I have the same issue. At random (I would say about one third of the time), some users do not appear, and they are not always the same ones. It doesn't seem to be a pattern. Note that Im not sure how or when this this post was originally responded to besides, but this bug was from a while back as out can see as I was using the Karmic Beta at the time. Anyhow, I do not and will not use Natty or any version of Unity/Gnome Shell. Though I just tested out 2.28 version of netstatus and the wifi strength bar connectivity signal bar is back and much much more accurate. Although, since it's been 2 yrs I have a new laptop, so It's not exactly a 1-for-1 comparison any longer.
