependencies, and in the worst case we can back it out
if there are troubles. Approved.

[Bug 726376] [NEW] Cannot create a WebDAV address book

2011-02-27 Thread Jeremy Malcolm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have tried to add a WebDAV address book. The URL I specify is that of
a WebDAV directory that is either empty, or else contains one or more
vcard files - it makes no difference. In either case I get a message
"Loading Addressbook summary" in the status bar, but no progress. If I
try to add a new address to the new address book, I get "Error adding
contact - Other error". There are no funny characters in my URL or
username. When I check the logs of the WebDAV server, there is never
any attempt to access them. The same WebDAV server is accessible
through Nautilus. I do not have a proxy set.

2011-02-27 Thread David Ayers
This was originally reported upstream as:

Upstream marked it as a duplicate of a fixed bug without testing/reporting
whether this specific scenario was also fixed, so I'm documenting the old
report here in case it needs to be reopened.

Public bug reported:

Totem Movie Player 2.32.0 running with Ubuntu 10.10 does not show visual

contain a cd "cover" image - visuals look fine. But when image is
included, I see the image... I don't seem to have anyway to enable
visual effects.

[Bug 666185] Re: {tar.gz archive produced by file-roller} is not correctly opened with winrar - non-latin letters in filenames are not correct

2011-02-27 Thread Mechanical snail
I presume Winrar uses the same (nonstandard) filename encoding for both
input and output. So it can read its own files, but doesn't interoperate
with anything else.

Try opening a Winrar-created tarball in 7-zip on Windows. If 7-zip opens
it, please reopen this bug. (I only tested it on Wine.)

[Bug 724324] Re: FFE: Add support to g-p-m for controlling keyboard backlight via upower in natty

2011-02-27 Thread Alex Murray
Have just finished successfully building and testing the patch in Natty
(see description for link to build log). Any update on the FFE? Any more
info required?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The version of upower (0.9.8) in Natty now has support for controlling
keyboard backlights via dbus, and upstream g-p-m git HEAD (soon to be
released 3.0 for GNOME 3) just added support for controlling these,
however the version of g-p-m shipped in Natty (2.32) does not have any
  such support.

Keyboard backlight support was previously available via HAL in Hardy but
was then removed when the dehalsification started and no such support
has been available since, and as such adding support to g-p-m in Natty
is (and has been for a while) greatly needed.

I have written a patch against g-p-m 2.32 which provides such support
and is similar to the support recently added to g-p-m 3.0.

This patch adds a new GpmBacklightKbd object to g-p-m (which is based on
the existing GpmBacklight object which controls the LCD backlight) to
control the UPower KbdBacklight DBus interface and the patch provides
  support for:

  * controlling the backlight via the appropriate backlight up / down buttons
  * automatically dimming the backlight on idle when the lcd is dimmed
  * automatically shutting of the keyboard backlight when the lcd is shut off
  * displaying the keyboard brightness level via notify-osd (like we do for lcd
backlight level) when changed by the user

I have tested this patch significantly myself over numerous days with no
issues. After a quick post on the ubuntuforums
  (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694678) at least one other
user has also confirmed this patch as working well and providing a
reasonable improvement over current sub-optimum methods of controlling
the keyboard backlight (such as using pommed, which is only available
for MacBook machines and does not support other laptops with keyboard
backlights such as various Asus models, which the upower + g-p-m method
  does).

I am requesting a FFE to merge the attached patch into g-p-m in Natty to
  provide such support.

- A build log for g-p-m 2.32 in Maverick using the attached patch is
- available my ppa (amd64 version
- https://launchpad.net/~alexmurray/+archive/ppa/+buildjob/2283751/+files
- /buildlog_ubuntu-maverick-amd64.gnome-power-
- manager_2.32.0-0ubuntu2_BUILDING.txt.gz).
-
- I am currently installing a natty daily vm to test building of the Natty
- version of g-p-m 2.32 with this patch, but due to the almost identical
- nature of g-p-m in Natty and Maverick I do not expect any problems.
+ A build log for g-p-m 2.32 in Natty using the attached patch is
+ available my ppa (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/65256989
+ /buildlog_ubuntu-natty-i386.gnome-power-
+ manager_2.32.0-2ubuntu2_BUILDING.txt.gz).

[Bug 625670] Re: Not all desktop items are themed

2011-02-27 Thread dualityim
I was also experiencing the problem. Looking at the workaround that
involves killing gnome-settings-daemon, I guessed that it's being caused
by the instance of gnome-settings-daemon that was run with gdm's gconf
settings not shutting down properly before another instance of it was
run with the user's gconf settings. So I added the line "killall -9
gnome-settings-daemon" to /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default to make sure gnome-
settings-daemon is killed when the user logs in, and this seems to have
resulted in the desired behavior: the user's theme is applied correctly
after logout and login, and gdm doesn't lose its own theme.

[Bug 504645] Re: Brasero won't accept FLAC files for audio disc project

2011-02-27 Thread ricardisimo
I'm having the same problem:

>>"Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac" could not be opened.
>>"Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac" is not suitable for audio or
>>video media.

And I click OK, and the second song on the mix - also flac - says the
same thing. I've read through several threads and installed all of the
codecs and libraries mentioned in all of them. No change.

I'm on 10.10, fully updated. K3b does the job perfectly. I'm saving the
playlist to m3u in rhythmbox, then opening that m3u with k3b, and voila.
Still, it should not be an issue, certainly not on a Linux system with
open formats. Bizarre.

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format

2011-02-27 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
In reply to comment #25
> This is for VLC's convert wizard. The default preset should be WebM instead
> of a proprietary format

>From Wikipedia: "In telecommunications, a proprietary protocol is a
communications protocol owned by a single organization or individual."

WebM is fully controlled by Google, and hence proprietary.

The VLC default video codec is H.264, an international standard (ISO/IEC
14496-10 - MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding). That does not fit my
definition of "proprietary". You can get the specification for free
there http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.264 . There are also top-notch
open-source implementations, FFmpeg/lavc for decoding, x264 for
encoding.

I guess you meant "patent-encumbered" rather than "proprietary". The
VideoLAN projec operates under EU legislation which does not recognize
software patent. If you live somewhere else, please don't make it the
VLC media player developer's problem. Back to invalid state.

Re: [Bug 725189] Re: OpenWith/OtherApp does not 'remember' the selected app

2011-02-27 Thread teledyn
thanks for the clarification and probe tips. permissions on mimeapps.list
seem fine:

$ ls -al ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 garym garym 2103 2011-02-26 11:34
/home/garym/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

the contents are attached (I'm replying by email, and curious to see if
attachments work this way)

[Bug 726100] [NEW] cannot login after upgrade 10.4 to 10.10

2011-02-27 Thread gratefulfrog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I am running amd64, the real time kernel.
Since the update from 10.4 to 10.10 I cannot login as normal, since my password
seems to be unrecognized in the graphic boot account selection screed.
I must use the grub menu to select the recovery mode kernel, then resume boot
and login at the command line prompt then startx.
The password works at the command line.
I tried to report this bug a month ago but couldn't get to the system to make
the report.
If I try to select the latest generic kernel, I get a cryptdisk error and then
the boot loops.
I am available to try to help to work on this, it is very painful.
Please advise if you think a clean install of 10.10 would solve the issues.
Thanks,
Bob.
