2011-06-08 Thread Zero
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 649809 ***

This seems to be related since symptoms are exactly the same:

There seems to be a way to workaround the issue stated un the page
bellow and also this seem to be related to this bug report in
particular:

2011-06-08 Thread Bob Elenothar
i can confirm this problem in the latest vmware fusion. livecd is fine,
login looks great, seconds later the theme crashes and im on ugly
square.

this does not happen if i kill gdm and startx as my user. only happens
if i log in via gdm. (which always seems plauged, eh?)

2011-06-08 Thread Heiner Valverde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When using Empathy today, I don't know what happen but it stopped
showing the menu in the panel at the top of the Unity DE but the
interesting thing is that you get the menus from the conversation
windows.

I quit it by using the System Monitor and then I reopened it and for a
moment the menus reappeared. Any help will be appreaciated.

[Bug 794768] [NEW] Greeter displays password expiry message, then vanishes

2011-06-08 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have password aging enabled, and it's getting close to password change
time. When I login, the greeter displays the " Warning: your password
will expire in 6 days" message, then vanishes before I can read the
message. It should persist for a few seconds so I can read the message
(if any message has been posted).

[Bug 37777] Re: very uncomfortable browsing

2011-06-08 Thread Devius
This seems to be fixed in the latest 2.13.1 gThumb as found in the Natty
repositories, at least as far as I can understand what the original bug
report refers to. Also I don't think it's the same as what the gnome
bugzilla #302704 bug is referring to. That seems to be asking for image
previews in the folders icons themselves.

[Bug 772486] Re: [Natty] Unity will start from GDM, not from KDM

2011-06-08 Thread Donald Thompson
I did some more playing around with this and I found my GDMSESSION
variable is set to "default". If I add:

export GDMSESSION="$DESKTOP_SESSION"

if [ "$GDMSESSION" = "default" ] ; then
export GDMSESSION=gnome
fi

then Unity will start correctly. It doesn't seem to cause any problems if the
session type is changed prior to login either.
I'm not sure why just 'export GDMSESSION="$DESKTOP_SESSION"' doesn't work for
me, but I've tested this over several 11.04 x86_64 installs now using a clean
(no data/config in the $HOME directory) account.

[Bug 340211] Re: Screen too big for 1024*600 résolution ! Button no Acces

2011-06-08 Thread Devius
This is still an issue with the latest 11.04 version. Here's a
screenshot showing the problem. It could all be solved by scrollbars. As
it is there's just too much blank space in the dialog and it's not
possible to size it down what makes it unusable on 600px vertical
resolution displays.

Note that "compiz --replace" does not "fix" the other issue with gnome-

Actually, you can add compiz --replace to your Startup Applications and
not have to think about this bug until it gets fixed. That's a trick I
had to use in past releases, and it still works today. I can drag and
drop in Ubuntu 11.04 Classic Desktop without a second thought -- and it
was one of the things that was holding me back, because I use that
feature quite a bit.

Go to:

System > Preferences > Startup Applications

Click on Add

In the dialog box that pops up,
 ?field.comment=Actually, you can add compiz --replace to your Startup

[Bug 708382] Re: cannot create "custom" preferred applications

It's really annoying when you have to get into the whole google-forum-
bug_report circle just to get a thing working which used to work just
fine until a new release came out and blew it at the expense at some new
fancy irrelevant modification.

[Bug 794687] [NEW] GDM user list blank on first start

2011-06-08 Thread 3vi1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

On my fastest system (i980x booting from SSD), the GDM user list alway
comes up blank after a machine restart. By 'blank', I mean that 'Other'
is the only user in the list.

If I ctrl-alt-1 out to a terminal session and restart the gdm service,
the list comes up properly. I'm not sure what GDM does in the
background to retrieve the user list, but it certainly feels as if it's
running into a race condition with some other process - and is trying to
retrieve the user list before that process is available.

I don't believe this problem was present on the same machine in Natty,
but it's been a while since I used GDM regularly (Neither KDM nor
LightDM seem to suffer the same problem on the same machine).

I know we're switching to LightDM, but it's got a few problems
/unsupported-features right now so some people may be using GDM for a
while.

Also, sporadically it causes the kernel to panic (I suspect). Computer

flashes forever. Battery/plug pull is needed.

[Bug 783735] [NEW] "save" dialog box not functional

2011-06-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've been using ubuntu since 10.04. this problem seems to be in 11.04 as
well.

1. save file
2. type in name of filename to use
3. after several characters, if any existing files match these letter, the
entry field is replaced by the existing file name.
4. addition entry of characters is not possible

e.g.

1. i want to save the file as "mydocument details"

2. if a file called "mydocustuff" exists, after typeing "myd", the
filename entry field is replaced by "mydocustuff". any attempt to
continue entering the rest of the filename in 1. is prohibited.

i have to manually clear the filename field and re-enter the filename.

this is extremely irritating and non productive.

i would suggest that automatic "false" complete of the filename be
eliminated when saving files.

[Bug 794682] [NEW] Default save location is not helpful.

2011-06-08 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I deleted my ~/Documents folder. This is where gedit usually defaults to
save items, right? (going on this assumption)

Well, since it's not there, gedit defaults to use "Filesystem".

This is not helpful at all.

I believe it should default to the home directory (~/) if it cannot find
the default location. If the home directory does not exist...then who is
running the program!...it should then move to "Filesystem".

[Bug 669572] Re: Gtk apps are crashing due to missing icons

2011-06-08 Thread Jonathan Thomas
Oxygen is not related. Even with the default GTK+ theme Raleigh, if a
program tries to load an icon that is not in either the current theme or
the fallback theme, it won't be able to load it. (Catfish is a good
example)

Programs suffering from this bug need to use a spec-approved icon name
common to all icon themes, or the icon will not appear in the program.
For example, if Catfish tried to load the "dialog-information" icon
rather than the "gtk-info" icon only found in the Humanity icon theme,
Catfish would work with all spec-compliant icon themes.

It has probably not been removed at all. Just restart the users and
groups tool, and check that it's still present. Else, that's a bug in
the users menu.

Seems I spoke too soon, I'm now unable to reproduce it. Regardless,
after some discussion - this should be a compiz issue rather than
nautilus, unless you can say that it always happens with nautilus and
never with any other application.

Hi Veger,

Thank you for check. Now it is working better.
I still have this issue time to time (once per couple of days) but I didn't
find how to stably reproduce it.
When it happens I can create new task by pressing buttons NEW>Task.
Anyway Close and reopen Evolution resolve problem.

If I will find how to reproduce it I will report it

[Bug 792735] Re: Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG

2011-06-08 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This is a tricky one, since I'm not able to reproduce the behavior you
describe.

I altered my settings to get exactly the same 'locale' output as you:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=zh_CN:en_US:en
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES=zh_CN.UTF-8
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Given that, I can start Firefox in English using:

env LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8 firefox

and I can start gedit in English using:

env LANGUAGE=en gedit

If that still does not work for you, could you please try:

unset LC_MESSAGES; firefox

and

unset LANGUAGE; LANGUAGE=en; gedit

I explained in bug 553162 why changing LANG may not be sufficient in
Natty. To get a more complete description of how languages and locales
are dealt with in Natty, you may want to read the new help document,
which you can access by clicking the "Help" button in Language Support.

As regards language labels on the login screen, they are displayed in
the system language. If you see them in English, there is probably a
line in your /etc/default/locale file that looks something like:

LANGUAGE="en_US:en"

In any case I can't see how it would be related to the problem in this
bug report.

[Bug 793342] Re: Choosing write to disc causes Nautilus to restart

2011-06-08 Thread Brendan Donegan
OK, thanks for the info - just need a bit more.

I suppose it's a blank one that's in the drive? I'm only saying that
because I only have e.g. movie DVD's with me at the moment, so can't
check with a blank disc.

Probably you need to wait for someone to come along with a blank DVD and
using a 64-bit build to be sure. For now I'll set it to 'New' since I
can't reproduce it myself, but don't doubt you are having a problem.
