[Bug 812394] Re: Disable suspend/hibernate options when they are not supported
Indeed, I see absolutely no reason to disable suspend on unknown machines. It works on the vast majority of hardware out there, and if it doesn't, then you'll learn to "just don't do that" on that particular machine. But it seems wrong to arbitrarily and unnecessarily break such an important functionality. Disabling it on known-broken machines indeed seems to be a better way to go, although it'd be even better to actually fix it on these machines :) For many older machines we can apply quirks in pm-utils. Such a blacklist would be most suitable to maintain in pm-utils, from where upower will pick it up through pm-is-supported reporting False for the respective operation (suspend/hibernate). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/812394 Title: Disable suspend/hibernate options when they are not supported To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/812394/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Followings are known differences that a non-technical like me can analyse. 1. While OS version is the same but a 64bit version was installed on DELL while a 32bit was on ACER. All software on both computers are updated to the latest patches. 2. Apart from Ubuntu, there is a partition of Windows XP on ACER but DELL relies purely on Ubuntu. 3. Both computers run the same version of file-roller. 4. ACER has unrar 1:3.9.3-1 (non-free) installed while DELL has unrar-free 1:0.0.1+cvs20071127-1 installed but was already removed and replaced by the same version as ACER. 5. Both computers have msttcorefonts installed. Please tell me how to get it if you want more technical information. I sent this issue to the bugmaster of bugzilla.gnome.org but they suggested me to find the bug fixs on the website. There is one bug report, Bug 629202, seems to be similar to mine but providing no solution except suggestion to send the bug to Launchpad. That's why I'm here. Thanks for attention. [Bug 809903] [NEW] Power Management settings - 2nd hard drive never powers down
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Ubuntu's Power Management does not power off the hard drive unless you edit a file manually. Having cleanly installed Ubuntu on my old (desktop) computer for a friend, the 2nd hard drive never powers off - despite going into the Power Management settings and ticking the option "Spin down hard disks when possible". There are 2 actual hard drives in the case; there's no confusion with partitions appearing as separate hard drives. One hard drive is IDE and the other is SATA. The only way I could get the 2nd hard drive to switch off was to edit /etc/hdparm.conf and uncomment (remove the hash "#") from the line in that file which has the number 24 at the end (only one line had the number 24 at the end of it). Making that change in /etc/hdparm.conf - then saving that file and rebooting - definitely worked as when you access the 2nd drive after a few minutes, you hear it power on - you can clearly hear the sound of it powering on and then you can see the files on that drive. It also powers off again if left idle - which proves changing that file works, but the power saving option GUI does not work. I had previously reported this bug and I remember being told there was an update to one of the files (hdparm.conf I think?), but that bug report was closed. Please reconsider this bug report as it pertains to the Power Management setting GUI not powering off the hard drive(s) when the user ticks the box "Spin down hard disks when possible". ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Power Management settings - 2nd hard drive never powers down https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/809903 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 810907] Re: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings
1. Group management and groups membership A newly created user is only member of its own group $ id test02 uid=1003(test02) gid=1003(test02) groups=1003(test02) John, a not so powerful adminof his home sytem, wants to access his modem or fax for example? Or any other devices based on group membership. John wants to create a shared directory on his system for Photos, Videos and Musics and only members of group 'personalmedia' have write access to it. He needs to be able to create the group in the first place. 2. Support for profile ? There is a profile 'administrator' which actually adds the user to a useless group 'admin'. The legacy admin account being 'adm' How does the sysadmin adds custom profiles ? 3. Home directory John wants to store additional accounts on an additional disc mounted on /data/users. So he wants users already created to stay on /home and new users created on /data/users 4. Shell By default the shell is /bin/dash, John really likes his customized prompt, command history and command completion. So he wants bash 5. User Id John used dejadup to restore home directories from his broken home desktop to a shiny new system and he wants to recreate the users with to match with his poor broken system. He has a powerful graphical one-click solution to restore nearly everything and must recreate all the users from the command line. :( That's just a few examples that comes to mind, the most important being the lack of group management. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/810907 Title: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/810907/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 812530] [NEW] Unity Launcher does not work over Remote Desktop Viewer
Public bug reported: When viewing one Ubuntu 11.04 desktop from another computer with Ubuntu 11.04 using Vinagre, the Unity launcher does not appear on mouseover (the default behavior is to withdraw the launcher into the left side of the screen when a window is blocking the space it occupies when open). The launcher works well when operated locally, so there seems to be something wrong with the way Vinagre sends the mouse position: the launcher begins to appear when the mouse moves to the left-hand side, but gets stuck in the beginning of the fade-in. [Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space
I just came across this bug report after finally tracking down my own disk space issues to .xsession-errors.old. The file had grown to over 13 GB! Obviously, most users are not affected by this bug, so it seems to be triggered by excessive error reporting somewhere else. In my case, the most common error is this, repeated over and over and over: (gnome-power-manager:2073): Gtk-WARNING **: A floating object was finalized. This means that someone called g_object_unref() on an object that had only a floating reference; the initial floating reference is not owned by anyone and must be removed with g_object_ref_sink(). I understand that's not really helpful for tracking down the source of the error, but the redundancy of the errors got me thinking. At least on my system (10.10, 64-bit), old errors are occasionally moved from .xsession-errors to .xsession-errors.old, and the latter file is the one that soaks up all the disk space. Others have suggested modifying the code to prune the logs occasionally. That should eliminate the problem entirely, but it hasn't been done. If there's a reason that cannot be done, maybe the error redundancy could be exploited using compression? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60448 Title: .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/60448/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 812433] Re: evolution does not receive or send mail
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug. There is also a vibrant support community available at http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there. ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Converted to question: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+question/165233 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/812433 Title: evolution does not receive or send mail To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/812433/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
