[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-05-12 Thread Ivan Mikushin
After a recent system update gnome-settings-daemon crashes with segmentation
fault upon login to gnome shell (installed from ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3,
gnome-settings-daemon 3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build4). The #68 comment hack makes it
even worse: the session hangs (nevertheless, it did the trick under with
vanilla ubuntu-10.10: I was affected until upgraded to Natty + Gnome3, have
SSD, Core i7).
Before the update everything worked just fine (gnome-settings-daemon
3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build3.1).

From syslog:

[Bug 769314] Re: System bell broken in Natty/Unity (despite heroic...)

2011-05-12 Thread Luke Yelavich
The problem is that compiz does not have anything that talks to
libcanberra to play a sound event. The solution here is to write a
compiz plugin that listens for the system bell event, and calls
libcanberra. I intend to try to put a plugin together in the near
future, but if someone beats me to it, I won't be bothered.

In a default natty install, the system bell should work in metacity
without issue, i.e a system bell is triggered, and metacity calls
libcanberra functions to play the system bell sound event.

[Bug 727660] Re: The panel encountered a problem while loading... on a live session

2011-05-12 Thread László Monda
Sorry for stating marking the duplicates before - I've just noticed
that it's automatically taken care by Launchpad.

I read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEApplets but I don't have a
clue how to debug this one because it clearly seems a race condition as
others have suggested.

By the way, in my situation this has happened with the User Switch
Applet, with the Multiload Applet, and with the Window List applet.
It's not deterministic and happens once in a while, about every fourth
time upon session startup. This clearly doesn't seem to be applet-
specific but rather more general purpose, related to the GNOME panel
applet framework / architecture.

[Bug 781572] [NEW] Cannot trash or restore file if filename very long

2011-05-12 Thread Pan Yongzhi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I find nautilus cannot trash a file if its filename is longer than 245 chars,
since nautilus create trashinfo file in the form filename.trashinfo under
$HOME/.local/share/Trash/info, which adds 10 bytes to the info file.

Also, if a filename is longer than 238 chars, the file can be deleted but
cannot be restored. This is because the trashinfo file is created but empty. I
do not find the reason for this, even after a look at the nautilus code.

I use GNOME nautilus 2.32.2.1.

I've upgraded to maverick, and that for the above reasons, and also
because the old version of gcalctool reads from the numeric keypad
without you having to have numlock on, have downgraded to the lucid
version as described above.

For anyone else who has done (or is doing this) I've found that, after
installation, running

echo gcalctool hold | dpkg --set-selections

as root solves the problem of automatic updates trying to re-'upgrade'
it back to the more modern, but less functional version.

Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. There has
been an upgrade of telepathy-gabble since this release and it would be
great if you could test this and let us know if this is still an issue.
if it is, please copy logs into this bug from the telepathy-gabble log

it's still an issue please let us know what version you are using
exactly and a few steps to reproduce this issue on our end.

[Bug 781648] [NEW] xchat-gnome.desktop is not removed after purging package

2011-05-12 Thread Kamus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

I used to work with xchat-gnome but after install libgtk3 something goes
wrong and never starts again so I decided to remove and purge this
package, however, I noticed that after removing xchat-gnome the file
located at /usr/share/applications/xchat-gnome.desktop was not removed
so if you try find xchar or irc in the launcher you will find an entry
that obviosly doesn't work because the program not exists any more.

[Bug 781391] [NEW] evolution run on a remote machine crashes

2011-05-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've reported this to the evolution folks
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649757) but they say that it's not
their fault. Basically I open a remote terminal from my ubuntu box on a remote
server (various slackware 12.2/13.0 boxes) and run
evolution on the server from the command line. The application crashes (see
the bugzilla.gnome.org) for a backtrace.

This only started happening after I upgraded to 11.04 from 10.04. I t
worked `100% of the time and now fails 100% of the time.

The remote machines are all running git/master versions of Xorg.
See the url above for a backtrace.

I also confirms that creating this soft link gets this error sorted. I
got this error immediately after upgrading to the Natty today.

Thanks for updating with this with the useful info.

[Bug 256749] Re: Unable to mount location -- Internal error: No mount object for mounted volume

2011-05-12 Thread matthew72
i also tried to mount the device (a luks encrypted one this time), this
is the result:

$ gvfs-mount -d /dev/sda5
Enter a password to unlock the volume
The device 320 GB Hard Disk contains encrypted data on partition 5.
Password:

(gvfs-mount:5120): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_mount_get_root: assertion
`G_IS_MOUNT (mount)' failed

(gvfs-mount:5120): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_get_path: assertion `G_IS_FILE
(file)' failed
Mounted /dev/sda5 at (null)

(gvfs-mount:5120): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(gvfs-mount:5120): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

an icon appeared in the gnome-panel saying a device was added, but
strangely it didn't create the desktop icon (not that i care much, but
gvfs-mounting an smb share instead gives the desktop icon but not the
notification in gnome-panel, and the same happens if i mount the
partition in nautilus). the mountpoint was created anyway, and the mount
was successful, so gvfs-mount -d seems to be a viable workaround. too
bad gvfs-mount --list doesn't say the device; is there a reliable way to
get the device node (i mean /dev/whatever) from its name?

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2011-05-12 Thread Patrick Stewart
I have updated to 11.04 few days ago and was quite surprised to lose my
session. Even when I switched to Ubuntu Classic I would still lose my
session. So I googled and found this discussion.

To be frank I find developers' reasoning to be flawed and to a certain
extent disturbing. Session saving might not have worked for some
applications but it did work for many others and since it was present in
Ubuntu for few years (I think) many people were relying on it. Disabling
it seems like display of disregard towards users, but I can understand
that sometimes decisions like that have to be made. What I don't
understand is why was this removed even as an option? You know for
people who decide to enable it. You basically removed it as a choice
which seems totally unreasonable.

Proposition to use suspend/hibernate for session saving sounds like a
cruel joke, for two reasons. Firstly, those features themselves are
unreliable and slow. (Talk about broken features that have side
effects.) Secondly, Ubuntu doesn't support rebootless kernel update, so
suspend/hibernate hardly help in situations when you need to update your
kernel, but even if it did they you still need to shutdown your computer
once in a while.

I have switched to Xfce for now and session saving works there just
fine.

[Bug 780497] Re: Laptop won't suspend when closed

2011-05-12 Thread David Conner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-power-manager.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Could you please run apport-collect 780497 from the terminal? You might also
want to take a look at the debugging instructions located at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager and submit any other logs
related to your problem. Thanks in advance.

Wow that is terrible. This configuration option should be in /etc and

Re: [Bug 780497] Re: Laptop won't suspend when closed

2011-05-12 Thread Jim Chatman
At some point in the, likely, far distant future, I may have time to do
that. In the short run, it would be MORE convenient for the great many of us
who beta test this system to have one comprehensive and simple bug reporting
system. It's highly likely that if you did you would get timely, complete,
and accurate reporting. While I do realize that those who work to build
Ubuntu are volunteers, you must remember that those of us who test it are,
too. And unlike you, many of us have only cursory experience with these
matters. To that end, it would seem that a team might consider my
aforementioned proposal.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-power-manager.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
 functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Could you please run apport-collect 780497 from the terminal? You might
also want to take a look at the debugging instructions located at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager and submit any other
logs related to your problem. Thanks in advance.

  Laptop won't suspend when closed

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

 Bug description:
My laptop will not suspend when closed unless I suspend it manually
once. After that, and until the next shutdown, it will suspend every
time when I close the lid. Also, when I manually suspend the laptop,
upon reopening it I get a login screen. The login screen doesn't
appear when the lid is just closed to suspend.

[Bug 781851] [NEW] evolution 2.32.2 no longer allows changing keyboard shortcuts

2011-05-12 Thread Geoff Mulligan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In previous versions of evolution you were able to modify the keyboard
shortcuts by editing the evolution-mail-message.xml file. This file does
not exist and the keyboard accel mappings do not seem to be available in
any file.

The help page (faq) for evolution still suggests making changes to the
old file.

Please bring back the capability to change the keyboard shortcuts.

LightDM will replace GMD in Oneiric so that is that. GNOME 3 has a new
layout that isn't affected by this bug. Case closed. Well played
